That is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. No unnecessary pre-talk. Every stitch worked completely in view. Great hints about the use of markers. Showed what to do to complete after kichnering, etc which many tutorials leave hanging. Thank you for the obvious prep before releasing this. Super, super, helpful and excellent.
I did knit a pair of tube socks. Sometimes- I wish I had the guts to cut into it and add heels. IDK if I can do this. Cutting it has to be so scary. That snip sound just went right through me!
I learned to knit socks with heel flap and gusset from you and have made 5 pair. I recently decided to try the afterthought heels and knew I’d find you had a video. Maybe one day I’ll try magic loop. So far 2-9” circulars is my go to. Have a blessed day. Thanks for being amazing.
Best afterthought tutorial I've seen so far. I knitted a 4 inch tube to test this heel. Following your instructions, everything turned out perfectly. I can't wait to cast on for an actual pair of socks. I didn't have a circular needle in the right size but I used the Addi FlexiFlip needles and they worked just as well. You're a great teacher, and your instructions are so easy to follow. Your tips about the Kitchener Stitch fixed the dog ear problem I was having. Thanks
This video gave me the confidence to try a true afterthought heel and I love that there are no gaps!! Thank you so much for the clear tutorial. Love it!
Thank you for being the crazy sock Nader because I am in love with crazy socks. I was seeking to find someone who would show us how to knit. Crazy socks in crazy colors. I thank you because I am very eclectic. If only I could find someone who freehand , crochet crazy socks. But I am happy to find you.
Another great tutorial!! I’ve used your tutorial for magic loop recently (heel, heel turn and gusset style) - made my first 3 pairs of socks ever and I’ve been knitting for over 40 years. They turned out perfectly with your excellent instructions and tips. I am wearing the first pair and gifted the second 2. The recipients loved them!! Your afterthought heel tutorial looks pretty straight forward - I can’t wait to cast on my next pair. Just a note - I have always been an English style knitter - I also learned how to Continental Knit which makes knitting socks that much easier. Thanks so much for your help. You’ve made knitting socks fun for me :) - and my knitting friends and family with whom I’ve shared your videos. Hope you are having a lovely Thanksgiving.
Wow! Cutting the yarn IS scary. Thank you for the complete explanation. I hope to try this soon. Also, having recently found you on RUclips☺, I have so much enjoyed your videos although I am late to your channel.
Kay, thank you for another wonderful tutorial. I did my first afterthought heel several years ago using the KirbyWirby video. Your way of placing three pins all on the same row makes so much sense. Figuring out where to place the heel and toe are where I get stuck sometimes. I now know I can get out my sock ruler and re-watch that portion of your video. Thank you for being so clear and thorough.
You are an excellent coach and teacher. My fears are cutting my work and having holes but I'm motivated and confident I can do this now. Thank You Yoda!
I'm working on my second pair of socks since Christmas! Thank you so much for your terrific tutorials. I'm having so much fun! Jackie in Pennsylvania 😊
Your videos are so helpful! Your reassurance has helped me make the jump and just try it. Now I knit socks all the time! I can’t wait to try this on my next pair.
You are an amazing teacher and love how you do the step by step picking up if stitches to really help the novice know exactly what we need to do. ❤ I just subscribed so I don’t miss any videos.
Thanks for doing this very clear video. I learned a few tips even though I have been using this method for several years. I usually do toe up as I find it easier to cast on 8 stitches using Turkish cast on instead of casting on 64 for cuff down socks. I always do 7 rounds of plain knitting before doing my heel decreases. It is definitely my favorite heel. Keep the tutorials coming and stay safe and well. 💕
you are adorable, fabulous at doing tutorials and very savvy about how to do a podcast. Love the direct contact with you looking at the camera and just love this. Andddddddddddddddd..giving the time stamps is wonderful and so generous.
I have been doing Kirby Wirby’s afterthought heel for several years, but your idea to put 3 markers is great! I’m doing that now. Thanks for sharing. 💕
I’ve watched a lot of videos, I’ve bought knitting classes & you’re video is one of the best. Because you show every step, it’s so much easier when you’re not sure what you’re doing. Very clear. Well done, thank you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Kay! I’ve been needing to add some true afterthought heels to some socks for ages and this tutorial makes it so clear! 🙌
Excellent video! Giving me confidence to try it! I need to remove a holey heel from the sock I made last year so I will try this technique to make a new heel!
Now that I have learned to knit socks I can't stop using the after thought heel method because it is sooooo easy to use when improvising your own sock and sometimes you don't even need a pattern
Wow!! Incredible Work!! I Thank You For This Tutorial., I Can Actually Understand It... From All The Other Tutorial... You Are The Best... Your Patient.,. In Explaining Step By Step... Thank You So Much... Thumbs Up.... 😁👍💯% Please...😊😀☝😁👍☺❤
Kay! Thank you so much!! Watched the whole tutorial and looks so uncomplicated!! I have a pair of socks that were gifted to me,,and need the after thought heel! I have been too scared to do it! I have the 32" needles ordered,,,,to try majic loop from UR tutorial ,,,andndndndnd now to do this! Excited,,,,hopefully I can follow along again and do it!!! Elaine🏡🏠🏡🏠🏘 Thanks!!!!
Very nice video. When I knit striped socks, I usually make the toe and heel a solid, contrasting color. But I must admit Ilike your bullseye technique. I'll have to try that. P.S. I also appreciate the grafting tip for eliminating the dog ears.
Excellent video Kay. I have steered clear as I never understood where to place the markers or how to measure. You made it so clear. If I'm not mistaken, you knit the number of rounds you like and then place the markers. After knitting socks for several years, I now realize they are all too large. I was taught on a US 3, have a wide foot and thick ankles. I think my teacher gave me US 3's as that's what the shop had. So I am off experimenting needle size, afterthought heels and counting rounds!
I've knit close to 100 pair of socks and all kinds of heels and toes but never an afterthought heel. Math is not my strong suit and you kind of lost me a bit in the lead up to the actual heel (but I THINK I got it). Your explanation for the heel is the best I think I've seen. I'm pretty sure I could do it now. The pin marks really make a lot of sense. Thank you sooo much!
Thanks so much for going in great detail showing the process with the markers, and for sharing your experience with kitchener methods re: dog ears. I always have this problem, so will try your technique next time. I really loved your Afterthought Everything video! It's geniusI never considered that method as an option, but it adresses all the things I love: when the process can be truly mindless in-between-knitting, and the design can be contrast cuffs, heel and toes while using up the full skein of sock yarn in between, without the mess of toe-up knitting. It is exactly what I'm looking for and I want to make it work. I do however have a large instep, and I know heel flaps fit better though I don't like the process or the look of them. I'm going to try your suggestion of starting the heel with extra plain knit rows, but I (think) I heard something about knitting the heel over up to 60% of the total number of stitches rather than half. Have you tried this or do you think this might address the instep issue? I would be grateful for any tips you have, since I just want to make the Afterthought Everything work for me. Love from Ireland, Nathalie.
Hi Kay I found your tutorial fascinating, I knitted my first baby jumper last year and so am hoping to be able to do socks by next year ,have a lot of crochet wips to catch up on ,thanks Kaye x
You honestly have the very best tutorials. I have watched so many while I learned to knit socks and if I'm trying to learn something new, I say a prayer that you have a tutorial available on what I'm trying to learn. Lol After our busy season passes, I'm going to try my first colorwork socks and will do an afterthought heel. If I normally add a couple rows to my heel flap for a deeper heel on your patterns that have a heel flap and gusset, should I make more than 4 rows of knit on my afterthought heel before beginning decreases? Thanks in advance!
Great tutorial. My problem is that I knit so tight, it’s super hard for me to pick up those stitches correctly. I tend to split the yarn a lot. I’ve been working on my tension, but was wondering if you had any thoughts on the best way for me to deal with this?
Completely serendipities that this comes out just as I need it! Amazing, going to be trying my first after thought heel this week 😬 But after watching this, I feel more confident about it. Although, I’m thinking you make it look easier than it is! Ha
I’m trying to follow the Kitchener stitch ending. The last stitch on each needle wasn’t done. The. Sock flipped about a bit but I don’t think you picked up those two stitches? How do they not unravel? And how does just bringing the yarn through to the inside fix the first stitches “dog ear” problem? I like your finished sock a lot, but need help understanding this part. Thank you
Thanks for this great video Kay. I've also used your magic loop tutorial and wondered if it's possible to knit a heel flap and gusset heel as an afterthought heel? I prefer the way they look and fit but I'm not too sure if it's possible. Thanks
Wonderful - following along on my super bulky (28 st around) super warm mohair socks - and I wondered if you have a hint for measuring socks so they fit? Thanks for all your good info!! Very interesting - very kind of you -
I've found this so helpful for mastering afterthought heels! One question - I often see this as a recommended heel for self striping yarns - do other heel styles necessarily mess up the striping? I'm starting a vanilla self striping sock right now and want to do contrasting cuff, heels, and toe in cream. Can't decide whether to just do the heel as an afterthought - which is probably easiest - or whether to try a different heel - which in the cream might be prettier than afterthought. Would a different heel necessarily be tricky to do with stripes?
Thank you so much for taking the time with all the explanations! Absolutely excellent! It's great to have this video to reference to, when I am ready to attempt the True Afterthought Heel!
You mention that you do 4 additional rounds of stockinette before starting the reduction rounds in the heel. Would this work with your typical Vanilla Sock pattern? A 64 stitch sock works okay for me, but it would be nice to have more room when trying to make it fit over my heel. Love your videos, Kay!
When you started making socks did you make those swatches and gauge your socks before starting? I'm a crocheter, but learning to knit socks too. Love your channel and beautiful socks!
You made this so clear and easy to understand and not as frightening as I thought. I love just about reached where I was going to do my heel flap on my first sock for summer sock camp. I am using a self striping yarn so now I’m thinking maybe I’ll try this method as it does look so nice with the bullseye. Just to fully understand, you knit 62 rounds for the leg, but you’re placing the lightbulb markers in the 60th round? Also, I’ve got really wide feet, I’ll probably want to add at least 4 round just plain knit before doing the decreases, right?
I appreciate the in depth video. I’ve never done an afterthought heel, but would like to try. When you say leave the same amount of room for the heel as you do your toes, what is your reference point? Are you taking the total length of your foot and subtracting the amount of room you need for your heel? For example, if my foot is 10”, and I need 2” for the heel, would I place my marker for cutting the heel at 8” away from the end of the toe?
Excellent tutorial, Kay. I was working on a regular heel as I watched this video.. have you ever used an eye of partridge heel? That is the heel I usually knit. I just wonder if it is a stronger heel in a regular heeled sock. Thanks for your video
Love your videos, so clear and educational. Where did you get the frame thingy on your wall with progress keepers on it? Cute way to keep them on display instead of buried in my notions case.
Oh goodness, I bought that years ago and used it to clip pictures on for awhile. Then eventually put it in my office for progress keepers. I can’t remember if I got it at a dollar store or a craft store. Then I painted it.
How much room should I expect to leave for a toe and afterthought heel on a 72 stitch sock? Thanks, successfully made my 64 stitch pair and loved the tutorial but want to make a pair for my husband as well.😄
Kay your amazing knitter and person to do this for those whom need help to achieve knitting socks . When you can help someone it’s always a blessing . Very thankful . By the way what is your favorite heel? When you measure from toe up to the heel do you measure up to the stitches on the needle or the row below?
I tried it and the flap was easy, i hope I can do the gusset. I’m sorry i don’t mean to be dumb ,but when you say up to the needle. You mean bottom of it where the stitches sit on the needle or above the needle at top of stitches ? Again I’m sorry... Thank you...
That’s not as scary as I thought it’d be 😅 but now I’m wondering what self striping yarn looks like if you don’t do an after thought heel, does it look bad?
I've been wanting to try an afterthought heel where I don't use waste yarn. Your video was great at giving step by step instructions. I was surprised at how easy it was! I'm still working on getting the steps down. I'm noticing the stitches at either end of the slit are creating a tight gathering. I thought it was my tension but that didn't help. I'm wondering if it has to do with the 2 stitches that you leave on either end that is causing this. It's really visible once the heel is completed and I try to lay the sock out flat. Any tips/tricks on dealing with the stitches at either end of the opening?
That can be a little tighter there but it’s not leaving any holes on the side by leaving those there. I haven’t found that the socks wear any differently. All of that seems to be fine when you wear them.
Thank you for the tutorial, I have a problem with my sock before even adding the heel. Idk why but the tube thing that I knit tends to twist a little, so after adding the heel (even though I add it on the right stitches) it doesn't fit properly on my foot and feels uncomfortable. What do you think the twist is for?
Was curious if knitting the four extra rounds to give you a bit more room at the heel/ top of the foot would work with a short row heel? Of not, is there a trick for that kind of heel? When I knit with my hand spun, I like to go toe up (to ensure sufficient yardage), but I find the short row heel a bit tight.
Hello! Thank you for the video, it was a very helpful! I'm confused about where the toe must be placed and the length of the foot of the sock for the tube. I assumed that it would be like doing a typical foot like the heel flap-gusset where you just subtract from the total length of the sock for the toe. When doing afterthought heel, am I subtracting both heel and toe lengths from the total foot length for the tube of the sock? What if the length of your heel is different from the length of your toes?
I was wondering... why not start the toe shaping/decrease after the heel is done? That way the focus first is to do the heel where one wants it..and then the next focus is the foot length. Maybe you mentioned this and I just missed it?
That is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. No unnecessary pre-talk. Every stitch worked completely in view. Great hints about the use of markers. Showed what to do to complete after kichnering, etc which many tutorials leave hanging. Thank you for the obvious prep before releasing this. Super, super, helpful and excellent.

I've always wondered how this was done.. now I know. Wonderful tutorial..

Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. You did a great job explaining everything and making it not seem so scary.
Thank you. Now I have watched you and Kirby. I’ll give it try.
I like the 3 markers idea! Thanks!

You can totally do it!! 🎉❤️🧦
Thanks so much for the video, my 1st pair of afterthought heel socks came out great😊🤗
Thank you for doing this video
And I just got my scrappy Sunday pin and your pin with sock on it love them🥰
Ok cutting into my knitting really was terrifying but after finishing it I feel so cool lol. It's like magic!
It really is like magic!
Very nice video. When I knit striped socks, I usually make the toe and heel a solid, contrasting color. But I must admit Ilike your bullseye technique. I'll have to try that.
P.S. I also appreciate the grafting tip for eliminating the dog ears.
Good instruction. I will be watching it as I do my heel. Thanks.

Great tutorial! Thanks
This is really a very helpful tutorial - thank you🙏🏻 I just love your videos here on YT
Thank you so so much for a wonderful video...so clear & concise & so many great tips. Brilliant!
10 years ago! Oh my. Thank you
I'm going to try this with a center double decrease instead of ssk/k2tog. I feel like it will give a more subtle look to the afterthought heel.
Thanks so much. I have watvhed the kirby video a few times but after your video I now know what to do :D
I’m so glad that this helped!!! ❤️
Excellent tutorial Kay, thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Super helpful!

Kay, is the pattern for these socks available for purchase? I love the zombie colors.
Thank you for another great video 😘
When you started making socks did you make those swatches and gauge your socks before starting? I'm a crocheter, but learning to knit socks too. Love your channel and beautiful socks!
I’ve never swatched for socks ♥️
You made this so clear and easy to understand and not as frightening as I thought. I love just about reached where I was going to do my heel flap on my first sock for summer sock camp. Just to fully understand, you knit 62 rounds for the leg, but you’re placing the lightbulb markers in the 60th round? Also, I’ve got really wide feet, I’ll probably want to add at least 4 round just plain knit before doing the decreases, right?
I do 60 rounds for the leg, place the heel markers on the 60th round. Yep, I would recommend doing the plain K rounds before starting the decreases.
thank you mam
I appreciate the in depth video. I’ve never done an afterthought heel, but would like to try. When you say leave the same amount of room for the heel as you do your toes, what is your reference point? Are you taking the total length of your foot and subtracting the amount of room you need for your heel? For example, if my foot is 10”, and I need 2” for the heel, would I place my marker for cutting the heel at 8” away from the end of the toe?
Yep, that’s correct.
Excellent tutorial, Kay. I was working on a regular heel as I watched this video.. have you ever used an eye of partridge heel? That is the heel I usually knit. I just wonder if it is a stronger heel in a regular heeled sock. Thanks for your video
Yep I have done that a few times. I think it’s comparable to Sl St Heel Flap. They are my preferred heels.
What needle size do you prefer to use on your socks? Thank you. Love your videos.

The best 👌
Great video . 👍🏽❤️
Yeah, yeah,yeah! Thank you!
How much room should I expect to leave for a toe and afterthought heel on a 72 stitch sock? Thanks, successfully made my 64 stitch pair and loved the tutorial but want to make a pair for my husband as well.😄
Sock ruler has not been available on Amazon for over a year. Do you have another suggestion? Thanks.
I know other places sell them, but I don’t know where. I would suggest googling and seeing what other places sell them.
Kay your amazing knitter and person to do this for those whom need help to achieve knitting socks . When you can help someone it’s always a blessing . Very thankful .
By the way what is your favorite heel?
When you measure from toe up to the heel do you measure up to the stitches on the needle or the row below?
❤️❤️ happy to help!
Heel flap and gusset are my favorite.
I measure up to the needle.
I tried it and the flap was easy, i hope I can do the gusset.
I’m sorry i don’t mean to be dumb ,but when you say up to the needle. You mean bottom of it where the stitches sit on the needle or above the needle at top of stitches ? Again I’m sorry... Thank you...
If your heel is a 56 stitches do you still decrease to 12 stitches on each needle before the Kitchener stitch?
Great video! I’m gonna try this out for my next pair of socks. Thanks.
Also, where did you get the cute sneaker stitch marker. So cute hehe
Oh goodness, I can’t remember! 😬 I’m sorry! I’ve had that one for years. If I happen to think where it’s from I’ll let you know!
Great video. What is your favorite toe type and why. Thank you
My favorite toe type is my basic rounded toe that can be found in any of my sock patterns. Fits me great and easy to memorize!
I’m sorry, I don’t knit short row heels.. so I’m not sure what modifications can be done with them.
@@CrazySockLady Just you mentioning customization inspired me to do some digging. Luckily Kate Atherly wrote an article on it! Thanks for the inspo.
Yes you’re subtracting for both. I go over measurements in the video. ❤️
@@CrazySockLady Thank you for the clarification! :D
So, do you measure the entire foot?
I was wondering... why not start the toe shaping/decrease after the heel is done? That way the focus first is to do the heel where one wants it..and then the next focus is the foot length. Maybe you mentioned this and I just missed it?
Mostly because an afterthought heel is supposed to be an “afterthought” something you do when the rest of the sock is complete. ❤️
The yarn is it fine or 3 or 4 ?it looks thicker than the one I have.
