- I know I've talked about this one briefly, but it needed its own video. This game is comically difficult thanks to the giant Woody sprite, but it still has a lot of interesting things going for it...

If anybody is curious, the channel Coding Secrets is run by the dude who programmed this game. He has a two videos on how he achieved some of the 3D effects in this game (one for the 3D section and one for the 2D sections).
I love his channel, it's very interesting how programmers were able to get around the limitations of this older hardware.
Traveler's Tales under him certainly had a knack for interesting technical achievements. Even one of their more infamous games, Rascal, was something of a technical marvel for the PS1 due to it having some pretty detailed visuals for the hardware and being able to run at 60 FPS, a rarity in console (and hell even some PC games) of the era (though it's worth noting Rascal's infamy mostly comes down to bad meddling from the publisher who, rather than use the producer's ideas of making the game play more like Mario 64, forced him to use Tomb Raider styled controls, which hurt the level design too). They also made a game on the PS2 called "Haven" which featured No Man's Sky styled space and planetary travel back in 2002.
not to mention how they got the insane sound quality in Toy Story
oh man I was about to leave the same comment until I saw you beat me to it. Yeah his channel rules.
Wonderful effects from an old 90s gameplay
Neighbor had this for the SNES. We were blown away by the graphics for sure. It was a fun game
I knew this kid down the street that had this game too. Im glad i was able to play it without wasting a birthday present on it lol
shit was hard man lol i remember only getting halfway through
Lmao dude how come our neighbors in the 90's were so cool and had games we wish we had.....now all neighbors do is make sure there's no noise after 5pm lol
@@spellbinder7036 everyone on my street sucked lol i grew up mostly in Anaheim California 2 blocks from disneyland so everybody was conservative and lame
@The CunninLynguist I had it too and it was hard as f***
"You don't want to be in the way when my laser goes off."
“Here it comes”
"WATCH OU!"
Honestly, every level in this game feels like a completely different game. Can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing........
It's also extremely linear. I suppose that's not unusual for the era, but it stuck out to me. I have fond memories of renting it though.
Didn't like it in battletoads and earthworm Jim. I think it's stupid.
@@gjergjaurelius9798 play and leave it fucker
@@gjergjaurelius9798 That's how I feel about Conker's Bad Fur Day as well, it's an average game but I still think it's worth experiencing.
@@gjergjaurelius9798 Idk man. Battletoads is an excellent game.
This game really does look beautiful, at least. You can tell the Pixar people had a huge hand in its development.
JJ in the house! Is this where you get inspired for your channel's sound effects?
A huge hand? How about THE CLAAAAW? 👽
Another thing I find interesting is the first Buzz boss battle is loosely based on a deleted scene where Woody has a nightmare of Andy keeping Buzz and he throws out Woody
Of all places I expected to see you, this is the last
The video game rental difficulty increase is super frustrating as a 16 bit gamer. This is the #1 reason why everyone should own a Game Genie. A good code or two can be the difference between an semi-unplayable mess that leaves you struggling to get to level 2 and a fun, casual playthrough of the game it always should have been.
Own a Game Genie? I think you mean *rent* a Game Genie... every weekend!
Nah. Cartridges had limited space back then especially. You can beat most games from that era in under an hour if you're good. They didn't want people spending $40+ for a game and beating it in an hour; hence them raising the difficulty.
"The first thing you'll notice is the poor edging on Woody"
There was an ad for this game on the Toy Story VHS we had growing up. I wanted it so bad but never got a chance to play it and still haven't. Great review
I still remember those commercials
It's pretty cheap on the Genesis
Played this all the time as a kid. Could speed run it any day. Can’t be the only person who based part of their liking of some properties on if the video game was also fun.
I would love to speedrun this game now that I think about it. Is there a category for collecting all the stars for every level? That is an extremely difficult task, especially during Nightmare Buzz and some others.
On average, It would take me at least half an hour to 3 hours for me to beat this game. Those R.C levels were awful on any controller.
Thank goodness for the invincibility trick in level 1. Just hop up on one of the draws and duck for a few seconds. I actually really loved this game as a kid and played it all the time, but I feel like that nostalgia factor is key in forgiving a lot of it's flaws. Like you said, it's a product of it's time.
Oh yeah!!
I’m reminding renting this game from Blockbuster as a kid. It was difficult back in the day 😆
"Describes how difficult a section is while deftly avoiding everything"
HA! I kinda thought that too
Man we had this game as a kid, and I don't think I ever managed to get past that first level😅
@Samson Themighty yup I hear ya. For me it was toy story, and the lion king on snes😆 that ostrich run was tough
Abe's Odyssey for me 😅
Jesus's Christ that fucking ostrich maze was the end of me I don't know what to do after the double jump
I own a physical copy of toy story and I can't get the first level either
My fiance however did to the second level and quite honestly she stopped playing there to she lost interest in too
georgiaridgerunner 79 toy story is awesome and also fucking tough
Ah yes, one of the top dogs of fake difficulty.
(The trajectory if those exploding fuses seem to be predictable enough that you just stand under them though.)
This game really just hits the nostalgia button, at least for me, and that reason alone is why I’d enjoy it. But really though, everything you said is spot on about it! 👍😎
I remember renting it when I was a kid and the odd choices regarding gameplay and visual presentation on the first level and the fact that the camera works so strange and you don't really have an attack and it's not easy to understand what you even have to do on the first level got me thinking this was an actual pirate game. After finding out how to work on the first level and getting further along in the game I could see some of the good stuff but still it's a game that's far from perfect the floaty movement of Woody is real pain in the ass, and all those little projectiles are impossible to dodge. I think the producers of the game where trying to make something like donkey Kong country very much and though the graphics and sound are okay the gameplay is far from being as polished as DKC
It's like DKC... if it were shit.
Kekeke89 donkey kong is only worth one okay through lol crap game doesn't compare to toy story
@@melancholypuppy3595
Haha. Nice joke.
They were on very tight time constraints to have it done in time for the movie, and they had some overly ambitious ideas. Traveler's tales would have been better off focusing on perfecting the platformer sections instead of stuffing 4 or 5 different play styles in.
I love the glitch/cheat in level one
In level one if you go to the dresser top drawer and almost fall then crouch down for a few minutes your health Star will start spinning your invincible and it you hit start then select you can auto win the the level you are on
2:37 A Master Shake costume had me rollin'! hahah
I remember renting it when I was little, so I tried it out again as an adult. Everything you mentioned is spot on. Controls and hit detection are sloppy and frustrating. And it's WAY too hard for a kids game.
It was hard but I beat it as a kid. I died tons of timed lol.
It's really not that hard at all. I beat it when I was 8 years old and didn't even have to work on it for that long.
"You can't beat Toy Story without cheating"
Or Classic 2 magic. There's some games I never play on my OG system, only on SNES Classic+Classic 2 magic combination.
Not true. I did it, and even proved it to some kids at school when they didn't believe me.
@@Cerebrum123 Me too! I beat it when I was 10. I don't think I can do it today though, the last levels were super hard!
Nice GITCY reference
I had no choice to beat it without cheating . Miss the good old days
I remember playing this game as a child and just how bonkers hard it was.
I loved the HELL out of this as a kid. That RC stage set off my rage though.
Using those good old silicon graphics computers
This is one of the games I mastered as a kid. I would replay and beat this game. The level that would usually give me a challenge would be the claw level. That one was always the struggle in every play through.
For me it’s Sid’s Workbench. When I played this game on the PC as a kid, that was the level that took by far the longest to beat.
I really love this series and the short, straight to the point reviews. I've discovered several great games like E.V.O, Terranigma, and Ragnacenty just to name a few.
I played this on the PC back when it was new. Great sounding and looking game for sure. I think I managed to eventually beat it with some regularity, but damn, it was frustrating at times.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with this game. I was already a toy story fanatic in my youth, and would watch let’s plays and even a review from a crummy public access tv show from the 90s over and over again. I even ripped off portions of levels for stories that I wrote. I didn’t even play the game until a year or so ago, and it’s a flawed but really fun way to kill an hour, once you figure out its quirks.
The guy who made this game is on RUclips. His channel is called Coding Secrets. It's amazing he explains how he made this game. Really awesome. Also great video snes drunk. Been a subscriber since u had like 10k subs.
I grew up with this game. I revisited it last year and it is still a good play yet frustrating. Great video.
To be fair, it is difficult to run and jump when you have an oversized Woody.
Hahaha, good one! Now I’m getting Dwayne Johnson (as Rusty Phallic in “RUSTY”, one of the movies I’d love to eventually make) vibes from this !
The SNES is ever harder due to its worse hit detection (for the whip and the walls from Really Inside the Claw Machine level) and lower horizontal resolution.
The soundtrack to most of the levels were super catchy. The level I could never beat was the claw machine level (saving buzz levels) and the song from that level has forever been stuck in my head.
The Claw Boss Theme is the best track in the game, and one of the best in gaming
This was a decent Super Nintendo game I owned growing up. If you are having trouble in stage 1 go to dresser with army barrel on it and jump into the first open drawer. Press and hold down until your star starts to spin. You are now invincible. Once you successfully do the invincibility cheat if you are still struggling on a stage just press start then select and you will jump to the end of that stage. You really should play the whole game though as it is a decent game.
These visuals really do hold up
(at least on the SNES) it's been what 25 years and this game still looks really good. You can tell they really put effort into this game something I can't say about any other Disney game from the last 25 years outside of the original epic Mickey.
"Oversized Woody..."

I remember thinking that this game looked awesome back in the day.
I don't remember the sound/music.
Still looks great.
My compliments stop there.
Great video!!
I owned Toy Story and The Lion King for SNES as a kid. I'm quite surprised people think of them as super difficult games today. Back then, I was frustrated by Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Ghosts and Ghouls as too difficult to beat games. These were the easy ones for me. It's interesting to hear how other people, and SNESDrunk, encounter them today. Great video as always.
I've never really played this game very much, but I do have a memory of it. I was in a Toys R' Us in 1996 checking out Super Mario 64. (Mario can do karate now?!) When I grew tired of waiting for a turn on the display, I wandered down the game aisle and saw the SNES display with a copy of Toy Story plugged in. There was nobody at this display on account of the SNES being old news now and Toy Story having released the previous year, unlike the N64 which had a small crowd. I entertained myself for a bit, marveling at the 3d looking scrolling background and large, detailed sprites.
this game has probably the best graphics i've ever seen for 16 bit console, always loved the digitized sprite games!
oh man, an aaaaabsolute favorite of mine. Sunk so many hours into this with my friends. Regardless of how it holds up today I remember totally loving this. We were really into a few other licensed games like Lion King, Aladdin, etc.
Total length of video: 329 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 4.5 secs.
1.37% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
thank you for your service dear friend
Love your videos bro!
I have seen toy story pretty much one million times
The art style of this game looks awesome
I remember as a kid I couldn't get past the first board and gave up on the game it collected dust for a while. After getting tired of playing killer instinct and mastering all the ultra combos without any guide but just building the combos up until I had success. it motivated me to try toy story again. To make a long story short i completed it within a couple of days. Toy story and The Lion King was the games I had to overcome and I will never forget the journey.
Can’t believe you actually finished this, way to power through the buzz tire boss!
Had this game on the Genesis growing up, and honestly, that's the version to go for. The color palette is more limited, obviously, but the added screen real estate is good, the music was actually very well done (especially compared to many other Western-developed Genesis titles that really phoned in the FM instruments), it has some things the SNES version doesn't (aside from the level mentioned in the review, the Claw boss has another hazard to dodge, Nightmare Buzz's laser is much longer and less dinky (but just as easy to dodge), the "REALLY Inside the Claw Machine" layout is different, there's music during all story segments instead of the pure silence of the SNES version, etc)... It really feels like it was the lead version, which makes sense given how much TT had done with they system beforehand (or with the Amiga, which the Genesis shared a decent bit of hardware with).
There's also a PC version, but IIRC it doesn't work on Windows XP. It also seems to be capped at 30FPS (or was when last I tried it on a Windows 98 machine), and is missing both the Genesis-exclusive "Day-Toy-Na" level and the "REALLY Inside the Claw Machine" level. An interesting curiosity but I'd recommend either 16-bit console version over it.
Two nitpicks with stuff in the review:
* Yeah, you were hitting Nightmare Buzz with your whip - but he's invulnerable while he has his fireball shield, and then when he's flashing after the shield is destroyed. Probably should've just had him flashing the entire time he was invulnerable for consistency, though, but it was pretty straightforward once you figured it out.
* You don't need to dodge the tire during the Real Buzz fight, it doesn't interact with Woody in any way other than to bounce when he whips it.
The rest was pretty much spot-on; it's a very difficult game, but one I'm still very fond of. Most of its more BS moments are fairly manageable with a bit of memorization, though I guess that makes this a "pick-up-and-die" game, as you sometimes put it. Certainly an apt descriptor, anyway. (And even then, I don't know if I could ever truly get used to how much crap "Roller Bob" flings at you at once...)
Reminds me of that Nes Simpsons game...the one the the purple spray paint. Both the way you describe the plot/missions and the platforming.
YOOOOOOOO I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO COVER THIS ONE FOREVER AAAAAAA
I had this game when I was little. Man, I was a pro at swinging from hooks with Woody's pullstring. That stuff took some precision! Good times. I still love it. And of course, the graphics were stunning back in the day.
I loved this game so much when I was a kid. I played it on the genesis, and I only ever beat it with the invincibility turned on. Such a great game!
this game was hard as hell lol i rented it several times and could only get about half way through it
SNES drunk played through the SNES and Genesis versions of this game for the review, and the review really makes it seem like I wouldn't want to do that myself. So thanks for the work!
The lead programmer did an excellent video on the technical wizardry of the game various aspects on Game Hut and there's a quite good director's cut patch out there.
Had this for the Genesis and this was fun to play around with, but also difficult later on (unless you're using the invincibility cheat, but even that won't save you from anything time-limited).
Wow, these graphics are amazing. There’s so many animations and they’re so smooth. Even DKC wasn’t this good
Such a great looking game I always wanted. Remember seeing it advertised on a VHS tape as a kid. Though by that point, the family and most others were focusing on the PS1 and some SNES games were likely becoming harder to come by by then... 🙃
Specialized press in my country considered Toy Story one of the last great games of the 16 bit era. Prerenderized graphics were still a novelty and gave the feeling that you were playing a next generation game and the level variety was an incentive to keep playing.
While I watch nearly all of your videos, this has to be the one of the first I recognize stuff from... even if it's from the gameboy port of this game, which was the first console I owned.
It's absurdly obvious but man it sure looks better on the SNES than what I remember from it (and Woody is indeed still way too big for the screen...) but seeing some stages I recognize is a new feeling here haha.
The Buzz nightmare boss fight scared me as a kid for some reason. Not exactly sure why.
As a kid, I loved Toy Story. So naturally my folks bought me the PC version of this one. It’s nearly identical to what I recall. Sure it’s frustrating at times. My siblings and I took turns to see who could get through certain parts of the game if one of us was having difficulties doing so. At least the PC version gave you the choice to revisit old levels and pick up where you left off. The only way to do that in the SNES game is to kneel down on one of the drawers in the first level for a certain amount of time till Woody’s star count begins to spin. You can skip levels with start/select, but this makes you invincible to taking damage. Doesn’t work on the auto scrolling levels or levels like the RC one where you can run out of batteries. Still a nostalgic trip for me playing this game. Totally worth checking out if you have the patience.
I always see everyone talking up how difficult Lion King was in the 16 bit era, but I found this one far more difficult. The levels from Sid's Room on are a freaking nightmare, and as said in the video the hurtboxes and hitboxes in this game are straight up nonsense.
The best graphics for a licensed game on the SNES forsure. Maybe even top 3 for the SNES overall.. still haven’t beat the game without save states though 😂
2:10 - Well, you were supposed to hit all those forcefield-ball-thingies to make Buzz become vulnerable. And even then he only takes damage as soon as he presses the teleport button.
I actually don't remember the hit detection being that bad, at least not in the Genesis version.
Other than that, the review is spot-on.
It seems a lot of people just can't get past the RC car part early in the game even though the controls are pretty simple. they just don't seem to understand that left doesn't mean you're traveling left it means you're turning left and right doesn't mean you're traveling right that means you're turning right. Honestly I think the hardest level on the game is when you're actually racing out of Sid's house and occasionally that stupid dog scud shows up and causes you to have to be in the middle of the screen instead of the left.
I have a fond memory for this game. I never completed it as a kid, but I did recently.
The problem of the SNES version is the hit box whip, you can only touch things with the ring of your whip. On Genesis, the hit bow whip is complete. It's make this game much easier and enjoyable to play.
I adjusted to that right away
It kind of makes logical sense in a way, the ring is the hard part, the string wouldn't hurt at all. You do adjust to it.
I used to like it, but all your issues were spot on. I still liked it, but to all the effort and uniqueness. I owned it so the difficulty didn't bug me as much.
It’s cool that SNES drunk mentions the movie was ambitious, much like the game and does it ever show. I own the cardboard case Sega Genesis version and it’s pretty neat.
I remember getting Toy Story for Christmas in 4th grade along with Tetris Attack. I was much more excited for this game because I loved the movie, but in retrospect, Tetris Attack holds up MUCH better and is an immensely better game!
I had once the Genesis Version which was ok :) Gold Video Alex 😃
Great review
If I want to play a platformer with cheap hits and floaty controls I’ll play road runner Death Valley rally. Thanks for another awesome review snes drunk!
I had this for the SNES. Not sure how I beat it as a kid.
Fucking hard for sure
I felt that comment about not finishing it with one rental. I remember being in like first or second grade struggling through the RC level and eventually one day got to the last level only to lose all my lives and having to return the game
I’ve beaten this game a few times as a kid. Love the variety of levels in this game. But the Lion King game on the other hand I never got passed the second stage.
I was expecting a lot worse from a licensed game. Add unlimited contimues and do something to fix your giant hit box, and this would probably be remembered as one of the great 16 bit platformers.

This was one of my favorite games when I was a kid.
02:38 Solid Shake was right there
I used to love this game on Mega Drive, I still remember the ABRACADABRA cheat 25 years later.
Loved this game. My most enduring memory is that I was 100% convinced I could somehow win the race against Buzz (it’s pre rendered I just thought I needed to be better). The first-person part also blew my mind I thought it was so impressive looking.
This game was notoriously hard for me as a kid but I loved it.
Dude Id rank this up there as a classic!! One of my Snes games ever
I just want to note: There is also Game Boy Version of this game, that I had as a kid and... well... if you think the SNES Resolution makes it hard to anticipate things, imagine how it is on the game boy!
Ah, this game...its manual had what might be the single worst hint in gaming history. I was stuck for ages on the Buzz boss fight, because he is immune to your attacks, there is no in-game hint to tell you how to hurt him, and the manual gives this "helpful" clue: "Keep moving and see if you can tire him out". I spent ages trying to dodge his bouncing around (which is hard as hell) before finally getting frustrated enough to try attacking again, and HAPPENED to be standing in the right spot to hit the tire (which does not move unless you hit it and appears to be a part of the background). Hours wasted because of a damned pun...
This was an AWESOME game. Loved everything about it growing up
This game is the furthest thing from being hard. I beat this game when I was 9 years old back in 1995 for snes and it was easily one of my favorite games. I was only a 9 year old child and I beat it. Some levels make you think a little bit but it doesn't even scratch the surface on what a hard game is.
Yeah. I'm reading these comments and I'm wondering if these people have actually played a hard game. Lol. This is pretty easy for that era of games.
My dad rented this game for me on SNES back in the day. I now own the game for Genesis.
Great video! Any chance of a worth playing today video about Goof Troop? 😀
If I remember correctly I think the genesis version (smaller colour palette aside) had some graphical effects that were absent in the snes version. I seem to remember it playing smoother as well.
I didn't have a SNES as a kid, but I distinctly remember playing this game. The giant sprite of Buzz during the first boss fight is particularly memorable. Was this game on PC too? That's the only way I can think I would have played it
The Pal version of the Genesis version has a password system which makes the game much more enjoyable. I do prefer the Megadrive version if anybody asks and I feel like it does look better in some levels with it's color palette. Also the game is kinda made with the limitations of the Genesis in mind so It doesn't really surprise me that they made a first person level.
I loved this game as a kid. I always used the invincibility cheat though lol.
I had the SNES version, but after playing the Sega Genesis version, I felt the Genesis version was better especially cause the Genesis version add more pictures during the cutscenes and most importantly it played You Got a Friend in Me from the movie which the Super Nintendo version did not have and it also had a credit scroll at the end
Thank you for finally doing this video nobody covers this and Sega's jungle book nearly enough
Despite how hard this game looks like (never played it back in the day, only saw it briefly for sale and/or rental back in the SNES days), damn, the graphics are really quite impressive for it's time.
The frame rate in that 3D level is amazing for the SNES! Sure, the field of view is really low, and there's some texture warp that would makes the PS1 blush, but holy cow, that is a solid 30+ FPS at what seems to be all times. Compare that to Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Faceball 2000, or Jurassic Park and it's a night and day difference.
There aren't any enemies any gunfire or anything of note going on. It's just empty wandering around a maze to pick up aliens.
It's not comparable to doom by any stretch of the imagination. Unless you wanted to compare it to an empty doom with no guns and no enemies. I bet that would run a solid 30+ FPS too.
I think the guy from the channel "Game Hut" helped make the game and has a video on how they did the 3D levels.
Loved this game as a kid
I'm early today, nice!
Edit: I didn't knew Toy Story had those other levels, they look awesome, also I really like the 3D look of it
This game was really impressive for the time, i remember renting it from blockbuster as a kid, it was a fun rental
How do you grab onto the rope in the 3rd level? I always fall off like the video and can't find out how to hold on
I had no problem beating the Genesis version as a kid. There are passwords, which help a lot.
