      I'd thank the Navy, followed by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas. The YF-17 lost the US Air force's Lightweight Fighter Competition and was dead at that point. But the Navy put out a requirement for a new Aircraft that was cheaper to operate then the F-14. Northrop enlarged there original design and McDonnell Douglas contributed by strengthening the undercarriage and making the aircraft carrier capable. The F-16s undercarriage is to light to take on carrier landings.

    What a great company to work with - they knew/know how to build the aircraft that we numpties want to fly.

  • @kolbola
    @kolbola 4 года назад +4

    I hope, at least the Block III will get the F414 EPE engines, finally. The Block I and Block II F414 engines are more than 25 years old and even if it was around 30% more powerful, than the old F404, it was not enough powerful to the much heavier Super Hornet. The EPE is ready long time ago, but neither the Boeing, nor the US Navy were interested in it. I don’t know, why. The other old bug is the weird, canted pylons, which were the most bizarre “engineering” solution of a too lately revealed design issue. Because of the airflow around the new intakes, from the original straight pylons, the dropped bombs and fuel tanks could collide to the fuselage. Instead of a proper new position of the pylons, the McDD’s engineers just turned outwards the pylons, to generates a twisting aerodynamic force to preventing the collision. During the era, when Boeing bought the McDonnel Douglas Co, there was no time/money to make a correct redesign. The result is a much higher drag, far less range and more stress on the airframe. The Super Hornet lost all range and speed advance on the legacy Hornet, what was demanded. In 2020, if Boeing would like to beat Lockheed and the performance of the F-35 family, somehow has to solve these old issues.

    • @tubertuber3757
      @tubertuber3757 9 месяцев назад

      I realize this is an old issue, but to update on what has happened since this video was posted: The Block III wasn't planned to get the F414 EPE engines. The reason is quite simple: No one, in the US or elsewhere, was willing to pay what it would cost to actually develop the EPE, which is a "paper" engine. There were parties interested in looking at the EPE as long as someone else paid the large sum of money necessary to develop it. No one thought the benefit gained was worth the upfront cost. The Super Hornet has not been a big success in export sales. Australia bought them without competition because they felt it would be a good placeholder until they could get the plane they really wanted, the delayed F-35. Kuwait bought them to replace its aging Classic Hornets, but they bought Typhoons as well. Aside from those two, there have been no export sales of the Super Hornet that might produce a market that would be interested in developing the EPE. Boeing's losing Super Hornet bid to India included the EPE, but that meant India would have to shoulder the development costs, a prospect that didn't appeal to them. The other nations that are building aircraft that use the F414 (Sweden, Korea and India) aren't producing enough to justify the cost to develop the EPE.
      The problem with the wing pylons on the Super Hornet, is that by having six instead of four the inner ones were too close to the fuselage and there were safety concerns about launching powered ordnance off the inner pylons. This wasn't discovered until flight test. If you look at the first Super Hornet prototypes, they had straight pylons,; angling them out on later airframes was done to make the pylons usable for weapons launching.
      Boeing has no illusions about competing with the F-35, but was hoping to sell it as a cheaper alternative if you didn't need all the F-35 could do. . However, whatever you may think about the plane, the F-35 has won every contest in which it was entered. Boeing was going to shut the Super Hornet line in 2025, but Congress directed the Navy to buy 17 more, so that has been postponed until 2027.

    I see a lot of comments here talking about a tomcat 21. I would like to see one also , that said i think most people would be disappointed, since it would end up being similar to the super hornet. There would have been a conversion of power to reliability, lower fuel consumption and easy of maintenance on the engines. The fuselage would have to be adjusted for partial stealth. The weapon system would end up being similar to the hornet since something like the aim -54 would have problems operating today and in logistic terms making things as uniform was possible since we are not living in the cold war , where budgets would flex in response to your enemy. All of that would have impact on the "new tomcat" . There is a logic behind the Hornet being what it is and despite multiple advancements and redesigns to never reach the performance of the f-14, - the requirements of the US Navy. .

    But does he love flying it? Then again, the only time I can remember seeing a pilot jumping up and down with joy when (test) flying a jet was every time Paul Metz stepped out of a yf-23. In short, when asked, "Is it cool?" His response is all you need to know! Smiled the entire time. Though he didn't seem too enthused by the yf-22. Anyway, we know how that story went.
    Just wish they would've designed the 'super hornet' to where its redesigned engine inlets where extended further towards the cockpit, closer to the front landing gear, to where it met flush with the trailing edge of the wing. That way, they'd have more area for external hard points to mount dead weight to the underbelly of the plane and not just its wings.

    Excellent! Question: Can anyone tell me what advantage there is in purchasing an F vs an E variant?? I've read all the specs on both, but apart from the F being a two-seater (WSO), I don't see the rationale. But I'm a former Army guy, so... ;-)

    • @hentaitittyhunter9946
      @hentaitittyhunter9946 4 года назад

      The E variant is a heavier and modified version of the F. It's made for electronic warfare rather than being a fighter. It can defend its self if it has to, but it's not quite as maneuverable as the F variant.

    It is a very nice looking plane. Why does it need to have two engines at this point? I would have thought that there are other airplanes with twin engines that fit into that role that are more stealthy? I see some on youtube are showing there is a South Korean KF-21 and yet that looks like a sort of fit in-between plane? Is the F/A-18 Super Hornet plane more stealthy a little bit smaller and does it perform better with just one engine at this point? Can it be made a little bit more stealthy that way with the existing design such that there is a role for the F/A-18 and maybe as a new F/A-18 Ultimate Hornet that has one engine and is more stealthy version? That would be a tough plane to do without on some of the aircraft carriers and also in some other places? I would think that a F/A-18 Ultimate Hornet would be a better plane than an in-between plane and would have still have a place in active military service? I like music videos and so I seen this song tribute on youtube "Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet - Numb Linkin Park" and I had also seen the youtube video "LOCKHEED F-35 TRIBUTE - CALL ON ME" and also "Doug Stone - In A Different Light Lyrics" and "Garth Brooks - The Dance (Lyrics)" and it made me think of this song again "Debbie Gibson - In Your Eyes" and so I was just saying that I thought that the F/A-18 was a very important plane!! Thank You!!
