Great video, Boeing. I wish it were longer so we could spend the whole flight with "Bull Schmidt." The F-18 Super Hornet is such a cool, badass plane, and Bull Schmidt is a soft-spoken pilot who'd no doubt splash any pilot he faced in any other plane. Thank you, Bull!
RonJohn63 An SU-33 would destroy an F-18.... only if an American was flying the SU and a Russian pilot was in the Hornet!!! To be honest though the SU is one of the sexiest fighter aircraft ever built, cant deny that!
burpless6148 haha. There is nothing wrong with having some national pride in the best trained and best equipped military the world has ever seen. Invincible... no, but I would gamble that the US Air Force is man for man superior than any other in the world. Of course it better be, we spend more on our military per year than Russia, China, England, and the next 5 countries combined.
Love me some Hornet!!! Kinda cool to see it without paint. Didn't know it was green underneath. As someone else said, it would be cool to see a longer video. Hell even a Documentary following Order Submission through first flight then delivery. God that would be awesome! NatGeo where are you!!!!
No, he was at mach 1 at about 50,000 feet. lower air pressure, different speed readout which is why speed is referenced by mach numbers. Even commercial airlines use this.
I'm 9 and I understand all this!!! I love well I loved the Vulcan bomber but now it's grounded I get really depressed but I'm still able to see it in museums which I can live with !
Darren I wish I was as smart and as interested in something when I was your age! At age 9 I was just riding bikes with my friends mostly. you're a really remarkable kid. keep that sense of wonder and interest - in anything you like - along with practicality, and you will be super at anything you set your mind to. Imagination, invention, and curiosity has gotten kind of pushed out of schools, but school learning is what will bring it all together when you're older, so definitely keep it all alive and related in your thinking. There are going to be some really wonderful steps of progress made in many areas of science and engineering in your lifetime, and you can be part of that. Learn a little about innovative people like Craig Ventner, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and many others who are visionaries and entrepreneurs, not to "copy them" but just to get an idea of how they think. Press ahead, life is cool, a miracle, and the next life - changing invention or thought could come from your mind. m
That would be a cool airplane for rides, but I am an airliner guy, that does not really get into weaponry, except that my favorite war bird is the B 1 bomber. Would be interesting if Boeing gave 30 minute flights in that F/A-18 jet, and if so, I wonder how much it would cost?
bryant tillman And just under 9 seconds to boot that was ridiculous! You wouldn't think a brand new airplane taking it's wings for the first time would be pushed that hard like that. For sure I would've thought he'd bring up the engines slowly for the first take off and use up as much runway as possible to build take-off speed, but perhaps that's a testament to that amazing aircraft is it's short take-off capabilities. So much wing surface and lift created.
GoMiGman No, no, I'm looking at this thing again...it's just not possible. Rollout is just a nickle longer than a carrier catapult launch. Somethings wrong, here.
I think the US government made the wrong choice when they chose Lockheed over Boeing to develop the next 5 generation stealth fighter. I've always thought that Boeing had a better repertoire at developing exceptional and dependable jet fighters than Lockheed Martin.
The F-35 ended up big the most expensive military project ever and continually rising because of tech and software issues. So I wonder how that's going for them.
That'll do for the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF)! I'm sure it's a better fit than the stupid F-35 we are (kind of) ordering now. It's a shame you did not send a F/A-18 to the RNLAF open days in Volkel last month.
Grammar Nazi no I mean innocents in cities who get bombed by drones and then get labeled as militants You do know the US government has had innocents from those areas (one was a taxi driver) tortured right? But no all muslims in those oppressed areas who are terrorized by those terrorists more than the US has are definitely terrorists right? Yeah that's what I thought
I have only one thought, why is Boeing continuing to prop up an old airframe? Almost all of the new airframes use a forward horizontal stabilizer instead of a tail wing. It offers better high performance maneuvers, so maybe invest in a new airframe that doesn't cost as much as the F-18.
Zac Youngson Why don't you read the true story of how the government killed the F-20, almost forcing customers to buy a considerably more expensive F-16. Israel was interested in buying the plans for F-20 only to have the government give them a wonderful deal on F-16. Northrup was afraid to challenge the Reagan people in fear they would cut them out of the B-2 program. If you don't understand how the government chooses designs, then you don't understand why some are kept around and others never get into production.
C17 Miss Air Guard Rules the skies first to go and wings of the South no mission to small or large when you need help we are ready to help and defend ..
Since Navy's switching to F-35C and there are no more export customers for the aircraft I belive you won't be proud of this job. The production should end sometime in 2016-2017.
I can't see that piece of garbage being successful in the US much less for other countries especially considering the fact that over 90% of the foreign customers have already pulled out of the fiasco, I mean deal to purchase the F-35. I think its abject failure on the global market is exactly why Boeing is putting so much effort in their development. I can't believe what the F-35 has cost the taxpayers. It's like its the F111 debacle all over again the an exponential degree. The F-15 has the best win/loss record in history (102-0) and both the f-16 and the F/A-18 are still some of the best. I say give them the radar etc from the two lemons, F-22 and F35 and keep them in the skies at a fraction of the cost.
+mike michael and we gonna do until we got it right, and that this nation do best,we just don't stop there, improvement is the best quality. God bless the USA,and USAF.

Nice, i'm a pilot flying with VFA-102 at Naval Air Facility Atsugi. Welcome Steve Schmidt to the Super Hornet fleet.
Wow, what a dream job this guy has :D Nice work!
Just wanted to say I'm very proud of my son Jimmy Kent Jr. , he works at Boeing in Charleston SC.
that's cool man! i know he makes you proud
Steve, may you be blessed with CAVU skies and safe flights always! Greetings from South Florida!
Jebediah Kerman says that we need more rockets and more struts.
Absolutely beautiful. A true work of art. 2 min well spent
Where are all the Russians bragging on the Su-33 or Chinese saying how the J-15 will kick the F/A-18's ass?
RonJohn63 An SU-33 would destroy an F-18.... only if an American was flying the SU and a Russian pilot was in the Hornet!!! To be honest though the SU is one of the sexiest fighter aircraft ever built, cant deny that!

Fantastic job!
Love that he says "we're goin' flying" as he rotates. A grass roots pilot at heart.
This guy is awesome! He's a Topgun graduate!

Super Hornet first flew in 1995.
Why release this video now ?
Look at the mach on the right side. 260 kts CAS at 48,000ft is the speed of sound.
Longer Video please! Almost 50000ft! Wow
Is it my imagination or was takeoff distance less than 600 ft?? Harriers can't even rotate that fast.
so WTF? I've seen Hornets pull all kinds of shit, but to rotate faster than a piper cub in gale headwind??!
going by the runway marker i don,t think you far off cool video

100ft and an inverting ramp...! No, the plane in question is the Hornet above, which didn't use more than 600ft worth of runway, according to the vid
Absolutely fabulous!
Lol, the "Green Hornet" :)
I think the US government made the wrong choice when they chose Lockheed over Boeing to develop the next 5 generation stealth fighter. I've always thought that Boeing had a better repertoire at developing exceptional and dependable jet fighters than Lockheed Martin.

Yep, even 16s are still in production. C130Js, even being turboprop, are still in production as well.
How does the F/A-18 fly vs an F14? From a pilots perspective.
Just curious:
Why thumbs down from 67?
