    • @Maialeen
      @Maialeen Год назад +346

I thought season one was fantastic. The show was aesthetically just beautiful, the mystery was intriguing, the feeling of being suspended in time in that town where everything is both old and new just added to the eerie, dreamy feeling. That season can be watched on its own and if you pretend it ended there, it's enjoyable. I don't know what drugs people responsible for the show started taking but I've never seen anyone drop the ball like that. The devolution of this show is one of the most bizarre things that's happened with any tv show on television. Even weirder than Family Matters morphing from a family sitcom to a zombified Steve Urkel hellscape.

I remember when Veronica was hosting the makeout party, he looked visibly disinterested. He was obsessed with comics, food, and being a writer. I remember the scene where he took her to the movie theater and ordered enough snacks for a group of people and asked Veronica is she wanted any. I hate how asexual people are left out of the queer community!

It would be one thing if the story had them continuing their close friendship post school, but its weird if they all split after graduation. Especially since the reboot season meant they didnt have the bonds from living through all the wild stuff in the first 6 seasons.

I really think if they had gone the anthology route this show could have been way more than it was. If each season was it's own story, with the same characters spread over different times, with new challenges and goals and each season being it's own complete story RAS could have told dozens of different stories with these characters without falling all over himself to make everything that didn't fit make sense.
Imagine at the end of season 1, no shooting just the four main characters enjoying milkshakes. And then season 2 hits, maybe it's set in the 70s and the Black Hood holds up Pop's Diner and we get to try and figure out who the Hood is with everyone more or less at new start positions. They aren't the same characters so you really have no idea who it could be. Season 4 could be the Organ trafficking ring set 20 years into the future. Season 5 could be about witches set in the 1800s, etc...
It would hardly be breaking new ground but it would have meant RAS could tell his insane stories without giving everyone an aneurysm. And, since every season the characters would be stripped down to their base component parts everyone would be a suspect, everyone would be discovering things about themselves. And, since a lot of people attach themselves to certain characters it would be a great way to mess with people's perceptions of themselves. A lot of people identify with Jughead as he was in season 1, someone who was going through a hard time and had to focus a lot on basic survival, like keeping a roof over his head. But what if in season 2 he comes from an affluent family and was as entitled as Cheryl or Veronica? Would he still be as beloved?

Love triangles, kitschy character/relationship dynamics, even fan-service are all one thing, but having your characters watch their own television show in a group together just to see their reactions? Never would have guessed.
The pilot and these videos are the extent to my engagement with the Riverdale TV show and even after hearing all of what has gone on these past seven seasons, it's the watching your own series to remember your past that is tripping me up the most.

Like of course depicting Black queer joy is really important but there’s something weird and tone deaf to me about the way they’re both so open and confident in their sexualities and exist to support their white partners through their coming outs as though being Black and queer in the 50s wouldn’t have been incredibly terrifying?? It feels like Roberto said intersectionality? Don’t know her. Like they’re manic pixie dream POCs or something. YES thank you. That's exactly how I felt too. They served us a glossy whitewashed version of the 1950s where people like Clay and Toni could have been open about who they are as POC living in a small town, without getting lynched. That's not how it would have gone down. And you're so right, their only role in season 7 was to support their white partners' coming of age stories. Notice how we know Kevin and Cheryl's 1955 families (even Kevin's mum who up until now had never appeared on the show) but we know nothing of Clay's and Toni's. Toni's kid has vanished into thin air. They even retconned Toni's ethnicity from Native American to black without batting an eyelid, like POC's ethnicities are interchangeable, so Toni's family who we had met before don't exist anymore. I know the actress is Tanzanian and mixed-raced but Toni Topaz isn't. And poor Pop didn't get a single line this season. They even killed him off and closed down his business, when in the original timeline he was happily retired and living his best life. I hate season 7 so much.

That's the worst anwser one can come up with. For starters, it's the coward's way out: you wrote a love triangle and you're afraid of whatever pairing you choose being the wrong one, so you choose both. Second, it's unrealistic: poligamous relationships never last in real life because, surprisingly, the relationships that form part of it always end up breaking up. Third, it's gross: at that point what you have is not a relationship, it's an orgy group.
I once read a series of 9 books called Forged Destiny or something in the span of 4 years that was really good, but the series took a dive in quality in the last 2 books because readers kept harrasing the author due to the fact that he introduced a love triangle of sorts in the 8th book (The roots were there since the 3rd book TBH) and fans of the pairing kept demanding for him to make their favorite couple canon. The last book was about all the countries of the world bunkering together against a siege by the literal forces of evil and, I kid you not, two thirds of the story is dedicated to the love triangle while thousands die defending the citadel they were at, and then the last chapter and epilogue were about how the love triangle decided to become a polygamous relationship. NOBODY was happy with that and let the author know it. Moral of the story being that taking the polygamous route leaves no one happy (Except maybe people that like anime).

To a lot of people it sort of cemented/highlighted the idea that Riverdale is pretty performative in its "activism", and that it only shows relationships that its creators/writers see as hot

Most likely when they got their memories back (long story), they finally remembered they were friends. Then they'd go on double-dates with the girls during senior year and both sleep with them (separately), but there's never been any romantic vibe between the two of them. Archie and Reggie however watched gay porn together and had a threesome with a middle-aged prostitute (at the age of 15... lots to unpack there but it's OOT). For the Life of me I can't understand how the writers came up with a lot of this stuff for Riverdale except for throwing things against the wall and seeing what stuck.
Like I can understand the New York time of Glee because the show was a juggernaut nobody wanted to stop. They needed to take Rachel there, but instead of giving Lea Michelle a spin-off they split the show, and had a hard time balancing it back.
But I cannot for the life of me figure out How a Dungeons and Dragons cult/gang almost took over Riverdale. Or how they suddenly developed Superpowers.

Throughout which the female protagonist dwells on the future of the people she encounters as well as eventually comes to realize that people don't appreciate the simple joys of life while living it--and how terribly sad that is.
TLDR: The series finale is just a Riverdale adaptation of Our Town's Act 3.

We start the first episode in Betty‘s bedroom looking through Archie‘s window and we revisit it in the last almost full circle. So yeah Betty is the main character and Jughead is the narrator I think that’s why he remembers everything. The same way Tabitha exists as Tabitha and as a guardian angel, Jughead exists as Jughead and as a narrator (like the Jughead from Rivervale). I find it weird that the whole finale episode was centered around Betty when Archie is supposed to be the main character of the entire show and we were just told his ending instead of seeing it.

Even when Archie was seemingly leading storylines Betty would end up the protagonist. The Black Hood arc starts out Archie focused but it’s Betty who ends up in the game of psychological cat and mouse with the killer (who is retconned into being her father). Betty and Jughead drive the plot more than Archie does because it feels like the writers both didn’t settle on how to handle the character and wanted to keep KJ Apa retaining a buff physique to show off sans shirt.

i liked that they just got to have a lot of fun with the characters and explore a load of different dynamics and just enjoy themselves for their last season together, it’s very clear they all had a blast filming everything! it was fun to watch and refreshing from the previous seasons didn’t take itself seriously at all! it was fun to make fun of itself and just completely delve into a comic book TV show, like the 3 comic book stories episode was definitely my favourite! and the ending for them all in the sweet hereafter was very school. weird, crazy, camp, meta, reminisce on the journey they had and the relationships they formed over the last 7 years

I knew a kid in middle school that was obsessed with Archie Comics. His whole room was themed around it. I often think about him and about what he thinks of this show.

Is it technically a quad relationship if Jughead and Archie aren't in a romantic relationship with each other?

Who's to say they weren't? Yeah, there's not much to support in the show, but the core four had a weird relationship anyway

@@JM-gs5oc Betty never mentioned them hooking up and there's never been any vibe between them so it's safe to say they weren't together. Had Reggie been part of the quad instead of Jughead it probably would have been different. Anyway, technically quad can have any kind of combinations including threesomes, foursomes, 101 only etc. There are no rules.

Devil's advocate: this season is a response to the haters of the show all of this time. When you started describing the season as just a bunch of scenes without a storyline, it reminded me of the actual archie comics. There really is no plot or character development over literal decades of the comics. It made me wonder if the creators were saying "see? This is what would have happened if we remained absolutely true to the source material and didn't take risks!"
That being said it doesn't mean the show was GOOD all this time lol.

For all the people who criticised Mandalorian S3 for feeling aimless, Riverdale S7 was truly aimless.

Right, which hey I get. A lot of people do not like Slice of Life or true Grand Odyssey Epics because it can be slooow. It's why when I talk about certain fantasy series I think people have a mini-stroke. However, that doesn't mean they can't do yet another good bunch of tonal whiplash and think that's okay. According to Alex the show's basically rebooted itself three times (Season 1 is its own thing, Season 2, 3, 4 are its own thing, 5, 6 are its own thing, and Season 7 is its own thing given how their Riverdales have notably distinct rules, characterizations, genres even, etc.)

There's a skill needed to doing an episodic slice of life show and still make it interesting. With the comics, no one was expecting more than high school shenanigans and four page punchlines. Meanwhile this show went so off the rails insane that trying to make it a simple slice of life now just gives a resounding 'That's it?' in response and it feels like it has nothing going on with it. I do agree that this felt like the show trying to punch down and listen to criticism but they half assed it like everything else.

@@tarotsushima3332 That’s exactly how I felt about this season. Even if they tried to tone things down, why not do something interesting along the way? Even the Murderous Milk Man storyline was picked up and dropped off in such a short amount of time that when they brought it back it felt so redundant.
