WARBIRDS AT LAKENHEATH EXTREMELY RARE P-51 MUSTANG & SPITFIRES THREE-SHIP FORMATION FLYPAST

- This is either a first or an extremely rare sight at RAF Lakenheath; a three-ship formation consisting of a P-51 Mustang, Spitfire FR XIV & Spitfire Mk. Vc. The three warbirds carried out a flypast before running into a "missing man" formation. The remaining two Spitfires went into a break to land along with the P-51 Mustang.
The three aircraft with callsign "Warbird" belong to Ultimate Warbird Flights who not only participate in displays but also offer flight experiences in their superb range of heritage aircraft, including a Hispano Buchon (ME109)!
The P-51D Mustang powered by a Packard Merlin V-1650-7, decorated as "Jersey Jerk" 44-15152 in honour of Major Donald Strait who was assigned to the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF during WW2. Strait flew 122 missions with 13.5 kills, 10.5 of those with the P-51. He was a top Ace of the 356th FG and decorated 9 times. He has an honour of being in the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame.
The Spitfire with the clipped wings and white stripes is MV293, a Supermarine Spitfire FR XIV. She was built at the end of 1944 at Keevil and put into storage by the RAF until early 1945. She was sent from RAF Lynham to India. Service details have been lost sadly but she was recovered back to England in the early 70s. Restoration was completed in 1992 and has been gracefully operational ever since.
Lastly, EE602, a Spitfire MK Vc built on 11th September 1942 by Westland in Yeovil, Somerset under contract number B124305/40 was built with a universal ‘C’ wing configuration which allowed the aircraft to be fitted with either 8 machine guns, 4x 20mm canons or a mix of 4x .303 machine guns and two 20mm canons.
Fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin 46 engine. This produced 1,415 bhp at 3,000 rpm and +16 ib/sq. in. boost at 14.000 ft. But that's not all that is impressive. EE602 completed over 100 Missions including escorting the Flying Fortress ‘Memphis Belle’ back to the English coast after her now famous 25th Mission with 129 sqdn, until she was damaged in a taxying incident and taken off charge.
She started her operational service with 66 Squadron and fought in the Battle of Britain. She also served with 129 squadron and finally 453 (Australian) Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force.

Glorious sight anywhere 😍 but here, at Lakenheath, in the sun? Well a majestic sight. All 3 with wonderful liveries. Then the missing man tribute. Fitting then for the Rememberance of the fallen of WW2, who gave their lives in their endeavours to gift us our freedom. An honour too watch. Great to have this on your C.V. , Lakenheath. Grateful that 3 were flown here for us. Tinged with sadness, spinkled with joy. ❤ No Words ❤ great that 👍
