  • Hello there!
    I made a stop in Sofia, Bulgaria over the coarse of my travels in the last few weeks. All I can say is I wish I had reserved more time for Bulgaria because it seems like an absolutely lovely country. Sofia was clean, easy to travel about in, the food was delicious, the history interesting, and the people friendly. Bulgaria is a melting pot of cultures, you can find Greek, Turkish, Russian, and German influences there. A friend told me years ago that Bulgaria is one of the hidden gems of Europe and oh man was he right! The things that surprised me most about Sofia are the lovely architecture and the high level of English spoken there. Join me for the video and see what Sofia has to offer!

    13:13 - Sorry for the negative experience with the waiter (customer service needs to improve in the country). Must've been some extreme Russophile when he learnt you are an American "agent" 😁 just kidding.
    Sofia actually has 4 main huge parks and you can reach the Vitosha mountain in less than 1 hour by public transport. Many Bulgarians don't realise or appreciate how green the cities are. If you go to almost any bigger town in Bulgaria, you will realise it has its own proper park.
    The young girls were right about the Rhodope mountains, a true blessed gem. Bansko is a tiny digital nomad destination but quite quiet in summer because it's a popular ski resort.
    If you ever reconsider Bulgaria, definitely check other amazing places such as Plovdiv (capital of culture) - an absolute must, medival Veliko Tarnovo (former capital), Ruse (famous with Viennese styled architecture), Burgas, Nessebar, Varna. Vratsa and the Belogradchick Hills and the list goes on and on.

    • @wayfarernick
      @wayfarernick  2 года назад +9

      Generally speaking customer service was ok for me, but Bulgarians are friendly once you start an actual conversation it seems. I will definitely be back to Bulgaria at some point, I actually enjoyed it a lot. I wish I would have known about being able to easily reach the mountain from the city but next time! Thanks for the info! Next time I will give myself enough time to explore more of Bulgaria!

Sofia was founded 6,100 years before Christ and is 8,100 years old, and compared to it, the "eternal" city of Rome, founded in 753 years before Christ, is like a newborn baby.

    Bulgaria is a pretty good country. It's somewhat poor (no one denies that) but it has many beautiful places and the people are ok. Yes, you'll find the occasional weirdo who will be angry for no reason or tell you not to film (also for no reason) but these are the older generations who lived in the Soviet times and they just carry their grumpy and angry behaviour with them lol.

      I like being poor. Recently I decuded to no longer work in offices for other people and began doing painting, drywalls and plastering. I do around 2k levs in 5 days, but when I'm done I lie to other customers that I'm busy so I can rest for 3-4 weeks. Haven't worked for the past 20 days and I'm very happy about it. My parents are sometimes angry that I don't work, but I remind them that working is not obligatory and is part of the socialist past.
      If you think Bulgarian elders are angry you have to speak to some German, Italian or American pensioners... Same story all over the world and I honestly appreciate and understand them totally. If I'm annoyed with people at 30 I can't imagine how annoyed I will be at 80.
      Fun fact - my great grandfather pretended for nearly 10 years that he is deaf so my great grandmother could let him chill more and work less.

      @@wayfarernick nah mate, they just know you aren't buying anything. They've seen thousands of vloggers. Go without a camera and they will still tell you to either buy or move away. Attention span of those folks is 30 seconds and after this you will start hearing "offff" and tongue ticking "ts, ts, ts". It is normal behaviour in every sector as majority of people maintain a low budget lifestyle. For example my favorite donner kebap is not open for online orders. Wgen I asked him why does he make the best donners and does not sell online he told me that he sells 20-30 donners per day which is enough and he doesn't want more customers as it means 2-3 times more work.

    I just went to Sofia for 17 days. Horrible idea! People were miserable and rude. Sofia is the worst city to visit. Also Bulgaria airways cancelled my flight and I had to buy a whole nother flight home. Awful. Never again. At least I ate and drank very well on vitosha boulevard.

      Rude is our national trait. Be sure that every person who was rude with you had an excellent story to tell his/her friends over dinner. Back in socialist times we couldn't be rude or unemployed or homeless so we're now taking best advantage of democracy whilst it lasts. I'm sorry for being so polite whilst explaining the situation it's not in my nature, but RUclips might censor me if I express my true feelings for you. We have 3-4 million immigrants for the last 30 years. Only the thoughest characters can survive the lack of empathy and sympathy in the thoughest corner of a gender-fluid union.

    As a Bulgarian with common sense I advise to not visit Bulgaria.
    As a matter of fact you should avoid it along with RUclipsr,s advices majority of which a paid.
    Almost every other tourist destination in the region is way better, safer, cheaper and you won't suffer from food poisoning...
