How to make bearing mounts from wood - Use bearings in your woodworking projects

  • Ball bearings exist in all sorts and shapes are used everywhere around us. When making more technical projects it can be really nice to use proper ball bearings for the axles and other spinning things. And there are lots of great standard flanged bearings and bearing blocks available to buy. But sometimes, be it for cost savings, looks, learning or to fit your needs better, you just want to make your own.
    I’m making two different types of bearing mounts in this video that both clamp the bearing securely in place. Version 1 is for panel mounting and version 2 is an alternative to a bearing block or pillow bearing.

    As it happens, I have some projects coming up that require bearings. Both are home built belt sanders. One for wood the other for metal. While I knew I'd have to use wood, I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Thanks for the info, it'll be a great help.

      Thanks! that's exactly why I made these. when using some hard wood it can be a very solid alternative.

  • @jeffbeck6501
    @jeffbeck6501 4 года назад

    Not for every application, but very usefull for many, and something you can make and not have to buy and wait for, not to mention go shop for. I think these are very good and the people certainly need some kind of alternative to buying everything from China. It is just a bearing block. Nothing special. But, they are hard to fabricate in a home shop, and to make them out of wood is only useful in certain application, but many around the home. I say good job, thumbs up, and subscribed because of the inherent need for such things. I wished the average person could work in more materials at home to make even better examples, but for most people, wood is the only thing they can do. That's what makes this video important. You could use these all over the place.

    • @Thepracticalengineer

      Thanks Jeff. I'm totally guilty of buying components from China. Its so cheap.. But these are an awesome alternative indeed.

    Great ideas! Thank you very much 😍
    Now, how to make sure the axel stays inside the bearing, without loosening? Any tips?
    *_NOTE:_* I have not used a bearing yet, but intend to purchase two to use on my mitre saw/thicknesser flip top cart. I cannot help wondering though how to affix the shaft (read, 25mm galvanised tube) into the (25mm x 47mm x 12mm) bearing, whilst ensuring a permanent tight fit?
    Any idea?

    • @Thepracticalengineer
      @Thepracticalengineer  5 лет назад +1

      Hey, There are two ways I'd go in this case. You can clamp something around the tube on both sides so the tube with the clamped object cannot move through the bearing. For example fix the tube to the tabletop and then it cannot slide out.
      Or you could screw a piece of wood onto the bearing mount on the outside, than the tube also stays in.
