I realize this topic is a bit old... but I found this vid extremely useful. The explanation was clear and to the point. No wasted footage or words. And no pointless music in the background. Thanks, Scott.
Take apart some old HP printer. They have 8 mm shafts in them, which fits the 8 mm hole in the bearing much more closely than a 5/16" bolt (7.94 mm). This only really matters if you have a shaft that spins in the bearing a lot.
I actually have a few shafts from printers, I've been using them as the handle on T-handles though, they have a nice finish that holds up well to abuse. For use in bearings I imagine you could cut additional e-clip slots pretty easily with a cut-off wheel and the shaft in a slow lathe or drill press . . .

Heh, this takes me back. I discovered skateboard bearings while fixing my son's rollerblade skates when he was about 5. From then on, whenever he or my daughter outgrew their skates, I'd raid them for the wheels, bearings and even the break pads (the last made good hold downs.) Snapped up a few at garage sales or thrift stores. Ended up with a bucket full of them. I started over 20 years ago now, and I've still got most of the bearings and wheels. With just basic cleaning and lubrication they last forever because they were designed resist the forces of skating, while jigs and other uses put a lot less strain on them. One trick I learned. If you need to mount a bearing in a hurry, leave them in the wheel and just screw the wheel to the support. I had a few wheels full of holes that I used for quick prototyping.
Great idea using aluminium tape to shim. In the past I've applied two coats of wood glue to swell the hole, let dry, then a third wet coat as I press the bearing tight into the "socket". Your way is much faster. Dreamcast never die!
Love this. If you were to insert a rod into that last bearing housing you made what would your method be for preventing the rod from sliding through? Perhaps a collar lock?
Hello Scott, could you give me the size of the snowmobile bearings ... it looks like there are two popular bearings, one for an idler and one is a wheel bearing, thanks, Chris
The ones pictured are "Bones" brand but I've used VXB also with fine results. Unless you are building something under tremendous stress I doubt the difference is meaningful. Anything labeled skateboard bearing should be 8x22x7 mm and work as I've described.
I once went to a sports store in mid winter (in finland, so snow on the ground and freezing), wearing hi-vis work clothes from head to toe. Asked for a roller skate bearings. First guy said that they have some in storage, i asked how long it would take to run me some from there. Guy said "time me" and went away. Running. Other clerk had to ask after couple of minutes, that "those bearings arent going to be used on a skateboard or rollerskates.. What youre planning to do?" - Which i answered that i dont know yet, but it will be some prototyping. First clerk got back with two sets, and as those were for rollerskates, there had to be 16 bearings in a set. He asked which one i like more, i told that i'll take both. Less than 1€ per bearing, sold at tens of places in my town and there is one or two real bearing stores that would want 10-20 euros for one and probably wont even sell to cash customers, only to companys.

You're saving my biscuits with that trick with the duct tape. Thanks!
I bought some skateboard bearings a while back but haven't used them. Thanks for the tips in the video. Maybe I'll put them to use soon.
I’ll wrap the 5/16th bolt a few turns with plumbing teflon tape. I’ll make it build into a taper for a press fit on the bearing.
The only video on mounting bearings to Wood. This will be great 👍 for a rotating bit Holder 5" Base ... Thx
This is wonderful - thank you so so much!
Nice explanation. Really cool.

My order record shows them listed as "6004-2RS 20x42x12"
@@ScottRumschlag Thank You!
Very helpful. Thanks mate.
Is it really hard to find metric components in the U.S.? Can they be got online?
Metric is easy to find in US, both in-person and online
Scott can you point me to the Amazon Bearings you buy. thanks

found them thanks

Such a smooth video though.
Lol, "Off to the races"
when you say you have favorite bearings it is not fair to other bearings
Watching in 2023. Bearings were lost in the cleanse. They were deemed racist and thusly abandoned.
