@Elliepopcorn all it takes to learn the proportions and how to apply them is practice of Loomi's (?) method of drawing faces. Just draw them a lot and don't render/leave with a very simple shading, lines are all that's needed
You can find a ton of tutorials online, or can read his book on drawing the head (I heard a lot of positive reviews about it)

I've been watching your youtube videos for a few months now, and I just wanted to say thank you for making these! As a kid I was always drawing something somewhere, and somewhere along the way I had lost that passion, but you've helped me in finding that spark again! You inspire thousands of people every day, and you are truly an incredible instructor and person. I'm getting teary eyes just writing this damned post but it's so important that you know how big of a difference you are making in peoples lives. I don't know if I'll ever be a professional artist, but the joy i've gotten from finding that passion again has truly been transformative in my life. I hope to be able to take your full course someday!
From the bottom of my heart: Thank you, Marc.

And just when I needed it I found this video on my "watch later" Playlist. Thanks for sharing this knowledge🥺❤️ Also, it's not very important but when we express emotions our pupils react as well (with fear they get smaller and with happiness they get bigger) it's a little detail that is usually exaggerated on animation.

I'd love to see a follow up to this with how lighting changes the different expressions. Have found a lot of my art gets very different expression entirely by which position I place the light source. Low angle lighting really does make characters look menacing sometimes when the same expression is a normal smile when lit from above

My method of thinking about emotions are what are they doing to our bodies:
If you are surprised you want to take in as much information in as possible because of the sudden change in atmosphere.
If your angry , your body tenses up....
But later I realize , that it only works on very extreme sensations and feelings so my characters usually look either nothing or world end. So this video filled those gaps in between

It's kind of a fun exercise to draw a dozen rather simple "smileys" with exaggerated expressions (not just typical emotions, but various reaction faces for no better description) and then try to copy those with the face of some character(s) you came up with. The first part of doodling the smileys seems to make it a bit easier, since you're thinking of the features of a desired expression rather than trying to get things right with proportions or other technical details. The challenge is getting what you did with the smileys to fit on the other character while keeping still its traits intact. Can be done for fun alone, but if trying to do it more like a study just block it out on a grid to do side-by-sides.
