This is why the CGI recycling of The Lion King and their ilk fail. You can't make a clear, elegantly rendered expression on such a fuzzy, muddied canvas/face.

I have a natural affinity for drawing characters that look like they think nothing. Expressions are difficult for me. Not impossible, but difficult. That said, I have a very weak visual imagination clarity. My visual library is sizable but I can't even clearly imagine a circle or a square. Just how they 'feel'.

Which leads me to ask help for a problem I have been struggling with for years: Q: When drawing facial features on a character's head, how do animators accurately space these features when the head is turned or tilted? So many books and video tutorials show only a front, profile, or 3/4 view of the head, but they have no explanation of why the facial features should be placed there, and only there. Shouldn't there be a simple mathematical approach? What if I were to draw a head that wasn't in a front, profile, or 3/4 view? Where does the front facial plane start and end, and why? Where does the eye start and end on the front facial plane, and why? How do you know what angle to extend the nose, and why? I could go on and on. I would greatly appreciate your help on this, Mr. Blaise, or anyone else reading this who knows a effective and simplistic approach to placing facial features. I feel so lost :(
The secret that you're looking for is not a mathematical formular. How's that supposed to work anyway? It's simply the fact that the head _(and any part of the head)_ is a 3D structure. Once you are aware of this and you know where on that 3D structure everything _(eyes, nose, mouth and ears)_ is located, you know where and how to draw these parts if the 3D structure is turned and/or tilted in a certain way. *Here's a hint:* Simply steal one of your sister's Barbie heads. If you don't have a sister, get yourself a Mr. Potato Head. Turn and tilt that to any angle, and see how the view changes. *But most important: notice, that all the parts of the face stay at the same place on the head, no matter how the head is turned and/or tilted.*

The head with all its parts is too compact, to draw anything of it in a foreshortening manner. Another example: ball your fist. Look at your fist. Turn and tilt your fist any way you want. Where do you see a need to foreshorten any part of it in a drawing? Exactly - nowhere. Keep your fist balled, but now...stick out your thumb (as a hitchhiker would do). Turn and tilt your fist again. See what I mean? *Now* you have something standing out of your fist far enough, to warrant a foreshortening (depending on the perspective you're drawing, that is). But,...there is no such _thumb-like_ thing in your face to do the same...or is there?
@@resonanceth what I do is simplify the character head into something made of angled plains. As if it was carved from clay using only slashes of a ninja sword. This helps because it's easier to "pinch" bold lines together and move them in a consistent way than it is with fiddly round bits, with unclear dimensions at certain angles. Pinch is what I called foreshortening before I knew the word. When the form is solid and unchanging, perspective lines will "pinch" to a common point. No squishy baby skulls. Keep those common points at the front of your mind.
A group of friends and I tried to show the forest people these expressions... I'm the only survivor.

Changing the shape of the face/head to help express the emotion is a good point, thanks ill keep that in mind.
