Great video! Fixed the problem in about 15 minutes! A couple of tips (at least for my 2010 Accord): 1) The screws don't provide a ground - the platenut in the fixture is plastic. You only need to connect the harnesses back up to test the repair. 2) A stiff 1 - 1.5 inch wide putty knife very easily removes the lenses by pushing in on the lens and gently prying in the center of the hinge end. 3) The assembly must be reinstalled such that the plastic platenuts protrude into the holes in the assembly to make it fully seat. 4) The harness connectors each have small button that you press to release the connector.

One of my lights quit coming on. I searched You Tube. I found this video. I ordered the part (They come in pairs.) for $7. The part arrived 4 days later. Replaced both switches in about 5 minutes. Both lights work, now.
    Thanks for the video!

This works. 2005 honda accord ex v6L. About 3 years ago, drivers side map light stopped turning on on door open or unlock. About 4 months ago, passenger's side suffered the same fate. Both work when pressed.
Test is if map light comes on when pressed but not on door open or unlock, it's this switch. Suggest you replace both.
I asked the dealership for these switches, they could only sell me the whole assembly for $46. I'm cheap.
Bought these, followed a video instruction, about 15 minutes later, both lights fully working - on press, and on door open or unlock. I didn't need to remove the assembly from the wire connectors to replace these switches. After dropping the assembly, I could easily pry off the switches and reinstall the new ones from the bottom side.
One word of caution, be careful prying / pulling the lenses off. Pry / pull straight down. As you can see in the video, the retainer tabs on the lenses look fragile and likely wouldn't tolerate much pressure sideways before bending or snapping. I didn't break any.
Minor gripe - these dorman switches aren't quite as tactile, ie clicky, as the OEM part.

I fixed it by pulling the switch out and reinserting in a few times. Thanks for the details about carefully taking it apart. You likely saved me $100

Your comment helped me out, thank you. It didn't work for me the first time, so after I saw this I redid it again with some contact cleaner and then everything worked.

This worked for me and solved the problem. If it doesn't work consistently the first time you reinstall in, take it apart and do it again. The second time I took it apart, I used some electrical contact cleaner and then put it back together. After this, it worked beautifully. I hope this helps someone else.

I purchased replacement bulbs hoping that would solve the problem. It did not. I found this video and ordered the parts off Amazon and will also replace the bulbs with LEDs while I'm at it. Thank you for your help. When we first purchased the car, one of the lights work and now neither do, so I'm glad I have found a solution.

Thank you good Sir. Went to my local auto parts store while still viewing your video. $20 for a pair of new switches. Replaced them both. So satisfying. It had been out for about two years and always got to me. Exact same symptom as yours. Drivers side. Fixed now. I'm happy. Had I known I would have done this a long time ago.

Hey man, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I just started doing late night deliveries for Uber Eats, and getting things from my car was becoming a real pain because I couldn’t see right away. Always had to turn on the light by pressing it in. This morning, I did this all by myself and I’ve never done a car repair myself as I am quite inapt when it comes to how cars work. The feeling of accomplishment along with the satisfying conclusion, that’s priceless. Thank you so much for making this great video.

Thank you so much for this exceptionally informative video. I have a 2005 Honda Accord that I've had for 10 years now and that light has not worked for at least 7 years if not longer. It has never bothered me enough to spend the money to fix it, though, so I've just lived with it. The bulb recently went out in the side that works, though, so I wasn't getting any light in the front seat when the door was open. That forced me to research how to replace the bulb. While searching for that info, I came across your video, so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered the same switches you have linked in the description and sure enough, my long dead light has now come to life when I open the door. I was surprised by how excited I was about something so trivial. Thanks again for taking the time to make and post this video.

Not only do both of my map lights not turn on when the doors of my 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe are open, the passenger-side map light never turns on whether the doors are open or not. Not sure if replacing both switches will solve this problem, but I'm going to give it a shot.
Thanks Jeff, and to the poster of this video of course.

2006 Honda Accord. Following your great instructions, I removed the switches and as a test, tried swapping the Right switch to the Left position and Left to Right. The switches are identical twins with the terminal markings the same on both. I put it all back together and it works like it's supposed to. I realize this may be a temporary fix, so I am prepared to order a new pair of switches if needed. Thank you, Maximum Tenacity!

Quick and inexpensive fix on my 2011 Accord (a single button was out and the stealership, Huggins Honda, wanted almost $200 to repair it). Changed all the interior bulbs to white LED while I had it opened up. Helpful video...thanks.

I would like to sincere thank you for posting this video. My drivers side map light started working sporadically before it stopped working altogether. I knew it wasn't a burned out bulb, but I tested it anyway and was correct....bulb was good. Knew it wasn't a fuse since the other light worked. Figured it must be a bad switch. Took it to Honda. They gave me a quote of $200. $100 to replace the entire unit including sunglasses holder + $100 for labor. I did some Google and RUclips searches and found your video. I purchased a 2-pack of switches off Ebay for $13. It took me around 15 minutes to replace it. Had a little trouble popping off the light covers because I didn't want to break them. All I needed was a flat head and Phillips screwdriver. Just sat in the drivers seat and got it done! If I had gone to Honda it's a 20 minute drive each way (plus gas) and God knows how long I'd have to sit in the waiting room. Thanks for the invaluable help!

This also worked on a 2005 Acura TSX. All I did was remove the faulty switch and put it back in 4 times. I'm guessing there is some kind of build up preventing a good electrical contact. When you pull the switch out and back in it creates contact again. So the switch is good but dirty. Thanks for sharing this and thanks to the original video publisher for good instructions.

In my case, there was a bad switch that wouldn't click, but the center contact that inserts into the switch body was coated solid with rust. The other contacts were clean and shiny.

thanks for the great vid and it helped me greatly for my problem. add two tips: when you pry out the plastic covers, push up one side and pry the cover from another side (near the middle). when you put it back, the same, push one side up and then push the other side (near the middle). also two screws must be screwed back all the way until tight, otherwise, doom function works but not the map light.

  • @trainliker100

Very helpful. I had yet another surprise. The left switch was no longer "clicking" and the left light never came on. A new switch, at first, didn't help. When I removed the switch and inspected the three contacts that insert into the switch body, the center one was completely coated with rust. The car itself, and other contacts, were pristine. Very mysterious. I sanded the rust off and that, plus the new switch that would now "click", fixed it. Bought a pair of switches on eBay for $9.95 with free shipping.

Good video. 2005 Honda Accord. Didn't have to take fixture all the way out and fight the connector locks on the plugs. Just slid it out far enough to be able to slide out the switch to the side. Used a screwdriver to wedge the switch out the side then slid the new switch in until it clicked into place. (Same for other side if replacing both switches.) Replaced every thing and done.

Thx for explaining the grounding that the screws do. I had some work done on my vehicle and the repair person just one of the two screws and decided to put the screw on the left side instead of the right and it cause the lights to not work properly. Once I change the screw from the left side to the right everything worked great! I watched several videos about replacing and fixing the dome lights and nobody mentioned the grounding that the right screw does.

Thank you for sharing the video. I viewed and fixed the switches by further opening the switch (breaking the four plastic mold) and cleaning and prying the middle prong (negative); then reattaching everything back together. If you don't want to go through that, you can just buy the plastic switches on Amazon for 10 dollars a pair. BTW this is the exact same procedure for Acura TSXs cabin switches as well! You should put "Acura" in the tag so it can show up when people youtube how to repair cabin switches; courtesy lights.

Great video!! I have a 2013 Honda Odyssey THAT had this dome light issue - Dome lights just wouldn't come on even with new bulbs. I took the whole assembly out and then took out just the light section out. I popped out the clicker switches (just pry them out with a small flat screwdriver....if its hard, you are doing it wrong!!). They pop right out OF THE SIDE, NOT TOP. I didn't know if I could find replacement switches since most of the switches said for 2002-2012, mine being a 2013, I decided to just clean off the contacts, rough them up a bit and then make sure the ground screw when mounting back in the car was tight and connected. I then put back in the car, figuring if it didn't work, I'd just buy a set of the 2012 switches. Got it back in the car, put bulbs in and boom...light!! I have a feeling that the connections get bad over time or loose. The switch might not be bad, it just might take the fiddling to get the connections right. So try cleaning and roughing up before you buy the new switches ($15 max for a set). This is an easy fix!! Took maybe 15 minutes. Just take your time and don't pull wires hard. Gentle, gentle. Someone put this in, so you can take it out. Just go slow and don't freak out. The dealership wanted $120 for the whole assemble. The hardest part was taking out the 4 screws for the whole assembly. Two are above sun glass holder, so open it up to get access. Then one on each side of lights. tip towards windshield and slide out. Then remove connector wires.

I took lens off and took small flat head screwdriver -stick it between base and white switch. Push to left so it slides off prongs a little bit. Take contact cleaner and spray it in, then slide switch back and forth 10x. Finally slide it back on all the way. Problem solved. This immediately cured my car which had same problem. Thanks FYI the white switch is component he shows removing and replacing.

This apparently is a common problem with the Honda overhead "map light" system - We have a 2011 Honda Odyssey Tour Elite model and the assembly closely resembles the accord as shown above - Reading all these U Tube videos on this problem indicates, that the great majority of the time , that Changing the Switches fixes the problem ! It worked on our vehicle too !
You can get a new pair of them on E-bay for around $ 7 -------- So thanks to the many who steered me in that direction --------
The local Honda Dealer indicated we would have to buy the WHOLE NEW UNIT ------ I told em " I'll check it out first " !! ----
I will let them know how I (we, counting you guys) fixed the problem !!
Back to the other reasons for my post -
These switches are of flat blade receiver design, that simply snap in, onto 3 flat 1/8 " wide pins - so be very careful when snapping them into place - This snap switch is called a 2 position maintained contact switch whereby the center receiver of it is the common, and the outside 2 receivers alternate either to open or to closed (if checking) from the center one - providing the switch is working correctly.---- OURS CHECKED O.K. AFTER CHANGING THEM BOTH SO THEY WERE NOT BAD !!------ If they are snapping (you can physically feel or hear it) chances are they are working .
What probably happens when the "map lite" system shows irregularities like this, the electrical contact at the blades or at the bulbs for that matter, eventually become slightly corroded and will not conduct the low voltages that are present here !
For 7 bucks though, it is well worth the experience of changing them yourself -

Excellent video. I have had the same problem with my 2005 Accord and 2006 Pilot and seems to always be the driver side map light switch that is faulty. Just replaced both map light switches on my Accord for the 3rd time, along with new LED bulbs, but my driver side light would still NOT function for TWO reasons. First, the brand new LED bulb was faulty. By simply testing it on the passenger side where everything worked fine, I eliminated one problem. Next time I will just do a continuity test on the bulb before installing it. However, while I could switch the driver map light on and off manually, it still did not activate by opening the door. The second reason was more difficult to troubleshoot and is hard to detect unless you completely disconnect the green and grey connectors from the map light unit so that you can have a better look at the pins AND make sure those connectors snap in properly. One of the metal pins that goes into the grey connector was bent so I needed to straighten it out. The reason it got bent was because during a previous switch replacement, I likely didn't install the switch quite right. Not only do you need to make sure that the metal pins line up for the switch BUT there is also a channel from the side that the switch needs to fit into. Turns out that on the driver map switch, there is also some conductor metal that goes below the switch and into the grey connector and that likely caused the pin to bend when I reconnected everything. So if there is some slack in your diffuser when you turn the map light on manually (you will have to press extra hard to get the light to turn on), you probably didn't re-install the switch properly. If I ever have to do this again, I will leave the map light unit out, run a ground wire back to the car, and make sure everything works properly.

great video. in my 2006 pilot the screw certainly does provide the ground but only on the right side. screws were corroded a bit. I wire brushed them and then swapped out the two push switches with two others I obtained from the junk yard. I think I either fixed the problem or am almost there. it's working for now. would be great to get two new switches however I don't think they are available any longer. thanks again.

Great video. I tried swapping the switches and the left side still does not work but the right side does still work. Hmm... That tells me the problem is not the switches. Time to get out the multimeter and check current to the connector on the left-hand side. That'll be another day.

If exactly one is malfunctioning you can try swapping the switches in your dome light assembly; if the problem goes to the other side then you've confirmed that it's the switch. Thanks everybody for your tips and comments, I appreciate them all.

Spare the expense of buying new switches ~ It is more than likely the contact points going to the switche/s. When I took mine out of my Ridgeline, i noticed that the metal is "stamped", leaving burrs on the center tab. Sand, file down the burrs and reinstall the switches. The right mounting screw Is a ground point too.

GOOD VIDEO BUT THE LIGHT COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION IS MUCH EASIER WITH A BUTTER KNIFE. THE LIGHT PRESSED IN TO REMOVE THE COVER WILL POP RIGHT OFF WITH PREASURE DIRECTLY IN THE MID SECTION OF THE COVER. INSERTION REQUIRES NO TOOL. OTHERWISE THANKS FOR THE TIP ON THE SWITCH. I MAY HAVE TO ORDER ONE. IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THANKS
