Wish I had found this vid first. I just ordered the entire map light console unit to replace the same problem this car had. I didn't know you could just replace the two switches. Honda told me the entire console would need to be replaced. They were obviously just wanting me to pay way more because the switches are only about $15.00. Thanks for the video.
One suggestion, before you replace the switches with the Dorman ones, remove the screws that hold the map light unit in place and then reinstall the screws. The screws provide the ground to the unit. My 2009 Odyssey was doing the same thing and before I realized that the screws were acting as a ground to the vehicle, I replaced the switches. I wish I would have tested my theory before hand. I say this because others below mentioned that theirs began to work correctly and believed it was a connection issue. It is worth a shot to try what I mentioned above before spending the $$ on the switches.
I think you're onto something because I noticed screwing/unscrewing seemed to change the ground. I thought perhaps there was a ground wire back there loose but your suggestion makes more sense. So what was the fix, loosen then over-tighten the screws? Also did both ground or just 1? Thanks Gary, great comment!
Those on my 2012 Odyssey are intermittent. When it fails, both functions no longer work. Removing the lens, seems to fix it. Also banging on the housing tends to get them working for a while. I have power to the bulb mounts, so it appears to be a ground issue. Suggestion So?
Thanks for your help, I removed the the switch connections and just brushed them off with a soft toothbrush, switched them to the other sides and now my lights come on when I open the doors. You still save me money because Honda wanted $75. just to look at the problem. I'm grateful for your help and others advise also. Thanks to all!!
This works. 2005 honda accord ex v6L. About 3 years ago, drivers side map light stopped turning on on door open or unlock. about 4 months ago passenger's side suffered the same fate. Both work when pressed. Test is if map light comes on when pressed but not on door open or unlock, it's this switch. Suggest you replace both. I had the same experience with the dealer as Pianodownloads below - dealer could only sell whole assembly for the same $46. I'm cheap. Bought these, followed this video instruction, about 15 minutes later, lights fully working on press, and door open or unlock. My assembly had much longer wire leads meaning when I dropped the lights / garage door opener assembly I had an easier time popping out and replacing the switches. One word of caution, be careful prying / pulling the lenses off. Pry/pull straight down. The retainer tabs on the lenses look fragile and likely wouldn't tolerate much sideways pressure before bending or snapping. I didn't break any. Minor gripe - the switches aren't quite as tactile, ie clicky, as the OEM part.
I did this with 2008 Honda Pilot and fixed it with this video without having to buy any parts! I took out the bulbs, blew on the connections and replaced same bulbs in opposite direction. Completely fixed! The dome lights now turn on when I open the door!! THANK YOU!
Thanks!!! Had the same issue, ordered bulb first but didn’t solve the issue until I saw ur video. Got the switches and also had to scuff off a little oxidation on the connecting blade and now works consistently
My lights worked manually but not when the door was open. As stated below, I simply tighten up the passenger side screw that acts as the ground for the map lights and its back to new. Unfortunately I had already bought the switches but they were pretty cheap so no big loss there.
I've got a 2010 CR-V with very similar dome lights. Currently the drivers side is not working at all via doors or the button. I have swapped the bulbs around which confirms they are both fine and the issue is with the unit/connection. I'll open it up and investigate before spending any money. Thanks for the inspiration. Just a FYI for anyone reading, it's so much easier to get the light covers off if you press the the outside of the button and you can easily get a flat head in the gap on the inside, it just pops out then. I can picture some of the clips getting broken the way it's done in this video.
Let us know how it goes. Also we've learned there's weird grounding on that piece, try tightening the screws firmly so the ground stays constant, good luck
@@cthompson0531 thanks for the reminder, sorted it yesterday morning. I loosened and re-tightened the screw to no avail. What has fixed it was simply nudging the switch ever so slightly to the side. I'm guessing there's some corrosion on the contacts so if it plays up again I'll get in there with so wd40 and give it a clean.
Great video. EASIER WAY-Just a note. I I had same problem. If you take off lens and get small flat head screwdriver you can slide white switch he replaced over enough to spray contact cleaner onto prongs and slide back and forth multiple times. This can be done without removing any screws. It immediately solved my problem. Light comes on every time now
Thanks for your video. I have a comment about what happened during my troubleshooting. For some reason my left push switch didn't work, I decided to try the right one in the lefts. It worked as expected. I then put the left in the rights port, magically it worked. Must have been some poor contact or surface corrosion that simply pulling out and putting it back in fixed. I'm sure this is temporary and will need to be changed in the future, but for right now I do not have to buy any parts. :)
I will give it a try. The drivers side won't work when any door is opened, or by hitting the switch. Take off the cover and it works fine. Put the cover back on it will work for about two days. Bang on it hard enough and it will work for a couple of days. I am thinking more about a bad connection somewhere.
Robert Heinkel you need to remove the covers and see if everything is connected securely. If so then the ground is bad, you’ll need to go in further and fix it, which is not shown in this video. Good luck.
Sadly, my Local Honda dealer wouldn’t sell me the switches alone. They would only sell the entire assembly at $46. I wound up playing with the old switches in my assembly and it turned out to be a bad connection. It works just fine now. Money spent? Zero dollars.
2008 TSX. I had already changed the bulb ...didn't work. Bought the sensors/switched linked below on Amazon. Followed this tutorial and 5 minutes later lights are both working! Instead of the OEM Honda bulb I inserted LED lights instead. Light is much brighter...albeit bluer.
I haved this problem, many times left and i don't know why the light not work. i replace bulbs and the light is not work again. your video help me. Thank you very much!
This looks like the switches just need to be reinstalled to make contact. The right light came on at 0:45s when he jiggled the left cover to remove it but he did not notice it. Both switches are working he tried to test it after the covers are off. Clearly, it is the grounding problem, neither lights would work with the door open because the ground was open. When he reinstalled the screws, the ground is established again enabling the light to work with the opening door switches. The new switches would do nothing if he did not have the grounding reconnected.
Worked great! Works when doors open now. Question tho, before putting new switch in it wouldn’t work when opening doors. But now it doesn’t work when pressing manually. Any suggestions?
One video days LED has a positive & a negative side & you must install it correctly. I cannot see anything showing the + & - on the map light connection. I installed 2 new switches and 2 LED bulbs & all worked great for a moment then failed. I replaced the MEDs with the old bulbs & nothing. I replaced the old switches and tried both kinds of bulbs. Nothing. Even my rear dome light quit. I replaced the 7.5 fuse under the drivers side dash & now the rear dome works. However, still nothing on the map lights. What fid I do wrong? This must go beyond a fuse :( Another person mentioned the same thing. He installed a cheap LED kit from Amazon & now his maps won't work, even after installing a new fuse.
Hi Chris. Do you know what the 3 rubber buttons are for, the ones that have the 1, 2, and 3 bumps on them? I've had my car for years and don't know what these are for, and the owner's manual doesn't talk about them at all.
Stephen Jones those are the automatic garage door presets. The owners manual will show you how to program them and then you can leave the clunky remote at home. Great question 👍
i just replaced both of the switches in my 2011 honda civic. lights still won’t turn on when door opens. i checked the door sensor (works fine) and the fuse (not blown). idk what else to look for?? any suggestions??
Question: do any doors work or none? If at least 1 door works then you need to troubleshoot the inoperative door sensor(s). If none work you need to test at the fuse that you get 12V when a door is opened. If you do, most likely there's a short somewhere between the fuse and dome light. You will need to test the wire at various points between the fuse and dome light to find the short, which will be challenging. It's also possible you aren't looking at the right fuse, good luck
i just realized that the connection is loose somehow. when i put pressure on the switch it works, and then when i take my finger off it doesn’t. frustrating!
@@chrisl496 Is that at the dome light? If so I think I know what's happening - the dome light ground is flakey. You will need to dig into the dome light housing further and either beef up the ground or run a new one and then I think you'll be all set
@@cthompson0531 awesome thats really helpful thanks! right now they work, after i jiggled them a bit. if they start acting up again ill investigate the ground!

Which ones do you need to replace? It depends on the button/switch. You may not be able to remove and replace the individual button, but it probably won't cost much to replace the entire HVAC control face. Check eBay and you'll be surprised how low it may cost, good luck
I have 2005 Honda accord, my door light burnt out and now there is no electricity going to the door light or door jamb switch. The computer always reads the drivers door as closed
I agree, use a volt meter and observe the voltages at the light on all wires with the door open, closed, etc. Then take the same measurements under the steering wheel. You may find 1 wire isn't behaving as it should, from there you can try and find the short in the wire testing at various access points, or just run a new wire instead. You may also want to swap the passenger and driver side switches just as another test. I had a 1991 Prelude that required this - good luck!
