Not $3500-4000 expensive but even more so! That’s at least what most think. It would be a steal in the range above. Hoping to see a more photo-based high resolution camera sooner or later that probably will be cheaper. Hopefully not too overkill, as I already feel the compromises in the a7R IV’s sensor. Currently got the Sony a7R IV, as can be understood, but I might swap it out with a Canon if they play their cards right. The image quality is superb, but I always feel like something is missing. Always fell for the EF lenses and now also the RF lenses. There are only few lenses for the FE mount that I would ever consider getting. Some of them are certain Zeiss Loxia, Zeiss Batis and Voigtländer lenses. And then there is Sigma 14-24mm, GM 24mm, GM 135mm and Planar 50mm f/1.4. I always felt like something was missing when I used Canon, and the same is true with Sony, but that might change with a Sony-like Canon body in terms of features and image quality, but with their usual fantastic ergonomics and great L lenses. At the same point, I really enjoy top grade manual focus lenses from Zeiss and Voigtländer, so I hope that they will join the RF mount. There will always be something missing. If money wasn’t an object, I would probably use 3 different systems just to use some specific lenses and because of the look and feel (look and feel of ergonomics and images) of some cameras and lenses. For example, my favourite ultra wide angle lenses by physical apperance are the RF 15-35mm and the Zeiss Milvus 15mm, but I prefer the more even image that the Sigma 14-24mm produces. I feel like the RF lenses feel even more plasticy than the EF lenses, but it’s probably a part of the shock resistance design. Another example could be the 35mm focal length, whereas I prefer the Milvus 35mm in terms of physical apperance, construction and rendering, but I prefer the 35mm f/1.4L II in an absolute sense. I also like the Loxia 35mm, but in terms of size and weight and also sharpness and color reproduction when stopped down. Probably about the same as the Milvus. Some of the Voigtländer options on Sony FE are also very delicious as the 21mm, 40mm and 65mm. The 10mm and 15mm also seems very interesting, but they are even more so designed for compactness over “optical perfection”. The color reproduction and rendering are nice, though.

Hi Dustin, hope you can help. Since didn't find any 85mm f1.2L EF mount on your channel decide to ask here. In case you have a lens with AF inconsistencies on a DSLR, in this case a 85mm f1.2L II, will this AF inconsistencies continue on a mirrorless camera like the EOS R or RP?
That depends on the cause of the inconsistencies. If it is a matter of focus not being properly calibrated, or less reliable focus on outer points, then that is typically solved on mirrorless. If the lens just focuses inconsistently, that problem will persist.
I'm not sure whether it's been done or not, but I'd make sure that electronic first curtain is deactivated before evaluating this lens' bokeh as it will make your impressions invalid above a certain shutter speed.
I have. It's not hard to reproduce, particularly with this lens : www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4389515 I'm not sure but I believe that some of the shots in your gallery show traces of EFCS degradation, this one for example : dustinabbott.net/wp-content/gallery/canon-rf-50l-samples/Frozen-Morning-14.jpg
I just got mine on Black Friday sale (authorized dealer) and when the lens has to do a big focus adjust, there's a fairly audible "thunk" when the glass elements motion stops. I didn't hear yours doing that, I just heard normal "shhh" sound of the motor moving things. Is this thunk something you hear at all? I may have to exchange mine.
Is it the focus motor sound or the sound of aperture blades opening and closing? It's hard for me to give you too much feedback, however, as I haven't had one of these in hand for four years or so.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin thank you so much for replying. I uploaded a video short of it here. It's a very loud thunk when it finally snaps into focus. It doesn't happen all the time, like small adjustments. Just when it has a do a big adjustment: ruclips.net/user/shortsAZuVtmX6zAo
I’ll leave my comment and RUclips link up for a little bit. The store agreed it shouldn’t sound like that and I got an exchange. But for others who may have a defective lens I’ll leave that video with the sound of the defective focusing motor (or whatever it is). I tried to demo models at two different Best Buys and neither made that loud of a sound.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I mean that it could be made better - the colour imbalance is distracting between the daylight outside the window and the lights illuminating the narrator. Some neutral density would also be useful. Though - there are a lot of viewpoints in the world. Have a look critically at some great motion picture cinematography and how the indoor/outdoor stuff looks.
Hi Dustin, I just got this lens, and I noticed that it is really noisy, seems like the elements are always moving as if trying to focus, even when not actually focusing - wondering if this is normal or I have a broken lens. It takes pictures just fine, but it’s a little disconcerting having the of sound things moving around when camera is on but not in use
It's impossible to diagnose anything seriously like this (over the internet), but I do hear something like this fairly often from people unfamiliar with lenses with floating elements. That's what allows the lens to focus closely and have good close performance.
Dustin Abbott Totally understand...but did you observe anything like that with the copy you reviewed? You don’t find it odd for lens elements to be working and moving even when the camera is at your side? I think I am going to B&H and try some other copies and see if they behave the same. Thanks for your response
Dustin Abbott just to give you an update, I spoke to Canon and they confirmed what you said....and suggested to turn off Continuous AF if it’s bothersome or the feature not needed. Since I am 90% portrait photographer, I don’t need continuous AF. I did turn it off, and the rumblings stopped. I’m a happy camper. Thanks again for your excellent work on this channel. When it comes to Bokeh these new super sharpies coming with an issue: edged bokeh balls the older EF 85 1.2 and 50 1.2 had rounder bokeh balls not that super sharp but mor "emotion" in the over all picture

Canon Rumors is reporting that the new 1DX MK III will have an RF / EF mount (who knows how they are going to do that) so there is a chance going forward mirrored bodies may be able to use this lens.
I can't envision how that would work; the flange difference is significant. It would be more likely that it would be a mirrorless body that could achieve both EF/RF (if possible).
@@DustinAbbottTWI you are right about mirrorless being the platform for this mount, the rumor is that the sensor will move depending on flange / lens, which seems possible.

Pricey, but it is well worth it if you love the 50mm focal length.
Both of those things are true.
I'm not sure whether it's been done or not, but I'd make sure that electronic first curtain is deactivated before evaluating this lens' bokeh as it will make your impressions invalid above a certain shutter speed.
That's true to some extent, though I've actually yet to see a significant difference when testing for that.
I have. It's not hard to reproduce, particularly with this lens : www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4389515
I'm not sure but I believe that some of the shots in your gallery show traces of EFCS degradation, this one for example : dustinabbott.net/wp-content/gallery/canon-rf-50l-samples/Frozen-Morning-14.jpg
I wonder if it worth to pay for RF 50 1.2 instead of Sigma 50 1.4 Art which looks great for its price.
That's going to be up to you. The RF has an extra layer of special beyond the Sigma, but the Sigma is indeed great value for money.
Awesome review
Glad you enjoyed it
Why not do something about that window? Some filtration would certainly help.
??? I'm purposefully shooting in front of the window to give viewers an interesting backdrop.
Thanks a lot.
You're welcome.
Beautiful rendering, beautiful lens, not so beautiful price and weight.....
Pretty much nailed it. Unfortunately you don't often get one without the other.
Does the R focus as fast as the 5DMKIV and Sony A7RIV in low light?
It focuses better, actually. It is sensitive down to -6 EV with this lens attached
Dustin Abbott Nice! Thanks for the reply.
Eos R system is becoming a keeper. I know i love mine...
I think that's true, and hopefully the next body will remove the lingering questions.
That's a good idea. I suspect you will find similar behavior across them, though I could be wrong.
Will definitely look to join your patronage crew.
Amazing lens!!!
For sure.
just great, as always.
Thank you!
Rev. Abbott, it appears your wife is doing a fantastic job shoveling snow..!! LOL! Just funnin' with ya'.!
LOL - it's my son, and I left him about a seven minute job at the end of a 4 hour one...and he's the one that gets to look like he's doing the heavy lifting.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I did realized it was your son, but thought to tease you anyway.. LOL! Just a thought: You might loose the plant as a prop, while we wait for you to knock it off the table, unless you are attempting to hide something from view..!! LOL!
glad to see this, thanks!
You're welcome.
I like the EOS R and it gets cheaper and cheaper. But the only reasonably priced lens is the 24-105. Even the 15-35 being a f/2.8 is more expensiv than what I am willing to pay.
That is definitely the weak link in the lineup. Almost all of the glass is very expensive.
Canon is just doing great with their lens and as a sony shooter I’m a bit jealous! When canon will catch up with their body they will deserve to be the number 1
That could be true, though Sony is really taking off with third party support.
rf 50 or 85 cant decide.
Good news. My review of the 85 comes next week, so stay tuned!
When it comes to Bokeh these new super sharpies coming with an issue: edged bokeh balls the older EF 85 1.2 and 50 1.2 had rounder bokeh balls not that super sharp but mor "emotion" in the over all picture
I'm not entirely sure I agree when it comes to this lens. I thought the bokeh had a lot of character.
Love your videos always honest and accurate. The plant on the table is very distracting.
no its not. It's giving him oxygen.
Thanks for the feedback, though I'm not quite sure why the plant is a big deal to you.
LOL @auomauom - nice one.
@@DustinAbbottTWI So Sorry Dustin. Your content far outweighs the plant 🌱 You do a great job keep up the good work God Bless.
Ordered my eos r for just 1299.
Wait what? $1299? I thought it just dropped to $1599 and I thought THAT was a steal!
No it was $1499 on b&h and on top of that they sent me an email with with a code that helped me with another two hundred dollars. Also it includes adopter . So the camera was really $1199
I'm gonna steal your EOS-R, man
That's a shockingly good price!
I ordered 2 at $1,299! 👍😉
Please , you mentioning dedicated pet eye Af is like Roger Federer mentioning the cushion seats at Wimbledon 🤔
And why is that? For those that take pictures of animals, that's a very important feature.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yes you might have a point there , when you reckon they will bring out fish and bird eye AF ?
N people were saying Sony full frame E mount lenses are big heavy and expensive.. Yea.. I get that it's 1.2L.. But for that extra weight/cost n size... I'm not even sure if that's worth.. 1.4 on 50mm are already working great.. Power to the people tho.
It is beastly in size. The only thing that helps here is that the EOS R has such a better grip than the Sony options that the balance feels more natural.
Wondering if I should sell.my Sigma 50mm Art...
Are you only shooting on R, or do you still have an EF mount camera? That would be my criteria personally.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I just traded my 5D in, The R seems stable and I'm ready
Please do an IQ test against the Sony Zeiss I'm wondering how they will compare.
The Planar? I did do that comparison.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Where? I couldn't find it in your channel
@@DustinAbbottTWI I am just wondering an IQ compare to the Zeiss Milvus 50mil
real life in the background...haha
That lets you know that the background is real ;)
I envy you for the beautiful landscape you live in. And you have snow around Christmas.
If we have snow in northern Germany, it is usually around February when everyone just wants winter to be over.
His Wife doing chores
Thanks for the review Dustin, love your reviews that are straight to the points.
Very good lens, and interested... but RF will bankrupt a lot of Canon photographers! Especially when the PRO R bodies lands.... and Canon is catching up fast too...
You're so right on the price point. So far the RF lenses are "deep pocket" options.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Both of you are on target....new 50/1.8 for Nikon Z is under $500.00 guys...yes, not the same lens, etc., etc...nevertheless, price point is interesting.
This is one lens that would almost be worth switching systems for imo. I can't get over the rendering of this lens it's simply stunning
Thomas Gunn canon has the best glass right now
I know it's insane. I've never been a fan of Canon personally. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me, but I give credit where credit is due and they are absolutely killing it with these new lenses. 😍
It is a fantastically good lens.
Hey Dustin do you think you could do a review of that new Panasonic 50mm f/1.4?
I don't cover Panasonic, so I'm afraid not.
I agree. The bokeh and detail is as close to the otus I’ve seen. Otus with autofocus 😁 kinda
Sam Hartwig yes this and the 85 f1.2 are outstanding! As a sony shooter I’m a bit jealous
Light Yagami I shoot Sony too. RF is amazing
That's pretty close. I think the Otus has ever-so-slightly better chromatic aberration control, but I think the Canon has nicer bokeh.
The Planar 50mm F1.4 is a pretty fantastic lens. Not quite at this level, but it's not a night and day difference.
Dustin Abbott needless to say the RF glass is pretty dang great. How about a RF 200mm f2. That would be amazing
@@devinmillermediawell this rumor didn’t pan out
I'm poor 😭
It is an expensive one!

#DA kindly Review [Tokina Opera 50mm 1.4]
Hi there, unfortunately I don't have a supplier for Tokina lenses. I reached out to them and had a conversation, and they never decided to get me loaners.
Your son wants to go to a university in Florida or something 😀
LOL - he just might.
Can't you pronounce "EOS" the way that canon themselves pronounce it? It makes you seem disconnected.
And how is that? And why is that no one from Canon has ever corrected me in years of doing reviews?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Good question. During their presentations they say each letter separately, E. O. S.
as a chemist, I would like tp point out i am a bit miffed by the north american pronunciation of fluorine.. its flu- or-ine not floor-ine or flower-
ine.. Believe me being sensitive to this gives me cringe goosebumps every time.. Thought it was time to point that out having heard you say that one too many time ;-)
Stick to being a chemist and not an English teacher, because you are incorrect.
And this is the thing that drives me most crazy about doing reviews. People from all over the world complain that words aren't pronounced according to their local preference. I am North American; I speak North American English. If that makes you cringe, you might want to find a reviewer who speaks according to your preference...or recognize that language is dynamic and that there isn't a universally right way to pronounce things.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I never thought you would be so sensitive towards good advice. There are many words pronounced and even spelled differently aluminium vs aluminum comes to mind, but fluorescence is different.. the mispronunciation of it even leads to north american scientists writing misspelling the word as flourescence or florescence in scientific artcles.. That is why i care because it is derivative from Fluor.. And facts matter as I am not a post modernist. Loved living in Canada.. but some things so intellectually lazy
