i think a low light, i mean something like a bar scene or night shot, would be a better comparison since most people needs 1.2 s for low light situations. focusing in lowlight is the real problem most of us have . thanks for the video
I have officially watched way too many comparison videos between the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and the Canon 1.2 EF. In every video, the Canon is always soft or even blurry when shooting wide open. The Canon always has the purple haze, and lens issues despite it's solid build quality. It's amazing to see a cheaper 1.4 take out an expensive and well respected 1.2 lens in almost every test. The Sigma is actually the best overall in this 50mm category. Just look at a Canon EF 50mm 1.4 compared to the Sigma 50mm 1.4. The Canon is older I'll give it that, but the robust size of the Sigma, and the build quality difference is night and day. Obviously there are better and more expensive lenses, but to buy a Sigma 50mm 1.4 used for $500, and have tack sharp images and great bokeh almost every time makes the Sigma a winner for me. This video shows pretty much a tie between a brand new RF lens for more than double the price, and the Sigma 1.4. I have made my final purchase decision (Sigma) based on these findings as well.
Great video! I saw people saying the sigma was just as good as the RF1.8 but I think it is way better. glad to see it works well against the EF as well.
Good comparison. Focus speed for practical use is tricky to measure. End to end whether in to out or out to in is just part of the measure. Keeper rate is determined by the last little bit of focus time in some cases in which it is close for a moving target but not close enough or quick enough. I have both the Sigma 50 ART and the RF50f1.2
Focus is definitely hard to put into practical circumstances since a lot of it is due to lighting. I do what I can though to give an idea of what to expect.
I've rented the EF a handful of times And I haven't had that problem. Now I own it. I've rented the sigma and I thought it was unflatteringly sharp for certain people. I prefer the EF. No doubt the RF is insanely sharp and a great lens. It can wait till it's 1500 bucks before I consider it haha.
I have the RF Adapter to EF with the Drop-in-filters and must say it's just not letting me buy any RF lenses as it is so convenient with the Drop-in-filters. I have the polarizing and the ND Filter as well as the clear one and I love it. No extra filters needed for all the Lenses. Yesterday my EF 50mm f1.4 got stuck on Focus. This lead me here and I need to think about the RF 50mm F1.2 or the Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art 🤔. What would you be choosing? Is the RF really worth it to buy new front filters and all or would you stick with the Sigma if you had to choose?
I've been using the drop-in ND filter recently with no issues. I agree that it makes using filters so much more convenient! Between that and the price difference in those two lenses, I would go with the Sigma without a doubt. 👍
@@rynfilms I actually ordered one yesterday after a lot of thinking 😊. I am not filming yet but who knows, then the drop in filters are even more convenient. You make great videos with good humor. I wish for you to get more followers 👍🏽 😊.
RYN! Great review with terrific specifics! And, I am stoked, because my Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art arrives TODAY!! Your video here really revs me up! Thank you 🙂👍!!
I’ve owned both EF Canon and Sigma. The real thing here is define “better”. Sharper? Less CA? Of course Sigma wins in these departments, it’s very evident but somehow there’s something magical and hard to explain about the image from the 50 1.2L. I just looks nicer to my eyes. I think it all will come down to your shooting style, preferences in look and determine your image. Me, personally,, after owning both, would pick up the 50 1.2L anytime. Many people are so overobsessed with sharpness and perfect lookind glass that may lose that character that the lens has got to it.
I completely get that! I feel the same about my Canon 24-70 f/2.8L. There is just something about that lens thats better, but I can't tell you exactly what. 🥳
You both are tripping lol Sharper is why lenses are made. Isn’t that the reason people with eye problems wear glasses? And then there is auto focus and etc and the sigma again takes the cake even in this video. Clearly the sigma is way better than the rest of the bunch deal with it boys 🤣😂 Love your videos brother 👍
J F you’re mistaken dude. Character is why lenses are made. Take for example de Canon 35mm f1.4L II which is over corrected, way too sharp that the bokeh isn’t as nice as the V1. If sharpness was everything there wouldn’t exist diffusion filters such as the Schneider Blackmagic or Tiffen Black Pro Mist. There’s a purpose for each lens and situation. It’ll all come down to preference, taste, communication through the image, artistic choice. What you described are prescription glasses for your eyes, these are tools for creating. And just to clarify I still own Sigma Art and Canon L glass and each one of those has a place in the creative and narrative process.
I agree with J F. Sharpness is best as long as the color is correct and the bokeh is acceptable. If you want a softer image, you can always de-focus the Sigma slightly, use soft filters, or soften it in post processing. Even though I don't own it yet I would go with the Sigma. Great video, RYN films.
@@rynfilms I'm in the market now to get 50mm. I rented Canon RF 50mm f1.2 and was impressed with sharpness on my R6. I thinking to sell my EF 85mm f1.4 IS L to finance RF 50mm f1.2 but if I get Sigma I don't have to sell my 85mm. 🤔 At the moment I shoot with 35mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4 but my 85mm don't get much use. Decisions, decisions 😅
Maybe I missed it, but what camera did you use for testing? I'd be curious to know if/how it may change with an EOS R + EF>RF adapter. I did end up returning that 6DII for the EOS R yesterday. I'm hoping to get out and get some shots in with it today. The wife is due to pop any day now, so we're running out of time for maternity shots. The only lens I have so far, though, is a Canon 24-70 f2.8 II. I'm considering a Sigma 50mm Art and a Canon 70-200mm F2.8II to round out my set (for the time being).
They were all shot on the R, with the Sigma and the EF lenses using the Canon adaptor. Congrats on the camera and the soon to be kiddo! I also have the 24-70 f/2.8 and it basically lives on my R. I love that combo! 📸
@@rynfilms I guess that stands to reason if you shot with the RF lens...duh. Stupid question. Sorry. I did get out to take some shots with the R and the wife yesterday, but we went a little too early, and had lots of blown out shots unless I closed down the aperture -- even with ISO 100 and max SS. It was just about the golden hour by the time we left, but my "model" was done by then. :) Hopefully I at least got a couple worth saving or that I can salvage in edit. I still have LOTS to learn, but this R is a big step up from the 6DII, and a HUGE step up from the Rebel2 I got for Black Friday. Until the RF lenses come down in price, though, I'm going to stick with adapted EF lenses. Thanks for the vids and responses, and I look forward to future vids. Keep them coming!
Thanks for the awesome review Ryan! Definitely helping me decide to get the Sigma, which is sad cuz the Canon's size is so much more useful. Curious though, (and no shade, cuz you obviously take phenomenal photos!) but were you using autofocus, because if I had taken those L portraits, I would have said I* missed the focus not it* missed the focus. The L portrait of the lady just wasn't lit and posed as well as the other 2, and the portrait of the man looked like it was just focused an inch too far back. Again, love your stuff, and just an honest question.
Thanks! Glad I can help. I was using AF for all these tests. I made sure to focus on the same point with each lens and took multiple photos with each. I guess I meant the lens missed focus because even though I, or the camera, focused on the eye, the focus was shifted back. I suppose if I was manually focusing with a monitor it would have been sharp.
All the time! I actually don't own an RF lens. While they are better quality than the EF lenses, I really enjoy being able to use the EF-RF adaptor with the built in filters.
Nice video. Excellent job. Just yesterday, at The Photography Show TPS/TVS2019 in the UK, I traded in my Canon EF 35mm f/1.2L USM for the Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM. All the while I had the EF, aside from the severe CA when used wide open at 1.2, my images were always soft, and sometimes missed focus. I hope to have a happier time with the RF. I would have loved if you tested at f/1.4 though, to equalise at the Sigma WOA. The most severe CA of the EF is experienced at 1.2 and 1.4. At f/2, it’s almost disappeared. Good job all the same.
I appreciate that! I'm actually renting the 35mm RF for the next few days, excited to check it out! Believe me, there are so many more tests I could have done with these lenses. However I had to narrow it down to a few areas and settings otherwise the video could easily have been hours long!
I love the EF, one of my fave lanses (the fact it's much smaller and lighter is another plus) a lense with character (not many of those around), wouldn't trade it for the others(don't know why you have so much trouble focusing with the EF, on the EOS R I find it very easy , it was harder with DSLR's)
@@rynfilms no, not necessarily the EF lens. I had an EF 50mm 1.2 and barely used it due to focus inconsistencies that I felt didn't go hand in hand with the price. In contrast, the RF 50mm 1.2 cleans its clock, but it may be partly the body too.
RYN photography gotcha Maybe the lens needs to be calibrated to the body? I know you can do micro offset focus adjustments so the camera can pull the correction accordingly. That’s the thing with lens’s haha so many variables. Great review though man! I’m a big canon pro glass only user. But not switching to a mirrorless till a 5D equivalent comes out. Then I’ll get that rf haha. In the meantime that sigma looks good especially for the price. For something that I’ll eventually sell down the road.
I’ve had the sigma for the last three years and used it intensively professionally on R6 and R6mkII (events, portraiture), I think I shot 3/4 of my work with this lens. What I liked: it’s sharp, and it takes advantage of the quicker FPS burst on these cameras like any other more recent EF and RF lenses. And that was it. What I didn’t like: it disables IBIS both in photo and video, and you have to enable it via menu when switching lenses, unless the lens has its own IS switch. It came apart in two occasions, while on the job. Luckily I could manage to get my hands on some tiny Phillips screwdrivers and got it back together: build quality, not so good. And it’s heavy and bulky. It is over corrected, meaning that the images look very clean, sharp, no vignetting, no fringing, yet very, very flat, no matter how good the light is. So I got rid of it and replaced it with a EF 50 1.2: I’ve been hesitant for months, having read and seen so many bad reviews. I had rented it on a job a few years ago (in studio portraits), and liked it a lot. A friend of mine has one and I borrowed it a couple times recently, and liked it a lot, again. I don’t know if I got lucky, but my current unit is surprisingly sharp at any aperture, yet very much three dimensional. The images it delivers look longer in focal length than it really is, full of detail, the out of focus areas are creamy and the separation is there even when stopped down. Color rendition and overall image quality is homogeneous with my other more recent EF-L glass (100macro, 16-35f4IS), a lot more pleasing than the sigma has been. Your sample looks either faulty, or the way you compared them didn’t do a good enough job to put things into perspective.
Definitely the Sigma is the best bang for the buck for this price range, it is a great lens! Let's face the facts though... the real winner here was the cowbell LOL
I have the Sigma 85mm f1.4 and it's one of the most amazing lenses I've ever shot with. The 50mm Art is looking pretty astounding as well. Forget the 50mm RF 1.2. Overpriced and I couldn't tell the difference from the Sigma 50mm Art. Canon RF lenses are WAY overpriced for what they deliver.
Hey man, good video. I have been using canon 50mm f1.8 stm and now I got myself sigma 18-35mm f1.8 (Im an aps-c user) and I noticed that this sigma lens is sharp as hell and beautiful bokeh. I have been so far satisfied with my canon 50mm but now I feel that I should upgrade this to sigma 50mm f1.4! Is it worth the upgrade in your opinion?
If it's a lens you use professionally, or don't mind dropping the $$$ on, then yes!! It's such a great lens. If you're just using it for fun or for IG, then the Canon lens is probably all you need.
i found a used sigma 1.4 (one year old) for 490 Euro on ebay. Looks like a new one. perfectly sharp. Very happy with this lens. especially for that price ;-)
which body did you use for the Canon EF and Sigma Art EF? Canon DSLR? That's why you have a misfocus on 50mm f1.2 EF. I'm using the Canon 50mm f1.2 on Sony A7iii (mirrorless) and focus is always spot on :)
I have a EF 50 1.2L. But its focus it not quite accurate enough when I am using 5D4 with focus point. But if I use Live view mode to focus, it is quite accurate actually. And when the subject in focus, there is not much purple fringes, it becomes a amazing lens. In most case when using DSLR focus, when you think it is in focus, but actually it is not. It may be better when use a mirror less focus mode. The benefit of EF 50 1.2 is lighter. RF and Sigma is quiet heavy. And for portrait, I don't need so sharp or many pixels. EF is easy to work with in this case. If you have an EF, notice the focus.
Great video! So happy you tested the autofocus speed also. I am getting the R5 and your review pretty much solidified my decision to get sigma art lenses. Will you be doing a review of the R5?
hey man, im trying to increase the production value of my videography work. I'll make the money back in two jobs or in one of my website design. I'll just go with the RF. It's not like you lose your money. They hold their value and sell quickly on ebay. < -- this is my rationalizing the absurd amount of money im about to spend hahaha
@@rynfilms I'm saving a portion of all my jobs to buy it. Definitely worth it. I take care of my gear and never use it in dicey environments. And you know what? my birthday is in a couple days. Why not treat myself?

Clean comparison...... Hope you should do it with canon r's adapter
I’m still waiting to try out the adaptor with the built in ND filter!
Definitely the Sigma is the best bang for the buck for this price range, it is a great lens! Let's face the facts though... the real winner here was the cowbell LOL
Just not me playing the cowbell! 🤣🤣🤣
@@rynfilms Playing was fine... it was the song that killed the skit LOL
i got the sigma 50mm 1.4 art for 700$ Canadian dollar.
would i like to spend 3450$ CAD for the rf? hell no.
Good deal! That Sigma is a nice lens. 👍
I'll have to give the 85mm a shot someday.
👍
This was vary helpful thanks
You're welcome Chris!
Nice job, Ryan. I only had the nifty 50 when I shot Canon. Wasn't the best, but it got the job done. :)
Were you using the 50 1.8?
I ordered the EOS R a few days ago.... do I need the adapter for the Sigma?
Unless it's an RF mount, you'll need an adaptor
i found a used sigma 1.4 (one year old) for 490 Euro on ebay. Looks like a new one. perfectly sharp. Very happy with this lens. especially for that price ;-)
What about the sigma 40 art? Is it better than the 50 one?
I haven't used the 40. So I can't say for sure. 🤷♂️
whts the camera that used... is it same camera for the all 3 lenses?? canon eos R?
Yes, all the test shots are on the EOS R. 📸
@@rynfilms Great video! Were you using an adaptor so that you could use the Sigma and Canon EF on the EOS R?
"What is goin' on" is the opening phrase used by
Ben Horne... Much better than McKinnon's "Pwuts Up..!! Or is it "Putz Up ..??
Oh man, I haven't watched one of Ben's videos for a while. There is so much good content it's hard to keep up!
@@rynfilms I agree, as Ben, at times, can lull me to sleep.. But, some of his technical reviews are worth staying awake for..!!
Just bought the EF Canon 50 1.2 for just 750€ near mint...MAGIC LENS
I'm pretty sure I had a bad one...😕
same here. The lens is indeed a bit soft (and I like it), but it does not miss focus.
which body did you use for the Canon EF and Sigma Art EF? Canon DSLR? That's why you have a misfocus on 50mm f1.2 EF. I'm using the Canon 50mm f1.2 on Sony A7iii (mirrorless) and focus is always spot on :)
It was all shot on the EOS R. I think the 50 needed to be recalibrated.
I’m sure getting pretty sharp images on the 50mm ef. Don’t know how you use it. And yet it has a lower stops, better low light and all.
I think the canon I used was out of calibration. 🤷♂️
Are you using AF when in live view?
Fellow banjo player!
Trust me, I'm not that good. But it's fun! 👍
@@rynfilms same haha!
High quality lenses is 'more better correct' (LOL!) than '"Very quality lenses" ...
Hey, you know, sometimes it just comes out wrong and you don't catch it.🤷♂️
@@rynfilms Must be 'stage fright'. LOL!
Thanks for being a good sport....
Great video! So happy you tested the autofocus speed also. I am getting the R5 and your review pretty much solidified my decision to get sigma art lenses. Will you be doing a review of the R5?
Awesome! When I'm finally able to get my hands on the R5, I have some content planned for it. Keep an eye out!
RYN films can’t wait!!
Seems the ef has 20 years on the other try brand new out of the box like the other two
The canon EF is not missing focus, it just isn’t sharp, no matter the f-stop.
Not really. If you look at the samples there is a definite sharp spot in the image that is very close, but not where it should be
hey man, im trying to increase the production value of my videography work. I'll make the money back in two jobs or in one of my website design. I'll just go with the RF. It's not like you lose your money. They hold their value and sell quickly on ebay. < -- this is my rationalizing the absurd amount of money im about to spend hahaha
Lenses usually hold value really well. Also treat it nice and it might be the last 50 you need to buy. 😉
@@rynfilms I'm saving a portion of all my jobs to buy it. Definitely worth it. I take care of my gear and never use it in dicey environments. And you know what? my birthday is in a couple days. Why not treat myself?
Second 37 to second 39
What can I say, I'm not perfect.. 🤷♂️
Le foto scattate con EF sono piú belle
I just saw my answer on another comment.... Thanks...
Glad you found the answer. 👍
canon is the best
They make a pretty solid lens.
I gif the Canon 50mm. F1.1L and I paid £490.00 second Hand and is boxed and in good condition
Not sure what that translates to in USD, but it sounds like a good deal!
Your eyes reminds me of the "IT' clown haha.
Well then..
Worst lens review EVER!!!!
Best comment EVER!!!!!
Who tests CA at F2? lol
