Returnal isn’t really much of a stress test unless you turn on RT at which point what are you trying to prove by comparing it to a non-Nvidia device? Even most mainline Nvidia GPU’s can’t properly run RT as it becomes overwhelmingly CPU bottlenecked unless you’re rocking a 4080 or higher.

I think the SFF would be heavier. The SFF would be around 5Kg. The Dell Precision 3240 Compact is 1.72Kg. Also the dimension is like 2 dell optiplex 7050 Micro stacked side by side.
You made me buy a SFF Optiplex back in December last year and while I am happy with it for my retro gaming needs, I kinda wished I didn't, so I could build this one instead. Oh well, nice video and I am looking forward to the STEAM OS build with this PC.
This one is MUCH more expensive than your Optiplex though. With these SSF PCs, Acer Veriton N series miniPCs are worth considering - they have full size PCI-E x16 slot under the cover. (they have attachment for plugging in GPU but unfortunately I have never seen any for sale separately... not a problem 3D printing one tho)
Great find as always. Keep in mind that your RTX A2000 is PCIe x16 generation 4 (16 Gbps), and the Intel Gen 10 is gen 3, (8Gbps) and only DDR4. The Dell Precision 3260 is a 12th gen i5 with DDR5 memory that is being sold as low as $600. Same case. A better deal is to find a system with a 11th gen Intel which has gen 4 memory. Keep in mind you have to make sure your riser is gen 4 certified. Don’t think you can get by with gen 3. I tried with two different riser cables, one of hight quality and even a 3cm PCB vertical riser - none worked until forced it to gen 3. PCIe 4th gen riser cables start at $40. I did get better results, especially after replacing the heat conductive foam with a copper shim plate. You can also change out the shunt resistor with a lower value to increase the 75W limit and solder a 12VDC power cable to a 12VDC source and ground to push A2000 further with MSI Afterburner. 8000 points in 3D Mark is doable without it exceed 80c. PS the foldable M6/RX6400 is almost done. Still working out the folding hinge design. 3D Mark graphics score of 3422 (sadly the n5150 CPU score was a piddly 1568). Still it beats the Ryzen 6900HX with over clocked DDR5 memory. To bad the company behind the M6 didn’t have the foresight to add to M.2 PCIe slots. In any case runs “Stray” 1080P, 60fps high settings and “Dead Space” 2023 at 1280P, 60fps at almost all high settings. More than enough to meet my limited gaming needs. Even better works great over Sunshine/Moonlight.
Hi, if i were to solder a 12VDC power cable to the source, can i use a 6 pin power extension cable? And can i use any of the 6 wires in the cable? And should i remove the other wires?
The gen3 will not hold back an a2000 whatsoever. A 4090 barely saturates a pcie 3.0 slot. A gpu is not pcie generation specific, the only thing you need to pay attention to is how many lanes the card utilizes (ie the 6500xt on a 3.0 slot).
@@jurpo6 Actually compared PCIe 3 & PCIe4 with I5 10th gen & 11gen and there is about 8-10% improvement with PCIe 4th gen x16. The same holds true with the AMD RX6400, especially since it is only uses 4-lanes and the faster clock improves its performance too. Again were are looking at 5-10% if that. Right now when doing PS3 emulation, it'll jump up to about 80c. Hoping to get that down to the 60's with some other things I have on the way. Thanks for the demo!
I would not recommend this series of dell desktops, I work in IT in a business that exclusively uses dell. Can confirm. This was a Precision but Optiplex are similar in terms of durability. I'm using a 4th gen 3020 SFF to type this. Bought it refurbished over 3 years ago when it was off-lease and thus 3 years old already, and still running strong. Bought it with i5-4590 and 8GB, 320GB HDD. Upgraded it to 16GB, GT 1030, 240GB SSD (later upgraded to a 1TB SSD with DRAM cache), 4TB HDD, PCIe SATA host adapter so I could keep the DVD, NetGear A6100 USB WiFi, not necessarily in that order. Runs every game I've tried at least passably. Looking at an RX 6400 for it's "final" upgrade, unless I can also find an i7-4790 (or similar Xeon with iGPU for the QSV) for cheap.
This thermal paste replacement stuff is always fun in my eyes. Had a i5 3570k watercooled undervolted and overclocked running for 10 years with the same arctic silver 5 paste. When i removed it finally cause the watercooler had to go the paste was surely a bit goe but aside of that provided for 10 years the same temps. So i guess it´s not really that important unless you choose to go with the cheapest gunk you can find.
Found an Core 2 duo E6850 with an MSI p7n diamond and with Asus Orbe cooler in the university storage today. Turn it on with an ssd and stress test it, didnt passed 55 degrees. When changed the paste (it was dry) it went to 53. So, they used a good one.
@@DanielGT_93 Which is arguably even more impressive. As in my case the system was running pretty much daily for hours. In your case the system ran at one point and then the parts have been shelved for god knows how long with no heat applied i´d assume the effect on the paste would be even worse over the years. But 2 Degrees? That is within tolerance and/or duo to a bit better paste now being used. So in the end, changing paste is irrelevant, at least if you used proper paste to begin with.
I have one of these with a 6 core Xeon W-1250, 16gb RAM, and a 6gb Quadro RTX 3000. It is a solid machine. Best part of these Dells will be when all the companies that lease these have those leases end, ebay gets flooded with some nice cheap hardware.
That's basically when you should buy these, My nearest pc hardware building (that buys bulk from the states these de-commissioned units) still has them for $600-$700 which is crazy because the 8th Gen Lenovo thinkcentre mini pc's can be had for as little as $200
I have that exact computer. You can toast bread on this thing it gets so hot. I have a GT1030 in it lol didnt realize there was something better i could have put in it.. thanks a ton!
i did the same but adding the a2000 to hp elitedesk 800 g4 sff which has i7 8700 (about the exact same performance as 10500) though a slightly bigger case. i do plan to make a video on it with upgrades of ram adding wifi and Bluetooth card and maybe a new cooler too if I manage to make it happen. i will be starting a new channel since my last one got hacked and coudln't recover, but I am loving the small PCs same as you do which is why I subscribed a while ago and keep watching most of the old and all of the newer videos you make, great job
Can you add a more detailed video of how you got the a2000 to fit? I have an A2000 and that same single slot quadro single slot bracket, but it DOES NOT screw onto the A2000. I’d be fine with cutting my machine, but I can’t figure out the bracket lol..
I am also running into a similar issue too, seems that the Quadro brackets aren't long enough as the A2000 attachments points are a bit deeper in the card. Going to try this but seems the only way to do this if you want the card to be secured to a bracket is to buy the 2-slot low height bracket and cut it down with a rotary tool.
I bought this over an Optiplex (and I love the optiplex series) bc of the 128gb of ram capacity. Also got the 3050 bc I want to game sometimes. This will work till I spend the money to build a deckstop in the next few years.
I'm making an AI Workstation for my start-up company and I need a professional GPU for all the cuda and tensor cores and I've been looking at the low profile A2000 for a while, ordered it thanks to this video in the 12gb vram variant since machine learning reqires large vram amounts and can't wait for all the other parts to arrive next month. Pairing it with 64GB ram and i9-13900 so I can make some future GPU upgrades if needed. Building mine in the NZXT H210i ITX case
My build features a Dell D756 with i7 6700, 16GB DDR4, RTX A2000, 256GB M.2. SSD, 3TB HDD for about 300€ (330 USD). It uses about 180 watts of powerage. I am very happy at the moment. Next buil will go with RTX 4000 SFF if prices drop on a significant level.
it's my kitchen laptop but it's a 10500h and a 1650 msi lets you overlock it by 100 then 500 on the memory it's perfect for everything i've used it for. Mainly photo editing, I added another 1tb ssd into it and then 8gb of ram so it's duel channel. 670$ for something I can play game on is perfect. My fav thing about it was adding the extra memory. I've been on 32gb on the main pc for so long I can't imagine only 8. also the 6 cores and 12 threads helps cemu and ps3 as far as I can tell. the extra threads really helped out my overall lows to the 50s.
Imagine that performance in a handheld with enough battery power to last for 8 hours. Probably possible in 2123. But just imagine what kind of mini pc´s you could buy if laptop hardware would be modular. Heck you would have no issues fitting a 4090 mobile into that build.
Interesting build re: repurposing the 3240. I5 10500 performance similar to a 4750G build (not advocating an AMD in a Intel mobo) with a comparable GPU, but the AMD build would set one back more. Surprisingly a 4-core 4770K struggles to keep up but makes a valent effort. The A2000 is certainly a nice SFF GPU given the space available and have come down appreciably in price. Nice! Thank you.
I think that temperature can be fixed by putting non office PC fan and different radiator. Maybe even cut the hole for bigger radiator, so fan can be outside like in old american car ;)
I think your video pushed the prices through the roof! Id rather just buy a 6900HX or a used gaming laptop... Not because its a bad build, ITS AWESOME... but apparently these parts are in high demand now.
3 questions: Can I use another model of the precision? Can I use another graphics card that can fit? Would this be better than a mini forums pc? Thanks for any help. I am really interested in building a budget mini pc and this video came into my FYP
by the time you factor in the storage, gpu, memory and hassle you're better just getting a mimi pc from Ali Express. I got one 3 years ago with I9-9880h and a gtx 1650 for 700 USD and it game with RAM and 512 gb NVME SSD. Nowadays a 12-th gen with RTX 3050 is abot 800 USD barebone, it's way smaller, way quieter.
I was able to improve the heat situation a bit on my i5-10500 system by getting the larger CPU heatsink / fan combo directly from Dell. Part number FKGPC for the larger fan and KJ6KH for the heatsink. I think this heatsink / fan combo is intended for the higher wattage CPUs, but worked great with my i5-10500. There just doesn't seem to be any way to add a case fan in this small system.
Great channel watch quite often. If you put a graphics card that needs 6 or 8 pin power would a dell 230 brick plug right into the card? Then it would be two separate power supply?
Is it just me? I having a hard time finding the model you are working with. I see tons of the 1U models. But, I hardly see any of the ones with the 2U chassis?

Dell Optiplex computers are underrated. I have been using one as a media server for 10 years now and it's still running.
I'd definitely love to see that steamos setup!
@@snakeplissken1754 The room it was found was closed, no air in or out, i suspect that made it last.
110% cool 😎
Thank you Eta.
Kindest regards, neighbours.
This looks like a nice little box. I'd use it for MIDI rather than gaming, but I appreciate this channel.
I have one of these with a 6 core Xeon W-1250, 16gb RAM, and a 6gb Quadro RTX 3000. It is a solid machine. Best part of these Dells will be when all the companies that lease these have those leases end, ebay gets flooded with some nice cheap hardware.
That's basically when you should buy these, My nearest pc hardware building (that buys bulk from the states these de-commissioned units) still has them for $600-$700 which is crazy because the 8th Gen Lenovo thinkcentre mini pc's can be had for as little as $200
The ebay link isn't right. The results of that search are Dell Optiplex 3240s which are completely different because they're all in ones.
I have that exact computer. You can toast bread on this thing it gets so hot. I have a GT1030 in it lol didnt realize there was something better i could have put in it.. thanks a ton!
This is crazy good! Thank you for that
100% would like to see SteamOS and the RX6400!
tbh the RX6400 could be paired with something cheaper/older than a 10th gen... ijs
Great video. I love the things you come up with. I would really like to see a video with the steam OS. Hope you do that one soon.
Rtx A2000 costs around 700 dollar at my local seller. Crazy
i did the same but adding the a2000 to hp elitedesk 800 g4 sff which has i7 8700 (about the exact same performance as 10500) though a slightly bigger case. i do plan to make a video on it with upgrades of ram adding wifi and Bluetooth card and maybe a new cooler too if I manage to make it happen. i will be starting a new channel since my last one got hacked and coudln't recover, but I am loving the small PCs same as you do which is why I subscribed a while ago and keep watching most of the old and all of the newer videos you make, great job
I really like these kind of form factor. I just wish the parts were more accessible and cheap.
Can you add a more detailed video of how you got the a2000 to fit? I have an A2000 and that same single slot quadro single slot bracket, but it DOES NOT screw onto the A2000. I’d be fine with cutting my machine, but I can’t figure out the bracket lol..
I'm looking at the same issue right now. I'm beginning to think that's why we didn't get to see that part of the re-assembly...
I am also running into a similar issue too, seems that the Quadro brackets aren't long enough as the A2000 attachments points are a bit deeper in the card. Going to try this but seems the only way to do this if you want the card to be secured to a bracket is to buy the 2-slot low height bracket and cut it down with a rotary tool.
love it,, what a great little performer.
Awesome device! I wanted to bay Precision, but it is expensive . Finally I bought Optiplex 7000 on i7-12700T. Thanks for video.
Wouldn't you want to show 2077 after changing the fan setting?
I wasn't impressed with this until you said "not using resolution scaling". That's actually very good performance then.
Amazing PC I loved it's like a cute little dragon 🐉 with the a power of Godzilla 👌
Holy moly the 12GB A2000 is $1200aud!
Thanks doood just what we needed to know 😊
Great video. As usual! Thank you.
My build features a Dell D756 with i7 6700, 16GB DDR4, RTX A2000, 256GB M.2. SSD, 3TB HDD for about 300€ (330 USD). It uses about 180 watts of powerage. I am very happy at the moment. Next buil will go with RTX 4000 SFF if prices drop on a significant level.
i was able to snag a dell 3070 for $140 in my area, i5 9500, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD. Pretty good deal
it's my kitchen laptop but it's a 10500h and a 1650 msi lets you overlock it by 100 then 500 on the memory it's perfect for everything i've used it for.
Would this work with the 4060 LP? An update would be nice.
Can you put the 4060 low profile in this?
Which is a better frontend for emulation? Batocera or Bigbox, which one should I use? Great content by the way, keep up the work
I dunno. At this price you can get a Nuc 9 Extreme and an RX 6600 XT that will give you a lot more performance without being much bigger.
Imagine that performance in a handheld with enough battery power to last for 8 hours. Probably possible in 2123.
But just imagine what kind of mini pc´s you could buy if laptop hardware would be modular. Heck you would have no issues fitting a 4090 mobile into that build.
You should adapt a fan so that the graphics card and processor fans can catch more air.
If you could add an 8 pin somehow running a lp 4060 would be kiler. But hey if a a2000 fits a low profile 3050 should fit
Figured it out there’s a ribbon cable sata just get a sata riser they sell and get one of those skeeeetchy sata to 8 pin adapters and enjoy your fire
@@GotrekGurninsson will be attempting this soon. Getting parts now.
Good video!
Please, make comparison with 1650 low profile and A2000 =)
If u cap the fps to 60 the temps would be good for gaming
Does the GPU run in 16x or 8x with that riser?
Do you think the new 4060 lp will fit?
Can you do a long form video of taking it apart and putting it back together?
Great video, a Steam OS test would be great
Interesting build re: repurposing the 3240. Nice! Thank you.
I would like to see SteamOS and the RX6400! I absolutely love seeing SteamOS builds and the comparison to windows.
That's a nice build
I think that temperature can be fixed by putting non office PC fan and different radiator. Maybe even cut the hole for bigger radiator, so fan can be outside like in old american car ;)
custom heatsink + larger blower fan , should be cooler given that its a ton of space available
I think your video pushed the prices through the roof! Id rather just buy a 6900HX or a used gaming laptop... Not because its a bad build, ITS AWESOME... but apparently these parts are in high demand now.
I might want to cut a big hole at the side panel and put a big fan there LOL.
One of these could make a great pfsense box because of being able to use a true pcie nic.
I really have a thing for sff machines, that one is just mad smol
Why was Emulation not tested???
Id love to see battlefield 2042 tested, ive been wanting to build something small for so long and this looks promising
Please, could you add emulator's test? That'll be terrific, thank you
3 questions:
Can I use another model of the precision?
Can I use another graphics card that can fit?
Would this be better than a mini forums pc?
Thanks for any help. I am really interested in building a budget mini pc and this video came into my FYP
That's a micro system amazing
Very interesting. Have worked with a lot of Tiny pc's but never seen a two story model with space for add-in discrete graphics.
When we finally can game 60 fps 1440fps with these small factors I'm sold and forever set lol
Nice. may have to check this out.
I'd like to see this setup run a local LLM
The 7040 series Ryzen chips gonna make that discreet gpu obsolete. Will make mini PC's ludicrous.
Rtx 2000 and 4060 are still way more powerful
for a small pc you can sure cook an egg on it with those temps
by the time you factor in the storage, gpu, memory and hassle you're better just getting a mimi pc from Ali Express.
I don't know how to mount this bracket what to put on one slot because they have shorter screw holders. Such a design of these quadro.
Super film👍
Perfect LAN PC.
Kinda wish you showed this step by step still a great built tho
It's like a mini optiplex sandwich.
What about ChimeraOS? I was hoping you'd have more coverage of it. It should play with nVIDIA a lot better than holoiso does.
seconded, i want a tutorial on dualbooting it
Dann this Dell precision is expesive😢 i love you Build!
Great channel watch quite often. If you put a graphics card that needs 6 or 8 pin power would a dell 230 brick plug right into the card? Then it would be two separate power supply?
I wonder if could be upgraded to an i7 cpu, and undervolt it to make it run cool and on the same wattage
Is it just me? I having a hard time finding the model you are working with. I see tons of the 1U models. But, I hardly see any of the ones with the 2U chassis?
Do you think, you can fit A2000 with n3rdware single slot cooler inside? Without any trimming to the case?

Avg. gaming at 134 watts whilst at the same time, (only) 43 watts while running cyberpunk? I know those tests you do are the "worst case scenario" kind of situations, but uh... that doesn't make sense.
Combined system power. In Cyberpunk you see two different power draw readouts, one for CPU and one for GPU. It was over 100W combined.
@@Berserkism Oh...whoops. Thanks for clarifying.
