I grew up in New Zealand and remember many different interior design styles in the 90s. Definitely recall the sponge-ing and stencil, but also remember bold single-colour paint jobs, and that oh-so-necessary "feature wall" that was a pointedly different colour from the other walls in the room. Much Baroque and Tuscan influence, dried flowers, draped fabric, golds, deep reds, warm colours, lavender flowers, "deconstructed decadence", French rustic touches, and hardwood floors. I aspired to the more minimalist trend of off-white plasterboard, large tiled atriums, skylights, mezzanine floors, generous patios, and the newly-birthed realtor selling point: "indoor-outdoor flow". I was also fond of the style-blending and grunge-tingled aesthetic in graphic design, throwing mixed fonts and patterns at each other. Much fun.

I remember it all, we still have our VHS player and many tapes. We also still have our light oak entertainment center but the newer tv's won't fit, they are too big. Another video that I found very entertaining. Thanks again, Rhett for the blast from the past!
Hi Rhett 🙋🏽. Looking back at the 90's seem so long ago to. I guess because I'm older and I remember all of the things that you showed. And I still use the sofa and chair covers with the fringe At the bottom ‼️😂😄😅🤣😆😄😂🤣 LOL. Even though it's not that long ago, it feels really nostalgic to me .Thank you for inviting me to watch your video ‼️ have a wonderful weekend ‼️👍🏽😃👍🏽
Lol windbreaker outfits..we called them swooshies because of the sound they made when you walked 😆 One winter in the 90s we had a pretty bad ice storm and you could just put on your swooshies and fly down a hill no sled needed 😂
Illegal raves, dropping acid and E's, going on joyrides and ramraids, paging your dealer from a payphone so the feds couldn't bust your man, bootleg tobacco, pirate VHS tapes and PS1 games, bustin payphones for Arcade change, evading the fuzz by going through the park and then down the BMX track where no-one could possibly catch you. Yep, the 90's were the place to be as a teenager.
I can’t believe out of all the gaming consoles, you neglected to mention Sega Genesis. I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog was HUGE! I honestly don’t even remember Sega Saturn sold at any of the stores I shopped at. At least it didn’t have a playable display at any of the stores that marketed the other mentioned consoles.
The Sega Genesis was the underdog video game console. It secured 55% of the video games market at one point. The Sega Saturn was a flop outside of Japan 🇯🇵. It was released too early with a surprise launch which pissed off KB Toys so much that they refused to sell it ever since only stores like Toys R Us and Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s (later merged into GameStop). After about 3.5 years the Sega Saturn only sold about 9 million units. I do remember playing Daytona USA on Sega Saturn display kiosks at Toys R Us. All of my friends and I had either a PlayStation and/or Nintendo 64.
I'm a 90s kid who never made the transition to 3D. Still prefer playing 2D games to this day. I remember NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis being hugely popular well into the mid 90s. My first introduction to 3D was Doom on PC and its legion of imitators which I liked well enough, but it doesn't quite scratch the same nostalgic itch.
It's so funny that a lot of these things I didn't necessarily associate with the decade but totally were. As always, many great memories were unlocked!
Same here! I felt like my mom was the authority on decorating and making our house look so nice. Now I realize that it was the same look that everybody else had at the time and, even though I don't decorate that way, I never even noticed that the style left
Speaking of the cordless phone, I'd add to that list: Caller ID boxes. If you didn't have one in the 90s, you were considered old timey, and probably still had a rotary dial wall phone.
@@angelinaduganNyThe only people i knew with Caller ID were the rich families. Paying for the service and renting or buying the boxes wasnt cheap and was seen as an unnecessary expense for most people.. Eventually It did start to become cheaper or even included in the service for free and phones finally had it as an included feature (im not sure when that happened, definitely not till late 90s)
I forgot about Magic Eye posters. I remember my boyfriend and I standing outside a mall store that had them in the window trying desperately to see the Star Trek USS Enterprise that was floating in the center of the stars. I wish I would have bought that thing.
@@katie7748 You had kinda cross your eyes as you stared into the picture. I couldn't do it at first but once I figured it out it was easy to do. After awhile though your eyes would start to strain which is probably why they're no longer popular.
I was a kid, but my parents bought their first home in the 90s. That Oak was everywhere. The kitchen walls were apricot. The sofa set, which they still have, was this southwest pattern in dusty peach, sage, and beige.
Oh my... Your parents' sofa set reads like what my mom has. Our old house was renovated in the early 1960s: Our walls are panelled throughout the house in sunset maple and the kitchen cabinetry matches them.
How cool that you covered the '90s, Rhetty! I was really young in the '90s. But I definitely remember VHS players/Tapes (I had a Disney collection like the ones in the video), computer/tv/entertainment center, cordless phones, Playstation, Nintendo 64(my uncle had this) and Chia pets. If possible, I would love to see a video on the 2000s.
I got my first CD player in 91, so I always associate the 90s with collecting CDs. I know they made it on the market in the 80s, but I waited until the players were more affordable.
I was a 90's kid so I remember alot of these. I remember my mom sponge painted her classroom ( she was a kindergarten teacher in the 90's), my mom and grandma had those fake greenery all over their houses. My parents a few years ago repainted their cabinets from oak colors, our trim and tables were the same color. I had a huge TV stand like the one you showed with built in rack underneath that had individual VHS tapes slots built in. My parents still have our big speakers. I had a pair of roller blades but my sister always preferred her roller skates. My parents house still has those bar hanging lights above their fireplace. I got a Playstation in 1999 when I was 8 years old. It blew my mind that I got one because they were very expensive for my family. I had forgot about gel candles my mom had a few.
Good Lord, watching this brings back so many memories. I have a fondness for the 80's, but I was pretty young then. The 90's really is my decade and I miss it so much. We had just about everything you cited in this video in our house. In fact, the old house still has that freestanding ceiling lamp in it. It's the exact style shown in this video except it was an off-white rather than black. The only thing we didn't have was the sponge painting on the walls, but I do remember seeing it in other houses. Great video!
Our house was definitely 90s! Borders on the walls, white appliances, light oak cabinets and entartainment center! And our top of the line Sony Trinitron 27" tv and JVC VCR
Awesome! I remember all of the things, and I even painted my walls in my first small home with the sponge painting. I couldn't go wrong! All the big hair from the 80s deflated and no longer glowed in black light. It was so sad. lol And didn't bell bottoms "try" to make a comeback int he 90s? lol Thank you for this wonderful nostalgic presentation.
Old Navy Cargo Pants😋🤪👖 Hey Rhett, you should do a video about the Preppy Look!! I really loved that style and tried to imitate it myself. Lol I still love wearing penny loafers😹👞👞
My only conmplaint - or suggestion is that there was an absolutely HUGE neo-Victorian trend all over the country - yes even California, especially San Francisco. New houses looked old, neo-Victorian furniture, art work, flower pictures and arrangements everywhere!! Every shred of fabric had flowers. Hunter green was ubiquitous and elegant. Houses became very fancy as the 90's economy started to boom all the way until 2008. It was all quite beautiful.
3:30 had this exact entertainment center as a kid. Still remember my way around it and the feel of the push glasses and the grooves for the fingers to pull the VHS out. Lol forgot about it unntill now though. That is wild.
Seeing a video presented as a short history documentary about stuff I had in my own home growing up is making me feel ancient, and the fact that it showed up in my suggestions the day I realised I officially have noticeable grey in my beard has me feeling some sort of way. Great video, 10/10 presentation, but I'm docking you two points for reminding me of my own mortality so you only get 8/10
I was born in 1982 and spent alot of my childhood and teen years in the 90s so i could relate so much to this video! Thank you so much for the memories! 💖✌😊🌈🌷🦋🎈🎉👍
80s kid here. (I turned 9 in 1980). The 80s were more innovative and fun; everything just flowed perfectly, one after the other. The 90s were more experimental, awkward, and quick fads. I guess the best thing about the '90s was grunge music; other than that, It was just not as fun. Nothing will ever compare to the great 80s.🥰
Oh man… the mention of halogen lamps gave me goosebumps. I remember being terrified of them since their hot bulbs were known for starting fires, which freaked me out,
I do remember a light cherry oak and a honey oak being popular at the time too. I don't remember seeing the dark cherry. I bet it looked nice though! Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Kirk!
Sunset maple representing, though our ancient (100+ years) house was renovated in the early 1960s. That honey oak rivals our wall panelling and kitchen cabinetry.
Another thing I remember from the 90s. I don't know if it's just my region, the coffee shops it was a cool place to hang out. And eating bagels with rage in the 90s. I remember bagel shops in could go anywhere you would find different varieties. Keep up the great work! love and enjoy your continent. Brings back a lot of memories.
We bought a GE PROFILE side/side refrigerator in 1980 that lasted until 2006 ! It was replace with a new brand called LG which lasted from 2006 to 20020. It was replaced by another LG . I had a collection of over 1800 VHS tapes. Gave most away to a senior citizen convelescent home.
Going back to the 1980s computers,I had a TI 99 4A, 1983, set up to color tv, I learned BASIC programming, played educational games, and other games. Cool!
Before the internet, we used modems and visited dial-up chat boards (like a website). There were chat rooms, forums, games, and best of all, weekly get-togethers at local restaurants and bars. This is how we met 'online' people in a safe place. Epic parties I must say. Every weekend brought 100+ people. I was a system operator for a huge one in Dallas. This is how I met my husband. Back then, I had to explain the concept of online to people. They thought it was weird that we met through a computer. This was 1991. Now it's more common to meet that way.
Definitely right about the furniture and appliance lasting decades! I was born in 90 and have had the same dresser my entire life. I finally gave it to my son 2 years ago (and my dad gave me his from back then lol) It’s as sturdy and works as well as now as it did back then! My night stand has been in my family since then as well.
Don’t forget the little mini water fountains everyone had on their mantle or shelf! But wow you really included a lot here. Hey , love this, I hope you do more 90’s, lifestyles, vehicles, clothes, fads, etc…

Cordless phones actually came out in the 80's. My mom worked at the AT&T store and they sold like gangbusters!!! Keep up the great vids!!!
Those beige computers... and beige everything ...argh!!! We were all so happy when those first colored iMacs came out in the late 90s! Finally some color and style in our lives once again! 😂
Even Apple had a few beige systems. My first computer, a TI 99 4A. I also had colored Macs. Great deal!
@@jackilynpyzocha662 Yeah! I learned on an Apple IIe at school and a few years later we had an Apple IIGS at home. Both of those were beige in color. It was definitely a trend of the time haha.
Yeah then after the g3 computers went back to being one color, black. Sometimes white.
Beige is so much nicer then the souless black and white decor of today
@@Pixiesfairiedust Yes. It would be nice to have more color options instead of black, white, and silver like today. Just not many other options other than beige back in the day. Same kind of problem as today haha
I was a teenager in the 90s. I think you should do a part 2 and mention grunge, loud colored clothes, minivans, leggings, and ridiculous wind suits.
Lol windbreaker outfits..we called them swooshies because of the sound they made when you walked 😆
One winter in the 90s we had a pretty bad ice storm and you could just put on your swooshies and fly down a hill no sled needed 😂
@@Kit_BearDid all of these, save for bustin payphones
@@peterj.fallon4327 Experiences may vary.
That Burner got me out of a lot of trouble. F**k I miss the 80's & 90's.
🎉 greetings from coastal Mississippi. I was the DIY king ...I had and still have a lot of these items. Thanks for the flashback of memories 😂
"Back then we loved our bass"?!? Bass is timeless, brother!!
Speaking of the cordless phone, I'd add to that list: Caller ID boxes. If you didn't have one in the 90s, you were considered old timey, and probably still had a rotary dial wall phone.
We did not have caller ID when I was a teen in the 90's. I would always use *69.
@@angelinaduganNy Quite creative.
I love this channel!! Rhetty, my friend, you always nail it. Enjoyed this very much!!😊
I used to just leave the dust on everything, it added character.
I still DO! 🤣😂🤣😂
And allergies haha
I remember the 90s as the decade when I probably drank the most. Also - Magic Eye posters
I forgot about Magic Eye posters. I remember my boyfriend and I standing outside a mall store that had them in the window trying desperately to see the Star Trek USS Enterprise that was floating in the center of the stars. I wish I would have bought that thing.
I could never figure out how to do Magic Eye 😢
@@katie7748 You had kinda cross your eyes as you stared into the picture. I couldn't do it at first but once I figured it out it was easy to do. After awhile though your eyes would start to strain which is probably why they're no longer popular.
I lost my virginity in 1994. I dated that same girl for nearly three straight years. Those were some bangin' years.
What a crazy time! Thanks for the memories Rhetty!
Those beige walls and oak cabinets look way better than all white and grey floors which is what everyone does nowadays
I agree 100 the
depression of today can be seen just by the souless decor
Yesssss!!! So many memories!!!!
Thank you for watching janedoe247!
I did the same. I have all of those CDs stored away, I spent hours burning them to a hard drive before I stored them.
Lots and lots of hunter green!
Yes there was. Thank you for watching!
It was so sad. lol And didn't bell bottoms "try" to make a comeback int he 90s? lol
Thank you for this wonderful nostalgic presentation.
And who could forget the Beanie Babies! Great video!
Beanie Babies 👶 ruled!!!
They were huge and especially with the early days of the internet booming. Thank you for watching!
Love your channel! Those oak cabinets & stencils on the walls brought back so many memories.
Cheers to people who keep stuff out of style and actually use it. It is better than throwing it away and making my trash.
Goose and apple kitchen decor. I had both, but not at the same time.
Another problem was that cordless phones could also interfere with other items that were on a similar wavelength.
Ever get your neighbor's call when you were on the phone, lol.
Great video, 10/10 presentation, but I'm docking you two points for reminding me of my own mortality so you only get 8/10
😂😂
Old Navy! Old Navy! Old Navy performance fleece!
Does anyone else remember this jingle in their 90s winter commercial?
The 90s didn't really become the 90s till about 94. Prior to that, it was just the "80s extended edition" 😂
I've heard that period called the "Turbo 90s"
Oh my gosh I will never forget the aol dial up sound!
I used to pick up cordless phones on the high UHF bands of my old TV.
Thank you for the memories 🥰
You're welcome and thank you for watching Monika!
Wrist watches. Key chains that made sounds. Pogs. Cd books.
I was born in 1982 and spent alot of my childhood and teen years in the 90s so i could relate so much to this video! Thank you so much for the memories! 💖✌😊🌈🌷🦋🎈🎉👍
Yay top 146 comments. Love this channel. Best to you and your family. Thanks for making this video. I was born in '94. Happy holidays!!!!!
I remember being terrified of them since their hot bulbs were known for starting fires, which freaked me out,
I still have that exact halogen floor lamp and a cordless home phone from the 90’s. 😁👍
Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺🏠
Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸🌈
Sooo true! Unfortunately, i still have some of these in my home 😂😂
1990s! Good Times!
1:25 FWIW, I've always thought (and still do), think that cargo pants are the bees knees.
I like 'em.
We can still have those 1990s things back in the present day if we want to.
I still have the Super Nintendo set from 1996.
@@PraveenSrJ01 That's good to know.
OMG, Builder’s Square. 😂
I sponge painted my son’s nursery, loved the way it came out. Later I stenciled dinosaurs on the walls. He just turned 25.
I work at a Goodwill and I absolutely DESPISE those fake plants! They’re always covered in dust and grease from being on top of the cabinets!😂😂
😂😂I don’t blame you !
Maybe u can find a way to hose them down outside and let them dry in the sun. ;)
I bet certain items like plastic indoor plants 🌱 are a nightmare for shops like Goodwill. What else is troublesome?
Watching this video, l was flooded with some bittersweet memories! Thanks fella!!😃👍👍
You're welcome and thank you for watching Cynthia!
Thanks for the memories. I was in the Army during most of the 90s. 🪖 🇺🇸
Thank you for your service.😊🇺🇸
Thank you for watching and thank you for your service Dru!
I hated the fringe craze, i love the look of oak, it is so beautiful to look at. We had a Dark Cherry Living Room.
I do remember a light cherry oak and a honey oak being popular at the time too. I don't remember seeing the dark cherry. I bet it looked nice though! Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Kirk!
@@RhettyforHistory Some of it I made, some I bought. It anchor the living room so it felt Cozy
Sunset maple representing, though our ancient (100+ years) house was renovated in the early 1960s. That honey oak rivals our wall panelling and kitchen cabinetry.
I’m so excited about Cargo Pants coming back now ❤ I love Cargo Pants
We had cathedral ceilings and hanging lamps in our A-Frame! Open design for kitchen and living room. A fabulous loft! Built in the 1960s
I miss being a little boy, and my parents being the guardians. We had all this stuff. I miss my dad. He provided such a great life for me as a kid.
Polished brass is making a come back. lol
I was born in 1989, so, I did experience some of it!
Great topic Rhett ! Yes, I remember most of these items.
I was in the 3rd grade in the fall of 91’ and turned 8 years old that year.
omni-link for the win... then later Hotline!
Thanks Rhetty❤
Definitely right about the furniture and appliance lasting decades! I was born in 90 and have had the same dresser my entire life. I finally gave it to my son 2 years ago (and my dad gave me his from back then lol) It’s as sturdy and works as well as now as it did back then! My night stand has been in my family since then as well.
So many memories as a kid
Don’t forget the little mini water fountains everyone had on their mantle or shelf! But wow you really included a lot here.
Hey , love this, I hope you do more 90’s, lifestyles, vehicles, clothes, fads, etc…
I miss the nineies so much!
