This is one of those games that I absolutely want to play, but I just know I don't have the time to play it fully before Odyssey. It'll be a 2018 buy for sure for me!
In the next two weeks I'm not even sure I have 10 hours of time I can dedicate to it, that's the problem! Any time I put into anything else will directly delay me from playing Odyssey down the road, and I'm not about to put _anything_ between myself and a game I've waited years for! I wouldn't want to rush through it just to play it when it's hot out of the oven, I'd much rather take my time and enjoy it for what it is.
This really is a great 3D platformer that should not be missed. There is a PS4/Xone release coming, hopefully that means the Switch won't be far behind.
3:18 For me, the snatcher reminded me of Aku from samurai jack with the way he shifts his tall and lean body, his bombastic voice, and even some of his dialogue such as his laughing and his usage of the word "fool (Or "FOOOOOOOL!").
They got sent a dev kit recently, it might take some time but it probably will come out for the Switch Though it'd probably be way better on PC what with the mod support it'll be getting
So SPOILERS in this comment, but I just want to see how many people agree with me. The fourth level in the Subcon Forest, the one where you're exploring the house while the queen is chasing you, is like, really fucking scary, and I'm not being sarcastic. Like the game is incredibly cutesy elsewhere and then out of nowhere comes a legitimately panic-inducing horror level.
Yeah. I think a big part of that is the music and effects when she sees you. It’s a bit like Sonic in water; without the music it’s really nothing too bad.
Good review Antdude. I've played most of the first world and some of the second so far, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm only a tad disappointed that some components feel a little too much like Super Mario 64. Like having to exit and enter each stage after each mission. But as you said, they make up for it a bit by changing the level layouts. (i.e. making it rain, putting lava everywhere) The thing I'm MOST happy about with this review though is hearing you say that you also like Yooka-Laylee. I feel like there's only a handful of people on the planet that like that game, and I don't understand why. I LOVED it. Spent a good 30 to 40 hours mastering it, and I intend to play it through again. Yet for some reason all the things people said they WANTED in a BK revival suddenly turn to negatives as soon as it releases? I just don't get it. But whatever. To each their own I guess. :)
Sonicisbadazz according to most discussions about yooka laylee, It was not good because of how tedious it was to get collectables compared to banjo kazooie and because of how bland the game is apparently.
+Golden Dededestruction Well i respect the opinions of others, but I can't disagree more. "Bland" is one of the LAST words I would use, and there were very few Pagies that I found irritating to get. Some were certainly harder than others--the mine cart stages were cool but I don't know why they demanded we collect so many gems to complete them--but I found fun in just about all of them. Though I don't mean to sound like a condescending ass, I can't help thinking that they just didn't like the game and are trying to ascribe negative qualities where they don't actually exist, or in some cases completely misunderstanding the point of Playtonic's design decisions. For example, one of the big criticisms I've heard is that the levels are too big. Personally, I never find large levels intimidating, but I get that others do, so fine. However, the reason this bothers many of them is just because of how much empty space there is, largely devoid of collectibles. In tandem with that complaint is the Power Meter which limits certain moves. But I think the players might not be looking at this from the right angle. Playtonic could have easily filled all that empty space with stuff to collect, but to do so would be disregarding what Donkey Kong 64 did to the genre. It was way too cluttered with items to collect and the result is that it became a chore for most players. So it shouldn't really surprise any of us that these levels have a lot of empty space (though I can concede that this can be fixed by simply making the stages smaller). Now the reason this is relevant to the Power Meter is because if you eliminate most of the collectibles, the method for limiting special moves goes with it. In Banjo-Kazooie there were Red Feathers, Blue Eggs, Golden Feathers, and other doodads that the pair used to activate flight, shoot at enemies, and become invincible. In order to avoid the players breaking the game or cheating their way through the whole thing--like for example with the invincibility move--you have to find a new way to limit these abilities. So what's the solution? A power meter that recharges after a few seconds. Viola. No more complaints about too many items, and no way for players to break the game. It's not that I think Yooka-Laylee is perfect. There are plenty of legitimate complaints one can make about it--like for example the placement of Golden Quills in random spots by themselves. But so many of the complaints feel like they're disregarding what the collect-a-thon platformer is about, and others feel like misunderstandings on the part of players. What I know personally is that I played the entire game through to 100% completion in about two weeks and enjoyed nearly every second of it. I'd easily put it in the same category as B-K and B-T, though the older games probably edge Y-L out by the slimmest of margins. I'm looking forward to playing it through again.
tbh i most cases exiting the level after each missions was necessary due to how much the levels change between missions, especially in the second level.
I finally played this on switch, on sale with DLC. I'm amazed how much I enjoyed it. The controls are so tight, and if I end up falling off something it's clearly my fault and not stupid controls. I love the aesthetics and story. Ive not had this much fun with a game for a while. It's not too easy, but easy enough to be enjoyable without being annoying.

OH MY gosh! I want this to come to the Switch, but I honestly hope it comes out next year. If Hat in Time came out on the Switch this year it might get overshadowed by Mario Odyssey

rickywolfy101 Yeah i think someone mentioned that it was because Nintendo wants to limit how many indie games they are releasing. (Probably because it will help the games that are releasing to get better sales) But hopefully it will come to Switch next year.

NintenBoy // Jalen Soeung you cant trust the internet on yooka laylee. Things such as the bad xbox port and the camera has been fixed. The xbox patch was even released day 1. And the games are different enough to be put in different categories. they where clearly inspired by different games
After the Mighty No 9 Disaster Gears for Breakfast actually had an update where they talked about how they didn't want their game to burn people. Jonas (lead dev) and his team really did their best to not disappoint, and boy did they succeed. Heck even before the kickstarter was finished the game showed promise with how much attention to detail they had with Mafia Town, with small things like the music changing depending if your underwater or on the beach and such. Also for anyone wondering how this fares to Yooka Laylee: Yooka Laylee was very close to trying to be an old 3D collectathon, but also fell into the same traps and issues as those games. A Hat in Time very much does its best to avoid those traps and make the experience challenging-but forgiving.
So happy to see 3D platformers making a comeback! And most of them have not only been really good, but everyone is talking about them! 2017 might actually be the year that proves to developers that 3D platformers are a genre that people want.

Sporetrix he probably did since they look new
Weird question, ya'll know what kind or brand they are?
I actually got a yarn piece when I was supposed to get it with the Dweller's Mask. That's good game design.
So.....Mario with a new hat. XD
heccin cute
Man if only I had money to buy that awesome game
Why are there so many hat themed games in 2017?
Nicholas Stevens I can only think of two: Super Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time. Which ones were you thinking of?
Nicholas Stevens 2017: the year of hats
Lily Mega Eevee Also tf2 once it gets updated
You can't count TF2. That came out years ago. So far, only two new hat games this year.
Not really deserving of 'so many'.
Tf2 was the original hat game, despite it not starting off with hats.
I searched on tour Comment section and nobody said a thing, so I'll say It, and I'm sorry, AntDude, but....
That's NOT a poncho. That's CLEARLY a raincoat!
Man, the similarities between this review and Nitro Rad's from last week...kinda too many to ignore.
Hopefully it's a coincidence.
Thats what I thought too lol

*FREEZE!* This is the grammar police! The word you're looking for is 'Overflown'.

I have nobody
To think that this game isnt even 30 bucks and so hecking good.
I absolutely love it.
Better than yooka laylee
Rene G Have you even played any of them?
Even if he hasn't there's many reviews that talk about the bad things the game has. And this doesn't have any of them.
NintenBoy // Jalen Soeung you cant trust the internet on yooka laylee. Things such as the bad xbox port and the camera has been fixed. The xbox patch was even released day 1. And the games are different enough to be put in different categories. they where clearly inspired by different games
Rene G i'm gonna buy both
NintenBoy // Jalen Soeung The only bad thing... Camera.
It’s not hecking cute...
ITS PECKING CUTE
This is my most favourite game I have ever played!
i just realized antdude has an All Might figurine
Speaking of the Snatcher, he even has the same dialogue sound effect as the guy from Paper Mario
I will pay any amount for a sequel. Take my money. Just keep the incredibly adorable hat kid and we're good
So happy to see 3D platformers making a comeback! And most of them have not only been really good, but everyone is talking about them! 2017 might actually be the year that proves to developers that 3D platformers are a genre that people want.
It did, kinda.
Did you know that all the murderers in the train are correct? The developers said they did it to boost thw players confidence and i think thats a great idea
