- A Hat in Time is one of my favorite 3D platformers. It's a great combo of unique charm, fun controls, and of course, good level design. But which of these levels are the best, and which ones fall short? Join me in this video where I rank every world in A Hat in Time.

For the train murder mystery, there is no time limit. "Time" advances when you go through certain doorways to give you the illusion of a time limit, but you have all the time you need to explore and find everything.

It's kind of ironic that you have to begin chapter 3 before you can complete chapter 2, Hat Kid literally loses her soul in order to continue as an actor.
But don't forget, you can also complete chapter 3 fully first, then go back to chapter 2, so that you may sell your soul for the benefits, and buy it back before acting again.

Well, there is technically a boss in Nyazkuza with Meowjima, who is pretty cool. The fact they reference Yakuza in my 3D platformer is legendaryl

I wish that boss had a pay-off though. For just how out of the way he is and how good at exploring (or browsing the internet) you have to be to find him, nothing happens after you beat him. Granted, he's not that hard once you realize his pattern (singular), but give me something for engaging in the first place.

Toilet of Doom is legit one of my favorite parts. I find it to be such a fun fight.
Fun Fact: It's actually possible to beat Cheating the Race without the time stop hat. Granted it's INSANELY difficult, but it is possible.

Exactly! I personally found out about it from the dancin meme and the Snatcher and it impressed me more than I thought that it would. The characters and the gameplay make it very engaging and it's truly one of a kind.
@@sakuraneko2595 same, but it was really popular back in like 2018 and 2019 already, and looking at what kinds of games people enjoy/play nowadays this one wont get as much recognition sadly but im sure itll get some newcomers
unless they make a hat in time 2 (which i doubt but its a chance), that'd make some people or old fans interested

Each tier is a significant change in quality to the last, Tier 2 levels are much better than tier 1, and Tier 3 levels are much better than tier 2 levels. Switching levels within tiers is completely fine, these are just my opinions, but ranking something like Time's end over Arctic Cruise (levels in completely different tiers) is just OBJECTIVELY incorrect.
The thing with Hat in Time is that I wouldn't call any of the chapters bad. Mafia Town is a fantastic introduction and feels exactly like a world from an N64 3D platformer, Battle of the Birds has Conductor, DJ Grooves, and levels like Train Rush and Murder on the Owl Express (although they admittedly gave all of the good levels to Conductor and DJ Grooves got barely anything), Subcon Forest has Snatcher so enough said, Alpine has vibes (for me at least) and some of the best and most difficult platforming in the base game, Time's End is still one of the best finales I've played in a platformer, Arctic Cruise is short but sweet and the cruise whip is one of the best areas to explore in a non-open world chapter, and Nyakuza Metro is a great open world with a an even better finale. I love them all, honestly, and it's hard for me to pick one definitive best chapter.
I love platforming games, and Hat In Time is by far one of the best I’ve played. Amazing character designs, voice acting, story ideas and world building combined with some genuinely challenging levels make for an (almost) perfect gaming experience. (For me, that is.)
This is kinda/basically like Schaffrillas Productions ranking videos not gonna lie.
They even give off a similar vibe

I didn’t see anyone mention this, but I really like the “murder on the owl express” sub level because it is heavily based off of Agatha Christie’s book “Murder On The Orient Express” which will probably be one of my favorite books when I end up reading it 😅

Always nice to see videos about this game, its my favorite 3D platformer, probably my favorite platformer in general.
In alpine skyline you’re meant to use the ice ability to deal with the eggs- you’re invincible to them while frozen. The time stop ability is also recommended for the flower plague
See I never knew to do that since nothing in the game ever even hints at it.

You can just blow them up with the brewing hat which I think is more intuitive because it is a ranged attack and it is also really good against pompodour birds
Honestly Subcon Forest deserved to be in first. It has the perfect spooky atmosphere, the BEST Scary Level featuring Queen Vanessa, being truly giving nightmares and being the most TERRIFYING character in the game gave us chills. And the Snatcher gave me so much vibes.
Subcon forest is also basically a free-roam area, like you can do half of the missions without having to even directly select that mission, namely subcon well and vanessa's manor i think. It's not 100% a free roam area like Nyakuza or Alpine where you can do whatever you want in whatever order, but that balance of linearity+free roam is nice
I really wish they expanded on the extremely cool beginning section of alpine skyline, imagine a level that doesn’t have concrete characters and is just a ruined land full of visual history of a tribe of birds that used to be there, that would make the basic characters work much better because they don’t need to be much else other than mysterious characters that are only legend
havent seen it mentioned anywhere but Artic express's ship shape was changed from no pathing logic to having a path logic making most of the tasks spawn from point a to b before one of the points gets moved and repeat
I do wish we had the chance to actually take down the Empress in a boss fight...
I think alpine skyline could have made the illness a parasite and make that a boss
I love this game with all my heart, I even enjoy the Death Wish mode. All of the chapters were so damn enjoyable and I desperately need a sequel to see how much the devs improved.
Then the Arctic Cruise missions came. And they singlehandedly made my ranking of this game go from a 9 to an 8

This was great. I never played this game, and now I really wanna. You also introduced me to NSR
I loved DJ groove a lot, even though I hated his levels. Because of this even though I liked the conductors missions more I GRINDED TO GET THE BETTER SCORE ON THE DJ MISSIONS INSTEAD leading to me probably being one of the ONLY people to have to fight dj at the end of that chapter cause I was so stubborn about running the same levels over and over to get a slightly better score over the conductor lol
I fought DJ too and I feel it’s a better ending than fighting the conductor

This is my favorite 3d platformer, and you definitely did a great job talking about it.

8:44 thing to note: that is not a moon set. That is actually the moon. If you look up you can see the planet and hat kid’s ship. That and it’s low gravity. Y’know, grooves isn’t called a moon penguin for nothing.
I had the same experience with ship shape. I think what makes it so hard initially Is that your still stuck in an environment your probably still not used to even after the first level, on top of the fact your on a time limit and the markers that try to help just don't work if you have more than one task at the moment. I was still getting confused about the layout by the final level, so this level in particular may as well be a memory game.

My favorite game of all eternity
I was expecting a giant as a boss fight for Alpine, like Jack and the beanstock. One of the mountain villagers even alludes to it, asking who built all this, and "birds don't build houses".
All of these chapters are great!
While some are better than others they all work together in creativity and greatness to make a hat in time a great game (with deathwish and the collectibles and stories as a delicious cherry on top)
Same thing happened to me in ship shape, I couldn’t beat it at first, then I took a break, and when I came back, I beat it first try.
I think it’d be so cool if Alpine had: lower gravity sections, a boss Goat that’s in the twilight zone as the last time piece, could have been perfect for a plot surrounding “ascension, but turns out it’s a false god” instead of some weird plant pandemic
Pretty much my order for the areas too! Especially for Subcon Forest and Nyakuza Metro! Those two are my favorite areas to just walk around and collect pons in. I’ve even played hide-and-seek with a friend in Subcon because of how much I love the area! Hoping one day I can play tag in it too. That would be awesome… 🥲

7. Time's End - Cool mission, but it is only a single mission so...
6. Alpine Skyline - Really cool area for the most part, but The Birdhouse is probably my second least favorite mission, only above the Arctic Cruise time rift (which doesn't hold as much weight to me since it's optional), so it gets dragged down a lot.
5. Mafia Town - Pretty basic area, but does some cool stuff. Not much to say about it - as with most game's starter areas.
4. Battle of The Birds - A-A-A-A-A MYYYYEEERRRRDERRR???!?!?!? ON MY OWL EXPRESS?!?!? Is the best line in this entire game. And the chapter itself is extremely fun - having to go back to the first level again but it changes is SO cool, and the gameplay is solid all around throughout the levels (although yes, the Death Wish version of the Parade level can eat shit and die. Legitimately made me quit Death Wish all together on my first playthrough, and after doing it last night, has made me consider quitting again on my second playthrough.)
3. Subcon Forest - This is where the areas start to get to masterpiece level. Snatcher is SUCH a fun character, this area looks sick as hell, the gameplay is amazing, each chapter is insanely well designed, and You Contract Has Expired is easily the best song in the game. I have nothing bad to say about this area.
2. Arctic Cruise - So to be completely transparent, if this were just going off of gameplay, and had different theming/characters, this would probably be below Battle of The Birds. However I am contractually obligated (hah) to put this area this high because THE SEALS ARE SO FUCKING CUTE OH MY GOD. I'm not kidding, for whatever reason, to me the seals are the SINGLE MOST ADORABLE CREATURES IN ANYTHING. *EVER.* From fiction, or real life. I mean it wholeheartedly when I say I have _litterally _*_cried,_* not just once, but *_MULTIPLE TIMES_* from how cute they are. I DON'T CRY FROM THINGS BEING CUTE. And I don't mean a tear or two fell out of my eye, I mean face in my hands, loud enough that people in another room could probably hear me, full on crying. That one seal laying on the towel, the first time I played the game, legitimately made me stay in that room, just replaying the dialogue over and over and over, FOR ALMOST THIRTY MINUTES. And that scene where you blow the seal a kiss MADE ME CRY MORE THAN THE GODDAMN ENDING OF FUCKING OMORI. Anyways, gameplay-wise Mission 2 is peak, Mission 1 is pretty cool, and Mission 3 is meh. Might even be below Mafia Town or Alpine Skyline gameplay wise, idk.
1. Nyakuza Metro - While Arctic Cruise makes me feel the most overwhelming joy, Nyakuza Metro gets the slight edge because it's extremely long, amazing looking, has my favorite theming out of the game, has insanely cool gameplay, adds some of the best cosmetics in the game, is a freeroam area in a way more fun way than Alpine Skyline, and has some of the most fun and well thought out sections in the entire game. Turns out, to even _baaaaaaaarrrrreeelly_ beat Arctic Cruise, you need to be a masterpiece of a video game area.
Not much to say about Mafia Town?!?? If you're talking missions alone I can sorta get it--they aren't necessarily the greatest--but that area is so freaking dense with things to explore it's insane. It's a tiny area where every single inch is literally perfectly designed. Not to mention the mafia are easily the best npcs....If you just beeline to the end of each mission it's nothing special, but if you take the time to explore the place in its entirety it absolutely deserves to be ranked near the top.
Also I love how much the seals impact your opinion lol
Nyakuza Plaza is so goood. It just too bad my computer lags like crazy in that level. The Empress is also surprisingly menacing compared to most enemies in this game.
It's really interesting how divisive people can be on the big parade/great big hootenanny, cuz everyone I've seen either loves those levels (like me) or hates them and there's rarely any in between. Respect the opinion! I just think it's interesting how much they can vary lmao
one of the things i felt was a big flaw in a hat in time was the lack of unique cutscenes, and by that i mean specific animations and not just a characters idle animation being moved around. that became readily apparent on a recent replay, as mafia town has a couple like that but the rest of the base game is barren, while nyakuza metro has a SPECIFIC CUTSCENE introducing the cat trains. 'tis a real shame

Really cool video heard a lot of things about this game from a good number of RUclipsrs and it looks pretty cool, how do curiosity do you plan on me doing a ranking levels of puppeteer if you haven't seen the game yet I recommend it it's basically somewhat like hat in time only I'm not really sure it's just a great game

Honestly chapter 5 is my favorite because the missions are very enjoyable and I kind of have a soft spot for final missions that make you do something instead of fight a boss

17:30 Try attacking the Emperess after the final mission, and you'll know why this isn't a boss fight. She would utterly destroy the player. And if you look around, there is a secret boss in the Metro. It's just without fanfare or anything, it's just there though.

Alright. After watching this whole video, I can definitely say you absolutely nailed it! I don’t agree with it fully, but you really went into detail with every subject in every area. If there’s one thing I would change, I’d likely swap Mafia Town and Battle of the Birds, but apart from that, every other part of this is pretty much where anyone else would rank it. I personally never look forward to Alpine Skyline, as Twilight Bell (sorry) and The Illness Has Spread are some of my least favorite missions in the game. Arctic Cruise may be short, but it still isn’t easy, except for the beginning. Ship shape though… Battle of the Birds is that one level where I feel like it revolves around writing your own story for the chapter, as there’s several ways the chapter can start, continue, and end. And I wouldn’t say Picture Perfect is forgettable, because you may not remember that the music is among the most cheerful in the game. Mafia Town is up there with Cascade Kingdom for a fantastic opening level, and the Mafia goons are hilarious. Not too difficult, but a great way to start. I wish Nyakuza Metro was a bit harder, and this is coming from someone who first played it this morning at the time I’m writing this, but I still loved it. Cheerful music, the whole place was your playground, but I agree. There should have been a boss. And finally Subcon Forest is the perfect creepy level. Snatcher is a great antagonist for the area (Btw you mentioned his voice, which comes from the RUclipsr Yungtown) And the missions were easily the most varied, both in difficulty and in style.

I feel like both Mafia Town and Subcon Forest are more free roam than Alpine Skyline, the free roam level, that said Alpine Skyline is still quite fun.
On the switch the death wish contracts and ship shape are left un nerfed, speedrun from outer space is brutal on switch

Ship Shape is one of my favorite missions in the entire game
I hated it when I first played. Barely knew the layout of the ship and the arrows were misleading.
But once I did Cruisin for a Bruisin, it was my favorite challenge for sure

While I do think the Arctic cruise is one of the weaker ones, i think it has the best theming and atmosphere out of any other chapter. The reason for this is because it reminds me of a cruise trip when I was younger which brings back a lot of nostalgia.

I feel like alpine skyline is underrated, while I agree with the criticism, I just find its missions to be the best in the game (besides boss battles) as they are just pure platforming and I always look forward playing them again on a new playhthrough. Most of the other worlds while indeed having great characters just aren't that great on subsequent playthroughs.
It should at least beat out arctic cruise imo, I found that one to be quite dissapointing. Only 3 missions with the 2nd one being arguably the most annoying task in the game, no bossfight either and while the characters are better than alpine they just don't do enough to move the chapter anywhere higher than last place for me.

Interesting how my ranking is very similar to yours, except for Nyakuza Metro. I didnt like it very much, I found the areas to be too similar (mostly dark hallways with neon lights) and there was no boss fight when the Empress could easily have been an amazing boss. Speaking of the Empress, I didnt like how she is basically Snatcher 2.0 since she forces you to do jobs for her and, at the end, tries to kill you. It is not so charming or crative at the second time. Though I have to say I really like the huge cats pulling the metros.
I guess Nyakuza Metro is better than Alpine Skylines and the Arctic Cruise, but I dont think it is better than Mafia Town and Battle of the Birds.
But oh well, you put Subcon Forest at first and you couldnt be more right!
I have the opposite opinions of his on rush hour, while I love the level itself even if there wasn't a boss, I find the ending the least satisfying of all. It's funny at best and is an excuse not to have a proper defeat at worst.

So for context, the copy of AHIT I got was damaged. However, all it did was make the game's loading screens take forever and probably also fucked up my framerate, but that could just be a Nintendo Switch thing. I say this because I wanna make it clear that my issues with Alpine Skyline sure aren't related to the damaged copy I had but because the level itself is ass.
Compared to Dead Bird Studio, Subcon Forest and other levels, it is bland in design. The ending where everything is out for your blood is a pain in the ass, scaling the clocktower made me wanna punch a hole in my switch and worst of all, the saving.
Ok, the area's large. Obviously I'm not gonna get it all done at once. I get one Time Piece, and I come out the game, close the game and turn my switch off thinking the level autosaves after collecting time pieces.
TURNS OUT UNLESS YOU MANUALLY SAVE NOTHING DOES OR SOME SHIT LIKE THAT. I HAD TO REDO THE SAME FOUR LEVELS FOUR TIMES.

My kinda best to ABSOLUTE best (Meaning I don't hate any of these. It's like having two best friends you really like, but choosing which one you like more): Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 1, Chapter 6, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 7.
I've noticed in some of this video's comments and some online reviews that everyone collectively agrees Alpine Skyline kinda (really) sucked.

I liked Picture Perfect because the pictures of Hat Kid are adorable
If I'm being honest, "Cheating the Race" was by FAR the most disappointing mission in the entire game. My first playthrough (my only playthrough as of writing this) I tried playing each mission in order of appearance. So when i was told i had to come back to this one level in the first world, I kinda got excited and nervous at the same time. I normally hate back tracking to previous levels with new abilities, but this game has been pretty fun thus far, so lets give this a shot.
Where it becomes disappointing is when I finally get to play the damn mission. I finally get to give this challenge a fair shot after I've beaten the final boss... (I was hoping the final level would give me the last few pieces of yarn I needed for the time hat.) I go back to mafia town to pick up some yarn. After collecting enough, I dawn my new time slow hat and meet with the mafia to claim my prize... the race only lasted a minute, and it wasn't even that interesting.... the last thing I ever did for 100%... such a disappointment...
