- Cuphead probably has the best lineup of bosses I've seen in a video game, and the DLC only added to this impressive selection. With this new release, I thought it would be fun to go back and rank every boss in the game. Credit to a friend of mine who S ranked every boss for giving me tips and correcting a few errors.

Well... Yeah? It's Cuphead, what did you expect? It's a game designed in such a way that every loss is your own fault. It's completely natural that some people struggle with some things. A lot of people thought the Khal's Robot was the hardest boss in the game. Me however? He was hard to go no hit. That's it. First phase required some tight strats, but that's it. Same with Cap Brineybeard.
And a boss that most people didn't really struggle with, Goopy, was one that I had a personal beef with. He's so damn simple, but "Jumping bosses" in games are my bane, I can never get good at them for some reason
Fun fact: grim matchstick s fire balls on the 3rd phase are just supposed to shoot 2 bullets but a bug happened which made it four

Little tip for the dice block, if you parry the very second king dice claps his hands its a garanted 1, if you parry when he opens his hands its a garated 2 , if you parry right before the dice is fully revealed its a garanted 3

Grim is one of those fights people either love or hate.
I love how difficult he is (even with Lobber+Charge) and S-Ranking him was fun, but didn’t feel impossible like some others (Wally and Cala Maria)
Grim matchstick is in my top 5 favorite bosses, I really love him and seeing him at the bottom hurt me inside a little, glad to see someone else loves him too!
i dont get it tho everyone says grim, wally and cala are impossible or rlly hard i completed them in my few first attempts but the 'easy' ones are rlly hard for me
The only one of these I even considered being close to impossible was Wally Warbles. He is easily one of the hardest S Ranks, next to King Dice and Chef Saltbaker.

@@planti61 Absolutely not. For me, she was sort of difficult because of the scarce parries. I had the same issue with Mortimer Freeze.
The indicator that the fireballs in Grim's fight are about to jump is the fact that they stay down for a second with their teeth clenched before jumping. If you see them just move away, the only other obstacle is Grim's flames (occasionaly might I add) and really if you time the jump right you'll be fine.
They also look in the direction that they will jump.
And also I don’t know if this counts but only the angry ones with their teeth bared jump.

Outside of Hilda Berg, I didn't care for the airplane fights until Esther Winchester. It brought back that same chaotic but balanced fun that NEVER felt like just a luck-based endurance test in any one of its phases. She's my favorite boss and taking her on was easily the best time I had in the DLC!

my fave is chef saltbacker, because he invokes fear in the pre-boss segment, and that the music represents the chef in the entire fight, the music motief used in the rest of the DLC now giving a feeling of a finale that you need to bring, how the phases are represanted (especially his last phase), the plot twist, and just how hilarious he was easily redeamed, and the fight itself seems insane enough to be in 2nd place, with ester's fight insanity just barly at number 1, even if I haven't played the game once, makes the chef my favorite. P.S. the music and how the chef is shown during the phases, reminds me a bit of kefka from FF6, and sorry for typos.

As with every list theres obviously going to be placements people disagree with, but my god esther getting the love and attention she deserves is always great

Don't kill me but my personal favorite is Dr. Kahl. His first phase is so unique, and I love that it tailors itself to each player and the order in how they kill the boss (almost everyone has a different preference), I love the progression to his final phase where he pulls out his last attack in desperation, how the robot slowly falls apart until Dr. Kahl is exposed in the small little bottom half of the head. Dr. Kahl's laugh and his design also give him so much personality. I also like dodging his 3rd phase because it's incredibly difficult whilst being linear and fair, and never feels cheap unlike other difficult phases i.e. Grim's 2nd phase.

I'd say that Grim is at least in my top 3 personally, sort of tied with cala maria and saltbaker. It's crazy how people have such different opinions on stuff like this
Everything is different for people. Some say Cala was the hardest but was decent for me and the robot was the bane of my existence but I know people who beat him on their first try. I guess different aspects are what do it like people who are great at platforming like Grim or honeybottoms but people who like gauntlets have a better time with Bon bon or king dice

This guy placed two of the hardest bosses all the way at the bottom, coincidence? I think not.
My fave is bootlegger boogie/moonshine mob just from the music alone along with them being still fun once you get the hang of it, the crack shot I found does similar damage to the chaser depending on the situation yet still dominates root pack’s secret phase and the dlc was all I wanted!
My personal favorite boss in the game is honestly the Devil. His attacks in the first phase are cool, referencing several of the Devil's biblical forms, the goat, spider, and the snake, and his second phase in hell is awesome as well, even if they could have done better with the final phase. Even his two battle themes are awesome(he's actually the only boss in the game with two themes I think). Overall just a great finale to the base game. Saltbaker is great, but I just prefer the Devil, both as a boss and a final boss. I also feel like I'm one of the few people who actually appreciates goopy le grande for what he is lol.
Grim matchstick is the TEXTBOOK DEFINITION of OVERHATED. Every single person I’ve seen talking negatively about Grim just needs to get good with this fight. I genuinely don’t know how anyone could rank him lower than Goopy or Beppi…
You are so incredibly right on Esther Winchester. The art is great and it is an extremely well done boss. This list is great, the only boss I would bump up is chef salt baker
I also had the misfortune of fighting the moonshine mob first out of all the dlc bosses, but that sorta helped me get back into the mood of cuphead(difficulty wise) and made the upcoming bosses more easy to handle
im gonna be honest i was so ecstatic to see esther be number 1 on this list because i 100% agree with her placement here
she has such a good balence between complete chaos but also fairness, she's not an easy boss but everytime i lost i didnt feel like murdering my switch over it. that helped make her a good and fun challenge
also i love her transformations throughout the phases and, in my opinion, she has the most dynamic changes between phases
while yes phase 1 and 2 didnt change too much since the only difference was that she left the moving saloon, if you were to tell me that a boss in cuphead accidentally cooks herself and turns into a sausage, i would think you're insane
and the crazy transformations help amplify the chaos in her fight and its just genuinely so good and i love it so much

For Grim Matchstick, the fireballs in the second phase that have the sharp toothy smile are the only kind that can jump. It’s not guaranteed that they’ll jump, but keep an eye on them and you should be fine.
PS: They jump to your current position or where they think your going to go. Just stay calm and pay attention.
From a gameplay standpoint, Captain Brineybeard is my fave! Just a really really fun fight!
With Grimm’s second phase, the fires do a little crouch before jumping and jump for the last cloud you were on

I rarely comment on videos but I just wanted to say that I have been watching your content since around 2015 when you did those SML countdowns, and I am astounded at how much your videos have improved over the years while still having the same feel as if they haven't aged a day. Keep up the good work man !
i personally really like the fact that grim's last phase forces you to switch up your strategy, it feels really unique! and i never found the random placement of the clouds that bothersome, but maybe its just me.
i'm also bad at parrying the dice in king dice, but i still like his fight a lot. it can be frustrating at times, but i was sooo proud of myself when i first beat him without p sugar (with chalice, admittedly). none of the specific minibosses cause that much trouble for me, cause due to the aformentioned being bad at rolling the dice, ive accidentally landed on the ones i was bad at so much that i can beat them pretty consistenly now lmao
while i love dr kahl as a character, i'd have to agree with your placement of his fight. while i usually dont mind difficult bosses, his difficulty made the boss fight borderline unenjoyable for me, even if i really love the first phase when it comes to mechanics, and it really taught me to use the miniplane lol
i absolutely love capn brineybeard gameplay wise, dodging all of the different attacks is super fun, and made me feel very skilled, even if im not the best at this game in actuality
sheriff winchester is an absolute delight, i love her as a character and i love how chaotic the fight is! on my first few attempts i had absolutely no clue what was going on, and slowly finding myself in all that chaos felt super good. although the last phase gave me a ton of trouble, i kept dying just as she was about to die
the howling aces, while not that difficult, i really love just for the sheer "WHAT THE FUCK /POS" feelings it gave me. first the fact that its not an actual airplane fight, and then the last phase, oh man! the sheer gleeful surprise i felt when MY SCREEN FUCKIN ROTATED was unparalleled, and i literally said "THAT WAS SO COOL" out loud when i beat this boss
overall i'd say my favorite bosses in cuphead are werner (fuckin love that guy, he's so ridiculous), king dice, brineybeard and the howling aces

Djimmi the great was always my favourite boss designwise. All 5 of his phases are challenging yet really cool. His music is also an absolute bop.

For Grim, the second phase does have an indicator for the fireballs. If you look at them, the fireball that is about to jump will be crouching down before they do jump
I am very pleased to see Esther getting the appreciation she deserves, she’s a big favorite of mine as well
Also, I feel the exact opposite with Grim and Rumor. Grim’s clouds felt way more predictable, fair, and simple to deal with while being fun and exciting, whereas Rumor’s platforms seemed way more random and unfair for me. Plus, in Rumor’s fight, it seems like you can get hit off screen significantly more than you ever would during Grim’s fight.
That being said, neither were too difficult for me. I’m playing the game for the first time and recently got to world 3. It took me like a little over an hour to beat Grim, and Rumor took maybe 2-3 hours total. Both were fun, and I absolutely adore the aesthetics and design of the levels as I do with all Cuphead bosses, but Rumor for some reason felt a bit more boring, at least gameplay wise. She was tough, and harder to fight compared to Grim, but also just kinda boring and frustrating to the point where I was getting a bit annoyed with her. Again, the attacks are cool and I love the design, but it’s just not super fun (in comparison to other bosses) to actually play, in my opinion.

Grim's living fire things (or what i like to call hot tamales) actually have different face expressions, and the ones with angry eyes and large smile will jump

The root pack is personally one of the best bosses, imo. They’re the easiest to S-rank, and they have some of the simplest attacks, but it’s still fun to go back to them and it’s satisfying to use spreashot and EX’s to absolutely kick their a-

I think the hardest boss in Cuphead will always be Grim Matchstick and the best boss fight in my opinion goes to Baroness Von Bon Bon.

Captain Britneybeard and Esther Winchester are definitely my favorite boss fights. They’re just so fun! It’s chaos, but chaos with a pattern that i really love. Plus Esther’s design is just everything to me (along with her theme, it slaps)

For Grim Matchstick's second phase, there's both visual and audio indicator for his mini fireballs jumping.
1) they make a little "eee" noise when they're about to jump
2) along with the "eee" noise, you can see which one is about to jump by it squatting down
3) Finally, when they jump, there's an audible giggle
Heres a tip for Sally: Use the Twist-Up for her final phase or a homing weapon. Preferably Krack Shot.

With King Dice, I just paused the game right before the number I wanted to land on and then unpaused it and immediately hit parry right after to get the number I wanted. It always worked for me

My favorite boss was definitely the Moonshine Mob, because it is the embodiment of everything that I love in a fight: Beautiful backdrop, creative ideas, Hard but not insanely so, and, most importantly, an amazing theme. (The music is my favorite part of the entire Cuphead series)

The fight is so much fun on Expert, and to me, it felt like a perfect end to Air Fights in base cuphead, since you can either fight him or Cala as the last one.
The First Phase is so fun, the second is a nice breather to relax.
I LOVE Phase 3, a harder variation of Wally's attack (well, to me its actually easier than that.) It feels like an intense and fun desperation round!

That fucking die makes me mald more than Grim Matchstick and Dr. Kahl's Robot combined. It makes me do more bosses than I should and has made me "start over" almost 10 times throughout my gameplay.

Fun fact: Grim Matchstick’s fireball was supposed to only shoot out two fireballs, two horizontally or two vertically, but due to a coding error they shoot out two horizontally AND vertically.
It's very hard to see but the indicator for the fireballs that jump at you in Grim's fight are the angry eyebrows

There is a way to know where the fireballs in phase 2 of grim matchstick go they lean towards the place they jump so there is a indicator (I consider the phase easy)

I can’t agree with grim matchstick and junkyard jive being worse than intro bosses, I can’t believe king dice places so low.
When I replayed the game a few months ago (after not for about a year), I beat the game regularly in 5 hours, and I S-Ranked everything in a few days.

My favorite cuphead boss was the moonshine mob because of the macanics are very unique the music is amazing and the background and boss disign is gorgeous
2:28 this stage gets a giant increase in difficult if you play with sound, the fireballs make a noise every time they jump, so it can be very easy to know when you should dodge them with practice

The indicator is that the fire should be yellow and a evil is face. The orange-ish ones that are evil don’t jump, and the yellow ones that are scared don’t jump aswell. It’s just the direction that’s random.
I love how when fast forwarding you see sally stageplay, baroness von bon bon, and Hilda berg right after each other like in the song “You signed a contract”

Interesting Fact:In first versions of Cuphead were public DR KARL BOSS HAD 2 PHASES bcz modern 2 phase was just transformation between first and second phases so 3 phase WAS EVEN LONGER
For me in king dice my strategy to time it is once your number passes and it’s on the next one you jump and when you parry it matches up perfectly it’s hard to get consistent at first, but once you figure it out king dice gets so much easier as long as you have a few particular bosses you want to face
Saltbaker 2nd phase is honestly my favorite phase in all of Cuphead, it’s the only phase in this game which does something completely different with how you’re supposed to hit the boss, and I really love that, no other boss does that so, I applaud you Chef Saltbaker! For having the most unique phase in out of all of Cuphead!🤩

I’m sorry you said you weren’t going to rank them on difficult but the lower part of the list is litterly just the hardest bosses. There really fun and creative and there so far down. Sounds like you just don’t like hard bosses?
I mean, seeing how the easiest ones also made the bottom of the list, am gonna say he prefers medium-difficulty.

Hilda Berg is one of my favourite bosses, the concept is just so unique, I mean a zepplin that summons star constellations and becomes the moon? Also Phantom express mega unique, but the dlc bosses are all just awesome, they really outdid themselves there, but honestly, all bosses are special as they are
the guy in the plane platform you stand on is actually the little glue-bottle guy who INTRODUCES you to the *plane* levels

Just... Stay calm. It took me a fuck lot to beat this boss as well and with the dlc new weapons and charms... It still not easy. So the only advice i can give is that stay calm, if ya keep ya cool, think of weapons that can personally help ya, ya will beat the boss! And when i did... I was happiest enby in the entire house hold! Ya can do this! Don't let king dice intimidate ya!
@@miilexthemii9353 yeh, the worst part is I wasted one of the Game Djimmis. Because apparently beating one of his mini-bosses counts as a win
First goal,learn to time the dice, it doesn’t take much time to learn, then find your preferred fights,(I prefer fights 3,5 and 7 because of smoke bomb) Then once you get to king dice try to hug the left or right sides of the screen then alternate left to right after he finishes his attack, most of the time you will go under his arm and will completely avoid his attack, otherwise you better be good at parrying. Then just keep trying until you get the win
Get good at parrying if you want the “fun” part. To cheese it, just stay behind where his hand will summon cards from. I never did the cheese route tho.
I like the fact that Werner werman's boss fight has a lot of hidden WW2 symbolism, with Werner being somewhat based on Wittman, and the cat being based on the British.
Yeah, they reminded me of tom and Jerry too.
I like how they switched from the base game having a late Fletcher brothers character design with Disney style animation, to a more high budget disney animated movie, like Rescuers down under. Bosses like Goopy La Grande or Bon Bon feel like an animated short akin to Silly Symphonies (BBB was directly based on the Cookie Carnaval anyway)

Grim felt like a challenge to overcome, a rite of passage for the game

A lot of people have pointed out how Goopy was likely based on the iconic blue Slimes from the Dragon Quest franchise. Besides Goombas and Waddle Dees, they’re probably some the most basic minions that you can find in video games (RPGs specifically). While is doesn’t excuse how pathetic Goopy le Grande is compared to the other bosses, I think it’s supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek joke about him being one of the first (and easiest) enemies in the game.
King dice actually has timing for his dice which you are able to time.
His fight is amazing honestly.

Reason why I love chefsalt Baker is context all of his attacks in the first phase are the ingredients you’ve been collecting and the leaves are also the pineapplemint leaves
fun fact about the moonshine mob, both the spider mobster and the dancer bug were scrapped concepts reused for this boss, specifically the spider mobster was the gentleman spider seen in the trailer, and the dancer bug was the light, a boss concept where beams of light rotate around the boss and with multiple floors to move between
Def Mortimer freeze I hate fighting him but the animation when he rolls as a snow man is so satisfying and great animation
