I think Akira's storyline is sort of the ultimate example of narrative reduction in order for a story to fit a medium transition. Akira originally released as a six-part manga. And not just normal sized mangas, we're talking like world encyclopedia sized books. The Akira Manga series is Japan's version of the Odyssey. When Akira was made into an anime, the studio literally could not afford to make six movies or a television series. Anytime a narrative transitions from one media form to another there are bound to be certain concessions made. For example there are numerous characters who were core to the narrative of the manga that were reduced down to one scene or even just a background appearance in the anime. While there are certain elements of world building that are transitioned well from exposition to cinematic demonstration, there are many other elements that are just left unexplained or not even brought up. The Akira movie is certainly very visually impressive and it is definitely an iconic piece of animated history. I believe it is the first time we saw such a violent and gritty animated narrative transition from Japan to American audiences. But it has the same feel to it as the watchmen movie, where it just feels like there's some scenes missing, like the story doesn't quite line up. I know that the watchman was made as a multi-medium experience, meaning you are supposed to both read the comic and watch the movie to understand what's going on. I don't think Akira was made with that same consumption experience in mind. I think that just due to time and budget and constraints certain parts of the story got left on the editing room floor. If you have the opportunity, I definitely recommend reading the Akira manga, it just helps you get the full impact of the story.
Akira is one of the most legendary classic anime films of all time, like if there was a university course on anime, I feel like this one should definitely be required viewing, lol
I actually heard from a few people that were taking animation that they were shown Akira. Which is cool to say the least, it’s great to think that the movie of which I am currently hella interested in is basically the Gold standard of animation, to the point where people are taught how to animate through it.
This movie left such a huge impression on me. I remember how much American media played up on it's gory scenes, but I was happily surprised to see such a comprehensively well written story it had. I had always wanted to see what godlike power would really look like, and it's fully realized in this film. Without a doubt my favorite animated film ever made, and I love introducing people to it!
I watched this movie over 20 years ago and it still leaves an impression on me to this day. Such a unique and insane perspective on superpowers and emotional stability as a whole
The question I have is this, “ How might things have turned out different if he hadn’t been treated like a monster from the outset?”, I grant it’s been a long while since I last saw this movie in its entirety.
He became mentally unstable all on his own. No one did that to him except, perhaps, the psychic influence of Akira. The violent tendencies were just a symptom of his condition. Nothing anyone could have done or said would have helped. In the most ideal scenario the government would have kept him on the drugs that suppressed his power. He would have became dependent on them like the other children. Where would things have gone from there? He'd probably be studied in the hope that other people could gain these powers without the drawbacks. Living his life like a pampered lab rat and/or used as a bio weapon against Japan's enemies.
Regardless of how well or how badly the person is treated, the psychic powers in this story setting are implied to be ultimately uncontrollable by any being. That's why the first explosion at the start of the movie occurred. The psychic powers demonstrated by both Tetsuo and Akira are supposedly so infinite in scope, they say that in the manga that this anime is based on, that Akira (and maybe also Tetsuo?) eventually causes a Big Bang in another dimension and the start of an entirely new universe.
Exactly the fact the kids terrorized him when he has been kidnapped and hospitalized. Who wouldnt suspect everybody around them. Then the power corrupted him
De-escalation would require specialized attention: Tetsuo suffers from an inferiority complex. He's lashing out simply because this is the first time in his life where he can do so as much as it is a response to being persecuted.
I first watched Akira at the age of 5 on a bootleg VHS my brother brought home. I never understood the movie plot but I was drawn into the 240p over saturated copied version of the Official stunning animation we can see today in 4K print. The red leather jacket and bike scene had my attention. The fight scene's, the swearing and the way their body moved was far beyond the level of cartoons I was watching at 5 years old (Flinstones, Rugrats, Simpsons) IT WAS FROM THAT MOMENT - I got into anime and watched all the stash my bro kept (Ninja scroll, Street Fighter 2 and Dangioh) Syfy Channel showed Fist of the north star at 11pm and eventually Toonami showed Dragonball Z. Years later everyone in the school playground were talking about Arthur and Ed, Edd n Eddy but the only Anime they knew was Pokemon. I was watching them with judgment and sad eyes because by then our akira VHS was long gone and I could've led everyone to real world of Anime. It was not their destiny Then in 2003 Pioneer released the 2 disc Edition of Akira and I got it from HMV, I was around 12-13 years old but the old lady didn't even look at the 15 certificate. All she saw was a "cartoon" (LUCKY ME) This time around I was sure i would understand the plot. WRONG! I was still confused. I got the gist of it but I still had too many questions etc I went to my local library, put in a request and lo behold they ordered the MANGA set of AKIRA. I read it all. That shit got me depressed and thinking about society as a whole and mankind lol. The manga comes in 6 volumes which follows a richer and more thought provoking path. I then stuck on the dvd and just like the explosion in the beginning of AKIRA...... I was blown away
This right here is why I always encourage my friends to at least try watching anime..its more than a "cartoon" it's something that gives us a different perspective on life ,it shows us different emotions ,gives us a sense of being ,anime is an amazing art that should be shared....I'm just glad there are people who appreciate it and love anime ,godspeed to you and may you live a wonderful life.
@@celina1072 Thank you for the message. I couldnt agree more with everything you said, Akira specifically is a timeless classic and it still makes me laugh hysterically when I remember it was from the 80s! I had no business watching BERSERK or FIST OF THE NORTH STAR at 10 years old lol, but how the hell can any kid go from gritty and raw animation story telling to plain old Disney's Tarzan? Its a huge leap in difference both in culture and style. (fyi Disney holds its own Merit) However I got my friends and family into anime and seeing their reactions and growth spoke volumes. @@MissBunny850 well my take is this. When GITS came out 'I EXPECTED' and was 'NOT SUPRISED' by the quality of Animation and style. It was 1995, by then we saw CG being used in animation such as Lion Ling (1992). I wouldnt blame you for appreciating GITS over AKIRA, animation always improves decades later. Man, Tetsuo literally lost control of god-like powers because he's a crybaby about always getting himself into trouble. Hates his friends because they care too much. What a baby.
Does anyone else think that Kei and Kaneda have powers as well? Tetsuo got powers just because he was blown up by one of the psychics, while Kei was straight up possessed by one of them. And Kaneda was in a giant psychic explosion and he managed to live. And both of them glowed when this happened, Kei glowed green and Kaneda glowed white.
My favorite design was the city. Seeing a future like city like the ones in the media made feel so amazed and beautiful. Like a Cyberpunk character or a citizen from Spider-Man 2099

I finished the video. I must say, that was definitely interesting. I'm a little lost about the ending, I guess the psychic kids and Tetsuo made a different galaxy or died? A little confused.
@@lunasun1738 Akira contained Tetsuo in a new universe where he ascends into a higher plane of existence, the kids are there too, in the manga it's implied that they're technically all dead, it's hard and weird to explain, most of it is up to speculation really
It was so labor intensive to animate anything well, back then, that artistry was promoted. A good story, that would likely sell better, if it was more visually appealing, could justify the cost of both more people drawing and coloring, and much more skilled people doing so. Now, TBF, Akira is Kubrick level stuff. But, in general, it's mostly commoditized, today, with a few rare exceptions. Animation software made things quicker and cheaper, and promoted styles and methods that make the animators themselves interchangeable. That allows studios to hire animators cheaper. As a gradual change, it turned the industry into one of high volume output and mediocre quality, by and large.

Tetsuo's transformation still gives me nightmares till this day. Akira was years ahead of its time in animation, character development, and storytelling.
Like a lot of westerners Akira was my intro into Japanese anime. I was instantly hooked at about 8 or 9, but as awesome as it is, I will tell anyone the graphic novels are beyond better. When I got my hands on them I was dumbstruck. They are very different like in just the first novel, Tetsuo takes over the rival clown gang just so they can make enough capsules for him to keep his powers in check at the beginning. Highly recommend 👌

At the end of it, I was literally speechless, and nothing else ever left me feeling the same way
Akira is the reason why anime community in the West is surprisingly mainstream and not even a niche. It clearly had a strong enough impact that it reintroduced the general population into anime since the Astro Boy back in 1960s, and without Akira the movie, then the rest of anime at large would have been introduced much later in the West and would not have influenced the animation industry for much of 2000s.
If you have the opportunity, I definitely recommend reading the Akira manga, it just helps you get the full impact of the story.
what the yap
Akira is one of the most legendary classic anime films of all time, like if there was a university course on anime, I feel like this one should definitely be required viewing, lol
I actually heard from a few people that were taking animation that they were shown Akira.
Which is cool to say the least, it’s great to think that the movie of which I am currently hella interested in is basically the Gold standard of animation, to the point where people are taught how to animate through it.
This channel is a hidden diamond i hope it gets the attention it deserve
This movie left such a huge impression on me. I remember how much American media played up on it's gory scenes, but I was happily surprised to see such a comprehensively well written story it had. I had always wanted to see what godlike power would really look like, and it's fully realized in this film. Without a doubt my favorite animated film ever made, and I love introducing people to it!
I watched this movie over 20 years ago and it still leaves an impression on me to this day. Such a unique and insane perspective on superpowers and emotional stability as a whole
so akira used tetsuo to free himself so he can stop tetsuo, well played.
Ehh, not really, Akira is really not to blame, he didn't even plan for any of this to happen
This really gives off minute movies type of vibe and I love it
The question I have is this, “ How might things have turned out different if he hadn’t been treated like a monster from the outset?”, I grant it’s been a long while since I last saw this movie in its entirety.
Then the power corrupted him
Y'know, it's funny...
Outset is an anagram of Tetsuo
De-escalation would require specialized attention: Tetsuo suffers from an inferiority complex. He's lashing out simply because this is the first time in his life where he can do so as much as it is a response to being persecuted.
90s artsyle is not good such faces but the expressions and details is so lit, its so smooth that like ur watching a real life animation
LEAVE ME ALONE *metal sound * AHHH *metal sound and AKIRA * AHHHHHHH
I first watched Akira at the age of 5 on a bootleg VHS my brother brought home.
I never understood the movie plot but I was drawn into the 240p over saturated copied version of the Official stunning animation we can see today in 4K print.
The red leather jacket and bike scene had my attention. The fight scene's, the swearing and the way their body moved was far beyond the level of cartoons I was watching at 5 years old (Flinstones, Rugrats, Simpsons)
IT WAS FROM THAT MOMENT - I got into anime and watched all the stash my bro kept (Ninja scroll, Street Fighter 2 and Dangioh) Syfy Channel showed Fist of the north star at 11pm and eventually Toonami showed Dragonball Z.
Years later everyone in the school playground were talking about Arthur and Ed, Edd n Eddy but the only Anime they knew was Pokemon.
I was watching them with judgment and sad eyes because by then our akira VHS was long gone and I could've led everyone to real world of Anime. It was not their destiny
Then in 2003 Pioneer released the 2 disc Edition of Akira and I got it from HMV, I was around 12-13 years old but the old lady didn't even look at the 15 certificate. All she saw was a "cartoon" (LUCKY ME)
This time around I was sure i would understand the plot. WRONG!
I was still confused. I got the gist of it but I still had too many questions etc
I went to my local library, put in a request and lo behold they ordered the MANGA set of AKIRA.
I was a 90s kid so it was easy to grow up to adult material. I had no business watching BERSERK or FIST OF THE NORTH STAR at 10 years old lol, but how the hell can any kid go from gritty and raw animation story telling to plain old Disney's Tarzan? Its a huge leap in difference both in culture and style. (fyi Disney holds its own Merit)
However I got my friends and family into anime and seeing their reactions and growth spoke volumes. It was like showing a music fan Michael Jackson for the first time, how can you live not knowing the best of the best?
At the end of the day, we all are in this community and part of the popculture and its awesome to meet other fans. If you do have instagram then follow me on @cyberpunk_chill. Would love to show you my Akira themed room lol
Take care buddy!
I never got it either and don't know why it was hailed so much I mean ghost in the shell was so superior
You just have to remember Akira set the ground work for GITS to be GITS and also Akira came out during a time where its type of animation was not expected. Nothing matched it. It was the first. For that it would always be superior and god of animation.
Yeah brought home. Surprised you made that mistake. Good comment though.
Tetsuo is so entitled Kanada literally saves him so many times 🙄
Yeah he's a selfish brat
Thats the WHOLE point
Tetsuo don't wanna be saved by kaneda anymore
When I first saw “Tetsuo”? (Idk how to spell name) become a grotesque monster I was about 6-8. I thought it was honestly one of the most amazing things that ever existed.

Man, Tetsuo literally lost control of god-like powers because he's a crybaby about always getting himself into trouble. Hates his friends because they care too much. What a baby.
Akira is a classic. I love the movie so much I bought a manga box set. It’s a must read.
Animation recap thank you for your amazing content, You are probably the only entertaining youtuber I have seen in a while.
Kei is psychic but kaneda is not. Hence why the little girl is able to possess kei at first and kei was able to (breifly) fight against tetsuo.
Kaneda has the ungodly power of luck
They all have powers, that was the point. They just weren't necessarily 'awakened' to them as the narrator of the vid points out.
My favorite design was the city. Seeing a future like city like the ones in the media made feel so amazed and beautiful. Like a Cyberpunk character or a citizen from Spider-Man 2099
Yeah the city was pretty cool the society portrayed in the city is actually pretty shit though as explained by the general to the scientist in the elevator scene it’s almost a bit reminiscent of modern society
I wish I could live in a city like neo Tokyo

I don't have the attention span for shows and movies that much anymore, so things like this are much appreciated :3 I've always been curious as to what Akira is about, very pleased to at least have some knowledge about it.

“Great Power comes Great Responsibility.”
Akira, still a legendary anime till this day. Love the atmosphere, setting, everything about Akira.
They don't make anime-film like Akira anymore :(
Is not at the same level maybe, but what do you think about Ghost in the Shell?
What came first, Akira or DragonBall? I definitely see one of them were inspired by the other. This is badass, how have I never seen this?
Akira was the first Anime movie while Dragon Ball was the first Action Anime Show on the west.
@@shepherd9312 Akira wasn’t the first Anime Movie but It did make anime popular in the west same like DBZ

i found this film in the $5 bin at wal mart when i was a kid and was still new to anime, and oh boy what a watch it was! Classic movie
Gotta say that looked really cool, then really painful all at the same time.
This movie literally revolutionized animation.
It is also responsible for introducing me to anime, along with Princess Mononoke. But it was Akira that solidified my love for it.
Love the vids man, never seen this anime but glad I heard about it from you.
Akira was ages before it’s time. Masterfully done. I remember being a kid watching this not knowing wtf is going on but I couldn’t remove my eyes from the screen. Soooo gooood

Love seeing akira appreciation truly the greatest piece of animation we’ve ever seen
I'm not a zoomer TikTok user who came here from the "LEAVE ME ALONE" memes, just came here to say Akira is genuinely one of my most favorite movies of all time and it has really well-done animation
Finally, I'm sick of the "leave me alone" comments.
I came here because of Kaneda’s bike slide that contributed to many animation shows. Of course, I was curious to know more and ended up here. This film is such a crazy fever dream in a good way.
Tetsuo's transformation still gives me nightmares till this day. Akira was years ahead of its time in animation, character development, and storytelling.
How is this 30years old, animation is all I care about and this is actually insane, wow
this movie is one of the best story and atmosphere I had ever watched
Like a lot of westerners Akira was my intro into Japanese anime. I was instantly hooked at about 8 or 9, but as awesome as it is, I will tell anyone the graphic novels are beyond better. When I got my hands on them I was dumbstruck. They are very different like in just the first novel, Tetsuo takes over the rival clown gang just so they can make enough capsules for him to keep his powers in check at the beginning. Highly recommend 👌
Watching this movie blindly is a once in a lifetime experience.

there was a manga that came out 6 years before the movie, but i wouldn't expect someone who says "the anime/cyberpunk community" to know that.

this quality and smoothness in animation is only recently coming back. even outside of anime like watch some old cartoon movies like prince of egypt and peter pan like they’re old but they animations in them were so smooth and “unlazy” if that makes sense. like seeing everything here looks like sooooo much effort in every frame. it’s a shame that most of my 20’s was consumed with stuff that DIDNT appreciate this quality. glad it’s coming back in the shows like opm and aot

Akira is art.
I found about this movie from some sick graffiti that spanned the entire wall of a store I live near. I was intrigued by the description when I looked it up, but never got around to it by myself. Only later on did I watch it with friends and it was the single most intriguing and impressive piece of media I've ever watched.
It's basically the Squid Game of that era.
