This song and The Meat Puppets in general never cease to amaze me. I've been listening to these guys since the '80s.Maybe 1986 they came through town, and our band got booked to open for them. We were thrilled as we were fans. During soundcheck, we told them we did one of their songs on a regular basis. They were so flattered, they asked us to play it for our opening set. And as their last encore songs, they did that song and has us jam with them. What was a 3-minute song, turned into a 10-12 minute jam for a room full of Puppets fans. Was cool when Curt relocated to Austin here, and rounded up friends of mine to be in his band. I told Cris that in this video, by the shading, he looked like he and Elijah Wood could be brothers. At the time, he didn't know who that was. This song landed on a soundtrack for a movie called "Chasers." Fun movie, killer soundtrack. I later became friends with one of the actors in the movie. Had the chance to tell Curt that this person was in the movie, loved the soundtrack, and "Sam" was still a long-standing favorite song. Curt just kind of joked that this person couldn't have been that big of a fan. This person had never seen them live, and if they did...they never went up to talk to them after the show. I told him he had a point.
Nice. I used to live in Austin and grab Home Slice 🍕 with my son pretty regularly. Although I've met all the Meat Puppets except the Whole Foods drummer, I still think it's cool a literal guitar 🎸 God lives there in A town now.
Hard to think of band that evolved more than the MP. The first few records are pretty raw and simple.. The later stuff is just so clever and fun. My vote for best Phoenix band ever..
Yeah I’ve always been fascinated by their discography development. Started out as the rawest hardcore punk rock band ended out as a more alternative, hard rock and country rock band. So ahead of their time honestly.
Maybe they had a ridiculous statement to make about something they hadn't experienced possibly Sam had a different opinion that no one had ever considered important..........
They Had A Video TO THIS?!?!?!?!? God!!! I've been rocking this album since i found it for 2 bucks used in 99---can;t believe i never knew they had a vid to this til just now!!!
That would be small g gods, but yes. Now I'll have to re search through all of my mythology stuff but I think a Sam is a type of Archon and messing with humanity is exactly the kind of thing they do.

I just got introduced to meat puppets by a random Chris Cornell interview video, this song tells me that I got a lot of listening to do, holy crap they're great.
My favorite R.EM. tune, hands down. So favorite, in fact, that the first band some of my HS friends and I put together was called Example of the Finest, circa 1987.
this song randomly played was i was listening to music here on youtube. gotta say this is one of my favourite discoveries ever . cant believe ive never heard this song before.
This song is amazing. The only of it's kind for the puppets to. It's kind of like it's the end of the world for R.E.M. both super fast and only song for both bands. Both songs are extremely hard to keep up with and require tons of breath. LOVE THE PUPPETS!!
I saw these guys with Mike Watt. They truly are the "kings of distortion". Have to seem em live to really feel it. They did this song. Also did the songs Nirvana covered on Unplugged and each time said "This is a song from a famous rock band that WE ARE covering" haha when infact it was nirvana that covered their songs. Great humor. Music. Good guys

It's the sound of the words not the meaning. Meat Puppets knew all about semantics. They're the masters of semantics. A band that not many know but those who do know they are simply the best there is. I've tripped many times listening to them.
This was my introduction to the Meat Puppets, I was 16, must have seen this on 120 Minutes or whatever the equivalent show was at the time - had read reviews of Monster before this, but once I heard this, rushed up to Albany, to the Music Shack, and got the Forbidden Places cassette - was amazingly good and I couldn't fathom why it wasn't a big hit! Good on Nirvana for getting the Pups some more exposure a couple of years later.. still a favorite band!
Fuck yeah 120 minutes! that's basically my story exactly! I saw them live when they opened for Soul Asylum back in the day. I wore Dr. Martin boots and a flannel shirt
The Boys the Meat puppets have nothing to do with Nirvana, they were around years before and decades after Nirvana. If someone thinks the only reason the Meat Puppets are around is Nirvana it really shows a lack of music knowledge and willful ignorance.
Well, i heard this song for the first time today, also listened to it for the 20th time, that's freaking really cool, greetings from Australia (aka who are the meat puppets?).
This song still blows me away even after many years. Their ability to verbalize those crazy lyrics is mind-boggling to me. (I too saw them when they played in 2018, in Hamden, CT. I was hoping they'd play Sam, and they OPENED with it. I was pretty ecstatic. This has probably been asked, but who is the "Sam" the lyrics refer to? Sam Beckett maybe? (the reference to 'Milton' is literary), so that is my best guess. But doesn't totally 'feel' correct. Anybody know?
Actually, thinking a little further on this, the words kinda serm to be making fun of 'meaning' itself (and perhaps also people (like me?! 😅) who sometimes take things a little too seriously - oy!). Which, if that's true, then 'Sam' = Samuel Beckett makes more sense now. But again, this is just my best guess at this point.
I remember an MTV interview with Cobain. They extolled his talents and when asked a dumb question he just said, “No one will ever again write like the Kirkwoods. Then later heard this which may be made up. This guy said that he worked at Capital Records in LA. He said that the Kirkwood brothers were there one day to use the in house Telecaster for Sam. He said that was because this guitar was a ‘65 “whistler” and quite rare. For some reason which no one would dare mess with the guitar has a very high pitched whistling sound that certain players could coax out of it. Who knows?
PART 1: Maybe they had a ridiculous statement to make about something they hadn't experienced / possibly sam had a different opinion that nobody ever considered important / and damn it if norman and betty were listening somebody would have become a phenomenal / howling lightning tampering with electrical evidence shown to be relevant / possibly with the exception of ivory everyone else had abandoned the obvious / chipping away at erroneous garbage which definitely is as exiting as pudding /
Meat Puppets are a great example of highly skilled musicians with actual songwriting ability, not just boring technical prowness.
100% People often times assume just because a song is technically hard it means the song/song writing is good.
One of the most underrated bands of all time in spite of the great exposure that Nirvana gave them
I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that.
Benwah Gaming Hahahaha
heheehhe
Something about dishing up a dollop of dubious doo-doo. Yummy!
That’s Fukien funny Dude.

What song did your band play that was a Meat Puppets song?
💯 💶
Only brothers could have sang like that in unison - Long Live the Meat Puppets!
They opened their show in Seattle with this. Everyone's jaws dropped in the crowd.
Still looking for the karaoke track version of this song. :)
John Cutter I tried singing it. breathing between each section of dialogue is freakin impossible
Holy crap, karaoke to “Sam”, that’s brilliant
Haha
Did they ever do this song live? How could they pull off something like that?
@@daveleblanc3558 Yes and... they did it even faster than this at times! Just saw them do it a few weeks ago. Derek is back on drums!
Chris Kirkwood is such an underrated bassist that it should be illegal. ❤
They have 16 albums and a gillion songs. I love the Pups!
I know for II and Up on the sun and can you recomend
bobin bud They’re literally all rad. Favourites are Forbidden Places, No Joke! and Up on the Sun.
FaxanaduJohn Golden Lies and Rat Farm are underrated
Brilliant lyrics, tune, and band. Still doing it as of 2018, saw em play few weeks ago, they opened w Sam!!

No way! Awesome
I hate you with every fiber of my being.
Right on
Hard to think of band that evolved more than the MP. The first few records are pretty raw and simple.. The later stuff is just so clever and fun. My vote for best Phoenix band ever..
By a long shot best phx band
Ill even thumbs up my own comment on that
MP for sure and I'd also ad the Machines of Loving Grace.

they still play this song live...awesome
I cannot talk that fast, It must be a brother thing

Wow, they deserved so much more attention back then!
They always have such snap to their stuff. They can play any damn thing they want. This rocks and bounces.
I heard this song at an auction once. Another time I accidentally bid on a Picasso from the mosh pit at a Meat Puppets show.
Ventura CA 1993
i named my son after this song.
meat or puppet?
yes.
+Teddy Rannila O
that might be the coolest thing I've ever read on youtube. . . yep. definitely. :-)
I named my cat after the song and he loves it when I sing it to him word for word
In answer to any ridiculous questions, the MP's are Gods. More Q's?

Maybe they had a ridiculous statement to make
About something they hadn't experienced
Possibly Sam had a different opinion
That nobody'd ever considered important
And damn it if Norman and Betty were listening
Somebody would have become a phenomenal
Howling lightning tampering with the electrical
Evidence shown to be relevant
Possibly with the exception of ivory
Everyone else had abandoned the obvious
Chipping away at erroneous garbage
Which definitely is as exciting as pudding
Deliciously spooned from the lap of the ludicrous
Into the mouths of the question less idiots
Licking their lips as their eyeballs are rolling
And flapping their tongues as they're losing their marbles
That's the way Sam's play around
That's the way Sam's play
Someone who wasn't related to anyone
Twisted the facts till the truth was apparent
And dished up a dollop of dubious doo-doo
That sparkled like something folks scrambled to swallow
Slipping the rich through the eye of a needle
Is easy as getting a camel to heaven
And granny transgressing had blubbered a bibful
