Alla Pavlova, a Russian émigré to America, is one of the foremost female composers of our age. Her language, in the beginning close to the avant-garde, shifted to neo-romanticism from year 2000 on. Pavlova is not afraid of tackling the “large forms” of art music and her ballet Sulamith is not the exception. Composed over the version given of the Songs of Songs by Alexander Kuprin, it makes use Middle Eastern harmonies and melodies mixed with a neoromantic spirit.
Alla Pavlova, quien emigró de Rusia a Estados Unidos, es una de las compositoras más importantes de nuestros días. Su lenguaje, al principio cercano al vanguardismo, tomó un giro al neo-romanticismo a partir del año 2000. Pavlova no teme enfrentarse a las formas “clásicas” de la música culta y su ballet Sulamita no es la excepción. Compuesto sobre la versión del Cantar de los Cantares de Alexander Kuprin, ésta hace uso de armonías y melodías de Medio Oriente mezcladas con un espíritu neorromántico.

Just discovered this thanks to recommendation from colleague who has prepared a playlist of Ukrainian women composers on International Women's Day. Praying this nightmare is over soon for the Ukrainian people.
