Cyril Scott is regarded by many as the forgotten British Impressionist, mostly obscured by his contemporaries Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan-Williams. His symphonic poem Neptune is a revised version from Disaster at Sea, a musical honoring to the sinking of RMS Titanic, which happened on April 15, 1912 far of the coast of Newfoundland and certainly fractured the spirit of absolute certainty the British Empire fostered as one of its staunchest principles. In this revised version, Scott omitted most of the programmatic elements and replaced them with abstract imagery and reminiscences of tunes. However, there is a general sense of impending doom against the will and power of Neptune, the unrelenting God of Sea.

Extraordinary - based on my (limited) knowledge of his other works, this is not what I would have expected from this composer. Gripping, colourful music!

Other-worldly. Captivating. Reminds me strongly of Holst's Planets. Just the style of the times or.... one very, very influenced by the other?

My love for Exotica and it's roots (Lotus Land) has drawn me, or drawn me back to Cyril Scott. This would be an embarrassing statement, were I an embarrassable being. It would also seem a ludicrous pun to speak of the "depth" this piece has, but like a number of the early 20th Century, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist compositions, it has a great deal of it.

It's interesting to think that, if we take this as a piece about the Titanic (originally it was one, more or less), it was written about a tragedy that happened about 20 years before. Cyril Scott was in his 40s when the Titanic sank, and in his 60s when he wrote this.
Politics notwithstanding, something comparable might be writing a piece about 9/11 nowadays. And, in the other direction, imagine how 9/11 might be viewed in another 90 years.

This is a wholly satisfying performance of one of Scott's very best works (essentially written around 1920, though first performed in the 1930s). Of his orchestral works only (I think) the first movement of his 'Symphony: The Muses' shows comparatively mastery of the medium.

title of composition suggests that theme has something to do with water, to be more specific with see
