    LOL I have to agree with General on this. I did not watch entire video the first time. That tester is like 200-300 bucks to test a 15.00 part. To test on a mower you dont have to take it off the shroud. Just run the mower insert probe on DC output and other probe on the ground.
    Should read 14 volts. DONE. don't need anything. So why would you want to pull that off a mower to test it? As long as the mower starts you can test it, if it does not start solve that issue first (jump it, put gas in it etc)

    Believe it or not there are ways to test these things without this high dollar tool..Im old school so yep this is useless to me.

    It's appealing to have a device that's so slick. Unfortunately it does distance the mechanic a little from what testing is actually being done. But it gets the job done fast and finds a solution quickly. Nice demo.

    If we owned the test device in the video, we would probably have the manual that came with it. Testing wouldn't be a problem. I searched for "testing Voltage Regulators" because I didn't want to have to purchase special equipment. Isn't there another viable low cost way to test a small engine voltage regulator?

  • @teecraw
    @teecraw 10 лет назад +10

    That's all good and swell if you happen to have a "Voltage Regulator Tester" but some of us aren't in possession of such things. Is there a way to test a regulator with just a multi-tester and possible power supply? Stator is faulty so I cannot check regulator while on running engine by any measurable output. Would be nice to know if Regulator is bad to save another week or so of waiting for it to come after Stator arrives and THEN you find regulator is bad.

      That's the question I've been begging to answer. Here's what I have so far. The two leads coming out of the stator should have some sort of resistance, 24 ohms. If you get nothing, odds are there is a short in the stator. If you start the engine and measure the ac voltage coming out of the stator while connected to the rectifier, (terminals 1 and 3) you should receive some sort of voltage between 18 to 30 volts. The voltage going out of the rectifier which is DC voltage to charge the battery, is the middle pin and should be around 14 volts. You would measure the center pin and t chasis ground to get the reading.

    • @aggienodari453
      @aggienodari453 6 лет назад

      I figured you would need power going into the regulator to test. Nevertheless, in this case it was a faulty ground somewhere else.

    How will a regulator react if it tests high? I mean if its installed on a motor , what will the symptoms be?

  • @tomw1719
    @tomw1719 7 лет назад +3

    Correct me if I'm wrong but, on a Kawasaki the two terminals on the right are both AC and the single one on the left is the B+ so it goes B+ AC AC that's the way the plug from the stater comes out

    ❤ geez I wonder how many of us have one of those testers 🤔

  • @conradsigona
    @conradsigona 10 лет назад +2

    Various comments mention that this tester is stupid because you can just test the regulator with a multimeter. The answer is that you CANNOT easily bench test with a multimeter because the Kohler regulator/rectifier is more than just a simple 4 diode bridge. It also regulates! If you test the resistance between AC and B+ on a brand new unit, it will show 0 between one of the AC lugs and B+ and infinity between the other AC lug and B+. If you reverse polarity (switch lead on B+ from black to red or vice verse), you'll find the same readings, but on a real diode bridge changing the polarity would have flipped the reading from 0 to infinity or from infinity to 0 since the diode conducts in only one direction. Forget the multimeter diode test; it will make you mistakenly think every regulator/rectifier is blown.

      8Hp Kohler on a Craftsman lawn tractor, kept blowing fuses. Regulator puts out 21 Volts! So I replaced this module, double checked the ground and even double grounded it for temporary. Again 21V !! What gives? The old regulator was definitely bad, one of the "A" terminals is shorted to it's metal housing internally.

    nice little quick tester :-)
    Looks like a bridge rectifier followed by a reguator.
    Can be tested with a psu and bulbs+meter, but that tester is fast.
    the only thing it wont test for is a load test creating heat and breakdown,
    but that can be done on the machine i suppose.

    When using a digital multimeter with the setting on diode mark to test a three pin rectifier regulator, is the reading supposed to show zero across any of the AC/B+ pins pairs? Please help me with answers,I just bought a brand new rectifier regulator supposedly for John Deere Onan F930 on aliexpress online store but to my surprise one of the ac/B+ pins pairs reads absolute zero on a multimeter with setting on the diode mark.

    I don't know much about mowers I'm learning (the hard way like I learn everything else) but I've got two questions for you. 1 would a defective voltage regulator keep the mower from turning over and 2 if you're a "genius" like me and you don't disconnect the battery while you're working on the flywheel and you accidentally ground the stator will that fry the voltage regulator? I'm guessing yes on both but since I don't really know I figured I would ask somebody who did.

    • @THEMOWERMEDIC1
      @THEMOWERMEDIC1  6 лет назад

      The voltage reg has nothing to do with the engine turning over and the stator is grounded anyway so no harm there

    I found this video to be very helpful, I have a 40-year-old 16 hp Techumsy that I put on my struck mini dozer. There are three wires that come out of the engine on two of them I have 50 VAC at high rpm. Does the third wire go to ground or does the third wire go to the voltage regulator positive?

    Hey I have a John Deere LT155 with a Kohler 15 HP engine .
    The two white wires coming from the stator are butt connected into one wire that goes to the voltage regulator mounted on the side of the flywheel cover and the other A/C wire goes to the ignition switch.
    The problem is that both A/C wires have gotten so hot that the insulation has melted near the voltage regulator connector and the white A/C wire going to the ignition switch got so hot it became brittle and fell apart.
    There is a 14 guage ground going from the voltage regulator to the engine block, do I need to find a better ground?
    I do not see any diodes .
