I attended and was a member of a PCA church for years, and I loved it. I loved being Presbyterian and theologically conservative. Great people, good size church (not too big or megachurch-y), and always down-to-earth theologically rigorous teaching from the pulpit. Ultimately, I started realizing that the PCA has a little too much Baptist influence. At my PCA church, they said it was “up to the parents” whether they wanted to have their infants baptized and that there were a “plurality of opinions about this topic in this very church,” and it “isn’t essential for us all to come to the same conclusion on the issue of infant baptism and there is room for all in this church.” I thought to myself, “But we’re Presbyterians!!! This is a core distinctive and all who attend this Presbyterian church should be convinced in their hearts and minds on this central issue!!” This, and also the downplaying of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, which was viewed increasingly casually and ahistorically (“it’s just a symbol”). It irked me so much I felt like I had to go to a church that more tightly and unapologetically clung their historical sacramental distinctives. A long journey brought me to the Orthodox Church, where the sacraments and the sobriety with which they are regarded by all in the Church drew me in.
There are Presbyterians who will proudly display the logo of their PCUSA or PCA affiliation in signage and Sunday worship bulletins. I noticed that many Presbyterian churches who are silent on their specific denomination membership, which seemed odd to me. I was attending one Presbyterian church that switched denominations during my time there without notice to the general congregation. On church websites, while statements of what they believe are easy to find, denominational affiliation is buried in an obscured corner.
I was fortunate enough to attend the very first general assembly, when PCA was established as its own denomination. I was there representing women in the church. I remember it well. My parents and grandparents were parents were pastors in the, what my grandparents called, “The Old United Presbyterian Church”, before the Southern Presbyterian church.
