    I was raised in Marina, moved to Silicon Valley as an adult, and came back to care for my mom when the time came. I've now moved half way across the country for reasons I don't regret, but I miss Marina every day. I miss the smell, I miss the fog, and I miss running into neighbors and friends at the grocery store or post office. It's such an awesome town! I love that you're doing these videos!

    I think Saltwood Kitchen and Oysterette classifies as high end. I also want to highlight the diversity of ethnic restaurants in Marina because of the diversity of our population. We have the best Korean restaurants on the Peninsula as well as high quality sushi, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippino and Hawaiian options in addition to Mexican and even a pupuseria. We have great local diners to. The options for eating out are fantastic. Under amenities, we have the pump track, skate park and great local parks. We are an official tree city, with strong support to keep it that way. And we really do have amazing community. Finally, we are relatively tourist free. Marina is truly a great place to live. Thanks for highlighting that.

      Hey Alastair. I did film a little bit where I mentioned Saltwood and shot a scenesetter but the sound was pretty bad so I just cut that for the sake of the video. I agree it is a really nice place!

    Another comment: you speak of The Dunes area and the Target shopping center as “out of town.” It’s within the City of Marina (ending at Divarty St.) The area you walked through (under construction) is termed The Promenade.

    I was a refugee from LA who found Marina in 2017 and instantly fell in love. I ended up living there for nearly 3 years (before circumstances forced me back home, although I still go back twice a year to chill) and for a while thought I was in paradise; I lived right across the street from a charming pond, and another big park with a marsh (Locke-Paddon) and hiking trails was just a few blocks away. The town is as beautiful as Monterey but more down to earth, affordable, very safe, and has a great mellow vibe overall. I think you pretty much nailed it here, although I'd say two things--yes, there is a smell on occasion but it's very mild and never really bothered me, and also I would consider the fog that rolls in the summer to be a pro, not a con (I love fog--there's a dreamy, mysterious quality to it, especially as it rolls in just as the sun is setting). Also, I wouldn't consider the lack of high-end dining to be an issue either, since Monterey is literally less than 10 minutes away, plus the food in Marina is incredible--it has practically every cuisine for being such a small town (although you're right--no Indian), and the fact that it is so cheap at such high quality is a definite plus, not a negative. Anyways, watching your video I got a strong urge to move right back!

    Moved from the UK to Marina 11 years ago. Weather sucks, as does the traffic (on the whole peninsula), but other than that, it’s a good place to live (especially as there is now a local footie team!)

    I lived there from 96 to 98. I was a bartender at The Gold Rush. Crazy times!! The smell he’s talking comes from Gilroy Garlic Factorys when the winds come down from the the north and to to ocean. I can’t believe this guy doesn’t know that. Maybe he should take a trip to Gilroy. He’ll find the same smell there.

    Been a resident since 1966. Great place to grow up; fields of sage, chaparral and cattle, foggy wind swept coast line to get lost on and acres of Eucalyptus trees. So much freedom and so little direct supervision. "New" smell,? The compost digester at the land fill. "Old" smell, the Giodotti hog ranch that, ironically, was the neighborhood between Windy Hill Park and the Marina airport.(Formerly Fritzi Army Air Field) Always a bit piquant on a Nov. Morning with an Easterly breeze. Been around the world a couple of times and I always end up here. Spendy?. yes, but worth every dime.

      I grew up in monterey and marina and I have to disagree, primarily because rent is so out of control that young people are left with three options: stay with your parents forever, live with 40,000 roommates, or move away. Most of the people in my graduating class (2003) moved up to Portland because they couldn't survive here. At least not comfortably. It's a great area of you already have a good career, but it's real rough trying to move into adulthood when rent is so expensive

    Seems like there was traffic noise all throughout the video. Does that mean there’s a lot of constant traffic all over town or just where you chose to film? Also I noticed a lot of yards had dry lawns, was that due to the time of year this was filmed or some other reason?

    • @movingtomontereycalifornia
      @movingtomontereycalifornia  3 месяца назад

      I was around the main roads Reservation and Del Monte for some of the video so there's regular traffic there - most residential areas there's not a lot of traffic. Also yes your lawn will dry out if you don't water it (like mine) - it barely rains for like 8 months of the year. In fact Marina Coast Water District will pay you per sq ft of lawn you remove from your property and replace with 'drought-tolerant landscaping'.

    I grew up in marina and have lived almost all my life in monterey county. At least then ('97 - '03), marina sucked. There's nothing to do, especially of you're young, at the time crime wasn't great, and the whole town is built on sand (meaning you really need to do research before buying a home). Being close to carmel only matters to a tourist. Locals don't care about carmel at all (in fact, if you tell a local that you're from carmel, they are likely to look at you like you are a pompous a-hole). It really is a great area to live, but rent is wildly out of control and there isn't a ton of entertainment

    Concerned about the lack of transit. I hate driving, & having to use a car to go anywhere. Its great that there is plenty of new construction, & low income housing, but all it does is add more traffic congestion, which increases travel times. It looks like it could be bike friendly.

Moved to Marina as a student and it's great, close proximity to the school and relatively low prices compared to home in the bay area.

    • @lazloholt262
      @lazloholt262 4 месяца назад

      @Joyroute101 I've lived in the area all my life. Seaside had a bad problem with gangs in the 90s and early 2000s. But the county did a huge crackdown and largely got rid of them. There are certain areas of seaside I probably wouldn't be excited to walk around at night in, but 95% of the time, you'll be fine. Salinas still has some problems but even then, gang violence doesn't typically get extended to folks not gang-affiliated. Essentially, mind your business and you'll be fine in Salinas but I wouldn't really worry about it at all in seaside. The real problem is rent, which can easily be $3000/month+ unless you are lucky enough to rent from a friend or family member

      @@lazloholt262 Thank you for the information. The past still gives me the creeps. I was actually inquiring for my brother, who was hoping to move to Monterey to be closer to his son who attends the university, and he was considering Seaside. As for myself I purchased one of those $100,000 plus luxe motorhomes. No HOAs or rents. Paid cash. In a couple of years, (keeping the mileage) low I plan to sell it and that chunk of money would be used to build or purchase a tiny home to put on a small piece of land. Thank you again for your response. I truly appreciate it.
