Morph 4K Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing VS The RetroTink 4K!

- Опубликовано: 17 июл 2024
- The PixelFX Morph 4K has arrived and I am most interested in its handling of Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing. Since the release of the N64 Digital HDMI mod kit, Pixel FX's implementation has been lacking compared to the RetroTink lineup. So in this video, We will use a PS2 Slim modded with a PixelFX Retro GEM in direct mode on the Morph and RetroTink 4K to compare how the two devices stack up! For additional testing, we will pair the Morph with a RetroTink 5X to rerun the tests with Analog video to see if there are any differences. Results speak very clearly for themselves in these tests so I hope you find them informative!

the Morph definitely has some work to do with the motion-adaptive deinterlacing.
However, they really need to roll out that analog bridge... it should be less of a hassle for getting the best picture out of the Morph.
I would also like an on device profile saving system. I will never like web ui's for such things 😅
Thanks, been waiting for this.
Am going with the 4k
Seeing the HD video was very helpful for comparing the outputs. The screenshots everyone has been posting to Twitter just aren't conveying what's going on. Thanks for the great video!
Just getting into PS2 (still have some parts I’m waiting for, from Aliexpress sigh) so it is really nice to see these comparisons ❤
Which things you getting?!
@@ArchadesGames I got the official Sony expansion module, but it needs a converter to SATA to run a SSD. (The laser doesn’t work on the PS2 Phat I got, and I just got a bunch of games for it inc. Silent Hill 2 Special Edition - bleh) and a RGB scart cable from UK that just got caught in customs, doubling its price. 🫠 I plan to get a white PS2 phat one day, but it will have to wait right now, but I am really excited to finally try out some games!
Ahh nice!
So glad you showed the 5x by itself because I finally pulled the trigger on it a couple days ago and would be greatly disappointed if it produced the those random lines from the Morph results.
Still wish I had the budget to get the 4K though. (even more so after seeing the edge adaptive feature in action) Though I have to ask; is it just for interlaced sources?
The edge adaptive is for the Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing only. You can apply XBR smoothing on the 4K to help progressive sources.
@@ArchadesGames Ah, got it.
I know both features were tweeted about recently but I think my brain combined them into one thing.
You will love the 5X, Mike is still improving that beast!
Great video as always! Would you be able to do a recommended settings video for edge and motion adaptive deinterlacing for us RT4K users please?
Just use the default low sensitivity setting and tick on the edge adaptive setting and you're set!
Thank you for the video. I don’t make to big of a fuss over widescreen or normal mode. For ps1 ps2 I do PS3 CFW. Then use mclassic +4k gamer pro and I really like the results.
Great video nice to see some comparison between the too.
Thanks for watching!
@@ArchadesGames let us point out that the last update (compared to the one shown in the video, due to the jaggy quer I see) have practically disappeared on the experimental versions of RT4K, so the gap between the two is felt even more I think from now on!!^^
Yeah, how dare Mike release 2 new updates while I was making the video 🤣
@@ArchadesGamesthat bastard!
@@ArchadesGames his perseverance will ruin us ^^
That's a bummer. I had hoped the different options for deinterlacing would be more varied. Citrus3000psi has owned some really high end video processing equipment like the Crystalio II and I think some DVDO stuff. I know he just can't magic up solutions even if he has experienced some of the more high end options, but I really hoped he would be the one to create the best in class deinterlacing solutions. Hopefully the team over there can still figure out something to elevate the Morph and Ps2digital for 480i content.
As far as I know it's Woozle that handles the FPGA programming. Looking forward to revisiting this in future updates and after the analog bridge releases.
Just wondering since they just price dropped the morph 4k, has recent updates made it any better, I honestly thinking about picking one up now that its 275, I can pair it with the rt5x if needed. I havent seen much from the morph4k since people got them a couple months ago
The firmware still has issues and the deinterlacing isn't improved to where it needs to be yet. Interpolation options, HDR, and certain scanline functions continue to prove problematic. The latest test builds have also introduced overheating that requires the installation of a heatsink and fan if you don't want to risk breaking it. If you know you don't need the advanced features of the RT4K and the heat issues solved it really wouldn't be a bad discount option but right now they are treating all adopters as alpha testers and it isn't the best place to be. RT5X/OSSC Pro are my current recommendations for the $300 range.
@@ArchadesGames I have a 5x, looks like I will wait for next stocking of the rt4k. The over heating thing concerns me the most tbh.
Yeah the heat is bad... It's causing artifacts and drop outs after 10-30 minutes of playtime. This device was rushed unfortunately.
@@ArchadesGames thanks.. I didn't know the heat issue, which I take really seriously. so I would go for OSSC pro since I have retrotink 5x. thank you for recommendation.
I'm doing more testing on my unit and it doesn't get as hot as some others I am in contact with. My image is filled with tons of Blue and Green artifacts and theirs isn't though. I may post some images tomorrow after I run a few more tests.
Thank you Jerry!
Thanks for watching!
300 subs to goooo!
250 😉
Uh, left audio channel is much louder than the right? I flipped my headphones 180 to confirm... Fine after the intro.
It encourages comments so guess I will let it be.
What about the OSSC Pro ?
I don't have one to test.
@@ArchadesGames 😭
I think PixelFX rushed out the Morph to gain sales before Mike dropped a bomb onto the retro scaler community. The Tink 4K is an absolute beast. It's hands down the best you can get.
I'm not exactly impressed with my Morph, but the 4K is my main scaler, and the 5X is in my shop for testing consoles. The Morph doesn't get used other than passthrough on my second testing station.
I am inclined to agree with that assessment.
People get what they pay for. Thanks for sharing with us, take care.
Yeah... Thanks for watching!
I just see gorgeous games from a fantastic era with a green line down the middle
That is one beautiful 3 pixel wide perfectly 90 degree line! 🤣
480i is like the curse of retro gaming.
I’m giving this one to the RT4K.
The Morph has a lot of potential as a mature product.
Yeah, no doubt it will get better down the road!
I own both morph and retrotink 4k, id say both of them are great
Good stuff!
Retrotink 4K WIN ❤
For the amount of crap they talked on their twitter, this device leaves a lot to be desired.
You should see the discord 😅
GBSC
I haven't had a great time with the GBSC but I have been wanting to revisit it soon.
@@ArchadesGames What was bugging you?
The unit I had was always full of excessive noise and it never looked good. Going to try a different one at some point since mine was most definitely defective.
@@ArchadesGames Yeah, something wasn't right with that one. I built one myself and it works great apart from some defective parts from aliexpress and mistakes from my part. First clock generator I installed was not working at all. All noise I had was from powering it with TV usb ports. They cannot output enough current and image becomes corrupted because gbs doesnt have enough power. But I get you its not so plug and play as RT4k probbably.
I bought a premade one, I'd like to try and build one!
Morph creator said they are working on adding the edge adaptive feature. So Im assuming it will get handled eventually. Hopefully.
I hope so, we'll see.
OSSC pro?
Don't have one to compare with at the moment unfortunately.
🙄
I actally think if morph keeps getting updates it has the portential to be the better option because of the modular easy to repair and replace analuge inputs.
A fair assessment but what are you doing to break analog inputs so easily?
@@ArchadesGames The headphone socket and the scart socket would be the bigger concern. They can be dodgy just by use over time.
It defo has great potential and one I'm watching. I have been holding off for a while, just waiting to see what the reviews are like and when firmware is bug free and promise fulfilled. I already have a Tink4k and want this purely for the digital ecosystem. Shame, so far the DV stuff is not there yet. My PS1 Digital doesn't even have a DV option yet.
@OwlDaftUK Ahh definitely true, the Scart mount screws have me sufficiently less concerned than other devices but stuff happens.
Do you own any consoles with GEM or Digital mod?
all of my retro consoles are hdmi modded
so, nah it doesn't defeat the purpose of a retro scaler
Congrats to you, too bad everyone else in the world doesn't. Your niche experience is not the majority.
@@ArchadesGames wow so touchy champ, it's almost like the morph 4k's initial release was intended to complement their retro gem which for those of us "niche" people are concerned works brilliantly!
You realize I have bought and installed every single one of their mods as well right? If inferior deinterlacing performance, interpolation and incorrect aspect ratios are "working brilliantly" for you more power to you. I demand more from my purchases than promises of future glory.
It looks like the only difference between deinterlacing on a morph vs a retrotink is the Edge Adaptive feature, which appears to be halfway between line interpolation and antialiasing. I like to integer-scale everything + disable line interpolation to get the pixels as sharp as possible. So for myself I'd probably disable Edge Adaptive in the deinterlacing settings. Also if you skip to the 5:10 mark in the video, you can see that neither the morph nor the retrotink are great at deinterlacing fingers.
I was also seeing random horizontal lines which neither the 4k or the 5X when shown by itself had.
"it kinda negates the purpose of a retro gaming scaler to not have analogue inputs"
I looked on their website out of curiosity and they don't mention it's use case as a "retro scaler" under its product page. They only use the word "retro" once and they're saying it could be used to downscale modern HDMI sources for a "retro demake effect". If you look at the information page of the Morph4k+Analogue bridge, THAT is where they advertise it as an RETRO analogue scaler.
I use the Morph4k primarily with my Nintendo Switch and use my Retrotink with my N64 and Wii. Just because this product (without the analogue bridge) CAN be used to upscale retro games (480i), doesn't mean that's the PRIMARY intended use case, and the product page proves that imo.
That's some nice mental gymnastics you're doing there 😂 hope the experience is less buggy for you than it is for me!
@@ArchadesGames no need to be defensive, I’m not arguing it’s a perfect product. I think the narrative that a lot of reviewers have is just a bit flawed when they expect it to work as well as the Retrotink4k, when it’s not advertised to be for the same use case (yet). Otherwise, the side by side comparisons were good in this video; I think it’s important to show the weak points in a product so that it can be addressed, which is good for the community since all we really want in the end is good quality scalers & options 👍🏻
I direct you to re-read their landing page for the Morph 🤣 www.pixelfx.co/morph4k
@@ArchadesGames I read that as well. If you cntrl+F you'll see that they mention it only twice (3rd doesn't count since they're specifying it's compatible with the "retro-gem"). 1st they mention is talking about the Morph4k line of products in general, which yes, is compatible with retro gaming (480i) since they will be releasing the analogue bridge. Then 2nd time they mention is in the information about the Analogue bridge, which makes sense because it's introducing analogue inputs. But still, as I mentioned, when they are SPECIFICALLY talking about the Morph4k (without the analogue bridge), they are not touting it as a PRIMARILY a retro-game (480i) scaler.
I'm trying to level with you here but it seems like you're a little more emotionally responsive in this discussion when all i'm trying to do is look at it non-biased objectively (since I own both products) so I think i'll stop replying here. As i've proven, in the case of its specific product page, AND it's information page as you've pointed out, it is not advertised as being primarily a retro scaler; That is reserved for when they are discussing the morph line (which includes the analogue bridge) or specifically advertising the analogue bridge. Have a good day 🙂
Lol you claim I am being defensive when you came in to literally argue semantics in defense of a product that has been aimed at the retro market since it's announcement in 2020/21. The projection is strong with this one. Thanks for all the extra engagement credit regardless.
