IMPORTANT: If you tried everything in the video but have "headphones" indication even when you don't have headphones inserted, your iPad might moisture in the headphones connector. Try inserting and removing your headphones a few times. Also, be sure the docking connector (where you charge the iPad/iPhone) is clean: use a dry toothbrush to remove any dust/dirty particles from the bottom connector. Keeping the iPad in a plastic zip bag with some silica envelopes for a night might help in the case of moisture messing up with the headphones detection or the external docking audio detection.
INTERESTING: The side switch (or the 'silent' in Control Center) doesn't mute content such as videos in RUclips - this is expected and explained by Apple in its documentation... but it causes some confusion as Apps get silenced and people don't understand why since videos plays sound but apps are quiet.
Steps to solve sound problem presented in the video:
1. Put the side switch UP (so it doesn't show the red mark, which is 'mute/silent')
2. Put the volume all up (lateral buttons)
1b. If the side switch is used to lock the rotation of the screen, use the Control Center and be sure the 'silent' (cut bell) is off (dark).
2b. Put the volume all up.
3. Close all the running apps
4. Reboot the iPad/iPhone

Thanks! On my newer iPad, there is no side button for mute/screen lock. However, when the "Control Center" is launched, by swiping up or swiping down (see Settings), the Mute Icon (like a Bell with a line through it) could be seen, and Mute was turned on and colored Red. Clicking on the Red Mute Icon, the iPad's sound was set back to normal.
Also another usage note: Under Settings >> Control Center >> 'Included Controls' _or_ 'More Controls' ... The "Silent Mode" function (for displaying the Red Mute Icon) was in the 'Included Controls' grouping, for the Control Center. If the Red Mute Icon for "Silent Mode" cannot be seen when the Control Center is launched, this can be added to the Control Center under Settings:
Just add "Silent Mode" from 'More Controls' to 'Included Controls' by tapping on the Green + switch for "Silent Mode".

You may have covered this elsewhere, but I solved my problem by checking my Airplay settings. I have a sound bar on my TV that uses Bluetooth to connect with my Apple devices. So, whenever the sound isn't working on my iPad, I just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and check the Airplay setting at the bottom of the bar. Usually it has selected to play through the soundbar, and when I select the iPad, the sound returns. So, be sure to add this to your list of things to check!

Hi +Katherine Correll, the Control Center is super useful! On the iPhones it is even more interesting: allows you to use the 'flash' as a flashlight and there is a shortcut for the calculator :)

This is awesome dude!. You saved a big hassle. I didn't realize there is a small mute(red button) above the volume. My daughter switched off by mistake and i reset the OS many a times and there was no luck.

For the comments I receive here, I really believe this is one of the reasons Apple removed the side switch on the iPad Air 2... a lot of people muted the iPad by mistake! Oh, the dislikes! They puzzle me - I wish I could have separated metrics for: "I didn't watch the whole thing, so, Dislike!" ... "It helped me but I feel like you just mocked me! Dislike!" ... I had a similar problem..my iPad was echoing and was sometimes making weird beeping sounds when I pressed buttons etc. I had a problem and thought there was something in my sound holes at the rear of my iPad! But you have saved my life with the REBOOT! I can't thank you enough! Subscribing!

Spent ages trying to fix sounds on two apps to no effect. About returning an iPad when sound problems happen: in the vast majority of the cases, sound stop working due to software glitches you can quickly fix by closing all apps and restarting the iPad/iPhone - just a couple of minutes. To replace the iPad/iPhone you would need to backup and later restore all its contents, which can take more than an hour... Sound problems happen quite often (even more if you are a developer working/testing your apps; or if you play a lot of games), so I would only go to the Apple Store and replace your unit when you suspect of a hardware problem: you tried the steps in the video and you continue not having sound.
Hi! I did everything in this video that you showed but there still is no sound for me. I closed all the apps and pressed the control center to which the mute button is not highlighted meaning it's off. The button on the right side is also off and not showing the orange dot. I pressed both the home/power button as you showed and had it powered back up and after it came back on there still was no sound. It works with headphones plugged in but not without them. I'm confused and really mad right now about this.
Thanks for providing lots of details. I wonder if your iPad has a 30-pin dock connector... if so, try to use a dry toothbrush to really clean the dock entrance - it is easy to accumulate dust/dirt/moisture... and it makes the 'ipad think' it is connected to an external sound system... cleaning it can get it back to the internal speakers. I really hope you can have it working soon!

My problem is similar to the person above, and I tried the solution you offered (to clean the docking port) but didn't work. My iPad does not show the sound controller within the Control Center, (0:38) but it appears when I connect my earphones. As soon as earphones are disconnected, the sound controller part disappears from the Control Center. I wonder what the problem it is.

Awesome 👏 But reseting/rebooting is actually just like “turning it off and on again” - on daily basis the iPad is never turned off, just put on “hold”. Reformatting would be erasing everything on the iPad and starting over, installing all your apps again, and setting your accounts, etc.

The replacement iPad had the problem at the beginning, but after hard reset it was fixed, and so far working great on iOS 8.3

Hi Raymond! I am glad it helped! I spent quite some time dealing with sound problems on iOS... The Sounds we created for MaxiCalc (the calculator you see in the video) are a very important feature in our app - and very often we received angry emails about sound. Most of the times people just forget the iPad in mute.... But SOMETIMES, the iOS sound system gets really messed up. Don't feel defeated - it took us A LOT of time to figure out the simplest 100% effective routine to always "fix it" back.

ThatOneGamerYT exactly, it is confusing. On the documentation Apple now are explaining that "Music, Podcasts, Movies, Videos and TV Shows" still plays sound even when it is muted - but IT IS confusing if someone never read that before. Here it is: support.apple.com/en-us/HT204171
