I've used your Lowne Aerospace 2 guide to get back into KSP (after a 4-5 year hiatus, when I used to watch Scott Manley!) and it was very very helpful. Hey, a fellow 80km orbiter! I have always aimed for that height for interplanetary stuff (unless I want to burn straight to an outer system planet). I'm sure it's not OPTIMAL, but "good enough" is the KSP motto! :D
I tend to do the same... just because long escape burns often have you pointing towards Kerbin a bit and it drops your Peri.... being at 70km for that would see you dip into the atmosphere which would be much less efficient than just being at a stable 80km in the first place. I have an Asteroid Mining/refuel station at 100km too for when I want to get serious with interplanetary SSTO's (I just started the game a couple weeks ago)
You should make a rover that has multiple modules that can function independently, and then make it so it can separate into different pieces so you don't have to haul a really big mobile base if all you're doing is mining.

When you came out with the Mun Machine mobile base I upgraded it to connect to a transfer stage to take it to Duna. Added a bunch of parachutes and good to go.
Matt, I know this isn't part of Destination Duna but I challenge you to make a Laythe base WITH a landing pad next to it I tried but its really hard. good luck!
When you speak about transfer windows, could you add line in something like paint ? Juste some quick informations. When you say (that angle) I don't even know the planet order and I could appreciate a really quick drawing :)

You called Duna rust-red. There is a reason why it is. Duna is the KSP analogue of Mars. Mars has an iron-rich surface. Rust is oxidized iron. Mars effectively has a rusted iron surface. So Duna, being its analogue, has effectively rusted as well.

My question is, have you put a meteoroid in synchronous orbit of Kerbin? if it's the answer yes, you've built a base on it, if the answer is yes, have you tried to hook several meteoroids to the first and then expand the base? and if yes, could you make a docking point on that base to deposit the rocket phases you throw away in space with fuel to build other ships with those leftovers? I think a shipyard is the answer to filling the space with screws, fragments of fuel depots and engines waiting for them to fall to the nearest planet, thanks

If you are wondering why Mars/Duna has a rusty colour, it is because The surface of them is made out of Iron Oxide A.k.a Rust.
