This is an excellent idea! The cougar 5th wheel already has carpeted steps there, but now it's time to go and see if there is a way to turn that into storage! Thanks for the idea!
Imagine this, My first night in my RV. I wake up feeling great content ready to start the day, and then I get off the bed... More like a quick slide down, into the wall, onto the floor. You know this is at 4:00 in the morning, I tried so hard not to laugh but I couldn't help it I had a great big belly laugh.
I’m a new subscriber and I’m loving your videos! Thank you this idea. We have a little dog that sleeps with us and he always has a hard time getting up on the bed. I’m going to make one like this (slightly modified for my space) to make his life a little easier. This is a great idea.
Mark, the sides and back of the top piece was cut flush and the top was secured using a little construction adhesive. I pulled the front lip over and used 1/2 staples from a heavy duty stapler to secure it. It’s holding up perfectly. The front exposed piece is also stapled but you can’t feel the staples because they are so deep through the carpet so you could probably use them on the top instead of glue. Once everything was done I used a lighter to heat up the cut edges so the would not fray.
Hi Ross, awsome idea. I have the same bedroom in my Jayco Jayflight 28 BHS. I am going to build this storage boxes on both sides of the bed. Thank you, now i have another project for my trailer. Greetings from Calgary.
Hi Ross. We are new to your channel. We have a GD 2500RL which is similar to your rig. Your storage solution is an excellent idea. It looks like original equipment. Our rig is in storage for the winter but your mod made the list for 2022. Thank you.
Nick, I think they were 4x3 or 4x2 sheets... cant remember exactly but it was not efficient lol. They had to fit into a hatchback (truck was in the shop).
its great, until you realize a week later, like I did, you should have gotten twice the materials since you have to build another one for the other side of the bed. 🤦♂️🤣
Wouldn't it be better to split the top in half and use a brace in the middle so you can open it up and One side at a time it will increase the amount of weight that can be put on the top because of the center brace you only lose about 3/4 of an inch of space
You could, but with the top resting on all four sides and it being 3/4 pine it will hold quite some weight. It doesn’t even flex and I’m 180 lbs. but that’s a good idea for heavier people. The divider will prohibit larger items being stored in there if that’s something you want to use it for though. Thanks for the idea Derry.
no, youre looking at the working area dimensions. look at the locker floor dimensions, they are 23 1/4 by 23 1/4. so you take 3/4 off that and left with 22 1/2. where the working dimensions come into play (the 24" you are referencing) is the the top of the locker. it is 24" long, will stick out 3/4 of an inch past everything else (23 1/4) so you have a lip to pull up on. make sense?
We did basically the same thing a couple of years ago. Works great and gives that little bit of extra storage and makes it easier to get out of bed. Glad you did it.
this is the wife, my hubby made a 8" platform all around the bed after the first night and l slide out of the bed to the floor hitting my head on the wall,, lol l'm only 5' so for me that is a long way down, lol. He made it so that we can lift it up in 4 spots to store things, and it has been wonderful for that.
My wife and I have the same model and together we built and installed last weekend. Testing this weekend and due to the height of our bed and being vertically challenged these are a tremendous game changer for my wife and even the dog. Love the extra storage benefits too- now our shoes are out of the way.
thats a good idea, i thought about that, but we only have plugs in the way when we go to bed. after that they are put away, so i dont ever have to unplug them to open.
Brilliant , if you don’t mind I will be copying your design and layout this Spring , as my Bride is only 5’ , and we have a 10.5”queen mattress, this will accomplish a lot of things , Thank you
Love the idea but could never do it. Our dogs sleep on each side of the bed and my wife would kill me if I took that space from them. 😆 It's a pain because we have to slide off the end of the bed to get out of the bedroom.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Ditto for one of the dogs. But, if my wife ever threw me to the curb, the Siberian husky will end up with me. At least I'll be warm at night spooning with him. 😝😝😝
Man I just love these custom build videos Ross! You did a great job, as always, and it looks fantastic! I really enjoy when you make these type of videos because it helps spark my creativity and courage as to what I could create in my rig. Great job!
Absolutely love this project! I was looking for a solution to having some sort of step to get up on the bed and this idea with the added storage is a win win. Thanks for all that you do!
The bottom adds more support to the entire structure so it could be stood on. Remember the top is not fixed so even when it’s closed is does not add support to the sides. Also, the bottom distributes the weight across the entire floor. Without a bottom theres pressure only where the sides, front and back are. That could be a problem for heavier folks and really chew up the floor. The structure is more solid and that’s more important to me than 2 pounds of weight.
The idea is a good one except that I am looking for an rv without a step on the side of the bed so I can get in there to make the bed. You just took away that ability
It’s actually easier to make the bed, you are taller and can reach the corner of the mattress easier without having to slide it out. At least for us it is, much easier.
Brilliant!! Thank you so much for sharing!! I love your videos and really appreciate the effort you put in them!!
Glad to help and appreciate your support Jeff!
Glad to help and we appreciate your support Jeff!

OMG to be able to stand on that and make the bed!!
it is SO MUCH EASIER to make the bed!!!
I’m making my husband do this yesterday!
Good luck!!
I would like to seen how you attached the carpet, especially how you wrapped it around the edge of the plywood.

No problem 👍
DAMN NEAR BRILLIANT!
Thank you!
Best modification I have seen to date ! on a camper great idea.
Thanks for watching and the nice comment!
Can never have too much storage!
Agreed!

Very nice job 👍 looks factory
as always, thanks for stopping by Corey.
This is just what we need … thank you.
You’re welcome, Joy!
Awesome that you did it step by step, as a solo woman I will be able to do the same in my motorhome
Awesome, let me know if you have any questions!
So smart! Thank You
Thanks!
That is amazing.
I always thought that area could be better used. Great idea!
Thanks Ryan!
Great storage solution! 😁
Thank you guys! Still loving the 2150RB that Keith Baker sold us!
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS We're so glad to hear that! 😊
Great idea! Might be my next project 🤔. I certainly like how you have it hinged, good thinking! 👍🏻
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching Kevin.
How did you get that nice finished edge on the top of the carpet on the front kick board? Was the carpet salvaged from a rug?
Great eye Anthony. It was a large area rug, the only carpet I could find close to the color of the carpet at the couch.
Great one! May I ask specifically what size wood did you originally buy to cut down? Thanks!
Nick, I think they were 4x3 or 4x2 sheets... cant remember exactly but it was not efficient lol. They had to fit into a hatchback (truck was in the shop).
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELSthanks! You made it work though 🤪
So not fair. I can't do this task. May I purchase one from u
Where do you live Linda?
Wow, that looks like a great solution for storage! ~ Shion and Matthew
its great, until you realize a week later, like I did, you should have gotten twice the materials since you have to build another one for the other side of the bed. 🤦♂️🤣
Not only is this genius, it looks easy to do. RV manufacturers should put these in from the factory.
it is easy. The carpet was the hardest part.
Love this! Keep up the great content.
Glad you liked, thanks for watching!
Great idea and execution, Ross.
Thanks Brian!
Great idea for you guys. Knocking out two birds with one stone. Crushing it on the channel by the way! 👍🏼
Thanks guys. Still have to build the other side, but it’s parked so I have time. You guys are doing great too!
I don't own an RV but will make this for my bedroom in my tiny apartment.
Sweet step / storage! Well done.
Thank you!
Great idea for much needed storage. Im going to build that ! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed Gus!

Great job and a great idea. Am considering this upgrade in my Grand Design TT.
Thanks David, good luck!
I'm looking to remove the side tables of the bed ..because I can't get to my cabinets of each side ..😢 can u help .
We have a 2021 Grey wolf camper
id have to see it in person to help with something like that
shouldn't the side pieces be 23 1/4 x 8 ? 24 inches less 3/4 for the back piece?
no, youre looking at the working area dimensions. look at the locker floor dimensions, they are 23 1/4 by 23 1/4. so you take 3/4 off that and left with 22 1/2. where the working dimensions come into play (the 24" you are referencing) is the the top of the locker. it is 24" long, will stick out 3/4 of an inch past everything else (23 1/4) so you have a lip to pull up on. make sense?

Personally i would have created it as a drawer that way you dont have to go unplugging everything just to grab your favorite book ect.
thats a good idea, i thought about that, but we only have plugs in the way when we go to bed. after that they are put away, so i dont ever have to unplug them to open.

Why make a bottom and not just use the floor, save a pound or two.

79 - 80cm Bed hight is the perfect hight for making good times with your wife... Try it.
