I think it would have been a good idea if they added a little more individuality to the characters. For example, the Inklings could be immune to/more tolerant to the ink attack, and King Boo could be resistant to the ghost taking items.
Sounds cool but it would make it incredibly unbalanced, I'm assuming that characters like Mario and Luigi would get better effects when using mushrooms and/or the flower and Bowser and Koopa Troopa or other turtle-like characters would get better shells effects. That would make those characters extremely good because mushrooms and shells are default items that everybody gets all the time, the inklings and King boo (or any other character like Puppy-bitch or Link) would barely have a significant advantage in that regard since their items are uncommon and situational.
They would have to redesign the items, the item drop rate, and balance everything, otherwise one or two characters will end up being OP. This is just Mario Kart, not Overwatch.
