As technology has evolved over the past two centuries, so have our expectations about privacy. This new digital world allows us to connect with each other with increasing ease, but it has also left our personal information readily available, and our privacy vulnerable. Cultural norms have pushed us all online, seemingly at the mercy of whatever terms of service are put before us. Cookies and tracking allow companies to collect limitless amounts of information about us, often more than we'd share with family and friends. And in the push for national security, the government has collected vast amounts of information as well, often without our knowledge. With the NSA leak reigniting this important debate, we take a closer look at the state of privacy in the digital age.

I don't buy this argument that if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about. Does your privacy in and of itself have no innate value?

What is great is that, here in America, a large number of republicans AND democrats are both agreeing that the NSA should not be doing this. Finally, congress can agree on something!

What are the other programs that are going on that we don't know about? This is a what if, but it just shows that secrets are no good and they only create doubt, and I don't want to doubt my government.

As long as there is social stratification and inequality, there will be privacy concerns.

Great video, but the title is not quite right. I should be "Online Privacy: How Did the USA Get Here?". Almost all of the video was exclusively about the situation in the USA.

Great video, for a new generation or ppl who have been "absent" for the
last 14 years. Who knew that the NSA mandate was to exceed its mandate?
When Cheney Bush hired a post 911 army of private contractors in addition
to the NSA as an unofficial stimulus to Virginia, Maryland & DC what did ppl expect. PRISM started in 2007. Google "Tom Tomorrow on NSA & your computer from 1994". I got it from Schneier's blog. Apparently they & many others
(novelist Margaret Atwood) assumed the internet would be used as an NSA platform.
Ed Snowden timeline & events not often mentioned:
    1) Snowden was in touch with Greenwald a month b4 he got the job at
Booz Allen Hamilton. He gets the job at a one of the few places that hasn't
    updated employee security measures.
    2) Obama appoints a panel to report on the security in triplicate permanent intel government in March 2013.
    3) Snowden leaves for Hong Kong in June 2013.
    4) Wired does its NSA "Gods of War" cyberspace security PR issue in July 2013
& probably commissioned months b4. It makes no mention of Snowden.
    5) Obama gets his commission report from March.
The Sequester cuts on the "deficits don't matter" Pentagon & Intel budgets
will probably NOT be allowed into effect but are scheduled.
A % of Pensions & healthcare at very profitable defense contractors are
subsidized & paid for by the government/ taxpayers for the past 30 years
    or more.
Who else, if anyone, was Snowden in contact with b4 he got the job? After?
If any elected politicians are involved we will never know about it.

This episode felt pretty biased. I am 100% in favor of privacy, but good discussions should at least mention varying points of view. Otherwise great episode as usual!

Do people (especially employers) really think there's something wrong with you if you don't have a facebook account?! Why?! Convicts don't have facebook accounts? Did people think you're weird if you weren't listed on the phonebook?

Anti internet day? Internet services help the NSA and we help these services stay a float. So if we make a day or week, they'll show that we are serious about our privacy. Suggest the idea or change it up.

And then you keep a low profile and blend into the woodwork. If you are insignificant or you mind your own business you start to realize no one cares away.. Its also about Keywords.. Be care careful not to say certain words.. You don't want them to get any red lights.. Its out of control now.. There was a time when there were a few Lawyers in Washington now everyone is a Lawyer..

The sad thing is that it's been almost twelve years and now people are starting to wake up. Unfortunately that NSA data center in Utah will finish this year. There's no way in hell they will close that. Outernet, darknet, offline.

It's funny because that quote can be used to argue both points of view. Just goes to show how it's better to talk about the issues at hand instead of throwing around random quotes which are mostly generic statements playing with words instead of meanings. :P

did i insult you? my tone was far from insulting and yet you answer me with an insult? I would go into explaining game theory is what better models behavior than your physics analogy but obviously you feel the need to put down others to make yourself feel better instead of discussing ideas - i guess that's just YOUR nature BUT i don't have time for that - cheers and if you reply it should be in a constructive tone otherwise it will be ignored.
