This was so incredibly fascinating to me, and so very relevant today. I am proud to say that I am part of fandoms, but I find that a lot of people like to judge and that isn't cool. I loved how adults analyzed fandoms and brought their beauty out for the world to see: it doesn't make you weird, because all a fandom is is people getting together and loving something. Don't we need more love in the world anyway? I know that personally I have made many new friends that I have met through my fandoms

Wow, this is amazing stuff. PBS should do a series of videos focusing on different fandoms and the separate sections of each, breaking down their place in the overall fanbase and expanding on what form of public reaction it might stir up. You've shown bronies like me in general, but give some spotlight to the humanizers, the Tumblr RP blogs, and maybe even the clop artists to show the many ways in which a fandom can branch out. This is a subject that requires deeper investigation.

I don't mod anyone's fandoms. As long as they are doing what they love. Fandom gives us art, music, animation, and so much more. I love how they put homestuck in there for about 5 seconds. XD

There are always 2 oposite sides, like day and night, life and death.
There is always someone or a group of people with diferent ideals that doesnt like the ideals of the other group.
Some people just cant get along with each other, until one side is eliminated the other just cant go on with its life.
Its quite depressing to realise that war is a necessary "evil".

AWESOME and openminded video and view on fandoms. Am a Brony personally and I was admittedly surprised to hear that Transformers supposedly have many female fans. Just didn't expect it really! In any case, I hope fandoms will continue to thrive and continue to challenge others views, thoughts and opinions as I think it's both healthy and important for us as a society.

I wouldn't go as far as saying ALL of them, but a great example of a charity going on right now is with the Bronies and Benders(Avatar TLA/Legend of Korra) fanbases. On Reddit, they're both doing a bunch of competitions and one of them involves donating. People who donate can sometimes win prizes from the contest holders, and the higher you donate = the better prizes that can be won. Surprisingly enough, one brony has donated $4000! I don't know exactly what the charity is for, but damn.

Much as I love TF fandom, this video is the sort of thing that would make most people afraid to admit to even having a passing interest in Transformers. It makes it sound like the whole fandom is just one giant den of perverts who have the hots for robots. Even the MLP segment shows a better representation. Also, where the hell is the Homestuck segment? That's a much larger fanbase, with arguably a lot more weird social issues to poke at.

I think the same argument about fanfic writers exploring gender flexibility in Transformers fandom could apply to fanfic writers in the Homestuck fandom. Trolls (the alien species in Homestuck) have a gender/sexuality flexibility quite similar to what's being described with.... errrmmm... I don't really know what the specific species name for Transformers is, sorry. But what I'm saying is it's quite a similar situation.

Yes, but the thing is we as individuals must also find balance between our fandom's culture and general society that we live in. We cannot live all our lives as a brony or Potter fan on the Internet, only appearing in public with some form of Potter or Pony merchandise on us, we must also be able to live and function IRL so to speak. No don't get me wrong, a health fandom is by all means good, but if it grows to dominate ones life and interests, than a problem has occurred.

An interesting overview, but I'm getting increasingly tired of the "OMG, the studios are the bad guys and they are going to come after you and they're so wrong"... Has anyone, other than me, actually TALKED to the studios? Because in my discussions, they _support_ fanworks. And Canada's new Copyright Act has a specific User-Generated Content exception which would cover fanworks- at least the not-for-profit kind.

(cont) but you could also argue that even your unique concept is vaguely based off of someones creation. The truth is, it all leads back to someone else's creation...someone elses art...so yeah you are, as you put it "expanding" on someone else's idea. again not saying fanfic in general is bad...only saying that if it is all you do it can be.

I don't like nor respect bronies because I personally see it as just a fad that will most likely either disappear or evolve into something worse. Bronies that I've seen comment on the internet typically tend to have an elitist tone and always have to be on their high horse (no pun originally intended) looking down upon those who disagree with them. However, to me, bronies are good at being trolls, so I'll give them that.

  • @Sparkledash1
    @Sparkledash1 12 лет назад

I think Fandoms can really change the view on society.
Like the Bronies who watch a Show about Ponies, which is normally considered as something gay, and i totally love that
BUT Fandoms like the Bronies also have to be careful, and not let it take over there lives.
A prime example is the Brony Pizzahut Disaster, which made me really ashamed.
But of course, you shouldn't judge a fandom just because of one video.
Great Video into the faves you go.

And that is incredible to me. One point that people who are quick to judge or people that don't understand say is like "you're wasting your life watching that show," or "You need to do something better." But my question is, does it really matter? Participating from a fandom isn't dangerous or reckless, but it is giving people something they can escape to and find joy in. Sometimes we all need to escape, and a fandom could be a great way to do that. Although it is mainly through the Internet,

That's just it: They didn't! Alexa's writing is actually pretty good, even if I'm not a fan of the subject matter, but she should not be the face of our fandom. She's nowhere near influential enough, nor is her stuff representative of the majority of fan works. They would've done much better getting somebody like James Roberts, a long-time fan and fanfic writer who is now writing for the canon IDW comics, to talk about how fandom can influence the franchise it comes from.

  • @madeye0

I think it's not just about liking the show, it's sort of a statement against gender stereotypes. Something like: I'm heterosexual male, yet I'm not afraid to expose my soft side. If it was just about liking the show, it would never become such a big deal. It's exactly the kind of strong reactions you made, that makes it so appealing as sort of a gender punk movement. (for the record I'm not a brony, but I think I understand the motives)

  • @MsKeywii
    @MsKeywii 12 лет назад

The words you used are just fancier ways of saying the same thing I said.I am not opposed to people expanding on the story. In fact I quite enjoy fanfic myself. I am merely saying when that's all you DRAW/WRITE then you are hindering yourself as an artist. Part of art is exploring different styles so that you can take your OWN interpretation and offer up something uniquely you...you may have a unique concept but not character/style which is important to art.

  • @KillerXSquirtle

Well, I see fandoms as this; in fiction, writers create a world they see as more preferable to the one we have. Those who follow that world agree or identify with the ideals set by that world. When banded together, they share their own spins on that world and possibly even try to create it in our reality. Art imitates life, life imitates art.
Fandoms are just trying to change the world for the better.

  • @AliCatDarling

The problem is, though, yes, all this could be found with a simple search, most people don't look into things before they judge. Many people who dislike many fandoms will just blindly insult it without doing any actual research. This is a good way to say: "Hey, fandoms, though they have their dark sides (like the Holmies) for the most part, they can be really beneficial."
Besides, they'd have to do a lot longer video if they wanted to get much deeper. This was more of just an overview.

With what Prof. Coppa says, I wonder... You think of all these communities being separated by physical space. Print, then the other media, made storytelling more immediate across space, but in a very stratified way. But now storytelling can be immediate in a much less stratified way. But I guess I wonder, is there a new space across which we're stratified? Is it internal? Cultural? One of cultural choices? I wonder, is there a space out (or in) there (here) for the next new media to "conquer?"

The way they use the word Fandom at the beginning makes me cringe. Still, really good video, even if some of those lines from the transformers fan-fics are never, ever going to leave my brain. ಠ_ಠ
I must say that this is the first video I've seen where they singled out pictures of more radical and, for lack of a better term, enthusiastic bronies, in which I haven't had any issues with it. Usually pictures like that are used to misrepresent the fandom. I didn't get that feeling this time.

That wasn't too bad of an episode about fandoms. There's a great many and this a pretty good pick of the many out there, along with a couple pictures thrown in to show the scope of everything. The one thing that was not very good were the sexual and erotic sides of it. That's not something most people would want to see first though it does exist. Anyhow, a good starting guide to how most of these fandoms tick with a couple of special sides to each one.

Trust me, you aren't. There's a usually pretty stark divide between the side of the internet where they keep the robot slash and the side of the internet where they keep the rest of the TF fandom, and it's pretty easy to just ignore the former part. Which apparently the people who made this video didn't care to even mention because "GENDER ISSUES YEAH MAN".

One last thing about gender issues in TF fandom: There was a LOT of backlash from the fandom when writers decided to go the way of "they have no gender!" in the IDW comics, and made the only "feminine" character the homicidally insane result of some mad scientist's social experiment. And let me tell you, most of us would like to forget that it ever happened.

As with most shows designed for children the creators typically add content to engage adults (I imagine parents, usually) that might be watching. MLP took a different rout and catered to that portion of the audience when they realized how many adults were watching, while maintaining the integrity of the content that's enjoyed by the younger viewers.

Whoawhoawhoa wait. So making Transformers have smexy time and being in your thirties but having an obsession with Ponies is fine, but dressing up as an animal whether it be for your own entertainment, sexual purposes, or to entertain the children is wrong?
Screw it, dun wanna be right! -throws on fursuit and runs to walmart-
