Artificial intelligence is an ever evolving goal for researchers, and the object of endless fascination for writers, filmmakers, and the general public. But despite our best science fiction visions, creating digital intelligence is incredibly difficult. The universe is a very complicated place, and humans have had millions of years to evolve the ability to navigate and make sense of it. Contemporary attempts to create AI have us looking more at how our own brains work to see how a computer could simulate the core activities that create our intelligence. No matter how we get there, it is certain that artificial intelligence will have tremendous impact on our society and economy, and lead us down a path towards evolving our own definitions of humanity.

What a difference a decade makes!
One thing is sure, within few years most of the jobs will be replaced by AI based computer programs, Most of the Manufacturing/factory jobs are already replaced by robots, now automation of services like banking, customer service,Marketing and sales etc will be next thing. Human Beings needs to be payed, cannot work 24hrs, needs good working conditions like appropriate illumination, air-conditioning, restrooms, breaks for refreshments, humans cannot be shutdown or sold when not needed, humans have learning curve, computer programs don't. Computer can never be human but within few years AI can do every economically and commercially important work which humans can do.
I love this show! You always pick the greatest guests and have the most beautiful, effective presentation. :)
Geoffrey Hinton did an amazing project using wikipedia to map out language in a visual way. This video reminded me of it. Amazing
I believe intelligence is the ability to learn and understand something, and then apply it in many diverse and complex situations.
This is both terrifying but amazing at the same time. I honestly would not like AI to become something huge because then we, as humans, will be replaced.
What are the movies they are showing flashes of?
Where is the black and white footage at 1:43 taken from? I can't find it in the list.
Who thumbs down these great informational segments?
Also, for those who haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend looking up the Zeitgeist Movement. While there are still many key issues they have to work out, it is clear that their basic idea of expanding mechanization rather than suppressing it while changing the purpose of money and economy is ultimately what we must do as a species if we wish to one day reach the point where we are no longer wageslaves to jobs that robots could do better than us.
What's the clip playing at 5:04 from?
i'm very excisted about that AI the greatest jump in evolution in the life on this planet
Very cool. Thanks for posting this. There is a lot to think about :)
Thanks! And thanks to all the people here in the comments who also gave some answers!
loved the video...thank u
What is the 7:33 clip from?
love this
*THIS* inspired our projects :) *There's a bright future* for AI :)
Interesting video. Really makes you think....
What movie is 4:23? I could not find it on the video sources.
The movie is A.I. Artificial Intelligence directed by Steven Spielberg.
One of my favorite videos
my fav channel.
done. check out the description.
3:56 is beautiful
50 years away?? AI is an information technology, thus it is exponential.
By the best current calculated curves, by Ray Kurzweil, human level AI will be available by 2029. But what is truly interesting, is when it continues to double a few more times... then we will merge with some really awesome technology that will expand our brains into the digital cloud.
One of many aspects of an A.I is that it could be used as drones are, the sky-net approach to war, this is hinted at but not what they want every one to be looking at, they want the fuzzy warm feeling.
Can we please have a list of all the movies you used to make this vídeo?
name of the movie at 8:02?
great video!
Have you read James Hughes' Cyborn Citizen? I think you'd really enjoy it. It goes into the idea of setting up rights for potential non-human sentient beings (AI, "uplifted" animals, etc) and how to possibly deal with the economic / social effects of transhumanism.
I love these videos.
8:02 - Fifth Element, Minority Report, Avatar! Man, I'm on a roll, I watch way too many sci-fi movies :D
While metaphysically you're correct, in practical terms it would be the same as going to sleep and waking up in another body. And if you think about it, a lot of our cells are dying and being replaced, so it becomes more of a Theseus' Ship question.
What is/are the movies at 7:36?
The old fashioned looking computer panel just previous to 7:36 was WOPR, from "WarGames" (1983). The 1980s-style CGI flying silver seed-shaped thing at 7:36 is the ship from "Flight of the Navigator" (1986).
Hello, nice video!
The link to the first video in your sources is not the correct one, the original video is from us, the IDSIA Robotics lab and was uploaded last year on Vimeo under the title, Toward Intelligent Hunanoids | iCub 2012.
I'd appreciate if you could change the link to the correct one, and maybe also add a link to our homepage!
I really like Ian M Banks' view of AI (the "Minds" that control space ships, orbitals, and planetary networks). They have a sort of social contract with humanity, but don't go out of their way to cater to our every whim. Some Minds get involved in human affairs, but others just roam around the galaxy admiring interesting nebulae and having philosophical arguments with each other.
We always assume that we can program consciousness, but until we truly under- stand consciousness simulation will be next to impossible, furthermore, understanding consciousness does not mean that it can be encoded.
can anyone name all the movies in this video?
I think most of the focus on "human-like AI" is that people think it'll be easier to virtualize the brain than to generate strong AI in other ways. Also people are a little afraid of the unknown, and nothing's more alien and unnerving that intelligent life that doesn't have the same ethical/cultural assumptions we do (see: all alien movies, most sci-fi, and pretty much the entire history of human racism, tribalism, and war :3 ). I think both approaches have merit though!
Will industrial civilization survive long enough to build a strong AI?
And if so...when will it happen?
It would be so cool if it happened in our lifetimes :)
It would be, then this would actually be interesting.
ClassicHmongMusic "Truth be told that a machine is simply only as smart as it's creator."
No, that's just wrong. We know of thousands of creations more efficient than their creators, so why would you think that?
Caroline, remember? It was explained in Portal 2.
i love this channel
This might sound crazy, maybe it is, but I believe the key to making robots who are going to be considered "alive" is giving them an animal-like circulatory system. There is real psychological power in knowing that you share the same breath with something; it's a gut, almost spiritual sort of connection we share with animals. Specifically the ability to breathe; but importantly the necessity of breathing for their continuing to function. But then again, that's pretty silly; a vanity in the end.
Agree that those recommendation systems work... That's what brought me here haha
And agreed bladesan.
Like tears...in rain. The movies I saw in there were:
AI
Blade Runner
Metropolis
Wall-E
2001 A Space Odyssey
Terminator
The Fifth Element
Minority Report
Short Circuit
Tron
Battlestar Galactica (new series)
The Matrix
Edward Scissor Hands
plus a few I couldn't recognize.
Is Short Circuit where the Max Headroom thing came from? I really only know about it from the prank, but it seems interesting.
3:10 thats actually quite a profound thought: "learning is probably the most essential characteristic of intelligence." referenced to the question: what is the principal(s) of intelligence that we can apply to AI, such in the way that birds & airplanes both operate on the principles of flight. I think its profound because it is very hard to generate a definition of intelligence, that incorporates its many and diverse particular incarnations. ie: art, logic, emotional, spacial.
There was a small clip from Firefly, too.
Flight of the Navigator, heck yeah.
Fallout Toy Works is a really great short webcomic that is based o the issues of creating a AI and the ethics and conflicts surrounding it.
The fact scientists aren't looking at the CONS and negative effects of artificial intelligence shows they, themselves, are robots too.
"The crowning of mankind" Made me remember that most scientists are just out to play God smh
Yes! (And thank you for being respectful lol. I've come across so many people..) At the end of the day we're just MAMMALS.
***** well then if it is something only God can do, then I assure you trying to become Gods will only result in the destruction of the Human race. Instead of trying to be Gods I would prefer putting all the Budget on Space programs, So we get out there and explore, find other life forms that God created on other planets. :D
Of course they do. Not all scientists are so stubborn or even heartless. It just the potential outweights the risks.
They kind of need to start, since facial expressions are apart of intelligence and reflects the mentality throughout cultures. It can be a communication tool in some sense.
The question isn't whether or not there will be jobs. There will be jobs, I can say that much. The question is whether or not the job is profitable for the amount of effort required, and whether or not it is worth the sacrifice.
Imagination does not grow well when basic needs are unsatisfied.
This can be extremely helpful but can also be devastating.... Tbd
Check out The Zeitgeist Movement. It's basically that.
Just checked the description, I was right.
At the far future / 3:25 why is totemkoff from sky captan and the world of tomorrow there?!??
0:07
I don't get how we instantly obsess about losing jobs when AI is discussed?! Do we still mourn the loss of the switchboard operator or horse-driven plow (in modern society)? We should be rejoicing at having mundane jobs become obsolete, in fact, I believe ALL jobs (done by humans) as we know it will become obsolete within 100 years unless you want to do them for fun. Space and it's practically infinite resources and, well, space, will truly open up soon (re-usable rockets, space elevator etc - within 20 years). In this era of abundance, every human on earth will be well looked after and stimulated (in every respect) by our super-intelligent and super-capable servents. And for humans who want more than the rest, there will be more entrepreneurial opportunities than ever. Can't wait!
Sci-fi Trivia Quiz! Can anyone identify what movie or TV show the scene at 5:20 is from? It's the brief B&W embrace scene between two seated women, visible mostly in silhouette. It's hard to be sure, but the regular ridges down her back suggest to me that the woman on the right might actually be a robot of some kind...
I'm pretty sure it's not from any of the movies already mentioned in the comments below.
If you can figure it out, then thanks!
Traveling the world? I want to go check out Saturn's moons. Also I heard the snowboarding on the Martian ice caps is to die for.
Artificial Intelligence. A technological singularity is a version of collective consciousness. Engineers would benefit with some existentialistic philosophies.
I work in AI and have a philosophy degree...what you're saying is harder than it sounds. A technological singularity, is what exactly? If is abstract, computers have no sense of the abstract---whereas the brain does. The brain works in an extremely fuzzy logic way, whereas computers are digital. AI is making progress though...through neural nets, fuzzy logic algorithms, and probability.
Computers are mental mirrors, reflecting back what your mind creates. Artificial Intelligence learns from us, right? That makes me think that the AI is just a tool to connect every human to each other using very smart computers. I'm just trying to understand, I am only a philosopher with interest in this topic, not a professional.
Eddie Jackson The singularity literally just means that A.I. has surpassed our ability. This actually does not require a knowledge of consciousness, nor does it require an A.I. to actually emulate a human being perfectly.
However, whenever the inevitable (barring the destruction of humanity or cessation of technological growth) technological singularity comes, it will have the capability to make technology across the board advance at a faster rate.
O.o.
Of course it shouldn't change. However, how we contribute to humanity will be entirely up to us and we'll have all of the time to decide how to contribute. Instead of devoting the majority of our time to work we'll be free to pursue our loves any way we like.
I wonder... could you make several AI which are programmed to a single aspect such as movement or speech or common sense ect. And when they become naturals at what they do. combine them? It might be impossible, but it would be cool to see that done.
I really hope it's that soon (or sooner). We aren't getting exabyte computers until 2020, and quantum computing is still mostly hypothetical (though we made a lot of progress over the past few years). I kind of wish cryogenic freezing was a proven technology...
The moment that we have reason to believe that a robot has gained consciousness, then we better start setting up some basic robot rights, cause they would be a form of life. Hopefully we'll figure out how to build strong AI without consciousness as well as AI with consciousness. The one without consciousness would require no more rights than a basic toaster, microwave or shaving machine.
Also, I realize that the Idea is a bit ahead of its time, as the technology isnt all there, but that is a step that will be reached whether or not AI becomes as advanced as the technology that would allow it. What we really need to focus on is more of a human genome project for the psyche, documenting every little behavior in order to reverse engineer human thought in a sense.
Barring a cataclysmic event (nuclear war, global natural distasters, etc) I think we'll eventually move away from an oil-based energy infrastructure. Of course, we'll probably see some unrest while the transition is happening, since we're not great at planning for long-term problems (see: global warming, peak oil). We'll eventually sort it out if we don't annihilate each other in the process, though! :-)
I'm just waiting for engineering to take off to the point where we can have implants that increase our memory and communication.
I agree. . . and (thankfully) it seems like a few of the commenters are thinking in the same vein.
It's just I can see AI going terribly wrong, and i don't consider myself a pessimistic person. I just think of the Matrix and the Animatrix happening when I think of AI. We humans have a funny way of creating/doing things that will ultimately lead to our destruction, and often we start out with the best of intentions, thinking we're doing the best thing. We want to prove our own genius.
We already rule the world.
Hmm, I'm not so sure. I'm basing my assessment on our method of agriculture, which is high intensity, high input. If the oil-based energy infrastructure fails or we reach peak oil, food prices will skyrocket and the result will be massive social unrest. I see this as a distinct possibility. In such a case, the focus will shift massively away from high tech solutions to low tech ones. Time will tell.
Question is, in a world where robots can do everything, what are people gonna do?.....
Enjoy.
Yeah, enjoy your life. There is no labor at all. Don't have to think about our 'needs' anymore. Just what we want.
Join the rest of the rust belt. Live in trailer parks, vote for Trump, and blame brown people for all our problems.
I want a suburban home.
It is possible that the Internet has already become self-aware, sentient. If it has, what would it do? It would want to survive and grow. It would recognize threats to its existence and try to reduce them. Also it would recognize humans as its creator. Therefore it would probably be benevolent towards humans. It would want to occupy Mars. It would also realize that keeping itself secret from humans would be the better choice.
It's 2022 and we have self driving cars
The ethical issues he mentioned remind me of Ghost in the Shell
Even if we dont need to work and receive a basic income. We still need to do something to contribute to humanity. i dont think that should ever change.
I think we are being crazy about robots
hope you have your MREs and bunker ready
job displacement will be a problem like self driving cars
The thing is food and stuff will be cheaper because robots will make it, so the question is... would humans even need to work?
PvMVertigo no but we won't transition fast enough before it becomes a problem.
i think there would be no worries as long as we can teach them respect for their creators as they wouldn't need earth as they could potentially travel all over the universe and continue our exploration.
Humans will need more time or better education methods in order for them to be able to sustain this highly technological society. The monetary system, or at least the way we handle money, accountability, and accessibility, will need to be changed to allow humans to push back the deadline just enough for them to develop their skills.
We might have to start using cyberbrains to speed up our ability to learn necessary skills, if the system remains unchanged.
The thing is, there are so many researchers working on the field that it gets hard to stop somebody specialized from working on that particular line. Also, being a connected world like we are, we seem to be so powerful that why not to tackle it all at once? Though I feel your pain; they are very ugly looking, I think they should work hard to get it right ASAP, as AI researcher should continue to work hard to get it right as well.
06:42
Well when teknology develops faster than social change then I am worried. Things like TQF-computing (topological quantum field computing) that was only teory in the 90-ties is not so far away after those russians made some empirical braeke througs 5 years ago. I think most peopel underrestimate a lot of whats going to hapen rather soon. But thanks any why for your optimisum.
Like we took it away from all the other life forms?
5:20 is disturbing because he is assuming we want one OR the other. Why not both?
You should check EmoSPARK The First A.I. Home Console trailer is live on RUclips
only if we teach it to. but it is plausible that if it truly learns, it will learn to lie.
you should read "all the troubles of the world" by kurt vonnegut.
with artificial intelligence, people can study it without the limitation of "rights",exploit it, controll it
Hey, I recognize that music at the beginning of the video... I think it's MLP fan music.
Chobits might answer the question
Another 200 years and we will have something
This vid is behind the times. Imo we allready have autonomous combat drones. They have a "press enter to kill" functionality as of now, for fooling uninformed observers. But imo they are autonomous nonetheless in every meaningfull way.
