The internet is a powerful tool for communication, but it can sometimes be a double-edged sword. As most of us have seen or experienced, the internet can bring out the worst behavior in people, highlighting some of the cruelest and most hurtful aspects of humanity. Issues such as bullying online and trolling have garnered a lot of attention recently, prompting questions about who does, and should, regulate the internet, and what free speech means online.

it's not just teenagers. Adults are some of the worst bullies...if you take a stand on, or express an opinion on anything, you're going to be attacked.

Jayne Hathaway I can relate. last year I was playing frontire defense (yes I'm bad at spelling sue me) on Titan Fall 2 on PS4 and I was having a good time and me and my teammates got in a argument I forgot what it was about but one of them (btw they were all black/African Americans) and he said and I quote why did you say the n word bro. And I said I didn't then he kept going on and on and I said sorry to shut him up and he said oh now you admit it and I said I'm not saying I did but if it makes you happy then fine and he then proceeded to piss me off again with another dumb argument my big half bro comes in gives me a talk btw the mic was still on and I recorded it yes I actually did and I called it sad man bully's 10 year old child with social problems and I never uploaded it mainly because most of my vids have edgy titles and I never uploaded it btw I'm white also should I upload it find me on Xbox and PS4 if you want to see the video go on PS4 and if you want to be my friend on Xbox go do that I'm usually on Xbox but the vid is on PS4

"But then there's the "trolling" that's aimed at individual people, or inciting anger/hatred in a certain group of people - THAT, is pathetic and disgusting."
And when did this type of blatant abusive behavior start getting mislabeled as "trolling"?

  • @SilencedDestroyer
    @SilencedDestroyer 10 лет назад +12

Trolling is an "internet prank". Frankly if and when I troll I hope to get a laugh both sides. I remember getting trolled because I was acting like a "Try Hard" and everyone had a good laugh in the end. Frankly if you want to avoid being trolled leave the game or mute said players and block them. The problem with these "troll victims" is that they don't do this and instead rage. This makes it funnier for trolls that you act like this. If you are trolling someone to make them rage, make sure they're already "ragers" (players who get angry over a certain game and act aggressive toward others). Still tell them it's a joke in the end. If your a eager and being trolled don't threaten anything, otherwise they'll keep trolling you. If you troll someone to crying or get them in trouble by getting their parents involved or just follow them from game to game, it's cyber-bullying. This is where I explain why trolling is an internet prank, you do it to a person once. You don't keep trolling that person...

ok even if its done in good sport and meant for a laugh its still encourages all the negative kinds of trolling which there is a lot more negative types then there is postitive types like R.I.P trolling for example and theres already enough negativity and choas in the world to where I would say it isnt worth it to add onto the fire

    • @winterwraith8339

Corwin'sConquest yea thats very true, tho u may troll and let the person know thats all it is, you have the idiots who will take the trolling to another level, and leave not telling the person it was a joke or something. Hell instead when the person begins to cry or something theyll troll harder till the person turns the electronic off...

An example of trolling is when I'm leaving the theater after seeing The Hobbit, saying "Dumbledore was a very weak supporting character" and getting people to believe me. This worked, by the way.
Calling people names, racial slurs, cussing and other forms of vocal harassment does not equate to trolling. It's simply being a dick, but people didn't know what to call it and therefore began misusing the term "trolling".

the thing is that there is imo , different types of troll. 1. you got the friendly troll - the one that tricks you in a way that everyone has a good laugh in the end
    2. typical troll - the one that tricks you in a way to be the only one laughing in the end
    3. no life troll - the one that spend all his/her day trying to find one place where he/she might be able to do something that is concidered morally inacceptable. probably to feel "badass" (even tho its not) or to releash their hate/sadness

"Troll" Is meant to confuse people with "logical fallacies"; ie things that (may) have sense, but are adressed In an inappropriate way. So It's not something "evil" at all. More like a "joke" or an "distraction" towards a specific situation. People gets mad because said "situation" hurts one's inner and most secret feelings, leading others to confuse "trolling" with "mocking".

This video takes into account that those being trolled shouldn't take it too seriously. They're simply presenting a problem and raising awareness so society can propagate a solution. That being said, don't make memorial pages. When we don't have a personal attachment to the person being memorialized, any sincerity in any reciprocated message is rather morbid, whether it's a seemingly positive or negative message. Mourn in private with your friends and family like every other mammal does.

Well, I'm glad we can agree that it is not a good thing to laugh at someone's death because of online bullying, and I do understand that it's important to have thick skin. However, as with the case with a lot of bullies, when you try to be the bigger person and show humility, they see you as a pushover and would see it as a license to say or do worse. I think we have a responsibility to tell bullies that what they are doing is wrong. After all, evil prevails when good people do nothing.

2:36 that image is the reason right there why we CANNOT censor or govern the internet. It is people that don't take any real action in life, or have failed so much in life, that they lower themselves to making other people feel low. They speak their mind because they feel they can't in the real world, and when that hurts someone, its almost like they're saying "well now you know how I feel." They want to see what its like in the other shoes, and because they are ungoverned online, they can.

Some people say some pretty awful things online sometimes leading to terrible events but what ever happened to sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt them? A person who would end their own life because of WORDS is misguided but what do you expect in a society where "a person can rise on a word and fall on a syllable?" Both the trolls and the ignorant that feed them can not be faulted only the society that allows a persons worth to be determined by a few lines of text.

its about getting people to do the right thing, not anything to do with regulation. trolls dont intend to be taken seriously and have this philosophy that none should get offended. they are insensitive to the reasons why people get offended. upholding any harmful idea publicly will cause some harm whether you are joking or not. often people live in a me-centric universe where they think "if i dont mean to be taken seriously, im off the hook" and they dont see how it fuels "real" hatred

It's incredible twists of logic, and self deception can happen in the minds of those who wrap themselves up in hysterical and emotional beliefs. Religion does this so much, but so do other groups such as feminism - unbelievable how adverse they are to thinking things through fully, or reconsidering, or how protected they are from doubt, due to what feels right to them.

Cyberbullying is not a disease. It is a symptom. A symptom of the same disease that offline bullying stems from. Cyberbullying is not new or scary, it's merely the latest manifestation of a problem that has been present for a long time. It's the same animal, now it's wearing a different hat. That's all there is to say about it. We need to focus on the root of these problems, mainly, parents who don't pay enough attention to their children, causing aggression and negative emotions to build up.

  • @WARDEATHFUN

Trolling is not bullying. When the person is trying to troll but gets to the point where he/she is harassing the user, that crossed a line and makes it cyber bullying. If you disagree otherwise, you do not understand what trolling really is. Trolls just act stupid but try to get people to believe they are really that stupid or ignorant and get the user all riled up. Trolling is really about getting a reaction, nothing more.

One shouldn't take the Internet so seriously that it needs governing. Your anonymous presence on the Internet counts to nothing. So don't get so hung-up on it.
It's interesting however, how people miraculously find the ability to say things online that they wouldn't say in person. Same goes for their behaviour. This sheer fact makes the online-world rather a game or a novelty than anything else. There is little sense in trying to police this, if even feasible.

In a online game people that is factualy trying to ruin other peoples enjoyment can be baned for exedingly longer and longer periods of time. Its going to happen at an increasing rate as game designers dont want a toxic community. The same goes for message boards like youtube and newspapers where moderators will remove posts that are directly opposite the owners interests. So you may not be able to say what you want, tough bullying and trolling may be overlooked.

Actually free speech on the internet isn't protected under the first amendment. Because most websites are private property, the government can't regulate what you can and can't say. It's up to the administrators on the website.

Since we are in the realm of internet slang, it's hard to say trolling is not the same as bullying with absolute certainty. Your definition of trolling could be very different from someone else's definition. This video did a very nice job of stating their definition of trolling.

I'm seeing some serious people with cold hearts in this comment section...
but to be honest, there's nothing we can do about cyberbullying and trolls. Jerks will always be jerks...

Remember that these people don't know you, and these comments are often illegitimate. Both bullies in real life and on the net often act because of personal problems they can't seem to cope with otherwise. I think bullying is a nice motivation that makes you think "at least I'm doing better than that guy".

I think you mean "what trolling actually WAS". The rick rollin' and similar trolling was playful pranking, nobody got offended by that (mayhaps a little annoyed but nothing more). Today most "trolling" is in fact extremely disruptive and most often aimed at annoying and pushing people down, NOT having a laugh. It's frustrated people who are craving attention and found a place where they can easily excuse their adolescent and disruptive behavior as "trolling".
