Can you guys help me understand something? It seems like Abish’s name is symbolic of a vision she had later in life, and thus not her “real” name she went by starting as a child. This makes me think it was a symbolic name Mormon chose for her as he abridged the records. Is that true? If so, is that practice common in the Book of Mormon?

I’ve watched quite a lot of BOM CFM videos and they’re all good BUT I just love Tyler and Taylor’s one because I fully get the stories and even words that’s confusing to me are very well explained. Grateful and blessed to have been part of your discussions every week. Much appreciated.

I wanted to take a few minutes to comment and say thank you for everything you guys are doing. The Come Follow Me commentary, the Scripture Plus App, the Virtual Scripture stuff, all the Book of Mormon Central resources, etc. I have been watching the videos and using all the various resources for a long time now, and have been meaning to reach out to say thank you and let you know how grateful I am for the sacrifices you guys are making to help me and so many others come closer to the Savior. I greatly appreciate all the time, energy, and resources you guys devote to the selfless service of sharing with others what you have learned, and more importantly helping others develop a greater desire to learn.
Your insights and knowledge have opened up the scriptures to me in so many wonderful ways. I love how you both are able to bring the scriptures to life, to liken them and apply them to our life today, and correlate the meaning and connection between so many doctrines and teachings in the gospel. One huge help has been your ability to teach me so much background about ancient times, the culture, the geography, language, etc. that has allowed a flood of understanding to come to me as I read scriptures I have read many times in the past and haven’t been able to fully understand. That knowledge and background has allowed the true teachings and doctrine of Christ to more fully show itself in those passages and brought a deeper and much more meaningful understanding of the word of God to me.
I have especially loved your emphasis on the covenant relationship we have with God. Your continued insights, explanations, and teachings of the meaning, origination, necessity and importance of the covenant path, and the covenant relationship we have with the Savior has been huge for me. I am starting to gain a knowledge and understanding of the Plan of Salvation that I have never had before, and a knowledge and understanding of what the covenant really is and means. It really is amazing how much the Lord has revealed to us, and you guys have assisted me a great deal in learning and understanding some of it.
I hope you continue to do what you are doing and as I said I really am grateful and appreciate that you guys have been willing to take the time and share what you know and what you have learned with me. I recently read a quote by Leonardo De Vinci that said, “There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.” Considering I don’t seem to be very good at seeing on my own, I am grateful for people like yourselves who are willing to show me what they see and help me to see as well. That quote turned my mind to spiritual gifts and the fact that we all possess different gifts and strengths, and as we share with each other we are all edified.
The best part of all this is that you guys teach with the power of the spirit, and as I listen, read, study, desire to learn, and open my heart, I am learning by faith through the power of the Holy Ghost and the Spirit is the one ultimately teaching me. Sorry this is long winded, but I am truly grateful and wanted to express my gratitude to you guys for what you are doing and thank you for sharing. please keep it up
    Nathan

My heart is rent as you make these people more real and close, as you help me "feel" and become them and walk in their shoes. They become my people, my dear brothers and sisters. They whisper from the dust; they speak by my side as we walk the path, shoulder to shoulder, hearts open, in aweful wonder and love, for the joyful eternity He has saved us for.

It's wonderful to me to see that these Laminits are now putting The Gospel 1st.
In Nephi's day, it seems, being the ruler over the people was so important to Lamin & Lemual that it became every thing to them.
Now to see their people giving up their Kingdoms to know The Lord, is beautiful !
    Thank you for your lessons.

So grateful for the time you spend making these videos! These have greatly enriched my personal and family scripture study! What a blessing - keep up the great work! We need the Book of Mormon more than any other time in the history of the world. As I read about the importance of keeping our covenants, as I read about the rise and fall of of these nations, the destruction that corruption in government and anti-christ's create, the way God speaks through His prophets and warns/directs his people, as I read about how hearts are changed by the small and simplest of things- I am convinced more and more , that this book has been written for 2020.

Beautiful!! I had tears as I was watching this. It is a beautiful experience to see the change that takes place when the spirit steps in. The sons of Mosiah and Alma were amazing men. I love how you mentioned they put alot of effort, time and meditation into their preparation. That prep time blessed and enabled them to obtain the gifts of the spirit needed to teach and convert. Oohh I just love these videos. This is also a valuable reminder to me that we are not to judge others for the things they were taught , or the way they were raised. All anyone can do is take people as they are and go from there, exactly as the sons of Mosiah did in this presentation, Thank you, I really enjoyed this, my spirit has been enlightened. Come follow me is amazing :)

Thank you both and to all members of your team for this, another wonderful presentation.
The preparation and faith of Ammon helps make my faith firmer. Three days for a wicked indolent, idolatrous man to change is a manifestation of God's power. It was the right time for the sons of Mosiah and their friends, the ones who were foreordained to teach the Lamanites, and for the Lamanites to hear and receive the gospel. Even though Laman, Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael lied about Nephi, Sam, Jacob, Joseph, Zoram, and about what really happened, the hundreds of years of lies and bad traditions was coming to an end. This makes me think that it will take all the love, faith and courage of God-loving people to help those who has lived with lies and bad traditions for many years in their lives, to be messengers of His love and of a brighter hope for the future.

The words "thank you" seem so inadequate to express my gratitude for such a thoughtful, well-developed master class of the Book of Mormon. Since the government has classified me as elderly because I'm over the age of 65 (gee, that was news to me, I didn't consider myself elderly) I am banned from my place of employment, I can not attend sacrament meeting, etc, etc, etc, all in the name of health and safety. Well, your class was like drinking a long, cool glass of living water. Thank you again for inviting the Spirit into my home, for your selfless service of time, talents, and resources. As you reminded us what Elder Maxwell said, "some of history's greatest sermons are preached from the pulpit of memory to an audience of one", I will remember to ask myself, this most thought-provoking question, What are you willing to give away to know God better this week than last week?

This is almost exactly what I went through as well. My husband left the church and I kept praying to have his heart softened, but the Lord waited a year for me to change my prayers to "soften my heart - help me see my husband as you see him". The difference was incredible! The Lord poured out so much love on me for my husband I could hardly contain it! I could finally see how much my words and actions were hurtng this good man. And we were finally able to talk to each other and laugh again.

The Readiness O-Meter STARTED with the Over Riding Principle of FAITH, in EVERY story and example within this Scripture Block. This basic principle started with King Mosiah praying to the Lord that his 4 Sons would be protected during their Missionary Journey, showing GREAT faith (Mosiah 28:6). This Principle continued with the 4 Sons going among the Lamanites knowing they would be protected (Ammon with King Lamoni, Aaron and his brothers and their mission), ALL demonstrated GREAT faith. Yes, FAITH PRECEDES THE MIRACLES !! Our Readiness O-Meter must START with this FOUNDATIONAL Principle as well !!!

I found a lot of significance in Ammon de-arming the Lamanite robbers. The robbers trusted in their own arms -- the arm of man -- whereas Ammon trusted in the arm of God. There is no comparison between the two, but if Ammon trusted in his own arms, he would not have stood a chance. We are in a similar position today. If we trust our own power or knowledge or talents alone, we will be overwhelmed. But if we trust in God, instead, God will carry us through.
What did Mormon mean by Ammon catching King Lamoni "with guile?" To us, guile only has negative connotations, but here this negative thing is used to bring about a godly miracle. Maybe Ammon is just really, really good at getting on people's good side and steering them in the direction he wants? That may have been a talent he had from back when he was a vile sinner, but now that same talent is being used to save souls.

They are in the city of ‘Ishmael’. It sounds like it’s from the Hebrew, being called after Ishmael who came with Lehi from Jerusalem. If so, it would mean ‘God listens’, right? I think that symbolism is lovely re: Ammon’s approach to the king. perhaps the name gives weight to your idea about Abish’s name having Hebrew roots. If her dads vision was before her birth, maybe he named her for what he saw. Although I like your idea a lot about the tradition continuing of Abraham changing his name after a vision. perhaps she did too. Thanks for making your videos! My family learns so much!

Other ways Ammon was a a Christ figure from video +: Bound, arrested, brought before a king, judged, willing to fight for a flock, willing to die for a flock, being a good shepherd, doing chores/daily life when others stood in awe at his works, son of a king, willing to serve until death, does serve/sacrifice, traveling without purse or script, gave up throne, fixing incorrect traditions, called enemies brethren, worked for the spirit (fasted and prayed), received heavenly comfort, confident, Meek, taught hardened people in tough areas to preach for their ethnicities, 3 days of quiet before the miracle (teaching the king), strength in defending his master’s commands, loyalty, seems able to keep his against enemy attacks, uses Socratic questions, helped people arrive at doctrinal conclusions while teaching, honors faith in others, loves his people, falls and rises on day three of king lamonis vision himself, story gives rise to women being mentioned in scripture (Mary, Abish, Lamoni’s queen). -stopping at the end of chapter 19. I’m Looking to compile a full list! Let me know if you think of some.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the end of 18:23. I don't remember the word "guile" being used in a righteous way, but because of the beginning of verse 22, it shows he's not trying to cause hurt. I also know nothing in the scriptures is pointless or purposeless. So why include the sentence "And thus he was caught with guile."?

    • @taylorhalverson3052
      @taylorhalverson3052 4 года назад +1

Great question, Avis. The point Mormon is trying to make is that Ammon was a master communicator. Instead of being ineffective, he provided a "convincing" case to the king to listen more and accept the word of God. I agree that the word "guile" may feel as though it paints Ammon as negatively manipulative. I believe that Mormon intended to communicate in a positive way that Ammon was a master communicator. Hope that helps a bit.

We loved they way you explain things, yea, just like one of your commenter here the story in the BOM becomes alive they way you describe them, and I loved the fact, which I do the same, that you even add side story like Abish and others.
I have a little question t you Taylor about Abish. It's not that I don't like it but a little confused. You've mentioned that she was converted, yes? Because of her father being a righteous man and so does she. She didn't fall to the ground like the rest of them (Lamoni, his wife and all of them including Ammon) because she is already converted. My question is Ammon too is very much converted but why he fell too? The only one reason I can think of is, if he didn't fall, people might think he caused all those in the room to fall and might be blame for it. I'm not here to argue or something I just want to clarify things, I hope you can clear this out. Thank you to all your efforts. keep it up we like they way you present things. God bless.

I'll first say that I don't know what the right answer is because I've never thought about this question before or looked for an answer. But I'm wondering if Mormon wasn't trying to create a rule that "only unconverted people fall to the ground." I think he was trying to explain why she among all the Lamanites in the group didn't fall down. You are right that Ammon was already converted and so he doesn't fit the "rule". Let me know if you come up with additional insights on this.

Entirely possible that one of the things that attracted Lamoni to Ammon was the Light of Christ that emanated from Ammon's face and presence. Probably something Lamoni had never seen and did not recognize but understood at some very deep level that here was a person of unusual character.

The scriptures likely were some form of the Old Testament and teachings and prophecies of Nephite leaders.
As for Abish, given how ancient Bible and Book of Mormon scribes used names to teach key principles, this seems like a plausible meaning for her name. Why does it specify that Lamoni was a descendant of Ishmael? And then he asks Ammon if he wants to live with his people or the Lamanites? And then Ammon calls his fellow servants Lamanitish. Was there some ethnic divide going on here?

    • @taylorhalverson3052

Here is a general resource: eom.byu.edu/index.php/Book_of_Mormon_Peoples
And Alan Miner complied these insights: stepbystep.alancminer.com/alma_20
Was Lamoni a descendant of Ishmael or of Laman? And what was the relationship of Lamanite vassal kings?

According to Avraham Gileadi, we might obtain some insight into this situation by understanding the ancient Near Eastern suzerain (lord)--vassal (servant) covenant relationship. In the covenant of grant, when a vassal or servant king demonstrates exceeding loyalty to a suzerain or overlord king, the latter may bestow on him the unconditional right of an enduring dynasty to rule over a city-state of the suzerain's empire. [a "land of inheritance"]88 . . . These vassal kings are from among the peoples over whom they rule. That is, they are not commonly related to the suzerain by blood. Nevertheless, there is an establishment of a father-son relationship between the suzerain and the vassal, by a formula declaring the suzerain's adoption of the vassal. This creates a legal basis for the suzerain's bestowal of an enduring dynasty on the vassal; in the treaty language, the vassal is thus known both as "son" of the suzerain and as his "servant."89
The suzerain holds a feast or feasts annually (Alma 18:9; 20:9) at which his vassals renew their covenant with him. (Compare the Old Testament feasts of King Solomon as suzerain--1 Kings 8:65, and of King Ahasuerus the Persian as suzerain with Ether 1:1-3). That custom explains Lamoni's awkward encounter with his "father." The suzerain, who is king over all the land, seeks out Lamoni and immediately questions him about why he didn't attend the feast (Alma 20:8-9). Such an act signified a vassal's rebellion against the suzerain. It is doubtful the king is Lamoni's familial father, for apparently Lamoni is an Ishmaelite (see Alma 17:21). Moreover, the father king is old (Alma 20:24); and only some forty years earlier a King Laman, son of Laman, was king over all the land (Mosiah 24:2-3). [Avraham Gileadi, The Last Days: Types and Shadows from the Bible and the Book of Mormon, pp. 181, 215]

Tyler, 19:09 verse 26 "ish" - A quick and simple search showed "The NAS Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon" as defining the word "ish" as "identical (in origin and formation) with". If we want to understand the meaning behind words and conjugations it is probably more fruitful to refer to languages such as biblical Hebrew which is noted by Nephi as influencing his record "the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians." As our language is believed to have not existed until the 5th century. Another possible interpretation of the use of "ish" in words such as "English" showing a language beholden to a region. Linguists would undoubtedly be better at providing clear explanations, then a 5 minute google detective.
