I love that you made this. I also studied at Genki JACS and lived in Fukuoka for 1.5 years... best time ever!! In that time, I actually wanted to start a whatthefuk blog (even bought the domain) but I had no idea how to go about it, so well done, love your content!! And it makes me so nostalgic for Fukuoka

Also adjacent to the napkin is the handkerchief, which so many Japanese (men and women) carry with them at all times, even commonly being given as a gift.

Ahhh so cool you went to the same school too! And awesome thought getting the domain, you should totally do something with it 😊. I started my own marisaroundtheworld website, so you can make your blog too for sure! Fukuoka is the best 🥰
Yes! The handkerchief, I forgot to mention! 😭😭

I loved getting the steamed towels in restaurants during my visit. Kinda tempted me to get a steamer for home.
Also the culture of washing hands before eating is very nice. When I got back, I definitely felt like my hands were dirty before eating haha

This is perfect timing because we are headed to Tokyo next month! Does the oshibori stay on your table the entire meal or does someone remove it after you wipe your hands off at the beginning?
I am so weirded out by the tissues at ramen places. If those tissues are like American tissues, one splatter of ramen on my face and I'll have a soggy tissue sitting on the table. 😅

The oshibori stays on the table! Most people will fold it neatly and keep it to the side while eating. I’ve been to a few places that give you oshibori at the beginning and end of the meal but this is very rare! (Usually only one at the beginning).
The tissues are so weird 😂. Terrible for ramen in my opinion

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought...WTF is up with the napkins in Japan. Me and the GF called the "waxy" napkins "plastic" napkins but I think waxy is a better description.
Because restrooms were sometimes hard to find we liked keeping the extra wet wipes when we were out and about.
    Great channel, subscribed!

Hahah glad I’m not the only one too! And good idea with keeping the wet wipes. I stash a few in my bag too these days 👍🏼

new subscriber in stumbling across your hiking vids, totally agree with the napkin perspective. Japan gets many things right but the most basic thing of a napkin is overlooked. they have super high tech toilets but weak napkins solution - bizarre!

Wow definitely different from American napkins for sure 🤔
