  • Even though Greece is a predominately Christian Orthodox country, there are some people in this country who still believe in the 12 Gods of mount Olympus, deriving from Greek Mythology. According to unofficial sources they amount to a couple of hundreds and present themselves as members of the unofficial so-called "Greek Religion". This is a mixture of beliefs that combine paganism, the idea of spiritual connection with nature and a kind of fixation to the Ancient Greek ideals. Over the past decades they have founded various different groups, the oldest and most popular among them being the "Greek Naionals High Commissioned Council (GNHCC) - Υπατο Συμβούλιο Ελλήνων Εθνικών," founded 30 years ago.

I'm an atheist, but who am I to say that these people are morally wrong? That one woman had so much faith she was crying about her religions hymns being brought back once more. The Greek gods and goddesses are what made the Greeks heritage so rich. Some of their inventions have been modified throughout history, and we wouldn't have these inventions without their minds. If we let this couture die, the understanding of their knowledge does with them.
I find it ironic that the people who started voting and having the peoples voice heard over the government, is doing the opposite of that.

No one should ever have the right to judge or condemn the actions of another, no matter how vile or disgusting they may be. Every person should have the right to do whatever it is they please, and because right and wrong don't technically exist - even the most abhorrent crimes should receive the same objective status.

When I lived in Canada, I was filling a form, a questionnaire. I had to circle the religion I belonged to. There were many world's religions listed. And there was the option "Other" with an empty line. I circled "Other" and wrote "Greek Pantheon" in the empty line. That was in 2003. I am so happy to see that this now really exists. How do people come to the erroneous conclusion that the Pagans are not being allowed to practice their religion? The only issue is that they are not allowed to turn the Parthenon into a place of worship because it's a protected archaeological site not suited for religious rituals. Neither the Pagans or any other religion is allowed to worship in a historical site. You people are turning this subject into something that it most definitely is not. KARAN B I agree that Indoeuropeans never existed. It is a theory from the Nazis to connect the Aryans with the Germans.
Where I don't agree is at the fact that India was the "Alpha and Omega".
At first, ironically you are using a Greek phrase to describe the undisputed historical importance of India.
Secondly, where are you basing your belief? Greeks had no reason to copy a mythology. The Greek mythology and pantheon are tremendously rich and numerous archaeological sites are visible today due to the Greek mythology, such as Troy, Mycenae and other.
Thirdly, the word mythology( in Greek μυθολογία) etymologically points at events that actually occurred. Antisthenis, a Greek philosopher mentions that if you want to find knowledge , you need to start explaining etymologically your language, referring of course to the Ancient Greek.
At the Greek mythology one will find that Hercules and Dionysus have visited India and America, this is why there are findings like the following Minoan amphoreus in Caribbean Bimini islands, www.ell.gr/AMERIKH.html
The list can go on forever. Let's just humbly say that we don't really know what happened.

The Abraham story cannot be definitively related to any specific time, and it is widely agreed that the patriarchal age, along with the exodus and the period of the judges, is a late literary construct that does not relate to any period in actual history.[4] A common hypothesis among scholars is that it was composed in the early Persian period (late 6th century BCE) as a result of tensions between Jewish landowners who had stayed in Judah during the Babylonian captivity and traced their right to the land through their "father Abraham", and the returning exiles who based their counter-claim on Moses and the Exodus tradition .[5]
Everything in the Judeo/Christian Bible has been stolen and corrupted from religions predating Judaism, Christianity, and Islam from hundreds to thousands of years. Through Judaism and its tool of Christianity, all of the original spiritual teachings from around the world, (which are CONCEPTS) have been stolen from, lumped together into the "one," and corrupted into Jewish archetypes and characters and fictitious places.

      Abhinav Rajagopalan
The condemnation of idols is a fraud psychological tactic of Abrahamic religions to destroy spiritual culture and for mass manipulation and control.
An image is an appropriate mental intermediary that "bridges between the inner world of the mind and the outer world of material reality", the image is a vehicle between sensation and reason. Idols are useful psychological catalysts, they reflect sense data and pre-existing inner feelings. They are neither the origins nor the destinations of thought but the intermediary in the human inner journey.
Spiritual practices are based on the belief that "all knowledge is inevitably mediated by images" and human beings discover, learn and know what is to be known through "names, images and representations
The idols are neither random nor intended as superstitious objects, rather they are designed with embedded symbolism and iconographic rules which sets the style, proportions, the colors, the nature of items the images carry, their mudra and the legends associated with the deity
For most traditions, the object may be a piece of wood or iron or stone, yet it is "symbolic, an emblem and implies the spiritual idea which is worshipped". The material objects may decay or get destroyed, the emblem may crumble or substituted, but the spiritual idea that it represents to the heart and mind remains unchanged

Respect from a Chinese Buddhist. Hinduism, Buddhism and Greek ancient religion, Balto-Slavic paganism, Nordic beliefs etc. are all descended from Proto-Indo-European religion. "Dyaus Pita" in Hinduism is cognate with the Greek "Zeus Pitar" or Roman "Ju Piter". The Hindu god Agni is cognate with the word for "fire" in many European languages (in Slavic: ogien, oganj; in English: ignite). In fact the Polish word for "knowledge" is "WIEDZA", cognate with the ancient Hindu "VEDAS". In traditional Chinese belief we have our own pantheon of polytheistic deities and gods, and some of the most ancient artifacts of the Chinese language are found on carved tortoise shells used for oracle telling dating back to 4000 years ago, and traditional Chinese religion has also been influenced greatly by Buddhism and traditional Indian beliefs.
Christianity, Judaism and Islam are ABRAHAMIC, SEMITIC religions that originated and developed in the Middle East. They have NO place in Europe, India, Iran etc. (traditional Indo-European lands) and beyond.

Wow so much hate in the comment section. I thought Atheist were "free minded people"
why do you guys waste your life in the comment section arguing? It seems like your minds aren't free as the vast majority of your time is spent hating and thinking about people who believe in God, or more particularly Christians. Spending your life talking about God after you've "set your self free from religion" is analogous to asking a kidnapper to stay in touch with you after he/she let you go. Maybe some of you are still intellectually enslaved if your time spent in cogitation/on the internet, is dedicated towards hating God. Go out and enjoy your "freedom".

The Golden Irony is that you've come into the comment section and started an argument. Anyway, as a non-biased party here, being a Sikh, I can state with all honesty that most of the flaming in the comments here has been perpetrated by our fellow religious people; ironically, it has devolved into infighting between Moslems and Christians, overwhelmingly ignoring the subject material of Dodekatheism. I'm not sure how you have mistaken the ten or so angry atheists here as representatives of both the entire comment section, and of atheism in general.
Edit: Oh, and you probably shouldn't equate God to a kidnapper, either. Just a tip.

We don't hate God. Why would we? He doesn't exist. We dislike the concept of God and religion. Not because we have a problem with people disagreeing with us. We have a problem with religions enforcing their backwards morals on everybody, including us. Religions work towards keeping gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research etc. illegal. In my country all stores have to be closed on sunday by law, which is another pointless religious law. There are like a dozen wars with thousands of deaths everyday going on because of religion and it used to be even worse!

Yep. Greece has cut the roots (except for those people) from the old religion. Islam had nothing to do with Greece after the Turks got kicked out of the peninsula and they were more or less eradicated during the Greek revolution in the 1820's. Islam is now recognized because of a small Islamic minority that still lives close to the border with Turkey and that stayed in Greece due to a convention (after its last expansion and dispute with the Turkish). Finally, these days there are lots of muslin immigrants in Greece.

Again, under the heading of `sons of Ham,' the author has arranged `Cush', i.e., the Ethiopians; `Mizraim,' the people of Egypt; `Sheba and Dedan,' or certain of the Southern Arabs; and `Nimrod,' or the ancient people of Babylon, four races between which the latest linguistic researches have established a close affinity" (Rawlinson's Hist. But the tradition of Hellenistic Jewish identifications of the ancestry of various peoples, which concentrates very much on the East Mediterranean and the Near East (described below), became stretched and its historicity questioned. Not all Near Eastern people were covered, and northern peoples important to the Late Roman and medieval world, such as the Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and Nordic peoples were not covered, nor were others of the world's peoples, such as sub-Saharan Africans, Native Americans, and peoples of Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Far East, and Australasia. A variety of arrangements were devised by scholars in order to make the table fit, with for example the Scythians, who do feature in the tradition, being claimed as the ancestors of much of northern Europe."
The Bible has nothing to do with Indo-Europeans inherently. Traditional Greek gods are descendants of Proto Indo-European gods and religion.
The Bible may get the recordings of some Caucasoid peoples right, but no, it does not get all of them, and it by no means anticipated the Indo-European theory. And I've never seen anyone equate "Asiatic" with "Aryan".

It's funny though because the Romans are the one who killed Jesus because they don't believe that he is a Jewish messiah but later after 300 years in 300AD they accepted Jesus as Messiah while the Jews rejected Jesus as their very own messiah (defender, saviour)

You are Greek, but are your born in Greece? Because I believe you are born in the US and the Greeks in the US are unnecessarily traditional and have confused many things. For example, if you know any Greek at all, you and your family would know very well that the religion never said "believe and don't question anything", it says "believe or not (believe), question everything", the difference is that it cannot be translated very well in english and there's a comma in the sentence that changes the whole meaning (πιστευε και μη, ερευνα VS πιστευε και μη ερευνα). Only old and uneducated people still believe that they shouldn't question everything. I have no reason to defend religion, i am an atheist myself, born in Greece in a time that the society is changing everyday, but I hate it when atheists complain everyday as if they are born in a theocracy. In my honest opinion, these are the people that would rather complain to strangers, instead of doing something to change the society one step at a time, starting from their family. For me, you are part of the problem, religion or atheism is a personal thing, nobody can force you, you have a choice, you are born in free country (either that is Greece or the US) and you can believe in god, allah, the spaghetti monster, satan or science. I chose science, my parents chose science, my boyfriend chose science, my close friends chose science and nobody in our society gives a crap.

As for becoming Christian , why should I?, I see no reason to be one, we Hindus are henotheists mostly, we believe that there are several paths to the divine and all of them are right. I have no issue with your faith and I would never tell someone to convert, I respect their beliefs, I have gone to churches, and I have gone to Dargahs of Muslims, I see divine in them like how I see it in the Temples and by feeling the divine within me and around me , I am at peace with my beliefs, so I have no reason to change it.

Even though I am an atheist, and very much an anti-theist this brought a tear to my eye. I’ve always been extremely fascinated by Hellenism/Olympianism. The Gods and culture of Ancient Greece are so unbelievably interesting and intricate. The ceremony was beautiful; the chanting, the white dresses and the offerings. I’ve been studying the societies of Ancient Sparta & Athens and have been loving every bit of it.
I think this documentary mainly should’ve been focusing on their practices and beliefs rather than the politics about it. I also found the reporter to be quite disrespectful, especially towards the end.

@Jade Fields They are not being discriminated against. For that to be the case, then that would mean that Christians are allowed to practice their religion at the Parthenon. Clearly, Christians would be denied just like the Pagans as they're being precluded from worshipping at the Parthenon has nothing to do with religion but rather the State interest in preserving the Acropolis in as pristine condition as possible. Undeniably, a group of people worshipping inside the Parthenon is not conducive to this State interest. Please keep in mind that these Pagans are in no way being obstructed from practicing their religion. It's merely a matter of it being unreasonable to practice a religion at a delicate archeological site which main importance is the preservation of the Parthenon for as long as possible and people worshipping inside the Parthenon is blatantly opposite to that important State interest, not only for the general welfare of Greece but that of the entire world.

I think it's because the theological foundation of Christianity is built around exclusivity of their god, that any other divine being is an imposter and is misleading people to damnation.
The irony is that, in my opinion, what a lot of what Christians believe in, like an afterlife, Heaven, where there is beauty and peace with those who came before, justice, mercy, honor, family, have roots in pre-Christian theology and philosophy of the soul. Many Christians don't understand that their forebears were not "wicked" or "immoral", but good people who admired their native faiths, faiths with very similar ethical values that were not only similar to them, but directly influenced the religion they practice; even the name God is derived from Deus (Latin God) = Dyeus (Proto-Indo-European )= Diwe = Zeus (or Tiwaz in Proto-Germanic, Dias in Thracian, Dei in Illyrian, Dyaus in Sanskrit), Divo in Slavic, ect.
When Abrahamic faiths spread across Europe, the missionaries ensured the European gods and goddesses, including the god of the heavens, Deus, in particular, morphed into a different personas, God for Deus, and the other deities as saints.
Today, the brainwashing is heavier in most Christian denominations to dislike European culture, and myths in particular.

***** Ancient Greeks believed that the gods could take any form at will, and could take the form of animals and other people, and they would take the form of animals to give birth to other entitires etc etc. This means by definitiion that they did not have one form but many. And that makes the humanoid form either a way to personify them, or a form that the gods used more often than the other forms. However, I have read that many things were figurative. For example the 12 gods lived in mound Olympus, and they named the highest mountain in Greece Olympus. But they named many mountains as Olympus. So which one did they mean? Where did the gods live? The answer is that it was figurative. Olympus was a place but no certain place. The same is with the forms. It was a personification just like mount Olympuses, any of them, were "personifications-materialisations" of a place. And there is a river Aherontas in Greece which was supposed to take you to the underworld. But you can walk around it! That was also figurative. Christians would try to degrade the ancient Greek religion as if it was that silly and stupid, to show the new religion's higher value. It was the old differentiation thing, to market something, only in this case through false and bad counteradvertising of the enemy-competitor.

I can partly agree with you. First of all Mount Olympus is/was one in whole Greece and in its history. Maybe Gods' mount Olympus was a figurative place like you say, like heaven. 2nd of all Christianism in many ways is even more rediculous than Dodekatheon.

And where did you learn that giant load of hogshite? In the Qur'an, the book that also tells people to forcibly convert or kill people who don't believe in the same shite as you belive in, paganism has been here since the dawn of civilization, it's what came first, the form of faith and spiritual expression that comes most naturally to humans, it teaches us to respect nature when we're outside in the beautiful sorrounding performing our rituals, through those same rituals it teaches us the value of giving to receive, it fills up our spiritual vessels making us happier and more fulfilled people and if there is something that is applied to the entire human race it's the pagan/natural way of viewing the world around us all.

Both yes and no, i see some value in a religion being older mainly that it's what comes most naturally to humans that would be practiced first and no because people can still come up with new and better ideas over time, but i see it this way, that you take the old and natural as a template for how a human lives best and then you add in new things as time passes, much like any religion evolves naturally over time when new ideas come, but i guess it's really mostly a matter of perspective.

Don't get me wrong here, I like the pantheon, and specifically the Homeric gods as an idea but "like" doesn't mean worship. Are you thinking of just culturally adopting some aspects of the old religions or full on 'Believe and Worship' these gods?

What I like about the Greek Gods is that they don't pretend that they are kind like Zeus and Poseidon. They show how they really are unlike the God of Christianity.

    • @pluviophile4311
      @pluviophile4311 3 года назад +3

@Joe Swanson man what I mean is , the art and culture is theirs, but the religion isn't. Which is unlike indigenous religions.
So essentially what is theirs still remains, what isn't theirs doesn't which effectively doesn't make a huge difference for the Czechs.
I am neither white, nor Pagan, and quite far from a racist.
as for past being better because it's pagan , it isn't exactly the thing, it's more like past being better, because, they wouldn't be mistreated for following the religion of their own ancestors in their own ancestral land by their own people just like Zoroastrians of Iran.
How is Paganism racist? I don't get it really, Are Japanese racist for following Shinto? Are Indians racist for being Hindu? Are Chinese racist for following Taoism?
And if someone did think past was better because it was pagan ,really, doesn't make it a thinking unique to pagans as plenty of evangelicals think the same of Christianity and the present and they are also well known for being truly racist.

The Greek govt gives special privileges to Eastern Orthodox Christianity because they see it as part of the national identity of Greece but wont let their original religion use their sacred sights for worship? What?

    • @connorgolden4
      @connorgolden4 5 лет назад +2

Samuel Jackson Because those sacred sights are ancient and fragile. I understand that everyone wants to worship at places special to their faiths but if your worshipping might damage those places it won’t be worth it. They should just build their own temples, it would be a better symbolic decision anyways since it would show they’re not just focused on the past but are looking to the future as well.

If so does this exactly discredit the Christian God, could another God coexist with other Gods as well? I was a Christian and now I’m more questioning and I feel all of these are pretty valid questions. Why is your experiences with your God different from theirs?
