As someone who makes cheese, dried sausage, and cans I always laugh at people who say " is that safe" i say i dont know. But atleast i know whats in it.
Upton Sinclair played a similar role in American food history. He was also an immigrant contracted as a journalist, interested in the conditions of the workers, not the food.
How miserable. Makes me feel awful thinking about how they worked so hard all day and didn't even have a place to take a warm shower after such a long day or a comfortable bed to rest in.
I am sure that, regardless of health and safety regulations, there are still lots of dodgy things going on in the food industry. It's simply a matter of maximising profit.
Look at the food ingredients there are many now that contain cellulose in food. Cellulose in food What it is: A carbohydrate that makes up the cell walls and woody parts of plants Where it's found: In fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, and whole grains How it's added to food: Usually comes from wood pulp or cotton lint What it's used for: To thicken and bind ingredients, and mimic a meaty texture What it's called on ingredient lists: Powdered cellulose, cellulose gum (carboxymethyl cellulose), or cellulose gel (microcrystalline cellulose or MCC) Is it safe to eat?: Generally considered safe to consume, but eating too much may cause side effects like bloating, stomach upset, gas, constipation, or diarrhea. Yes wood pulp is added to your food to thicken it.
We have factory farming today. The conditions for the animals are horrible. Even if you don't care about animal welfare, at least you should be concerned about the workers and the consumers, the risk of injury/infectious disease to humans is enormous.
It is a miracle anyone lived through those times between disease and the way they messed with all the food! It was a very rough time to be alive for sure..
One of the Games New Yorkers Play is to scan the newspapers or online websites to see how many of their favorite pizza joints, bakeries, and delis have been cited for health violations by the over-worked sanitation inspectors.
We’re reliving the same now in 2024! Major food recalls every day! It’s only getting worse, all those food companies are all about quantity not quality.
That was so informative! A new perspective on history I’ve never been introduced to! Stunning narration as always! You know how to really bring the text to life!
30:32 I don’t know if it was luck or a fortunate strong disposition but I’m surprised any of my ancestors even survived these unsanitary conditions and tainted food which today allow me to learn about such horrific conditions. How many people suffered and did not survive the poverty, disease, malnutrition and inhumane treatment of the era! After learning this, I’m surprised I’m even here to understand the unscrupulous methods the wealthy factory owners took to increase profits.
My maternal grandfather died in his early 30s in the 60s from eating cheese that had been sold in poor condition. Until not long ago, the simple act of eating was a matter of risk.
It’s only possible through the grace of God. It’s not over until Jesus returns and finishes his promised work. Trust in the Lord as your ancestors did too
This video is factual and a very well documented credible source of first hand investigative reporting!! Thank you! I can understand how adding a lot of cheap sugar to a boiled fruit mixture can hide any spoiled flavor and boiling it down would kill any mold or bacteria. What I’m having a hard time understanding is rancid meat. Who would buy and cook rotten meat? There is almost no way to serve rancid meat Unless people were used to eating spoiled meat? E-Coli must have been running rampant everywhere! The only thing I respectfully disagree with is the diet at the time wasn’t based upon meat. It was wholesome wheat bread and butter, oats (porridge) and root vegetables. I do not believe most lower earning citizens had meat based protein more than once or twice a week. Due to cost. Thank you again for the education!
Have you ever worked in a food processing plant before I have for 2 years a person that comes around a couple of times a year or so to inspect the plant inspect the machines and everything the guys that work in maintenance they would come by and whenever we have to do a different product or anything they would come down and sanitize the conveyor belts and everything that the food goes on so whenever they have to change over to a different food product the conveyor belts in the machines were always wash and sanitize by the maintenance man so unless you work in a food processing plant you have no idea what goes on in there
Uh, have you seen factory farms? Besides horrible conditions for the animals, there is ENORMOUS risk of injury/infectious disease to the workers and the consumers.

Last part of my restaurant dinner was popular in Paris . Since time or French Revolution, had reached British shores by 1880s . Gentlemen dinning away from homes at clubs , men from middle class and working class at oyster shops , or food stands along streets. Custom of dinning out by 1890s . Both ladies and gentlemen have chance to leave homes setting in restaurants with high class people. Rosa Lewis became first freelance cook for anyone could afford her services . Rosa Lewis saved money with hours of works without wink of sleep . She bought cavendish hotel . She earned fortune for satisfaction of highest class persons privacy and excellent food . She made private dinning rooms , where swells could bring lady friends, permanent suites , exotic dishes. There are extravagant dishes . She also invented delicious quail pudding for king Edward. Food at Edwardian era there are breakfast and dinner, ladies added afternoon tea , another tea within hot muffin’s, toast , beef or fruit cream . Typical English breakfast at that time consisting of kidney, tongue , chicken, woodblock. Luncheon included lamb , pigeon, pudding, cheese , biscuits, jellies, fruit , supper great sample of dishes . Guests sitting down for ten to fifteen course meals was quiet normal . Honestly till nowadays some people have extravagant food restaurants meals . Definitely home food is more healthy. Happy new year merry Christmas.good luck to you your dearest ones .

Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel sir . I just read differences between victorian and Edwardian era . Victorian era it’s really miserable period for both poor and wealthy people in every aspect, while Edwardian era called ( golden age ) where the social change, health improve, time of peace , prosperity it’s started of First World War in 1914 Edward v11 during early reign of king George v. She is known as queen of cooks , prized by king Edward v11 and , known too as duchess of jermyn street . As I read Rosa Lewis
Very interesting and informative, I believe a lot of these things still happen today unfortunately, all about money and profit at the expense of the people. I felt like I was actually back in Edwardian England! Looking forward to your next video!
The part in which it's narrated the state in which the eggs arrived for the pastry shops gave me chills. Deaths from salmonella should have been the order of the day.
In the buroughs of New York there was bath houses. A lot of working class and low income people went there. We need such spots today! If you can't bathe or shower at home for whatever reason you can shower at a truck stop for $20. which gets expensive, maybe go to the home of a friend or relative, or if you have additional extra money, get a motel/ hotel room.

Yes, Upton Sinclair really started getting people aware of the horrors!
"I aimed for the nation's heart, and hit its stomach."
I read The Jungle. Worst book I ever read, mostly cause I knew everything he wrote was true.
The Jungle took me to the edge of that brink... It should be required reading for Gen Y, Z, and on up.... Perspective is priceless.
The edition of my book even claims that it horrified people so much that meat consumption in America was reduced for decades.

I cant help but laugh. How bad was edwardian food. Not nearly as bad as it is today. They have had 100 years to perfect their craft of adulteration.
This reminds me of the book "the jungle" written about working conditions in the USA around the same time period
It’s a brutal book
These conditions and worse still exist today in developing nations like India, Philipeans, Indonesia, Liberia and many African nations.
Olivia seemed to think India had nicer factories and work conditions than Britain back in those times she had investigated this.
Watch the movie “Food Inc.” nothing has changed that’s why the food industry is kept hidden!

beef a better grade. This is in the USA!
electric shock stuns the animal for bleeding, they also use special bolt gun for this purpose

Horsemeat lasagne anyone?
