I’ve been teaching piano for 38 years but there is still much to learn which is why I visit your channel often.
My own experience with piano teachers was horrible. I had 6 teachers from age 10-18. My parents kept trying to find someone to feed and nurture my piano obsession.
When starting college lessons I realized just how incompetent they all were. Sad. First thing my college professor said was, you need to fix your legato. What??!! She taught me about time periods, sonata form. I learned my first Bach and Mozart pieces etc. it was like a whole world was opening up!! Since I never learned scales or chords, I learned them on my own in order not to take lesson time away from repertoire.
I’m sharing this because this type of incompetence is still happening today. I get “transfer” students who are so needy. Because I experienced this myself it makes me both sad for them (and their parents who paid for lessons in good faith) and just a little angry too. So please, prospective pianists chose your teachers carefully. I recommend attending a student recital. Do the students not only play well, but are they comfortable, happy? Best wishes to all of you!

Dr Wang, At 82, I renewed my music studies in jazz these last 3-4 years, but realized the invaluable background needed with classical music, which I studied from 5-12 as a child. Your explanation to choose the right teacher has defined which and how long to work with that teacher. Your knowledge and wisdom , to me, is so rare these days. Bless you for your dedication.

My piano teacher never discussed the style of any piece, or who the composers were. I remember wondering who "Chop -in" and "Had-in" were. She also refused to play through a piece to help me understand the beauty of the piece. It was really difficult to stay motivated to learn a piece when I had no idea how it might sound and no context. I gave up eventually and am now having much more success in my 40s as a returner. Thanks for your very helpful videos.

    Hello from the down under👋
Dr. Wang, you are the most humble and generous piano professor and professional pianist. Strange to say so, though I don’t play piano, I’ve learnt a lot of insights and skills from your videos. That even benefits my 9 years old daughter’s piano learning!
I hope one day my daughter can be under your tutelage. 😊

Indeed, it's a very sensitive topic. It reminded me of many teachers I studied and had bad experiences with. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I definitely envy your students Prof. Wang!
I think this is also a great reminder for college students who are becoming teachers, to learn from their teachers' mistakes and not repeat them.

Yes, we all need to be humble. What are good characteristics for a teacher should also apply to the students. It is not a oneway road.
I love my teacher. She often sits there saying no word, and I already know what she thinks about my playing just from the feeling she generates. She follows exactly each phrase and note, notices each micro movement and detects bodily tensions when they arise before I become aware of them. A teacher needs full attention, and so does a student.
I wish this to everyone who wants to be serious with the piano. It is a lesson of life. Music is life. A really good piano teacher works way beyond the physical boundaries of the instrument.

Dear Shijun Wang! Im 36 and i played some month piano when i was 10 and after some month when i was 18 and some month at 25 and 32 Now i started again and i learnt Chopin op10no1 in 4 ocassion by heart just watching the sheet music (learnt 15-20 minutes each time ) on my Channel u can see what I memorized I played it 4th time on the piano in the video. The sound is silent cuz I have to use the middle pedal cuz I can't make noise in the house. I never had teacher Each time a started playing I did it myself and I memorized mazeppa, feux follets, the 6th transcendental etude in 5 occasion, and some things I liked during the years. But Ive never played more than maximum 5 month day after day cuz I never had time. So I'm absolutely beginner I only can memorize pieces. I never practised scales, or anything. My question is is it worth start practising piano again in my age? My brain can improve in this age? I want to learn playing piano that level like u do. Is it possible in this age? Thank you very much!
