    This is a great video. I was nervous before but now I am incredibly nervous, but well informed, and that's the key here. My plan after watching this is to work a lot harder alone so that one day I can be good enough to get a teacher.

    This is kinda helpful. I am a harpist and I have been playing harp for just over 20 years. And I completely get what your saying. I am from Louisiana and it's almost impossible to find a piano teacher. I thought I would give the piano a try. I never really wanted to play piano even though I have always had one. When I was looking for a harp instructor that turned out to be a real headache. I would go to teachers who said they could play the harp well. that they were master's at the harp. And when they would ask me to play the harp. They would end up asking me to teach them. I went through that and it was a big headache. Then I found out they were not harp teacher's at all they didn't even play the harp. They played piano and wanted more students so they said they could play harp. I was lucky enough to get into the San Francisco Conservatory of music where I studied the harp. Then went on to study at Mills College in Oakland CA, then I studied jazz harp with the great Miss Alice Coltrane. Then studied Celtic harp. But it is not easy to find a harp are piano teacher you can click with. And lessons can really cost. P.s. if you think the piano is difficult the harp is near impossible without a good teacher trust me. Thanks for just being honest Josh because your right!

    So weird. I’m from Minnesota and was wondering how to get a teacher so I googled it and found your video and at about 3:50 you say “if you’re from Minnesota...” haha. It was like you were speaking directly to me!

    Dr Wright, thanks so much for your videos. They are incredibly helpful to me. Your videos, your attitude towards teaching, students, etc and just your obvious deep love of music is all so inspiring.
    I'm in highschool, and I've been self taught (with parents' help) for 11 years. Now I really, really regret not having asked my parents for real lessons sooner... hopefully it's not too late.
    Anyway, thank you again, and your videos have helped me get through rough piano times! :)

    Hi Josh. I totally agree with you, regarding better teachers charging a higher fee. I'm an adult piano student, and I tried - twice! - lessons with individuals who fit that 'old lady' stereotype. Each was an entirely decent and pleasant person. However, a certain amount of .... depth ... was missing. They would focus on what I considered less important details, and missed hearing the intentions behind my playing. I don't know if I'm making myself clear. But, I feel that a very well-developed and talented musician will focus on the big picture stuff first, instead of bogging a student down right away minute particulars. Like, first let's get through playing all the notes correctly. Then, let's address the dynamics. For example.

    Hi! Thank you so much for your videos, I've learned so much from you. I was wondering if you have a video or any tips about how to use core when playing the piano. I'm trying to figure out since I'm accompanying a violin player, and his teacher keeps saying that I need more core. Thanks!

    Hi Dr. Josh, is it good to use finger trainer (gripmaster) to strengthen the fingers since I play on digital piano now but I may play on grand piano later and the grand piano keys are heavier so is finger trainer a good idea

    My first teacher was good in that she recognized that I had surpassed what she could teach. My second teacher, who came highly recommended, really set me back in that he gave zero guidance as to my hand placement and technique. I was young and inexperienced. Once I realized my faults, it took a lot to fix bad habits. After that, when looking for a teacher I ask them to play so that I can observe their technique and avoid furture bad habits.

    Once the pandemic is over and I can go back to school, I'm gonna ask one of my music teachers if they can teach me or help me find a local teacher. It would be better if I actually learned from a teacher at my highschool because then it would be less likely that I would have to pay

    Great video, quick question though. When pianist compose pieces such as Chopin and his etudes, why are there notes attach for each one, so Opus 25 Number 11 is written in A minor and Opus 10 Number 5 is in g-flat major. Does this mean the whole piece consists of only keys involving g flat or for op 25 no 11, keys only consisting of a-minor? Why even assign a key to the pieces!?

    • @nmaurok
      @nmaurok 6 лет назад +4

      Marshan122 that's a very good question which I myself am curious about!

    • @joshwrightpiano
      @joshwrightpiano  6 лет назад +7

      Marshan122 you can google “opus wiki” for an article explaining this :) Basically, an opus is a work or set of works. If there are several works within an opus, such as the etudes, you will have the opus AND number listed. It is also standard to list the key that the piece is written in. A composer may modulate through a piece, but generally always returns to the home key (there are exceptions to this, but it is not standard to do this).

    • @BadBootyShakanosis
      @BadBootyShakanosis 6 лет назад +4

      These are the keys the pieces are written in. This tells you 2 things: (1) most (sometimes even all) the notes in that piece fall on the scale associated with that key (eg, g-flat major scale or a minor scale) and (2) the tension in the music is released on the tonic (first note/chord) of that key

    Being completly honest, do you think taking online lessons on skype works just as well as presential ones? Would you recommend one over the other?
    I'm not sure if it's true or just a feeling that I have, but it seems like all teachers where I live are of the "sweet old lady down the street" type. I don't know, I just have a lot of trouble trusting their skill. I don't think there are any "universities" to look up to here in Brazil, at least I haven't heard of any.

      Azeew to be honest, I really enjoy it. As long as both sides have good internet connection, the lessons work very smoothly. Check out my video titled “Skype lessons” if you want more info about setup and logistics :)

    Hi Josh, wondering if you could help me. I’m not sure If I have a good piano teacher. I could be wrong.
    Here are some example that I think are negative;
    -they never play the piece that you’re going to play for a grade, always refers you to a RUclips video of the piece during the lesson.
    - If you say you’re struggling with something the teacher doesn’t give you a few options to improve upon the weakness for e.g sight reading, they tell you they can find pieces at your level and just to work through those. This has happened before and the pieces sent have had glitches, so I’ve played it and become frustrated because it doesn’t sound correct
    -starts and finishes lessons exactly on the dot each time.
    -Marks some of your theory work out of lesson (they have agreed to do this) occasionally gets it wrong but tells you at the time you’ve made a mistake so you go around in circles trying to figure why it’s wrong. Then the response to them getting it wrong is “that’s unusual I don’t get these wrong”
    - Tells you to message them if you’re stuck on theory or practical but there’s always a delay, sometimes answers are sent back the day before the lesson, even when you send work in advance.
    -has to be reminded what has been covered in the previous lessons
    There’s so much more but I’m just curious, are all these points generally normal things that teachers do?
    This teacher has good points too;
    -she’s calm
    -easy to get a long with
    Would really appreciate your advice please.
