Just a heads up. Im not a fan of the Soviet Union focus tree. So just a WARNING I have a bit of a moan in this video. Sorry in advance. I'm human To clear up any confusion I don't min-max 100% in these videos. I try to find a balance between my own fun and making the most of the game mechanics. ALSO I choose to play 'kinda' historical because I enjoy that more.
The fact that the Soviet Union can be the strongest country ever and then just absolutely get overrun by the Germans is bonkers Edit: I personally just send military advisors before my army so I can get Lister as a general if spain loses and get an overpowered general for the Soviet Union (putting him under Tukachevsky will be just way OP)
@@DL-xm1vlyeah. imo hoi4 is in serious need of balancing. on historical the soviets should push into germany proper every game. lately, the soviets have just been barely hanging on to moscow or even losing moscow and just waiting for the allies to invade and then the allies do all the work. the allies are fine, they work as intended, the d day, invade sicily, cap germany, etc. the soviets just seem like a big distraction to germany as opposed to a formidable opponents
14:00 a good tip: 175-140=35. you can do 2 70 day focuses and then do a 35 day focus, wait a single day and then pick whatever next purge focus you want without losing any focus tree time. also if you're always clicking and timing your focuses you can go through the entire paranoia mechanic with one or two forged reports without having a single rng event
Another pro tips. The purges add 30 paranoia but also remove 50, so you want to have 20 or more paranoia when the purge focus is finished, else you're wasting some of that reduction. ALSO, the closing the popup window that you have to click through when the purge is done is what triggers the -50. And it will stick around for almost 2 whole weeks, so if you're at ~47 paranoia, you can wait a week with the tool tip open, get to 50, then close it, getting you back to 0. Else, you would close it early and be back up to 3. Not a huge difference, but if min-maxing... And I don't understand the skipping of the 5 year plan bonus. I find them to be incredible, especially going down the left side and getting a 100% speed bonus and 2 year reduction for focused/dispersed industry.
I @@Klemeq Oh yes when do the focus tree, I actually complete the focuses that give you the bonus for the five year plan, they turn Russia into a beast. Also I have found that you can do other short 35 day focusses while waiting for the purge events. Even the forging of production reports can be a handy tool to lower the paranoia

Marshall Yegorov, Bljucher, Tuchacevskij always get purged by the Military Conspiracy focus. In addition some generals randomically get a -2 into attack and defense always 'cause of that focus
The paranoia system and the purges are only a problem if you are playing the Stalin path of the focus tree, the historical one. If you go for any of the ahistorical paths, it's actually a good thing because it increases the support of whatever military branch Stalin is messing with.
I play USSR a lot. I just finished a WW2 into cold war, into WW3 game as them and it was a blast. They have a lot of cold war civics and buttons to bring neutral states into your iron umbrella. Managing multiple theaters and thousands of jet planes with that late game tech you never touch is actually fun. Also I never rush the purges at first. I stick to the 2% for awhile while i try to get a research slot and hit the Spain and China civics before proceeding. I think its better overall for Barb prep but its whatever.
For those reading this 8 months later, send an attaché to Spain to put War support over 50%...FYI. You can get war economy in 1936 as USSR. Also, a neat trick to do with USSR is create a spy agency and send to Sinkiang for diplomatic pressure. Raise your influence with them to max. Sometimes it gets a little buggy and stuck at 50/50 and you have to exit the game and get back in. Usually if you guarantee them or something it puts it over 50 and you can invite them into faction. IF Siankang is in the Comintern they will 100% agree to all the things from Gobi Gambit. IF they aren't in your faction they will usually decline.
I know you werent trying to min max everything, but tips for others playing USSR: 1. Build inf in high inf areas until switch economy law and if in need of more oil or other resources maybe key other areas. 2. Probably go for propaganda focus so can use decision to reduce consumer goods. 3. At some point build mils in urals or eastern USSR for total of 3 mils in X locations so that you can take the one focus to get a ton of free mills (like 8 or 10). 4. There is a focus that gives you a propaganda decision thst increases attack bonus against Axis very useful. 5. There is a focus that gives ton of exp from Spain war and free general if republicans lose so take it.
I believe the outcome of the purges are all pre-determined, so as long as you are doing focuses in the right order and clicking the decisions to reduce paranoia as frequently as you can, you shouldn't have to deal with much randomness because you will almost always be below the threshold for random events. And even if you do get a random event, there's a good chance it's not something that will debuff you permanently (for example your air force being worse for a year or two doesn't matter in 1936). Losing all the cool advisors kinda sucks though.
Also the timings for when you can do the different purges lines up with your focuses pretty neatly, IIRC (it's 175 days so two 70-day focuses +1 35 day one)
never seen your videos before, but really appreciate your love for community, either in some words or while revealing some tricks of the game. subbed, hope you're doing well
Late for the commentary but i still say i like this long semi unedited playthrough and judging from the view everyone else too. So yeah keep it coming. This is great.
If you are not getting supply in Spain you can just walk one of your divisions to a port and for some reason that also causes the game to recalculate supply in the region. Reloading works too but if in a multiplayer game it's not always an option.
the MIO for CAS for SU is the one for Medium planes, Ilyushin. They historically made Il-2s. Medium frame with AT cannons is just *chefs kiss* AS for the war support, you send attaches
The reason you're no longer allowed to Lend-Lease the Spanish Civil War is because people used that as an exploit for the civil war, so Paradox decided to force communism to meet the World Tension threshold, but gave Soviets a focus that allows them to specifically lend-lease Spain. That way, you can't do the exploit as the White faction. Well, except you still can, you just need to raise WT to 50%. Which you can do by justifying on the US and the cancelling it.
Good thing the devs haven't worked in the that you have to redo the rail lines if you invade into Europe, or you invade into Russia as Germany. Historically the Soviets used an entirely different rail gauge so a train made in the west could not operate on Soviet rails or a Soviet train could not operate on European rails. The Soviets used this to their advantage as the Germans invaded the USSR by blowing up locomotives they had to leave behind, so the Germans had to stop and lay down new rail lines to use for their logistics which stalled them significantly along with the Russian winter.
This is really good content. I actually enjoy folks just playing the game without any major objective but just having fun. I especially like the fact that you went into operation unthinkable. most folks just end at WW2 and I actually really enjoy the End Game stuff especially if its really challenging.
The "never surrenders" and "have to take every tile" is a really fuccking annoying thing to deal with even in god damnn Paraguay. I dont want to imagine how that would work in Russia. That would just be pure torture for sure.
A few things that are helpful Dave, send an attache to Republican spain and you can get war economy very early. Also may want to go for the actual industry stuff a lot earlier. The baltics stuff are now a focus where you spend PP and they become yours without fighting. Soviets become so powerful doing this that you often will have an army of 6 or so million men on the front line and then Germany just wont even declare on you. Good job with the videos they are enjoyable for sure.
As for field marshals that get purged: it's usually Tukachevsky, Blyukher, and Yegorov. The only ones still available after purges are usually Voroshilov and Budyonny if I remember correctly. But with generals like Konev, Zhukov, and Rokossovsky it's kind of balanced out when you promote them. Voroshilov and Budyonny suck anyway, lol.
Honestly, I would pay for a DLC that just cleaned up the crap that never worked as it should (like the thing with Japan sending the divisions), updating Focus Trees to actually make sense/work with newer mechanics, fix bugs that make no sense in other focus trees, make sure formables are actually viable, not some side meme, and just general game quality stuff like that. I'd also pay for a peace system that didn't suck. It sucked to start, then they redid it to make it better, and it's really not much better at all. I realize this will not sell to others, so we just get more focus trees to add monarchies in random places...yeah!

Nothing happens outside the internet, dave. This is the new "public square." Its where people go to socialize and get informed. That thought makes me shudder and heave uncontrollably.
how you can easily get extra war support in 1936 is by sending attache to Rep. Spain once the war starts. then you can switch to war economy right away.
Dave, I'm the person you gave the comment on previous video(germany) that the fun is fun. ( I thought that it was a sort of guide, how to be tough for a country) I agree, we play for fun. But the question is what's this video about(I don't read discord)? Educate and explain some tricky things? (for example, I had known about switching weather and smooth off only around year\half of the year ago, although I've been playing in hoi4 from it's release. and played hoi2 and 3. yes, I'm old). Such things could deserve special video which can be easily found by caption. Is it guide how to play for a country (like how to build EU for germany)? obviously not. I mean, that I got a pleasure watching this video(thank you), but its format is unclear. it's not a guide, it's not showing of some rare path/scenario which could inspire me to play it. just usual long game which I can play by myself. Long videos are not bad, but it's probably just better to give them more informative hype header and be more specific in format :) Nevertheless, like, grats, cheers
yeah, you show many tricks in gameplay, that can attract new players, but for old ones, there are so many "mistakes". just one of them out of my mind: you did right fighting with finland till the end. but it's better to puppet it, not protecting northern border. I was facepalming watching how you send troops to that border and retreat there.
For the guys who want to be max efficient: it's better to improve railways closer to the war, when your construction speed is higher due to improvements and you have taken propaganda campaign for building railway
I'm gonna argue that you are objectively wrong about the purges because you have more control over them now then you had with the old 'events' that was more random. Every time you get a 'general X is accused of treason' you can choose to kill him or the accuser which usually means you can keep 90 % of the good generals you start with. The good Field Marshals all die but there are loads of good replacements which makes it a non-issue. The purge modifiers are annoying for early wars but if you play semi-historical and rush the Great Purge Focuses they will all be gone before the Winter War.
I just finished my first Soviet Union game after NSB (my least favorite nation to play). Got all but one Soviet achievements and it ended up being a world conquest. I didnt even get to do whole focus tree before I was left with no enemies. I used 35 width divisions with 3 artillery and rest infantry + support companies. I only missed the Race for Germany achievement because I beat them before they even capitulated France. When taking on Allies I didnt have to do anything else than just battleplan and naval invade, the buffs you get are that strong. Yes I feel like Soviet Union is just a tad bit op.
I also hate the paranoia system, though I think if the game had a way to get advisors (Civilian) it would lesson it but I've had bad RNG where all the best Advisors just get off'd way to early and then I'm running none. Also didn't know the fix to the Republican Spain no equipment bug thanks.
Thank you for these videos. And i agree that the spy system is lackluster. It gives so little but requires so much attention. Honestly, the best system for spycraft i’ve ever played was the original 80/90s Masters of Orion where you invested GDP into building spy networks that you could then dedicate to certain tasks. Everything since has just be so needlessly complex. Also, give me a reason to build dedicated scouts. I feel all aircraft should be able to be set to scouting but a dedicated scout does it better.
He says he doesnt expect us to watch the whole video... we got lives he says... My guy, when I see an Every Click video im here to see all the clicks and miss none
Haven't played in a long time. Is the attack Turkey strat still viable? As then taking both them and Romania allows removing more debufs earlier and you can really shorten the line with Germany. As well as removing Germany's access to their oil.
Soviet union is such a cool nation but play with Stalin you lose a lot of generals and field marshal, a like to play with Alexey rikov nice industry and all army save, I hope paradox fix some issues in the focus.
If I wasn't going through a divorce I'd throw money your way. You have amazing content. Churn it out like a gigachad bro. I'll watch your content anytime
Collab Dave with you and TommyKay. Say one Italy and one Germany. Working together with buffed Allies? Or maybe Bring back the central powers. Would love to see it
FYI if you dislike the purging and paranoia mechanics but still want to remain in a semi-historical leftist russia path then go for the right oposition path, it's stronger than the base stalin path and if you do it correctly you don't even need to go into the civil "conflic" route. Bubbles zest made a great guide on it and dave did a video on it a year ago too.
Hey, it looks like you didn't assign a field marshal to the army group (in the beginning of OP Barbarossa against you). Was there a particular reason for that?
Hello everyone, I have a problem and it is that today I bought the Arms Against the Tyranny DLC and it doesn't work for me, I don't have the market or the new focus trees, only the one in Finland, but the other Nordic countries don't. . Does this have a solution? I'm very nervous.
Hey Dave, is it worth it to build infrastructure? That's how I always start my playthroughs, by upgrading infrastructure to the max in the already high infrastructure areas. I just wonder if it's more efficient to ignore it, might need some math to be done to figure that out.
For soviet union, its worth it in Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad, Stalingrad and i think its Kursk? The other 80% infa slot before you get war economy. You need to build 6 civs or like 12 mils on a single tile to make it worth in civilian economy. In partial or anything more it's never worth. Exception is if you need the resources.
Same here, not a fan of Sov purges, but that's just the normal reaction in fact! Previous purge system was too easy! (eventually with the old purge system, I was doing something to not purge any general (not sure if it works with that current purge system), deleting all units, all divisions template (keeping the garrison one since you can't delete it), creating one super expensive with tanks from the garrison template (deleting some stockpile to not share with AI) and then going civil war instead and the AI couldn't create any div while I could create a new template easily with my xp and get horse div quickly) Lot of lost time ofc but I never liked losing the generals I wanted to use. (since I didn't check the name on purge, I always got 1 purged per event) In comparison, the current purge is horrible!
Ngl i just remember which generals get purged and just don't use them. The only purge event that is restorable in MP is if you get understaffed government or whatever its called.
The big bummer for me is that the soviet naval tree is actually pretty good. If you do all the naval buildup focuses you get up to 22 dockyards, which is ridiculous since you start out with 6. Also, depending on what you choose you can get 2 battleships, 3 super heavy battleships and even a carrier through focuses. The only problem is that its the soviet union, so why would you even do them?
@@Chrissnessable The thing is though, the 5 year plan focuses are all 35 day focuses, which are perfectly timed with the paranoia focuses. Since feedback likes to play the buildup, theres not much point in getting the army focuses right away.
Neat video, can you explain how you got 102 factories in January -36? I am scratching my head trying figure out the industry, and frankly 100 factories would solve a lot of them (Five year plan etc.)
So that bug with Spanish CW and resupply is due to Turkey and straits. At least if Internet is to be believed, removing strait mechanic as a mod fixes it, but it also removes strait mechanic. Need to test if reloading works for ironman, but as it is helping with civil war is kinda rough.
My main problem with the soviet purge mechanic is that it randomizes the whole affair, feeding into the myth that the purges were nothing more than random paranoia, while in reality most of the people purged were actually involved in conspiracies specifically targeting the government. The main field marshal that gets purged for example historically was found out to be conspiring with the germans to overthrow the soviets.
Wasn’t Mikhail Tukhachevsky purged because he couldn’t hide his Coca-Cola addiction? Like I read somewhere he had a whole operation of illegal coke imports.
İ play with Soviet union at least 360 divisions and sometimes 480 in the German-Romanian front. 18 with infantry with engineer, logistics and anti air as support companies. İ just build heavy fighters for air battle and made the actual push and encirlements with heavy tanks wich i have 12 of them in 1942. 42 with heavy tanks. İ find out that they push 42 with infantry easily if you have just 120 of them. But if you have 21 with 240 divisions they are struggling. İnstead of making good divisions but less its better to do more divisions even if they are not that good.

Keep up the content Dave, love your videos 😊
Nice, next pls make one for Japan but without the same cheese we see in every youtube video where you can justify on Netherlands in 1936 or rush USA
I'd like that! Soon!
Nothing happens outside the internet, dave. This is the new "public square." Its where people go to socialize and get informed. That thought makes me shudder and heave uncontrollably.
Love your timestamps!
Just added
Another minmax video, I was just watching your Italy video yesterday 😅😅😅
Can you please do France next
Keep up the good work mate
how you can easily get extra war support in 1936 is by sending attache to Rep. Spain once the war starts. then you can switch to war economy right away.
Dave, I'm the person you gave the comment on previous video(germany) that the fun is fun. ( I thought that it was a sort of guide, how to be tough for a country)
I agree, we play for fun.
Long videos are not bad, but it's probably just better to give them more informative hype header and be more specific in format :)
Nevertheless, like, grats, cheers
It's a follow along with me style scenario. By showing more gameplay and all the clicks I make it can hopefully teach you more of the game
yeah, you show many tricks in gameplay, that can attract new players, but for old ones, there are so many "mistakes". just one of them out of my mind: you did right fighting with finland till the end. but it's better to puppet it, not protecting northern border. I was facepalming watching how you send troops to that border and retreat there.
Trust me there were no intentional mistakes. My intent was to play for fun.
For the guys who want to be max efficient:
it's better to improve railways closer to the war, when your construction speed is higher due to improvements and you have taken propaganda campaign for building railway
Railway company is strong
Thank you for the conscientious connivence
dave tell me if you read my comment also cool video good on you looks like a lot of work to edit lol.
I do! ;)
We’re eating well tonight bois! ❤ hope your feeling better Dave ❤
I love how you say the Soviets can snowball, but every time I play, with or without mods, they get dumpstered by Germany every time
Can. Pretty much any nation can with a human player. But especially some. Like the Soviets.
Dave you are the greatest ❤
I like this kind of videos.
Soviets are a wrecking machine with a player that knows what they are doing.
LAD
I am commenting to yes if you really reading all the comments , allso to boost this video in the algorithm
Thanks for the video
Haven't played in a long time. Is the attack Turkey strat still viable? As then taking both them and Romania allows removing more debufs earlier and you can really shorten the line with Germany. As well as removing Germany's access to their oil.
Yes. However it breaks my historical rule
Soviet union is such a cool nation but play with Stalin you lose a lot of generals and field marshal, a like to play with Alexey rikov nice industry and all army save, I hope paradox fix some issues in the focus.
Honestly never seen anyone play like this... but Low-key I like it 😅
you say you hate this focus tree, but looks like you actually really enjoyed it lol
Held fairly well with only 3 research slots and forgot a field marshall.
Not to bad.
Great video ❤
If I wasn't going through a divorce I'd throw money your way. You have amazing content. Churn it out like a gigachad bro. I'll watch your content anytime
❤️❤️❤️
Collab Dave with you and TommyKay. Say one Italy and one Germany. Working together with buffed Allies? Or maybe Bring back the central powers. Would love to see it
That thick lane means border of the state, thin lane is border of the province it works the same in all pdx games for last decade or so
Another clickius maximus? What is this, christmas? oh wait...
Whats this, another hour of juicy content? Don't mind if i do, now can we reach 3?
FYI if you dislike the purging and paranoia mechanics but still want to remain in a semi-historical leftist russia path then go for the right oposition path, it's stronger than the base stalin path and if you do it correctly you don't even need to go into the civil "conflic" route. Bubbles zest made a great guide on it and dave did a video on it a year ago too.
I had no idea the civil war equipment but was a thing, I thought it was just how that worked lol
you plan on doing a world domination series if you haven't already?
What's a world domination series?
@@FeedbackGaming going threw the country's trying to achieve world domination with each one.
Just sent an attaché for 10% war support, boosts you over 50%
Hey, it looks like you didn't assign a field marshal to the army group (in the beginning of OP Barbarossa against you). Was there a particular reason for that?
It's an old bug. Shows a blank portrait but a field marshal is assigned. In this case it was actually a missing marshal woops
@@FeedbackGaming I see.
Hello everyone, I have a problem and it is that today I bought the Arms Against the Tyranny DLC and it doesn't work for me, I don't have the market or the new focus trees, only the one in Finland, but the other Nordic countries don't. .
Does this have a solution? I'm very nervous.
Best play through streamer, been following since the old Netherlands play through’s
Dave if your reading this you kind of lookalike Stalin
Hey Dave, is it worth it to build infrastructure? That's how I always start my playthroughs, by upgrading infrastructure to the max in the already high infrastructure areas. I just wonder if it's more efficient to ignore it, might need some math to be done to figure that out.
95% of the time, no
For soviet union, its worth it in Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad, Stalingrad and i think its Kursk? The other 80% infa slot before you get war economy. You need to build 6 civs or like 12 mils on a single tile to make it worth in civilian economy. In partial or anything more it's never worth.
Exception is if you need the resources.
Same here, not a fan of Sov purges, but that's just the normal reaction in fact! Previous purge system was too easy!
(eventually with the old purge system, I was doing something to not purge any general (not sure if it works with that current purge system), deleting all units, all divisions template (keeping the garrison one since you can't delete it), creating one super expensive with tanks from the garrison template (deleting some stockpile to not share with AI) and then going civil war instead and the AI couldn't create any div while I could create a new template easily with my xp and get horse div quickly)
Lot of lost time ofc but I never liked losing the generals I wanted to use. (since I didn't check the name on purge, I always got 1 purged per event)
In comparison, the current purge is horrible!
As soviet union, you can pump out 40+ medium tank per day in 1941 and make a division with 12 infantry and 4 tanks, which Germany cant beat you
Did you not do any of the 5 year plan focuses??
Ha no. Already have a stupid amount of factories, I'd prefer to focus on fixing paranoia and fixing Amy debuffs
@@FeedbackGaming fair nuff
Dave reads too many newspapers and too few proper history books.
Curious why you didn’t dip into rockets to get those for your fighter/attack aircraft.
True. That would've been ideal to maintain the agility of the fighters. Bomb locks do more ground attack. It depends If you've won Air war
Lore of SOVIET UNION Is STILL OP In Arms Against Tyranny momentum 100
be sure to check out the most unbalanced way of the USSR with access to the Supreme Council
Have you ever played or have videos on the Old World Blues expansion of HOI4?
İ play with Soviet union at least 360 divisions and sometimes 480 in the German-Romanian front. 18 with infantry with engineer, logistics and anti air as support companies. İ just build heavy fighters for air battle and made the actual push and encirlements with heavy tanks wich i have 12 of them in 1942. 42 with heavy tanks. İ find out that they push 42 with infantry easily if you have just 120 of them. But if you have 21 with 240 divisions they are struggling. İnstead of making good divisions but less its better to do more divisions even if they are not that good.
Cool LARP
More!!!
