  • Australia 108 is Australia's highest Residence, in fact, it is home to the highest Residence in the Southern Hemisphere. The Structural design of Australia 108 required the engineering to overcome many issues with the design from poor founding material in coode island silt to high wind load to allow for Melbourne's tallest skyscraper to be built.
    It is Australia 2nd tallest Building only being beaten by the Q2 on the Gold Coast, with the spire exceeding the height of Australia 108.
    Australia 108 was not without it's issues it has suffered from a term known as the creaking tower syndrome, where mild wind forces the tower to creak. The creaking of Australia 108 isn't of structural concern, what to the end to find out the cause of the creaking.
    Australia 108 holds some titles
    Australia's 2nd tallest building
    Being home to Southern Hemisphere Heightest Residence
    and it did hold the title of Australia most expensive Apartment.

    When I first heard about the principles behind a Tuned Mass Damper my reaction was like "woah".
    I think a video about it or maybe some examples of buildings which use it (there are some in Taipei, if I'm not wrong) would be an awesome content. Anyway, the video was really interesting, in particular the part about the foundation system which is usually complex in large scale buildings. Keep up the good work!

      Hi Tonio, yes tuned mass dampers are impressive. It would be great to make a video on them, it also lends to a video with a physical example. Just need to work out the best way to show there true magnificent. Thanks for you continued support.

    In my opinion, the creaking also come from the joints between the upper and lower precast wall panels that have not been fully grouted, just like what happened to the notorious Opal Tower in Sydney.

    Would love further thoughts on the creaky tower syndrome Brendan. Thinking of the stud wall to soffit/floor connections, I would say the driver is either in the stud wall detail not allowing for any movement / movement gap; or the tower having unacceptable serviceability deflections above what is Australian standard (movements are taking up any standard gap in the connection). Hopefully not the 2nd option as I imagine it would be very difficult to fix on such a lean tower

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  3 года назад

      Hi Bryce agree it could be either. But guessing it isn't the latter as this would cause more issues to the facades. They have a solution to fix the issue, but not sure how tested it is. As far as I am aware it changes the connections between the stud and the top and bottom track to allow for movement. Guess it would also require some alteration to fixing of the wall linings.

      Hey Deepak, I will look at what I can do around why towers have been creaking in Melbourne. That software was Simscale, the other was a wind tunnel testing with comment added in davinci resolve.

    I enjoyed your video. However, I live on the 31st floor of Australia 108, and I don't feel safe on days like today, with a wind of 31 km/h; it is just too much. I can send you the recordings.

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  2 года назад

      Hi Gina I would appreciate any recording you can send through. Tall buildings can move a long way before they have issues, it maybe uncomfortable but it should be safe. Hope the wind slows down.

    At a quick glance, you look like the Project Manager Darcy Holden 😄 wearing similar glasses. How do you feel the future value of these AUS. 108 properties when Green Spine has been approved which even higher than 108?

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  3 года назад

      Hi Chow Chow, I never met him will need to look him up. Aus 108 will still be unique to the Melbourne skyline with its starburst. The green Spine is very impressive; I cant wait to see it get built. Everyone will always want something new and shiny, but it should have long term issues with value, and any new tower it will not be new forever.

    ah yes i was watching this building go up, then i started working in Ballarat so i never got to see it finished yet. Im suprised they wouldnt allow it to go the few extra stories because of aircraft, but upon further investigation it seems it was at odds with Essendon airport not Melbourne airport. Essendon is not an international airport, its mainly used for private civilian aviation, and im super suprised that they let the building not be built considering its right at the outter reigion of the airspace. The fact your allowed to climb out over the city is a suprise enough to me lol.

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  3 года назад +1

      Hi Chris agree, and you are correct I would have said a Melbourne Airport. Seem odd that Essendon Airport would restrict it. The heigth restrictions have now been lifted from my research, guess they had second thoughts. With so much space to climb out of essendon you think they could avoid the CBD, guessing that is what the changes to flight paths have proposed.

    • @mangoandguitar
      @mangoandguitar 3 года назад +2

      It was Essendon airport, at one point it was getting a lot of negative attention for also casting a small shadow on a few days a year on the Shrine of Remembrance.
      One thing I never understood about all these flight path requirements for the High rises in Melbourne is the fact the Tower cranes substantially tower over the buildings final height over a year while the tower is being constructed.

    Can this building stand a magnitude 8 earthquake?

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty  2 года назад

      Hi _ a
      I didn't design this build, so insure. However, tall building typically are better resisting earthquake forces; this is due to the building being flexible this absorbed the load into motion. And are typically governed by wind. It would far better then shorter building but mag 8 earthquake is huge.
