In this episode of General Knowledge I talk about four regions / independence movements that might be able to reach independence by next year, or at least make significant steps towards it. They are Rojava, in Northern Syria; Tigray, in Northern Ethiopia; West Papua in the Indonesian half of the Papua Island; and North Yemen, in Yemen.

I did the 23&me test and it came back 100% Irish with Southwest Ireland (where I'm from) being very close. It also said I have less than 2% neanderthal DNA.
North Yemen was an independent country during the cold war; it was fundamentalist Shia and backwards aligned with the US. South Yemen was more developed, Sunni but less populated aligned with the Soviets. The secular south took control of the north and unified the country until the fundamentalists took control of the government. There is a civil war right now.
Wrong the north dominates the unifed Yemen
Trannslation: another of those examples of Christopher Hitchens being right...
South took control of the north? Excuse me but in what alternate universe are you living in??
Not exactly allied with the US. They had some Saudi influences and in fact the Saudis intervened more than once in the North Yemen civil war. But the US itself never had much interest in Yemen.
Thanks for the cool vid! Some of these flags are epic 😁 Isn’t Bougainville moving towards independence? That might be 2027, I’m not sure
Thanks! I think it is yeah but since it's already a certain thing I didn't want to include it among these potential possibilities.
Rojava (Java like the island of Indonesia but with a French accent), not Rohava, it's a Kurdish word meaning 'west', from Rojavayê Kurdistanê (Western Kurdistan)
Why do people not pronounce the J like in Spanish lol 😂 Kurdish doesn't do that 😂
Bro pronounced Baloch as Balok several times too lmao. Zero interest in googling how to pronounce it, just wants to give generic facts
As someone from Indonesia, West Papua's independence is going to be difficult because there's still a lot of infighting. Even if they manage to get their independence, it won't become a stable country unless they get the support of another superpower western country supporting them, but that's the thing. If America, Australia, or Europe support West Papua, Indonesia is going to become more pro-China, and that's something that the west doesn't want.
Plus, this may be controversial to say, but I can see Indonesia normalizing its relationship with Israel to gain American support rather than letting West Papua go independent.
Agreed
Yeah unfortunately, i really hope that our nation just treats our fellow brothers better
Indonesia is first among equals in asean. A stable political climate there is crucial for the region. PAPUA and ARMM is more or less the same. PH is a unitary state like ID and maybe they can take a look on the BANGSAMORO formula- it is new, not perfect but so far so good. 🇵🇭🤝🇲🇨

Greenland, New Caledonia, Basque Country, Western Sahara, United Korea, United Ireland, Taiwan, more interesting West Taiwan.
Don't forget Tibet!
@@bluegold1026 It's "new countries that might exist in 2025", Tibet has no chance of gaining independence in 2025.
Thank you. A heartfelt gratitude for supporting us in Taiwan, but most of us Taiwanese don't anymore want to integrate 1.4 billion Chinese who have completely different mindsets (and brain*****ng). It's just trouble: We just want to live our lives in peace.
United Ireland ehhh, idk if it'll happen this decade. It'll always be controversial. The reasons for the divide go back to the 1600s, it's caused terrorism, guerilla war, civil war. It's a heavy subject and NI will likely split off from the united ireland in the future
I didn't know about West Taiwan! How does it differ from the island as a whole?
You forgot Biafra in Nigeria. Independence movements are currently waging an insurgency against the government there, and separatists have recently arranged an independence referendum, so we could very possibly see Biafra declare independence in 2025, something which they have discussed. (It has a history of seeking independence, from 1967-1970 it waged a war of independence against the Nigerian government).
Hoping for the best in Biafra, they just want to stay away from the Islamists up north: but a unilateral secession will never work in international law.
And it's unlikely Biafra, ambazonia, or any other western Africa separatist movement will succeed
@@YeenMage im muslim and i agree
I did a full video about Biafra a while ago! It's definitely an interesting case but I would say even more unlikely than these four. They might vote and declare independence again but they seem to be in an even more fragile position now than when they tried and failed the first time.
@SirCapyTheSecond why would it matter that you're Muslim. Islamists are different from muslims
As a Syrian, Rojava has been renamed to AANES (Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria), as they in no way want to secede from Syria. They want autonomy for the Kurds from the regime
Rojava sounds better
@@Lockfly I guess so, but AANES emphasizes its commitment to autonomy
only for the kurds or like, can anyone go there? (like iraqi kurdistan)
Trust me Tigray will never break away from Ethiopia
They have little reason to. Ethiopia isnt prospering so why would the even smaller Tigray nation? Everyone deserves self determination, but must always remember the price of independence.

Puntland just wants autonomy, not full independence. Somaliland (the former British colonial territory) does want independence and has some backing from Ethiopia.
There’s no way that Rojova wil get independence even though they should, the second one part of Kurdistan breaks away others will try to do the same.

Kurds are like Poles in a way. We were partitioned and stateless for a long time, just like the Kurds. My nation took on the pressure of Russification and Germanization simaltenously. There were failed uprisings but Polish national identity survived. Kurds will get freedom as well in the future.
@@polishstick0609 idk about that, the kurds never had a state since there was no need for it. recently it's come into play because of the napoleonic/liberal ideals of nationalism and such arriving to the middle east post colonization.
As a Frisian, its still weird to me seeing stickers saying "From the Tjonger to the sea, Fryslân will be free" stickers around the province. the Tjonger 'river' being sort of the language border. I know we are culturally different but never really thought or knew about a serious independent movement. Ive heard some claims for the Historic 'Magna Frisia' region, And i think thats what the map in the start tries to show, partly. But i can never see the province of Groningen being part of a Frisian independence movement with the general hate many people there have towards us Frisians and our culture.

I know you do not have bad intentions but in 8:32 you are using a picture depicting "Abdullah Öcalan" - recognized as a terrorist group called PKK internationally even in EU. You are mentioning "self-defense" but these groups have burnt villages and even killed babies of their own ethnicity in Turkey. I invite you to do your research deeper and be more mindful about this issue.
In the longer term, we are now looking at the probability of consolidation. Three huge empires: a Chinese one comprising Asia and (possibly) Australasia; a Russian one comprising the old USSR plus most or all of Europe; and an American one comprising the Americas and, maybe, for linguistic reasons, the UK and/or Australasia...the wild cards are Africa and (what will be the last really large more-or-less democracy) India, which I could perhaps see uniting as a fourth empire (and it would be the most democratic of the four).
Sounds dystopian. And it is. But that is where we're headed in the next half century, unless quite a few things change dramatically.
Yemen should never have been merged.
West Papua has the right to independence. Just like East Timor had.
Like Timor Leste? You mean 'feel to civil war', than Australia stool all of the resource, and still depanden to Indonesia.😂😂😂
you forgot about French Guiana proposed to be independence from France to be called republic of Amazonia
In order to achieve independence, the population must support themselves and be the majority; the native population is a tiny minority so it will never happen. In addition, they lack cultural backbone and language. Vive le France.
I think Puerto Rico had proposed to become independent from United States too, but I wouldn’t know what their full name would be called.
If French Guiana becomes its own country in the future, then their nationality would be Amazonian with their full name being Republic of Amazonia! At that point, South America would have a total of 13 countries!! 🙂

From Scotland here (which may also be independent one day, though who knows when). I'm interested in the DNA test though also skeptical of it. The family tree research my mum has done on both sides of my family all are either Scottish or Irish or other Celtic routes in the British Isles. But we keep thinking there must be some Italian in there somewhere because both me and my mum have been thought of as italian, as well as my mum's dad when he was around. I also seem to take a tan better than would be expected from a white celt haha, and seem to have a different temperature tolerance too.

Could you do a video on how South Yemen was the only communist country in Arabia
I am Dutch, but my father was born in the 60s in Dutch New Guinea. I am not pro-Papua or anything like that. What I do know is that Sukarno hated the Dutch so much, that he also wanted to incorporate Dutch New Guinea into Indonesia. The Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and Dutch New Guinea (Papua) were two different administrative entities. But Sukarno wanted all the areas that the Dutch had colonized and to continue this under the Republic of Indonesia.
But how come my family is from Dutch New Guinea? That is because my family is mixed race and my other family is Moluccan. After the independence of Indonesia my family was banished and Dutch New Guinea was to become the new country for the Indos (mixed race), Chinese, Moluccans and others. Because the Dutch government did not want to transfer us to the Netherlands. It must also be said that not all regions in the Indonesian archipelago wanted to belong to the Republic of Indonesia, such as the Moluccas and Aceh.
Anyway, eventually Dutch New Guinea was transferred to Indonesia under false pretenses and my family migrated to the Netherlands. Between 1950 and 1963 about 350,000 people migrated from the Indonesian archipelago to the Netherlands. Currently there are 2 million people with an Indonesian background living in the Netherlands.
But if I may give an opinion about West Papua, it is that ethnically, linguistically and culturally it does not belong to Indonesia. But it is part of Indonesia now, so I hope that the Indonesian government can make Papua prosperous in the future.
if every ethnicities in indonesia become independent, there would be more than 700 of them.
Lol there are 1300 ethnicities and 700 native languages here, so who you really count as belong to "Indonesia"? 😂 Indonesia is just a national identity not some ethnobased identity like you have in Nation state Europe
As someone who lives in Indonesia, it is quite the controversial topic. Whenever we talk about it, it can be difficult or even scary. As there are lots of problems in that island, ranging from prices to even human rights. Recently a large chunk of the trees will be chopped down for palm oil productions, which angered the locals as they have a connection to the forest. A lot of Indonesians oppose the idea of it gaining independence, however there are a few people who began to recognize the issue and start to think differently than what the gov intend to.
This situation is honestly quite messy; I discussed this with a friend not too long ago, they're also torn about this. The independence organization committed several atrocity but also the people in charge are just as corrupt and atrocious. If you ever wondered, was there a point in time where Papua would never be part of Indonesia? There was. The first Vice President of Indonesia, Muhammad Hatta, opposed the idea of incorporating them as part of the republic. As he believed that they're ethnically, linguistically and culturally different than most other ethnic group here. But the rest didn't agree with him as they want to unite the entire Dutch East Indies to be succeeded as Indonesia.
I wish I could talk about this more honestly, it's an anxious convoluted problem in the back of my head. Anyways, thank you for stating your opinion :)

10:10 Many native West Papuans have rather positive memories of Dutch colonization. Especially in the period (1949-1962) right after Indonesian independence when, out of the Dutch East Indies, only West Papua remained Dutch and became the overseas territory Dutch New Guinea.
This time the Dutch government took a very different approach compared to what they did before in the Dutch East Indies and actually started building infrastructure, setting up an economy, educating the local people and spreading a national Papuan identity. The idea was to have Dutch New Guinea be an indepedent state that could stand on it's own feet in the near future, but that never happened.
Eventually due to international pressure, the Dutch government lacked the proper backbone and abonded the West Papuan people by letting Indonesia just undemocratically annex the whole place.

So, I know it's just a technicality but the Ethiopian constitution actuallt states that any of its federal regiojs can secede. Through a due process of referendum and time. Knowing that I'd say Tigray should try this, but I don't really know if Ethiopia would respect their choice
That article in the consititution was drafted mainly by TPLF that was ruling the country and Tigray until recently. They had a far better chance to do so in the early 90s same as Eritrea but they decided not to for various reasons, some being: landlocked and entirely surrounded by unfriendly nations, resource limitations namely not enough arable land (especially now that what they call "Western Tigray" is being administered by the Amhara regional government), border disputes with the Amhara and Afar regions in Ethiopia as well as Eritrea and more importantly a seccsionist movement has not been very popular (now might be more than not fresh off the war).
