I'm glad you talked about Car Lights, and I'm sorry that it brought such mixed feelings. I'm just a rando who likes your videos, but I wanted to say that all your music, but especially Car lights, has had a really positive impact on me at least. My whole life I have been scared of getting into a relationship, and that song and the way it made me feel, coupled with how you have talked about it in the past has pushed me to finally try finding someone. Being queer can be tough, but not all of us connect with you music because the tragedies, some of us connect because you music inspires us to be brave.

I love how James was able to take such serious topics and produce them into lyrics that can be interpreted in many ways; just proves how talented he is. My favourite songs from the album (not including ones released before the full release) are ‘Over my head’ and ‘In between’! I love the lyric “As the stress settles in, and forms it’s lines upon my skin”. As someone who struggled with sh for a while I love being able to listen to songs with lyrics like these because they make the song so much more relatable. Thank you so much James!! I can’t wait for the next album! 💗 In the meantime I’ll become even more traumatised, and watch your streams…

I'm gonna be completely honest, i had actual tears running down my face a few times throughout this video. This video actually helped a ton, and it makes me love the album even more. There's so many connections, parallels, and everything. I don't think I've ever been more emotional to music other than James', and I think for now, his music is my favourite music I've ever found. Even if it's not the best, I know that if I ever listen back to his music, it will give me memories. Especially because I started following him at a decently young age, I think that I didn't really have many things to attach memories with, except his music. I also think it's incredible that James is still here with us, and I'm so so so so grateful. Hella proud king

tbh listening to Car Lights (on repeat, for a while) was the first time i really realized the difference between when i was outed as queer to everyone in my life vs when i actually came out to myself. when i was outed, at 12 years old, the whole experience was drenched in trauma, and i did my best to play it off and embrace it but that shit hurted and i wasn't anywhere near ready to come out yet. so, for 10 years, that was it, in my mind. i didn't ever really ~come out~ as queer, i was simply outed and had to roll with it. but when i listened to Car Lights, it didn't make me think of the queer relationship i was in when i was outed. Car Lights brought me back so hard to a relationship two years later - one that actually got to be private.
the inner conflict of falling in love with my beautiful best friend, who had a tendency of moving on quick from romantic relationships; the stress and excitement of trying to keep our romance behind closed doors so our parents would let us continue having sleepovers; trying to swallow the fear of vulnerability and embrace the mortifying ordeal of being known; the nuance of wanting to be openly and publicly in a queer relationship, but feeling more comfortable with that around strangers rather than anyone i knew, even though everyone i knew had known i was queer for two years at that point and most of them were very accepting,,,,, and that's the part where somehow Car Lights so perfectly expresses for me that nuance of being outed but not out and the shift of finally coming out to myself and starting to aceept that part of myself.
and i know that's perhaps a hyper-specific experience and also not really exactly what Car Lights is about,,,,,,,, but to me, that's what it's about. and so Car Lights has given me a whole new perspective and narrative around my own experience of "coming out," one that is much more innocent, much more happy, and much more of my own experience rather than a choice someone else made for me.
sorry this isn't really about the whole ass Album and lyrics on it, i just wanted to pipe in about Car Lights being a positive experience

I love the song Romanticise This, but I dont understand the message, I thought it was about trying to leave a toxic person that is always trying to get a kiss or sexual contact so you fall in love or romanticise them, so i would find so interesting to see what the lyrics actually mean, btw love the album you are so talented :D

I’ll never get enough of artists conceptualising the meaning of their lyrics. The idea of rather than entirely ignoring it, and instead making amends with your old self to keep moving forward positively in You Are Here I think is something that people can really resonate with. Think a breakdown of Denial or honestly any song would be sick!

What James talked about at 8:39 is something I've always found interesting, I've dubbed it "Eye of the Storm Syndrome", although I'm sure there's a proper term I'm unaware of.
It seems as though this is something that a lot of people have experienced, this sense of hitting rock bottom, the lowest you've ever been, and finding peace there. For some, they're pushed to the brink of s*icide and find peace in a feeling of control, that they are no longer being forced to live and experience whatever they're going through, it suddenly becomes their choice to keep living and enduring.
For some, it's the feeling that they have reached such a low point that it can't get any worse, it creates a sense of optimism. The feeling of weathering a storm, and while everything around you is still destroyed, you find peace standing in the center of it.
Sorry to write an essay in the comments, but I find it fascinating that this is such a widely experienced phenomenon.

First off, James truly opening up about his suicidal thoughts, I’m so proud of you king. I know this was months ago but you have no idea how hard that hit me. I’m doing much better now but I do still struggle with negative coping skills. However when I did start heavily considering k!lling myself, I felt crazy. There were people in my life who told me I was basically being a selfish narcissist for opening up about my self harm and it made me want to keep it all in and never tell a soul ever again. You opening up about that helps give me that bit of clarity I needed at the time that many other people struggle with such topics, and it doesn’t make you invalid or narcissistic when opening up about them. Thank you. ❤

As someone who LOVES Don't Blame Me, ever since I listened to it, I always viewed it as having a bad relationship with someone (in my case, Toxic Friendships) and cutting my ties with them and still want them back despite my decision. In the lyric: "No this path never stops, and I'm already sick of the next mountain top. No this high couldn't last, in a moment it'll move on and stay in the past" reminds me of having so much fun with said friendships and then slowly realizing that my happiness is temporary and that there's a time where it'll all crash down and leave me quite depressed and I'll look back at the memories and think of how it was before. To the lyrics "We were never in love, so when we were fucking who were you thinking of? No, I'm never enough and I'll fall from your hands straight into your gloves." Reminds me of me constantly having one sided friendships growing up and care so much about 1 person while I mean nothing to them and continue to care for them even though they don't reciprocate at all.
TLDR: I view this song as having a bad relationship with people who don't care about you (one sided) but still care for them only for you to end up being hurt in the end no matter what.
Anyways, Thank you James for releasing such bangers that anyone can relate to. We appreciate it

I am still in awe of this album. I feel music very deeply and have always had music in my life (Playing instruments for 10 years/ singing and performing). I found Jame's Marriott on RUclips around 5 years ago when I moved out of my home state, a place that held so much trauma and yet so many good times. Whenever Jame's has released a song I always make it a point to listen to it over and over to try and dissect the lyrics and listen to each instrument. It truly goes to show with the album that lyrics are so fluid, what one person may interoperate as loosing loved ones may be leaving a home or dealing with depression. White noise was the song that spoke to me and I can't help but tear up every time I listen to it. When I was told by my parents that we were moving out of state I was absolutely heartbroken, I threatened to run away and do awful things to myself. I was heartbroken even thought my childhood in that state was some of the worst years of my life. I was in and out of psych wards and missed a lot of my young years (10-15) confined to hospital beds and misses out on school, forming friendships, spending time with family... and yet the thought of leaving broke me. Nearly 6 years later I am 20, nearing 21 on the 25th/12th and I am so grateful my parents made that choice. I met my partner at 15 and have been with him for 5 years, he is also a fan of your music and we always listen to your songs together. Now when I think about home I think about him and I think about my family. Thank you James

Just on a personal note, your songwriting has really inspired my own. I’m a firm believer in making song lyrics mean something and not just be dumb white noise that is meaningless and it’s very clear that you put real thought and effort into lyrics that describe very visceral periods in your life so just thank you, James. You’re a fantastic artist and you’re a real inspiration. Thank you.

I've been kinda fixated on awty since its release so i started making up my own explanations for lyrics and i just have to say i absolutely love how you could interpret any of the lyrics in so many ways yet they'd mostly be different from the actual meaning. i think the succession, like, from the start to the end of the album is really smooth and when you listen to all the songs in order it really paints a vivid picture.
that being said, I'd love an in depth video on every song but if i had to choose, I'd say "romanticise this" or "don't blame me".

Hey! I used to really enjoy your content as a RUclipsr... you brought me a lot of entertainment with your humorous videos and I appreciate that a lot. Imagine my surprise when Spotify recommended one of your songs back in 2020; "Slow Down" (and eventually "Him"). I could not relate to the songs, but I enjoyed the overall rhythm of them.
Your songs "In Between" and "White Noise" a few years later were the two that truly touched me and I still listen to them to this day. Everyone interprets music in their own way and often times it's very different from the artist... in my case, I discovered "In Between" and "White Noise" directly after a time in which I had reconciled with someone I was dating. He's an incredibly kind, sweet, and goofy person but he struggled as a partner to express his love properly for a long time. He was naturally distant and unsure of how to express his feelings aside from short plain words which made things feel disingenuous since his actions were always awkward and seemed to tell the opposite of his claims. He had been withdrawing from me and locking his emotions away from me when things got more serious.
Now in a better place in our relationship, I know now that back then he hadn't ever told anyone his genuine, sincere feelings on anything because he wanted to make people laugh. He didn't want to risk being a burden. Back then, I couldn't wrap my head around it; it was completely unlike how I expressed myself and he wasn't giving me any hint as to why he was being so distant and constantly making jokes out of serious conversations. It frustrated me and I didn't know it was his way of defending himself and keeping himself from being anyone's problems. I was so open and he wasn't; I thought he simply liked me while I loved him.
"In Between", for me, depicted how much I admired his kindness and cool temper towards everyone while so desperately wanting to see who he was underneath. I wanted to have that kind of control over my own emotions, yet at the same time, I wanted so badly to know what he was thinking and feeling. He'd always shrug any sincerity involving his own feelings off with a joke and never let me carry his burdens. "White Noise" has lyrics that touched my heart in a similar way, but it related more to the realization that I was failing to understand his position- that I needed to be more patient even if it hurt me to do so. I gave him space, which hurt like hell since I already felt so alienated from him and wanted nothing more than to be closer to him, but it eventually paid off.
It really is beautiful how music can be interpreted by people in so many different ways regardless of the intention of the writer... thank you for creating this art. I find peace in your lyrics in my own way, James, and I hope I may be able to warm your heart at least a little by leaving this comment as a reminder of how much your music may mean to the people who tune in.♥

This video definitely made me really emotional, I've always loved lyrics with an emotional meaning and when it's about their past, because it shows how far the person has come and how its basically telling the listener the story of that part of their life and when it was a low point, it gives another meaning about the song to me and I feel different screaming the lyrics out of my lungs .
Thanks for the banger album Jimbo :]

james!! thanks so much for covering some of the lyrics on your album, all the explanations are explained so well and it flowed so well, congratulations!!! if you were going to do a deep dive on a song or two on the album, could you either do over my head or the other side. i know they are deeply personal songs but how you have moved on from that dark time of your life is really interesting on how you look back on it and it really changed my perspective on my darkest time on how i had that time and now trying as hard as i can to keep running from that time. love you jimbo!!!!!!

I loved this video so much, its actually so nice to have songs that you can relate to, as well as them being written by someone who is clearly very empathetic towards others and is a person I really inspire to be like, I too hate my past self and found it really hard to move on from that, so to see where you are now, it gives me a bit more motivation to get over myself, thank you James for making this amazing music and really helping me through some tough times. I really don't think you know how much we love you James (platonically)

It is honestly the best thing i have ever listened to.

I can tell these lyrics mean so much to him and I'm so happy for him that he's happier now + can make music about his past stuggles while being able to talk about it this openly. James if you see this I'm so happy your music and yt career has come this far and for giving me a sense of comfort in your content and music. Ilysm🤍
