Thanks for watching and playing along with me! My name is Stuart Lehman-Brown, a teacher, music store owner, and musician in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, I set up shop performing and teaching here in the North Bay. 15 years and 50,000 lessons later I’m still going strong, and sooner or later I’m afraid I’m going to start posting videos of my dogs. It’s inevitable.

If you constantly write lyrics down, interesting thoughts you have, stories you come up with, words that sound nice melodically you’ll honestly never struggle to write lyrics again
👍👍
seems to be true is what i recently discovered in my journeys of being a musician. it’s very intriguing the whole process.
Yup, and then wish the tap would turn off once in awhile 😉
Tip 1: Avoid obvious rhymes
Tip 2: use other songs as templates!
Tip 3: Dont tell how you feel, use metaphors!!!! describe the things that i feel and see when i feel that certain emotion; pick something specific to you
Tip 4: The 5 word challenge... write down the overall message of the song in 5 words
Tip 5: make a list of phrases youre not allowed to start with
Bonus tip: hey yeah no ooh; use those words generously, those words go a long way!!!
Tbh as someone that has ADHD, this man not only managed to keep me attentive but I also learned something AND got a dopamine boost due to his nature. Thanks Stuart!

another thing that helped me a lot is to be more willing to stretch out words for longer than youre usually comfortable with, give em a few bars. also something that makes lyrics feel more natural and impactful at times is to give them more space, for a verse, instead of doing line after line of lyrics, throw some bars of just instrumental between them to let them breathe.
excellent video stuart, (though i fear you may be lonely and or sad based on very hidden contextual clues)
I can’t imagine Stuart without a guitar under the arm
Did I even play it at all in this vid?
@@marinmusic not a single time but I’m sure holding it the secret tip for songwriting
your authenticity makes this whole lot better. thanks for your tips Stuart little
That first tip you gave is a beauty,
it really means so much to me.
I really needed to hear tip #2. I’ve been writing lyrics for years and I was always embarrassed by the fact that I had to use existing songs as a template for my own
It’s the best. It gets you started immediately!
The tip about writing lyrics for a song that already exists is amazing and I use it all the time! And to expand on it, you can take a song with a similar message to what you want to say and think to yourself "If I had to add lyrics to this, what would I write?" and you use those!!
Yes this is my favourite way to write songs.
W this helps I’ve been writing a ton of lyrics at work but I tend to just drift out of a song and start on another when they start sounding repetitive
This and the song writing video were helpful a lot THANK YOU FATHER STUART 🙏

@@marinmusic we need more music theory, you’re a good teacher, whether it being chromatic scales or explaining music theory, I know it’s boring… but you’d break it down well for your followers
Hey Stuart, I have a question: Do you recommend starting with the lyric-writing, or starting with a melody, and writing lyrics to fit that. Because when I start with lyrics, I always find it hard to think of a unique melody to fit with it, and the exact problem arises the other way round: when I start with a melody, I struggle thinking of lyrics that fit into that tune. A question to add to this is: how do you recommend trying to think of a unique melody. As a huge consumer of music, I sometimes sporadically start humming something unique, but as soon as I realize I'm doing it, my brain automatically just reverts to some random song that sounds kinda similar, and the idea is just lost. Hope you're having a good day (I guess your trip was good as well?)
This is such a big question. Answer #1: every approach is a totally legit approach- lyrics first, melody first, both at the same time… Answer #2: I’ll dive into that in some upcoming vids 😉
Answer #3: I usually write lyrics first, but change them quite a bit as I’m writing the melody.
@@marinmusic Thanks Stuart!
It's easier to make a great piece of music without lyrics. If you write lyrics first then the music gets forced to comfort to them somehow and the actual creating of the music suffers as a result because it's much more difficult where as if you create the music and have basically the entire song worked out it can be used as inspiration for the lyrics because the music should have some kind of vibe already to base your ideas off of. People that write lyrics and then put music to them usually don't make music that is very creative or complex. Many famous bands do the music first, then vocalist goe's to work for reasons that I just described.
you could be a character from The Office XD ty for the tips!!!!
Have fun in Colorado tommorow
Thanks I actually already got back and I got sick there. But I played fortnight for the first time
For the bonus tips, I think Hey by Pixies is the best example, because they use Hey, Woo and Yeah in the same phrase
Youre awesome man
