  • Review of the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of the Robert Zemeckis 1985 classic 'Back To The Future' starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. This is the steelbook version and comes with a 4K disc and Blu-ray disc. All the extras have been on previous releases but are included on both discs in this case.
    Aspect ratio: 1.85:1 Dolby Atmos sound.
    4K disc is eminently superior to the Blu-ray on this occasion.

    One of the biggest failures of modern films is the total lack of memorable music scores. Great was the day when I could walk out of the cinema whistling and humming a film's main theme.

      @@moviecollector5920 @Ian Smith The Denzel Washington film Déjà Vu has an amazing soundtrack by Harry Gregson-Williams. It doesn't however seem to have a main theme. The composers seem to just write something that fits the scene. Hans Zimmer seems to be the only one who still uses Themes. The Dark Knight films, Pirates Of The Caribbean, though it was a different composers he collaborated with on Curse of the Black Pearl there is still a strong theme there. But by today's films, these are now old. They had strong male leads like Johnny Dep and Christian Bale. There are so many huge well known actors now that I don't think you'll get the strong leads anymore. Also they will write roles more balanced with the female roles or make leads, which is fine by me. They would alienate half their potential viewers if the females took back seats again. Besides I think it has improved a lot of movies with the women taking on much stronger roles.
      Villains! Heath Ledger's Joker must be the last memorable one but even that character was just 1 movies. We'll never know if he'd have reprised the role. But all the Marvel and DC films have multiple bad guys, so there is no space for a single ultimate villain.

    IMO Back to the Future really is a 360° masterpiece... well made in every aspect and still quite enjoyable, 36 years later. I was lucky enough to see it in the theater in 1985. It combines many genres... sci fi, comedy, nostalgia (which is at a whole new level now). It's simply among the best movies of all time. I can't think of a single flaw.

    Very good review. This is my wife's favorite movie. I fixed up our basement as a home theater with a 77" Sony a80j OLED (sitting 9.5' away) and a excellent 5.2.2 surround system with a Marantz SR8015 at its core. Even added a movie theater style popcorn machine. And Back to the Future is one of our 4 24"x36" movie posters. I purchased the Back to the Future Trilogy for her on 4k and we have watched the first film so far. I thought it was a huge improvement over the bluray as well. The scenes in Doc's 1955 house are particularly stunning with a multitude of details we had never noticed.

      It's a very good film to video transfer and blows the Blu-ray out of the water. That's rarely the case but it is with this one.
      Now for the future, don't rule out a budget 4K video projector to enhance your cinema evenings. It really is so exciting to get away from the restrictions of a box and fill a screen as big as your home cinema will allow. My own little viewing room projects onto a painted wall so don't be fooled by the need to spend big money on a white screen because anything will do. We tend to do three evenings a week in our cinema now and it's really helped during this past 18 months. John.

      @@moviecollector5920 I seriously considered a projector but after demoing several I just found the quality and detail of the image much better on an OLED TV (not on an LDC or QLED). To get a projector acceptable in quality it costs 3-4 times the cost of my 77" OLED. However you may have saved me about $4-5k with the idea of paint. If there is paint that could be about as good as a high quality screen then I may consider a projector. I have a wall that is easily big enough for 120" or more. But running the power and cabling through the wall and ceiling anchoring a projector will also add to the cost.

      @@snowpuppy77 Dulux brilliant white matt emulsion is very good but so is every other brand I've ever used. Don't be fooled by all this rubbish about the type and bead of screen you need because video projectors today are so bright that it is a complete irrelevance. Televisions tend to produce unrealistic imagery but it is possible to correct them with plenty of trial and error. I suppose the same is true for video projection but I find it easy to set them up to replicate the look of film closely. And you're not restricted by the box then either which means you can mask the image off and enlarge it further for Panavision ratio films if you fancy doing that and have the room. John.

    My family went to a friends house when the kids were like 8 or 9 years old and I brought "B to the F" on VHS with me. After watching the movie and leaving my friends house, both of my kids said "That was an AWESOME movie"...first time they had seen it.
    "Time after Time" is an awesome movie, saw it in the theater, loved it. Seen it many times since then.

      Greetings Gerald. I've been buried in the latest issue of Cinema Retro since it arrived a couple of days ago. I really like the Ice Station Zebra ten page retrospective. Dave Worrall has kept all his cinema tickets from longer ago than I which is quite amazing really. I knew that article was coming so I purchased the Blu-ray in anticipation and I may do a review of it now given it was one of the MGM Cinerama tie-ins. An excuse to include Grand Prix, How The West Was Won and 2001 a little perhaps. Also a chance to give the magazine another plug as all these things need all the help they can get these days.
      Thomas G. Smith's ILM 'Bible' is fabulous. I've had it from when it was first published and refer to it often. The follow up book is a bit of a bore as it is almost entirely about computer imagery and that just doesn't hold the appeal of building the models, painting the mattes and controlling cameras with computers to get gawd knows how many exposures on the same frames of film to make up a completed special effect. It really was magic how it was all done back then. Now it's of no interest at all unless the old methods are used and that seems to be rare.

    Time After Time is a shadow classic. I've shown it to so many people who've never heard of it, and to a person, they all fell in love with it. It's very 70's, but I think McDowell, Steenburgen (there's another Back to the Future connection) and Warner are all absolutely perfect.
    I can say that the 4K releases of BTTF II and III aren't quite up to the original (I think Universal puts more effort into the original classics over any sequels), and some of the effects shots are dodgy. That said, the trilogy set is a solid 4K buy, IMHO

      @@Raidallinen76 Greetings from England and good to have you here.
      4K rarely shows an upgrade in terms of resolution so that's not unusual and that's because our home screens are tiny, particularly television screens. A 58 inch TV is not really 58 inches because that's a diagonal measurement used to make prospective purchasers think they're getting something bigger than they are. The TV industry has always been like that but it's time they got away from it. When it comes to a 4K disc actually looking better though this is due to HDR and that's where you need to look for what is amiss with your system. Jaws is one of the best 4K discs and if you are not experiencing the superior colour and density when looking at the 4K then perhaps see if you can find where to turn your HDR setting up and down. If your Panasonic remote has the 4K button to the top right of the cursor buttons the same as mine then it's easy to play with but if not it means going through the player's system menu to find it. It's also possible your player is not outputting HDR or your television is not receiving it so does the 'HDR' box appear in the top right of the screen when a 4K disc first comes on?
      I had issues with both my systems when I first got them almost four years ago so you're not alone. It took ages to get the projection system right but I got there in the end. It's far more complicated than any video system that went before it.
      John.

Yesterday I found in color space settings that during 4K HDR material it gives possibility to change color gamut. I have color space auto. But you can change gamut between DCI-P3 and BT.2020. @@Raidallinen76 It's a long time since I did some serious configuring of my video projector to get the best out of 4K but initially I was having trouble with some discs showing banding and it may well have been one of those BT or DCI settings that caused it. One was compatible between player and television but the other wasn't. I don't know if finally finding that issue and correcting it resulted in better overall image quality but I suspect it did. Whatever the issue is with yours the Jaws 4K and Blu-ray should be ideal to use as the test discs because although the Blu-ray is fabulous, it doesn't have the rich colour of the 4K disc. That gold/bronze car going onto the ferry early on (start of chapter 4 if I remember correctly) should show a perceptible difference. It may not be as obvious on your system so maybe turn the colour up a little to enhance it overall which will hopefully help the 4K colour to stand out more over the Blu-ray. Then keep going backwards and forwards to see if you start to see the difference.

    Another great review! Well I was lucky enough to visit Universal Studios back in 2003 and enjoy the BTTF ride. Agreed: the first movie is completely self contained and by far the best of the trilogy. I consider it one of the very few "perfect" movies - as long as you don't overanalyze it. It's obvious that all that time travel nonsense and your typical nostalgic Hollywood portrayal of the American 1950s are just fun devices. In reality the movie is about the hero's journey (Marty) and his old friend. Both are rather clumsy fellas, and Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd manage to make us genuinely care, as well as turning it into comedy gold. All other cast members are top notch.

Alien is another good example and so similar to the 35mm re-release print known as 'The Director's Cut' that i'd be hard pushed to tell which was which if it wasn't for the obvious noise from the 35mm projector. But to really do a comparison would require top-notch cinema quality projectors onto a huge screen and not the budget 4K video projector or portable 35mm projector that I use here for my tiny home screen. John.

    I have the trilogy set on 4K and they all look great.
    It’s a shame like Indians Jones that they don’t have the original stereo audio present but the new mixes are stellar and the picture quality is fantastic.
    Having them all on their original laserdisc releases seeing them in 4K is a delight.
    The biggest change to the Audio is the bottle billy Zane throws at Michael j fox. In the original film it was a loud crashing bottle sound that moved from right to left which it is now replaced with a static completely new sound.
    Shame they haven’t released the cut of the film they shot with the original actor. Would love to have seen that

      There are extracts from the original shoot with Erik Stoltz within the extras but you can see why they had to let him go. I'm sure the film would have been fine but the difference between him in the role and Michael J. Fox is night and day. It would not have been the massive success it was without him. As for the sound, so many people complain if the latest sound system isn't on these discs that it's not worth all the time, effort and money to put the original tracks on a lot of the time. I tend to go for the latest soundtrack even on films I love so I'm almost as bad. I know some will say that there's no work required, just drop the sound on there but there is so much more to it and the more you put on a disc, the more chance there is that things will go wrong and a disaster could ensue. I know because I've done it myself! ohn.

I loved seeing the 20 mins of close encounters, it was amazing seeing the film go from one reel to the other, the picture was quite good, around a blu ray quality which is amazing. Funny how a picture from super 8 film looks better than a dvd, haha. I now think the 4K of close encounters is truly amazing and is one of the best out there. Even just the first film in this steelbook was rather expensive but I didn't fancy seeing the sequels again yet. Close Encounters is a better option right now and it is a fabulous release with all three versions of the film and a plethora of extras that can keep the most ardent movie enthusiast occupied. There will be a lot to talk about with Close Encounters, particularly because you have the Super 8 piece of history. There was also a CineaVision release of the promotional trailer which you will see as an extra. But those CineaVision prints suffered fade quickly and even though they were considered the pinnacle of home cinema at the time, today they're regarded as a bit of a let down owing to the poor print stock used. I still have that CineaVision release so will have to dig it out when I finally get around to doing something on Close Encounters. Maybe at the same time as you. John

Try to include cutaways to the box and the Super 8 film running through and all that sort of thing but while your original dialogue when sat in front of camera is playing... if that makes sense. The cutaways can hide edits and corrections which is basically what I do. Davinci Resolve is a powerful tool once you get to grips with it so a few on-line tutorials every now and then always help. Right now I'm finishing the editing of a classic car production in Resolve that will be finished in an older video editor for preparation for disc authoring. Basically it's mastered in Davinci Resolve and then finished in another editor because Resolve never got into MPEG and M2TS for DVD and Blu-ray authoring. When it comes to colour and density grading there is nothing better than Resolve and that's why all the major studios use it for restorations. Keep an eye out in some of the extras documentaries about film restorations (Jaws for example) and uou'll spot older versions of Resolve being used.

I got round to watching a solid favourite of mine on BluRay at the weekend, North Sea Hijack (1980) with Roger Moore and Anthony Perkins. i didn't know Ben-Hur had been released so I'll need to check that. I will certainly purchase a copy of that if/when it's out and given that it was a 65mm shoot for 70mm release I think we all know how good that will be dependent on the best surviving master. Likewise I know nothing about Spielberg's West Side Story but he always brings something extra special to a production so as much as I don't like musicals (usually) this may be one I'll actually enjoy. And that's similar to My Fair Lady really because it was just that little bit different that they got away with the cast members suddenly breaking into song. Another thing is, I watched a fan made extended version of Prometheus, based on an unreleased extended cut indented for iMax (it did not happen sadly). Afternoon John. Back To The Future is a favourite but I don't rate the sequels at all. It's the only film I saw more than once on the big screen. Wasn't the laserdisc 1.66:1? I know my DVD is 1.85:1 have you any idea why the aspect ratios get tampered with occasionally these days. I think I've had a laserdisc of Top Gun in 2.1:1 and the same with previous versions of Apocalypse Now. Time After Time is a good un. In the opening scenes there's a brief shot of a pair of white gloves covered in blood, for some reason they scared me to death when I was a nipper. I picked up the Blu-ray a while ago, good to see it again after all those years.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад

      Time After Time is.... timeless even though it's clearly dated a little. But that's part of its appeal. By the way, I read 'nipper' as 'ripper' which gave me a good chuckle.
      All these aspect ratios are approximations but there are a few things to bear in mind. The first is that the cinema 'widescreen' standard (i.e. not 'Scope) here and much of the European continent was 1.66:1 whereas in the USA it was 1.85:1. Often the films are shot 1.33:1 and mats used to mask off the gates in the projectors. The introduction of the so-called 'widescreen' format on LaserDisc and then VHS had to compromise as every television was 1.33:1 and so a little cropping at the sides would give a bigger picture and still not risk losing anything vital. All films can be cropped to a certain extent and most people would never notice even if the tops of heads were cut off or worse.
      I hope that answers everything Steve.

As I got older, and as a teen I really fell in love with the original. I can understand to a certain degree why people would hold the original in higher regard, the 50s time period, the music and the love story. It really didn't need a sequel and in hindsight it really is an 80s movie and of its time. Plus I think there is more of a realistic grittier edge to the original (as realistic you can get in a movie about tie travel lol) where as the sequels became a bit more cartoonish, even though the first sequel is a lot darker than the original imo. If you're in the UK then HMV have it. They didn't have it in our local store so I ordered it through their on-line shop and it was here two days later. I think they've woken up to the threat from Amazon which has succeeded in all but killing our high streets. John.

    If I buy this, I'll have 3 copies. DVD, Blu-Ray, and now 4K. How many times can studios sucker us into buying the same films over and over?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад

      The one that I've purchased the most is Jaws so I know exactly what you mean Josh. I have Jaws on Super 8 (two different versions), LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. The 4K is special though so I'm pleased to have it and it is the same case with Back To The Future I'm afraid because it is so superior to the Blu-ray... and that's unusual. John.

    Does anyone here know whether Back to the Future was originally filmed in *35 mm* film or *70 mm* ?
    If the master was shot on 70 mm, then it would still look *excellent* on *8K* !
    But if it was recorded on 35 mm, then it would require some *upconversion* to 8K, meaning that some details would be "lost."

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад +1

      35mm. To get everything from 35mm onto video via a scanner the evidence currently suggests about 5.6K. 70mm would be around 15K and IMAX around 45K. John.

      Yes, I first saw the film on VHS but it was crap. I don't know how we ever put up with VHS really but thankfully LaserDisc soon became more readily available and in PAL format was so much better that that was the end of tape for me. Super 8 was still king of home cinema through it all. John.

      @@moviecollector5920 Never did the Super 8 route, but like you, I went laserdisc as soon as I could. I converted when widescreen (letterbox) editions came out. My first two were Criterion's 'Blade Runner' and Fox's 'Aliens' Special Edition.

But I do have the 16x9 button in my player ready to unsqueeze any discs issued in the format. Shame. I purchased quite a few VHS tapes but very few of them were of an acceptable quality. Hard to believe people put up with it really but CRT was so much better than modern television sets for disguising any foibles or inadequacies so that was a big help. John.
