Crash Bandicoot 4 Time is 2 things to me. On a casual playthrough, it’s the greatest thing ever with challenge and charm all mixed together. When it comes to 100% however, it is unironically the Dark Souls of collectathons.

The box gems in particular has just been so tricky. I like to think I became an expert after replaying the Trilogy but with this game I still end up missing either a shit Ton of boxes or just that 1 or 2 boxes somewhere along a very long level.

I actually came up with a theory why Sonic games eat shit in 3D while other franchises made the jump with relative success; it’s because of the pacing. With say, Mario, you are expected to have to wait for things. Wait for platform to move, wait for the enemy to get into jumping range, wait for the hazard to disappear. This is easy to change over to 3D, as you just have a little more waiting to see all directions. But Sonic games expect you to always be moving, and the hazards and enemies are intended to be dogged or avoided. In 3D, you have to watch all directions so that you don’t get blindsided, and that means stopping to look around, which absolutely kills the pacing and fun of the games. It doesn’t help that the style of Sonic games is to get your little blue ass from one side of the level to the other as fast as possible, which kind of falls apart if you throw in a switch hunt in an office building. I think that’s why these games can never get above average no matter how much effort is put into their quality.
Honestly, it's more that Sonic Team just seems to be really bad at reading player opinions of games & game mechanics. They never figured out what players liked about _Sonic 2_ and _Sonic 3_ , or about the _Adventure_ games, which leads to an interesting phenomenon where _Sonic_ games tend to be just fine if they're made by a third-party company but suffer if they're first-party, which is pretty much the exact opposite of almost every other series. The last two big ones are a prime example of it: They made the 3D game themselves, and _Sonic Forces_ you to buy that shlock; they dumped the 2D game on series fans and basically said, "You guys know what you liked about the series, make more of it," and you'd almost have to be a _Mania_ c not to buy it. Sad thing is, I half think _06_ might've been the closest they would've come to capturing the magic themselves, if not for its infamously atrocious development cycle and barely-functional, Christmas-rushed release.
Despite Yahtzee's legitimate gripes, I'm still keen to play Crash 4 because I absolutely adore the visual style and the animation, and the gameplay I have seen seems really fun! And as someone who loves anime, anime does indeed ruin everything!!
@@tejasgarhewal7509 It absolutely did. Fates went full force on the tropes and ended up as one of the worst. Three Houses just wants to be Persona. But the series has always had some degree of anime-styled art, so it's hard to draw the line
@@Xatzimi I was talking in terms of sales though. 3 houses has sold 2.87 million copies as of March 2020. That's almost the best ever figure the series has ever reached. I don't dispute that the overall novelty of the games has gone down, but financially, it seems to be doing better than ever
I never knew about the Cadbury Caramel Rabbit until I saw one of the Nostalgia Critic's commercials episodes... holy hell those ads were fuckin' weird! but yeah... Lola Bunny... and they knew exactly what they were doing with that character, too. Lola: "Don't ever call me... 'Doll'" (blows her ears out of her face like it's long hair) Bugs: "CHECKED!" (leaps into the air with a springing noise... y'know, sprung, like getting an erection; falls to the ground, making a clunking noise like wood hitting the floor... y'know, wood... like an erection). no way in hell that was all coincidence
I gave up around the halfway point, or thereabouts. What with the game constantly trying to make me feel bad for wholesale slaughtering bad guys, bad guys that left me no options but to commit said slaughter. Around the winter episode in *her* scenario is where I said 'bollocks to this' and sent it back to Gamefly.
@@arlopullman6836 I played the first game all the way through, and I didn't see a way to do a pacifist run, so I'm not sure where you see another way to play. At only the very end did I feel like Joel was doing anything one might call evil. Just about every single person Joel kills is trying to kill him, and never for a worthy reason. Bandits want his supplies, the bastards at the end want to use him for food, the infected are basically zombies. Only the Fireflies aren't total monsters, and even then they're not exactly shining paragons of virtue, and what they wanted to do with Ellie wouldn't have produced a cure, because it's not the fungus in her brain that's useful, it's Ellie's DNA creating a mutation that makes her immune. They were killing her for something that wouldn't have done them any good. In 2, your enemies are neutrally trying to survive at their best, selfishly taking from others at most other times, and Abby murdered Joel. I get why, but I don't sympathize with her because she wasn't a likeable person, and her motive boiled down to "he did what my dad would have done for me, but because he wasn't my dad he's evil for it and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever for doing it, and he deserves to be tortured to death". The theme of the game was "revenge only creates a cycle of hate, which begets more revenge", but you don't make choices that allow any other results, and there's only one path you can follow. Joel was wrong for murdering the Fireflies, but ultimately his reasoning was that Ellie was becoming as a surrogate daughter, and he couldn't let some military style group take another daughter away from him, which one can sympathize with. Abby killed Joel because she wanted revenge, not justice. Which makes her a villainous character. But what bothered me, and many others, wasn't just the plot. It was that the whole game was a series of "you killed this person that didn't deserve to be a target of revenge" barring maybe a few of Abby's associates, and both sides losing people important to them. Ellie becomes a worse person for it, gives up on having a stable life with the woman she loves and her (murdered) best friend's child, and loses two fingers, robbing her of her ability to play the guitar (one of her last gifts from Joel that brought her a little bit of happiness). Abby loses her friends and ruins several people's lives, and only gets away because Ellie couldn't bring herself to finish her off, making all of Ellie's sacrifices pointless. What's to like about a game that makes me feel miserable about playing it?
Yeah. i disagree with some of his reviews (like the sekiro one), but he does call out things he doesn't like and you can sort of get where he's coming from most of the time. Plus the writing is funny

@@facetron9658 Edgy in aesthetic only. Crash's personality is mostly him being dumb and goofy. Thankfully, he doesn't say cringey phrases like Sonic does.
There is one point I have to disagree Yahtzee on: quality of life improvements: The addition of the shadow marker makes the 3D platforming much more bearable [though not easier, the difficulty I imagine is par for the course], and the option to choose whether to play using the extra life system or not, there are a couple of weird bugs here and there, but overall...I had fun...still having fun [completing 100% IS an absolute bitch though,]
Yeah, honestly, retro mode alone is such a good improvement, not to mention all the little stuff they sprinkle in here and there like the gem bar, the shadows etc. The thing is just that the game is hard because it's *supposed* to be hard. I think this game made a lot of great strides in the right direction.

Jesus man how new are you to this series to take offense to things like this, Yahtz hates so many things I find to hard to even pinpoint what to be triggered about and just forget about it.
Well, it has been long since I dissagreed with Yahtzee this much. I am still not sure how he can have that much problem with depth perception. And what does he mean by modern conviniences? You can remove lives, have a shadow where you want to land and it has option for color blind people. And Crash/Coco now have longer jump arcs, are more responsive in the air and have double jump to correct your positioning. And what is that comment about platforms having shadows? What does he mean by it? Overall, I feel like Tawna has a nice ass.
I think he main point was that he would have liked a free camera so he can make sure he judges the difference correctly. The shadow only helps after you already made the jump in the first place which can already be too late. I think, what he means with shadows for boxes and enemies is that without a free camera you can more easily judge the distance since you have two points that you can take into account. But I haven't played the game. Never looked fun to me tbh, so that's only my assumption.
I'm so glad that Yahtzee not only knows what Wheel of Time is, but clearly shares my deep desire for the many many loose ends to be tied up. Or just like one book that answers some stuff. IDK.

I think they never made a true sequel to SC2 because they didn't have rights to the *name* SC2. And either way, they *did* make a spiritual successor to SC1 at least in Unholy War.

The first few 3d games played just fine, they just weren't as refined as they should have been; the questionable elements were not playing as Sonic.

@@tejasgarhewal7509 It absolutely did. Fates went full force on the tropes and ended up as one of the worst. Three Houses just wants to be Persona.

@@Xatzimi I was talking in terms of sales though. 3 houses has sold 2.87 million copies as of March 2020. That's almost the best ever figure the series has ever reached.

@@timwoodhouse688 Very good call. The whole game was depressing.
@@lordgenerias you realise Joel slaughtered people constantly right? I swear Last of Us 1 fanboys didn’t even play the game right.

"Still a better ending than Last of Us 2." That cracked me up so hard. XD
I still think the end of Yahtzee's promotions should having Yahtzee yelling away from the mic, "There, Nic, I did it! Happy now?!"
I'm so glad that Yahtzee not only knows what Wheel of Time is, but clearly shares my deep desire for the many many loose ends to be tied up. Or just like one book that answers some stuff. IDK.

They did add one 'modern life convenience' named...uh, Modern mode, oddly enough. No life count that leads to a game over, always restart at checkpoints, and the game generates more checkpoints if you keep dying in a section.
