      And that 100% everything isn't what its all about. I've never done it because I never understood the appeal and don't know enough about any game mechanics regardless of how much I love it to do that. *But it's all optional!* I was surprised when I nearly finished Persona 5 Royal, and I got 80% of trophies without trying. This will be the first game I do 100%, but right now I'm just enjoying this game, and I'll eventually do all that some time later.

    The reason 100% completion being hard is such a common complaint is that breaking every crate in a crash level was something the original games expected or at least encouraged you to do. If crates were off screen there would generally be some kind of hint towards that, and if you missed a few the stages were short enough that a repeat visit and some intentional deaths wouldn't feel like work. A lot of crates in Crash 4 are just obscured by the scenery with no clever hints, the only way you'll find them is by exploring every nook and cranny in an obstacle course style game that constantly pushes you forward.
    It's ultimately not a deal breaker because Crash 4 pushes its challenge just through crazy and tough level design more so than possibly any other game in the series, but I think it would have been better to just drop the crate gems at this point and stick to the wumpa collection tiers as an incentive to break as many crates as possible but still allow the player some leeway. Then those most obscure crates could just be something to pad out your wumpa tally, so that if you missed some in a more hectic section of the level you could potentially make up the difference needed through careful combing of more relaxed parts.

    • @baalfgames5318

      The original games (or at least 2, 3, and Wrath of Cortex) also locked their endings behind 100% completion. 4 at least gives you a conclusion to the story if you didn't go out of your way to do the harder challenges, instead you get a Crash 1-style joke "where are they now" montage and a teaser for Crash 5 for getting 106%.

    • @RobotScarlet
      @RobotScarlet 2 года назад +4

      In the earlier levels, there’s one crate I just can’t get because it’s so high up AND I only even know about it from a Caddicarus video where he pointed it out.
      I would’ve never guessed it was there, and I looked all over. Crash 4 can be as hard as it wants, I welcome it as a casual Crash player and I loved the game through and through, but some of the box placements are unfair.

    • @elin111
      @elin111 3 года назад +17

      Many of the more open ended collectathon platformers like Banjo and Spyro barely had any actual platforming because the level design was designed around exploration rather than obstacle course gauntlets and when they did try to have platforming it felt out of place and rather clunky.
      Mario 64's more platforming intensive moments namely the Bowser levels were very linear in design, because in the usual sandbox levels the acrobatic stunts you pull off were more for taking shortcuts than needing to do platforming.
      Linear level design allows the platforming to be more efficient because it allows the obstacles to flow better, it's all a matter of having good proper level design that makes the levels fun to traverse despite only having one route and Crash understood that well. The area where the old games did fumble was that the levels were literal hallways and it did feel very cramped, this was easier to notice in the remake. Crash 4 solves that by making levels more expansive, they're still completely linear but they don't feel like hallways at all.

    Nitro Rad, people's main problem with how insane the game is to 100% is that the base game itself is only around 4 hours or so for a $60 game. Naturally, people will want to complete the game to get their money's worth, and you'd expect that to be a fun and engaging process. However, the developers made completing the game a total chore, so your options are to either just accept 4 hours of gameplay for a full price game or go through dozens of hours of pain 100%ing it, neither of which are ideal situations.

    • @Jordan3DS

      @SpiteHook That's not true whatsoever... when I play Super Mario 3D World or Super Mario Odyssey, I can get a full, complete experience just beating both games one time and not even going for 100%. You shouldn't be expected to replay a game a thousand times as a means of padding out the running time, that's NES game logic that doesn't hold up at all today.
      By base game I mean doing a normal playthrough without completing it, as opposed to a 100% playthrough where you get all of the collectibles.
      Personally, I value my time and would rather move on to a brand new game after beating a previous one rather than just doing the same stuff I've already done over and over and over and over and over again.

Then, after refunding Cybershit2077 which promised over 300 hrs of satisfying gameplay which it did not, I beat this game in under 7hrs but still play it on my spare time. How is that the main problem of the "people"? My only issue with CB4 is the box placements. At least I had fun with this than Mario Boringsy. I mean seriously, even Sunshine is better than Odyssey, people are just horny for Pauline's return in that game. ✌️

      @@capercrusader7129 That... was mostly gibberish. My point is, people don't have fun 100%ing the game, so the replay value isn't very high, and it's too short to warrant a premium price tag. The game itself seems good, but it'a not worth more than, say, $20 or so. Regarding Cyberpunk, it looked like a trashy casual game from the outset, so I don't know what people were expecting...
      What's wrong with Mario Odyssey? You're in the minority of disliking it, I and everyone I know that beat it had an amazing time with the game. I love Mario 64 and Sunshine, but I'd say Odyssey beats them on a purely objective level (even if subjectively I like 64 a bit more).

      @@Jordan3DS lacked focus, thank god for the old school 2D sections, those were the only consistent thing about the game. The other mechanics, just distraction from what it was trying to be, a 3D platforming game. @@capercrusader7129 I'm surprised to hear that, personally I absolutely loved the 3D gameplay and world exploration. Mario has never controlled better, the worlds are all varied and filled with detail, and it never stopped being fun for me. My cousin and I both bought the game the day of release and played it alongside each for 18 hours straight, we had that great of a time with it. The 2D sections are good, but I wouldn't say they're the best part of the game, or anything. I think the thing is, it's not really a "3D platforming game", is it? It's more of a 3D collectathon with some 3D platforming sections in it. Mario Galaxy and 3D World are 3D platformers, Odyssey is a very different genre that harkens back to 64 and Sunshine.

    The whole segment about 100%-ing a game really changed my views on video games. I'm the person who always wanted to 100% a game no matter how infuriating or tedious it was. This would cause me to either hate a good game because getting 100% wasn't fun for me, or I would not 100% a game that I just couldn't bring myself to complete and end up feeling like a failure. Looking at a lot of games now with the perspective of doing things at one's preferred challenge level and pace really showed me what video games are about. They're meant to provide an enjoyable experience for a wide variety of people. One game might not be so hard to 100% while another one is extremely difficult to 100%. You don't have to fully complete both. You're responsible for your own experience, and that's a philosophy that more gamers (like myself) need to understand. love how both of you tackled/mentioned the lives system in games, the character development of cortex, 100% percenting the game, character design, how toys for bob has so much potential and what makes crash different from other platformes 🌸
    great vid~~

    Glad you enjoyed it! I love Crash, but I gotta say it's very refreshing to hear a huge platformer fan such as yourself say that something like Spyro appealed more to them than Crash.

    Watching this after Caddy's review feels weird. Nitro, once again having a positive outlook and is enjoying the game as a casual, and Caddy, who just fucking *dies* after trying to 106% the game. I love them both, but I like Nitro's perspective more. Take your time.
    (Also the parts where Nitro and Brady were acting like dorks was so wholesome oof)

      Even though he keeps saying that 106% is the "actual core of crash", I feel like Caddy focused on 106% way too much in his review.

      Caddy does state that if you play the game casually it’s a lot of fun and in his twitch streams of it he highlights this fact. But Caddy is a hardcore Crash fan so his expectations were much different and he was always going to be coming at it from the point of view of trying to complete it. I love seeing Nitros more casual view and his take on the game on the game as it’s refreshing to see a non fan enjoy it.

    Will you ever do a review of Hello Charlotte? It's a really good encounterless surreal RPG with a very mysterious world and cast of characters. The plot is also so damn good when it all unfolds in the end and you finally get to understand why the world, the characters and the protagonist are the way they are.

Your understanding of the quality of platformers let you describe everything I love about the movement in this game without you even having to go back to the old games, some true passion for games here. Loved the vid

      @@succubasu Wrath of Cortex is. There are more vehicle levels that straight up platforming ones and a lot of the on foot stages are kind of too wide without having the enemies or obstacles to cover that expanded width. There are also some levels dedicated to Coco, who just plays like a worse version of Crash without any special abilities or attributes. Unless being stripped down to a basic jump and a pathetically slow and short reaching kick attack counts as special. To top things off the character models and animations in cutscenes somehow look worse than anything in the PS1 games.

    Ive been watching your vids for years now and this has got to be one of your most solid videos, the editing, the writing, everything about it oozes with that Nitro Rad charm I love, you've really gotten better and better every review you've made.
    I especially love the new cartoony editing like with the arms coming from nowhere and pulling you into the manifestation of the angry internet or when you get absolutely decked by Brady and you fall onto the floor, I could definitely name more examples but the people have seen the video, they can see what you've made, keep doing what you're doing platformer man.

    you posted this at the right time dude
    I've been butting heads with my friend over this 100% completion debacle that both Somecallmejohnny and Caddicarus made such a fuss over when it came to getting everything
    I'm glad you explained it for me when I said "you don't HAVE to get everything, quit forcing the mentality to do it all in one go, go at it steady, if you wanna push it, you push it"

    • @ricardoquerubin3962
      @ricardoquerubin3962 3 года назад +2

      I think the thing that pushes the mentality that you have to get (mostly) everything in the game is that they locked secret/bonus endings behind them. I watched Caddy's video on Crash 4 and there were some things he said he wasn't gonna do (like the dev time trials) cause they don't do anything substantial.
